saiki k is a golden anime.

i finished season 1 just now and. i have feelings. copy pasted from discord as a ranting to @peapodsinspace but i have to recommend the anime now.

i feel like the genre is comedy anime but. there are a lot of dark undertones to it. this is a teenage boy and he has to suffer every single day for powers he doesnt want. it impacts his everyday life and all he wants is to be normal but he doesnt know what normal is despite it being right in his face.

he pushes these people away but they continue coming after him. like real friends. normal friends.

they think of him and like him no matter what he does or acts or anything and. he loves them right back. he does things for them and they try to do things despite the fact that it typically goes wrong or he knows what theyre doing. he doesnt even care that he doesnt get acknowledgement because he doesnt want it.

so like.. i have to mention his friends. kusuo gives them grief constantly. always dissing them, always using their thoughts against them (such as teruhashi and her dislike for kids and bowling). because he can hear them. saiki kusuo not only gets his ideas about them from how they act and what they say, but also by what they think and that is a huge teller because they dont think anyone is listening. this is a private space that kusuo cannot even escape from whether he wants it or not and he is forced to hear and see whatever they think. ive joked about how he is always in gossip but. he literally cannot get out of it because he is such a kind person, that he wants to help.

and he gets to see all sides of them whether they show it or think it. kaidos letter. kaido defending yumeharu. hairos determination. yumeharus dedication. teruhashi and her utility of her own abilities. nendo with his mom and job and how he threw away millions of yen to save a drowning kid. kusuo is always there to see any part of that, and he gets a more in depth experience while choosing friends. should i mention that all those examples are things that kusuo didnt use his powers to observe? they were all things that he used his normal senses to find out or watch or overhear. it is very important to both kusuo himself along with the audience that he didnt use his powers to watch them be themselves and nice in all those situations as a normal teenager.

and i find it important that over time, and these experiences cumulate, that he slowly figures out that these are good, genuine people. sure they can be weird or perverted or cunning, but at the end of the day, they care about him and it only comes out so blatantly when they plan a surprise party specifically for him.

because many of us (hopefully) have wondered. what is inside our friends minds? and saiki has the answer. and he can see that they mean well. he may not understand most people and their emotions, but he knows some basics. and perhaps that could be enough to get him to live normally.

not to mention kuniharu and his convo with kusuo... despite some of the grief i give the man for constantly demanding his son do things for him, he knows his kid well. that convo is totally the pinnacle of their entire relationship, kusuos feelings, his friends.

kusuo mentioned that he doesnt tell his parents about new powers in fear they will demand more things and become lazy but. they care about him and know him. they understand his aversion to friends and know when to help him out or to push him to be around them.

he aided in that surprise birthday party but he also encouraged kusuo to go to his party that his friends threw for him. and he overhears that conversation without his telekinesis. because they actually know him and they all agree upon it. its not as in he is looking into their minds. he hears them through the door.

so he cant come to the conclusion that it was just a private thought that nobody wanted to voice aloud. no, they all agreed upon it. and they all verbally agreed to be nicer. just as his dad had said they would

it was weird seeing saiki kusuo smiling like that because he isnt one to do that and his friends know him well enough to know that (despite the fact kusuo avoids them!!) and they can all agree. they were all very happy to see kusuo smiling but they knew it jsut wasnt right

every time that kuniharu sneaks off to meet with the real saiki k they want, he is always trying to get kusuo to join them as himself

he is always encouraging his son to go hang out with his friends and he is still ready to go along with what kusuo wants. he was probably ready to go back to them after that last convo if kusuo still declined. but his words definitely got to kusuo because there arent that many people in the world who can understand kusuo so well

i know ive made fun of this but everyone around him sees him all wrong in their minds. they see the damsel in distress eyes or the idiot circle eyes. they hear a high pitch and weak voice. but not his parents. kusuos dad actually knows who he is and accepts him and loves him and encourages him to live out his dream of being normal by telling kusuo about what being normal is really like. to have friends who love you and go out of their way to try and make your day. kuniharu has to 'lecture' kusuo in order to get him to understand that the reason he was staying away was not because the classmates were 'bullying' or 'being annoying' from the kindness and love of their own decisions. it was because kusuo was scared of hurting them or disappointing them or even for them to abandon him.

and of course, that is a very common teenage feeling!! the fear of disappointing your friends- of course its normal!! saiki kusuo is a normal kid with not so normal powers attached to him.

This is partly my severe Danstelle brainrot speaking, but isn't it kind of amazing how close the Trailblazer and Dan Heng are nowadays?

