If it is okay to ask, what brushes would you use when it comes to drawing in the Professor Layton Artstyle?

Hi!! if you mean for sprites like these:

then i just use the basic lineart pen that can probably be found on any art program. for csp it's the G-pen and my settings look like this:

i set the pen pressure to a lower range just to have more consistency

if you mean for the box art style like this:

then i still use the G-pen for the lineart, but i use the basic default round brush which can again be found on any art program for the shading, for csp i used this:

more in depth tutorial for the box art style below, i guess?

obviously start with references, i was picturing diabolical box in my mind so i used that as my main inspo but i also had all the other box arts up, was definitely also thinking of last specters art

(note: weirdly the 3ds titles go from soft shading to hard shading? not sure why but i was going for the soft one personally)

anyway, after that i went into compositional thunbnail, sketch, then lineart, fairly basic, i would show you what these looked like but im running out of space for images. the main thing to make it look "layton style" is to have a good grasp of the characters and shapes and how they move which is not something i can teach you in one Tumblr post i have just spent a lot of time staring at layton arts

also for your compositional sketch be sure to include where youre gonna put the logo because i forgot to !!!!!!!!

for the base colours i just used the colours from their official arts, its much easier than trying to figure out how to keep their palletes later

my layers here looked like this (but turned on obviously) the first few are an overlay on battler & co. to make them more orange to fit the tone of the art, and a multiply layer for both descole and beato since theyre more in the background. theres also a black gradient around battler & co. to make the transition into beato less jarring

from there is the lighting, i just used a yellow overlay layer for the light and a greyish brown multiply layer for the shadows

Here are some miscellaneous sketches I drew and took a photo of the same time as the animatic concept arts. But took me a while to post because of writing the image descriptions. I hope you like them!

Image Descriptions:

Image 1: Is of Desmond Sycamore from the Professor Layton Series. It is a side profile styled shot from head to shoulders. He is looking to our left with a surprised expression. He has his red rectagular glasses on and is wearing his signature double breasted waist coat, tie and white button-up shirt.

Image 2: Is also of Desmond, but in a 3/4's angle facing to our right slightly downturned. It is also head to shoulders since it's easier to draw and is good for simple expression practices. He has a bit of a confused pout on his face. He's wearing his rectangular glasses but a dark button-up shirt.

Image 3: Is of Desmond as Howl. As a sort of fun Howl's moving castle au. It depicts him in the scene after he first returns in his semi-bird form. Its a 3/4's shot with his head up as he reclines in his chair. He has a slight discomforted expression and has feathers in his hair and from his face. He is turned to our right and has a small window in the background about the same size of his head to the right of his face.

Image 4: Is of Meier Link and Charlotte from Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust (the movie). It has Meier and Charlotte facing eachother. Head to shoulders (for Meier more of a head to lower bicep due to his height), side profile. Meier is facing her to our right while she faces him turned to the left. Both looking into eachothers eyes with a fond, soft expression.

Image 5: Is of D from Vampire Hunter D. He is drawn in a 3/4’s angle looking to our left. From a head to shoulders shot. He has a neutral if not discontented expression. In his big brimmed hat and armour.

Image 6: Is of Lü Shang from Dislyte. He is also in a 3/4’s shot turned to our left and is drawn from head to shoulders. He is smiling warmly and kindly and giving the viewer a wave with his right hand.

Image 7: Is of Anton Herzen from Professor Layton. It is based on his introduction in the game. He is drawn in a 3/4's angle, head to shoulders shot. With a light smirk looking to the viewer. He is turned to our left and has the moon looming behind him.

Image 8: Is of Anton and Sophie from Professor Layton. You can tell I was in a bit of a Pandora's/Diabolical box kick since its October. But in this shot it was based on the scene Anton and Sophie were dancing. They are looking into eachothers eyes with warm smiles in a side profile. And is from head to waist. Sophie is on our left and Anton is on the right. Her hand rests on his shoulder while Anton has his on her side.

Image 9: And final, Hayden from Fields of Mistria. He is drawn from head to lower hip and is based on his game sprite. He like the other sprite redraws are in a 3/4 and is facing to our right. He has his usual welcoming smile and is giving the viewer a slight wave with his left hand and the other is tucked a bit under his belt hook.

Bonus little facts:

I drew some characters from The Vampire Hunter D movie because I'm planning to rewatch it again for Halloween this year. The style is just really pretty and unique. And has become sort of a tradition in these past three years.

I got a while back Lü Shang in Dislyte since i casually play it and really was interested in his story and quest in the game. Just a really nice character. I only got him after saving enough of those crystals when you get repeats or 5 stars.

I might try to edit an edit of Pandora's/Diabolical Box for Halloween, after rewatching the cutscenes. I also might draw more sketches but I can't make any promises. Little extra fact this is one of the three Professor Layton games (Curious Village, Pandora's/Diabolic Box and Last Spectre/Spectre's call.)

Assumptions I Make About You Based on Your Favorite Layton Game

Curious Village: You’re really more here for the puzzles than the plot of these games. (This might be the only Layton game you’ve played?)

Diabolical Box: Phantom of the Opera is your favorite Broadway show. You believe that the Tea minigame was the best Layton minigame and you will fight anyone who says otherwise.

Unwound Future: Your favorite Layton characters are the villains. You might be into Doctor Who (or were into it at one point). Also, are you okay?