Like, I don't think anyone doubted that Dan Heng cared for the Express crew before the Luofu Trailblazing Mission, it's just that he kept distance on account of his fears and doubts regarding his identity. Now that everything is out in the open and the crew accepted him regardless, though, he's been so much more open in his relationship with the Trailblazer, as with the rest of the crew. I can list the moments and little things that gave me pause:

- Dan Heng is now so adamant in his position as an Astral Express Nameless now. It's his home and his family, he's not a lost drifter anymore and he makes sure everyone knows it;

- He's so unbelievably open about his life! He's not afraid to talk about even the worst things, like his nightmares or his time imprisoned or Dan Feng's memories in his head. More than that, he wants to share!

- He wanted the Trailblazer to accompany him as he cut ties with the Vidyadhara and secured a more stable position for Bailu as the High Elder... So important and he wanted them there! He trusts them to be by his side.

- Overall, the conversations between them feel more natural and meaningful even if it's just over text. They relate to each other's circumstances, wish each other well... There's also Dan Heng guessing the Trailblazer's food preferences and being proud (?) that he guessed right. Cute.

This all kinda irks me, though. Why can't I have what they have? I look at Dan Heng's messages and I think "It should have been me" every time, it's getting tiring.

Hi! Ace person (not demi, but under the same umbrella and also starved for representation) and Lucanis fan here!

OP summarized really well how annoying it feels to have the writer go "yeah this was totally intentional the whole time, the company just didn't advertise it the way they did all the other rep." The company made such a production about all the companions being romance-able by any PC configuration and then said it was because they were all pansexual, 'because representation' not because they were making the companions 'player-sexual', but then the company outright denied having ace rep. I could put that down to corporate PR teams not understanding that asexuality is a spectrum that demisexuality falls into. If I was inclined to give them the benefit of the doubt, I might even be persuaded that Mary Kirby was planning to be more blatant about it, but the scenes/dialogue were cut. But I'm not inclined to give the benefit of the doubt (especially given that some of those cut-scenes were apparently 'steamy'). It feels a lot like claiming credit after the fact for brownie points.

As an ace person, I'd like to expand a bit on what OP said about Lucanis being traumatized. To preface, I like that Lucanis is said to be demisexual. I'm so damn starved for ace rep. And I appreciate that the ace rep here is a man in his thirties who doesn't go through an arc 'figuring it out' or stressing about how he experiences romance/attraction. (So much of existing ace rep involves angst about it. I feel no angst about my orientation, only vague irritation that it takes a power point presentation to explain. Seeing people angst about it does not inspire an 'oh that's me' response, it makes me feel sad for them.) He just is the way he is, and lives his life. Dude has bigger problems than swapping bodily fluids with people. I also like that he's inexperienced and doesn't angst about that either.

But they made the ace (demi, if you prefer the distinction) character a deeply traumatized person whose hesitance to be intimate can be attributed to his trauma. The PC gets a whole personal quest for Lucanis dealing with his tendency to internalize his reactions to everything but especially the trauma. Then the final romantic cut-scene implies intimacy without commentary regarding hesitance of any kind. As if the early instinct to pull back was overcome with the trauma. I'm really damn sick of ace-coded characters being traumatized. My sexuality was not formed by trauma. There is a misconception that people aren't actually ace, they're just traumatized or repressed or haven't 'met the one' yet (which, btw, sounds a lot like demisexuality doesn't it?). If trauma formed sexuality, there would be a lot less people interested in men (yes, that's generalizing, but come on, look at the statistics). I am the way I am. Can I have one ace character that doesn't angst about it or wasn't traumatized in an extremely violating fashion?

Also, Lucanis doesn't discuss his lack of intimate experience with the PC. It's tucked away in companion banter with Emmerich. If the PC doesn't bring the two of them along enough, you could easily miss it. Again, Lucanis is a character that has a lot more going on than dating troubles, but if the PC romances him, it would just be reasonable character writing to have a scene about 'oh yeah, this dating thing, never really done that. never really done the physical intimacy bit either. but I would like to do that, with you.' The fact that there isn't a scene or discussion or dialogue like that makes me feel like the writers had more plausible deniability to say he isn't demi, than they deserve credit for adding demi rep.

I wasn't looking for him to say the words. I actually prefer it that they don't. I liked what they did with Krem and Maevaris: in my opinion, they balanced affirming how they identify with setting appropriate language and reactions they have to deal with. It breaks my immersion in the setting when characters start using modern terminology for things that sometimes even the average modern person isn't familiar with. But one, one singular line where Lucanis says that before the PC, he's never truly thought about someone 'this way' would have done a lot of heavy lifting.