Last Spectre: Luke is your favorite character. You like Ghibli films.

Ok folks, I was getting frustrated at the fact that I'm running out of female/female presenting characters for certain Layton games so we're gonna do a quick poll

please please please don't cheat and look it up, I'm only keeping this poll up for a day and I'll post my findings then. I just want to know what everyone thinks the one that has the worst ratio is.

also keep in mind, I'm strictly using characters that are referred to by he/him versus she/her. Obviously there's lots of room for nuance and you're free to interpret each character's gender however you like! For the purposes of this poll, however, we're just gonna stick with dividing them by he/him versus she/her.

Also reblogs are heavily appreciated since this is gonna be a short lived poll.

So I realized that most Layton minigames are given with the reasoning of NPCs giving Luke something to play with. Then I thought about Mystery Journey's lackluster minigames. Like, seriously, they just exist because Layton games have them to unlock challenge puzzles (I mean, Passers Buy is pretty fun, but it's not exempt from this).

Then I thought of something. There are 3 main characters. The minigames already aren't relevant to the plot, so they should've given each member of the trio their own minigame.

Here is what me and Sleepy came up with

Katrielle- something like the tea minigame from Diabolical Box but desserts. You either get a delight or something not meant for human consumption. Completing a recipe gets you some trivia (maybe about the significance or the preparation) and Kat's thoughts on whatever was made (maybe Ernest and Sherl too, but definitely Kat). Maybe a dessert could remind her of people she knows like the Professor, Alfendi, Flora, or Lucy, or Ernest. One last idea that's a bit of a stretch but could be neat is getting the real-life recipes upon completion. It would mean the desserts would have to be simple enough for a kid to make with their parents, but still. Regardless, it'd be easy to have it be unlocked in the first case, considering how important sweets are in it.

Ernest- Flower arranging. There are blocks of a certain flower in different colors that you need to arrange a specific way. Like with Kat's desserts, completing them gets flower trivia and comments from Ernest. A level involves roses, and he comments about being reminded of when him and Kat met. He mentions a different type of flower being his mom's favorite. Maybe a level's flower could even be relevant to the case just completed through symbolism or something. Not entirely sure how it'd be unlocked. There could be a short bit added to case 2.

Sherl- This one was the most difficult to think of, but maybe something similar to the inn minigame in Curious Village. Except, instead of collecting furniture, you're getting stuff like dog toys and treats, and you get Sherl's thoughts on them. Would also be easy enough to implement early game, heck the first item unlocked could be his basket. Maybe a couple of items you get later on make him think of Kat and Ernest.

Your art inspired me to finally finish the last two chapters of Prof layton "the lost future" :^]

I played the first two games and couldn't put them down and then I dropped at the finish line for no real reason.

I followed for pikmin but was delighted to see your subtle expressiveness and beautiful colours applied to a series that is complimented by the style. ^^

I was worried about the rest of the series because of the bad reputation but I was planning on giving it a shot anyway.

Future Game Stream Help

Granted, this is after the King's Quest fangame stream and another quick stream.... but I could use the help! So to start, I have some good news/bad news in regards to games. Good news is I do have two games I will eventually stream, bad news the other games I'd LIKE to stream are.... "still in the works".

I mentioned last week how, ideally, I'd like to stream The World Ends With You (and eventually Neo TWEWY), but I've hit a minor snag with getting past some technical glitches and I'd want to keep twiddling with it before I can confidently say it's going to be streamed.

Earlier this year, I threw a potential Uncharted Megastream, but I found out there were a few blocked scenes on the Playstation and Steam doesn't have the original trilogy.

One day, eventually, I will stream TWEWY and the Uncharted series, but until I get that resolved, it's on the metaphorical backburner. But that being said! I stumbled on two other games I'd like to stream and I will eventually do as such, but I'm gonna let ya'll pick which one first.

Just to reiterate, both of these games will be streamed, it's a matter of which one first. I have another fangame I'll play before the winner but I want to know which game to prep.

For those who aren't as familiar... I'll leave the "argument" under the readmore~

Professor Layton (Original Trilogy)

In the style of the Nintendo DS, we play as the titular Professor Layton, a renowned British professor who has gained a pretty decent fame for his knack for puzzles that tends to get caught into situations where there is a brewing mystery and the only solution to get to the bottom of it are puzzles. The original trilogy, all done in 2D, are: Curious Village Diabolical Box Unwound Future It is semi-voice acted and is considered to be the "contender" to Phoenix Wright and puzzles ranges from brain teasers to math... I'll admit I'm terrible at math but fairly decent with puzzles overall. I have also played before all three games but I haven't played it since its original releases and I adore the original trilogy for its characters, style, and music.

Final Fantasy X

Remastered for newer system (in this case, PC), we play as Tidus, a beloved sport star from the city of Zanarkand that witness his home attacked by an Eldrich monster known as Sin and sent him 1000 years into the future where summoners go on pilgrimages to gain power and stop Sin (yes the same one). Trying to find a way back home, he joins a summoner named Yuna and her party in hopes to both stop Sin and go home.

It is a fully voice acted (sans the handful of NPCs) turn-based JPRG and that means it will take a while considering it's, well, a JRPG. I have played this game many-a times and it's one of my all time favorite RPGs that inspired a lot for me.