You know who would have been revolutionary as ace/demi rep? Davrin. The nice, handsome, sociable, heroic, knight in shining armor, ready to martyr himself to save the world, trying to raise a griffon, no intimacy related trauma to be found. Romancing him has been described as straightforward but intimate. Which is great, he's a lovely character, I'm very fond of him. But if he was ace/demi? On the far side of the map from every stereotype people think of? I would have lost my mind. Again, I really like Lucanis as a character, but if I have to seek out fanfic to fill in the gaps, the writers didn't accomplish what they said they were aiming for.

I openly accept any corrections, especially from actual Lucanis fans or demisexuals. If you disagree with anything I say this point onwards, please tell me!

The way Lucanis went from "bisexual disaster " to "panromantic demisexual" after the game came out feels weird (Both are direct quotes about Lucanis from Mary Kirby). Before I get into this I'd like to clarify, neither is a problem, Lucanis being demisexual in a vacuum is not what I take issue with.

But it feels like another excuse. Being demisexual means something it's not just another word for inexperienced or hesitant. If Lucanis is demisexual why does he fall for Neve or Rook nearly just as fast as any other companion does and why does he never acknowledge that?

There are many hints that he's never dated before (not sure if it's ever outrught stated), and again, he is shown to be hesitant... but nothing uniquely in the direction of demisexuality.

This game clearly isn't afraid of using real terms (it has an entire codex going over different non-binary labels), so why is this where they draw the line? Why does Lucanis never acknowledge the fact that he requires a deep connection before he feels certain things?

I've seen people call Krem from DA:I bad trans representation because he's never called transgender, which I respectfully disagree with. Still, Krem is explicitly trans and then Lucanis's demisexual coding is just... pulling away before you can kiss? It doesn't help that the scene happens after something that would definitely explain why Lucanis would need to clear his head.

That's also paired with the fact we do get told constantly that he's traumatised and he mentions having little faith in people prior to his romance (at least with Neve). This isn't to say he can't be demisexual, not at all, but there's always an explanation for his behaviour that people would think of before demisexuality and there's no effort put in to otherwise lead us to it.

For a game that is on the nose about everything, I find it hard to give them the benefit of the doubt that this was the one thing they handled with subtlety.

Best case scenario, Mark Kirby was just trying to... I don't know, set up expectations to defy them? Worst case scenario, this is just another case of someone from Bioware lying to us about this damn game.

1. How is Percy stronger than Jason? Percy only started training at 12 years old and came to Camp for summer, so he's trained for only 4 summers

Meanwhile, Jason trained AT 2 YEARS OLD BY GIANT WOLVES THAT'LL KILL HIM IF HE SHOWS WEAKNESS AND AFTER THAT, AT 4 YEARS OLD HE JOINS CAMP JUPITER FOR THE NEXT 12ISH YEARS AS A CHILD SOLDIER!! And Ricky over here telling me that Percy is stronger than Jason!? Also, while Percy could summon a bigass wave at 12 but Jason had to ask shitty sky daddy for a lighting bolt? BULLSHIT!! He should be able to summon 20 lighting bolts or some shit like that!

Before ya'll say, 'Jason had memory loss, so he couldn't use his powers correctly.' But Percy could? I didn't like how Rick nerfed Jason just to make Percy more op (I love Percy but Jason is also a big 3 kid so he should also be op, there's a reason why they stopped having kids.)

Speaking of being nerfed....

2. I want to see the other big 3 kids being more op! I could maybe understand Hazel not having a lot of op moments since she recently came back from the dead, but she was trained by JASON, A PREATOR!! I just want more big 3 kids being op besides Percy (Nico has the second most op powers and scenes)

For example: I want to see Hazel Levesque crystalline someone like in MLP or Jason sucking the air out of someone's lungs like in LOK. I want them to go CRAZY!!

3. Why aren't there Primordial demi-gods?? I feel like that would be a cool concept to think about. Would they be just as powerful as the Big 3 kids or stronger since their parents *are* their domain compared to the other gods who are only concepts of their domain? I like to think that the demi-gods could be more powerful than the big three kids, but if there's a canon reason why they don't exist, let me know in the reblogs.

And finally...

4. I don't like Nyx's portrayal in TSAS's book. I prefer the other versions of her, like the Hades game (mostly from her design). There are other gods and goddesses that weren't portrayed well in the series, but at least there's sort of a reason for it (for others that don't know or forgot, whenever the gods moved into different countries, the gods act like how the people views them there.)

I think people gotta realize and remember most trans guys can't access hrt/surgery or don't desire it and they are very much real boys as others who do have access to those resources. the reason why I draw most of my boys as "non passing" cuz they look like me and others.

I saw someone bring that up as a sort of "criticism" a few days ago which is valid but also like, it's how I express and rep boys like me.

The Blossoming Love

This is a rant post coz the promotions for The Blossoming Love SUCKS SO BAD. Starting with that title which is so generic and basic with both most overused words in cdrama titles 'Blossom' and 'Love'. The direct translation for Chinese title is "Thousands of peach blossoms bloom forever" which in my opinion is still not very good but it's longer and most importantly DISTINCT.

And then the posters. I'm pretty sure I've seen this exact same type of posters for other dramas. Nothing about these posters are appealing to me. I even thought the first one was a poster from another drama of his coz look.

The latest released poster and the photo shoot they did are so much better. I think it has something to do with the colors but I'm not an expert so I can't say for sure.

If they just want to show the vibe of the earlier parts, a poster like this

or if they can't add in a kiss in the poster coz you never know with Chinese censors something like this would work too instead of those.

AND THEN THE TRAILER. I've seen people watch it and saying it's just another "Journey of the Flower" type drama (understandably) but it makes me wanna scream IT'S NOT DON'T COMPARE MY XXC TO THAT WIMP. But the trailer sucks so bad if I just saw this first I wouldn't be interested too. Like who made this atrocity, I just wanna have a talk.

Another problem is people watching just the first few episodes and judging the whole drama based on them. It's just sad. TBF, If I haven't already seen the posts from @dangermousie and @fake-married-my-dead-fiance (Thank you guys so much) I too would have thought it's another generic Xianxia with so call "Righteous" ML (who is actually just a hypocrite and a coward who judge other based on their identities instead of their actions or don't dare go against traditions/others and never even question "the righteous way" when he clearly knows it's anything but that.) And this type of MLs disgust me the most even more than someone like Li Cheng Yin. (OP gods who aren't allowed to feel are another type although they're not bad just frustrating which Shen Li made it work last year.) That's why the "Good Guy" MLs have always repelled me in Xianxia but this drama makes it work. This is the first time I find the Righteousness of the ML extremely attractive.

Tell me how to not fall for this.

This drama don't have big names with large fandoms backing them while airing at the same time as THREE other dramas with traffic stars in them. Youku don't do anything to promote it properly either.

I want to see more posts about this drama, people discussing it, posting about specific scenes or drama watching threads but it's really difficult to find since so few are watching this. I won't blame it if you truly don't enjoy it since everyone don't have the same taste but please at least give it a chance. You can even watch it by ffing. If you still aren't sure and don't mind the spoilers check out @dangermousie and @fake-married-my-dead-fiance posts about this.

P.S- This is the exact scene that convinced me that I'm 100% going to love this drama and it's in ep 1 btw.

Disclaimer: I'm not a good writer and this post is not very organized coz it was a sudden impulse. I just wanted to write out my frustrations after seeing a video about it.

tumblr left liberals are always so snarky and condescending and "let me learn you a thing" with regards to anti-communism but whenever any of them try to step out of the mutual circle and engage with actual communist arguments it's always so embarrassing. I'm not posting screenshots of anything but I've realized this specially with two posts, one where the anti-communists replies to a post about leftcoms with "I don't know if OP is referring to me or not" before typing out a rant, and another where the attempt at an argument is just. pointing out what the post says, and not even really understanding it. This last one was a reply to one post of mine where I collect quotes from Churchill and some fascists without any commentary and the anti-communist just says "looks like he just discovered british colonialism is bad".

I'll stop with the examples but if you ever decide to really look at what the most vocal anti-communists on this site actually argue against communists, it's an apropos of overused cliches and fundamental misunderstandings of the text. Related to this is another trend among a specific subset of the anti-communist sphere, which is that that focuses on the war in Ukraine, figureheaded by 3 or 4 big blogs. And once again, if you really read their counter-arguments, it's clear they're just scanning for keywords and can't, for example, tell the difference between a communist and an honest to god Russian chauvinist. Of course they'll say these two groups of people are the same, all paid by the Kremlin and/or "useful idiots", which is another phrase they repeat, but the differences in speech really aren't that deep.

It's a real shame we only get this kind of fandomite liberal, a type who can't even really articulate the kind of capitalism they favor, let alone begin to understand genuine anti-capitalism or god forbid anti-imperialism. It would be nice if the liberals had better blogs, beyond the 40 year old wannabe writer and the babys-first-election types. They don't even seem to understand the theoretical basis of electorialism!

I'm just ranting. I don't think there's a broader point here or important conclusions. We just get the functionally illiterate, and after seeing the trillionth attempt at a dunk with the "glorious revolution" line, I sincerely wish we didn't
