I’ve always had a soft spot for this episode. There are elements of it that strain credulity, but the concept of Batman liberating a group of orphaned children works for me thematically and this is one I have particularly vivid childhood memories of.

This is the first time I feel like the dialogue and attempts at humor in this series really work. The banter between Alfred and Bruce where Alfred encourages him to take a vacation is very funny and completely in character.

ALFRED: I do believe a break from Wayne Enterprises and crime fighting would do wonders. Perhaps a vacation? Golf?

BRUCE: Sounds boring.

ALFRED: In the Bahamas?

BRUCE: Hot and boring.

There’s a little bit of self-deprecation in the way Bruce responds, but also complete truth in it. He needs to remain busy. Boredom is too dangerous a concept for his brooding nature. Alfred trying to deal with the kid from the sewers, is full of great visual gags. All of the stuff with the boy in the mansion is great and helps round out Batman and Alfred both. It reminds us that this guy is not merely an avenging demon of the night. He cares deeply about the people he is trying to protect.

Sewer King himself is more pathetic than threatening. (Bruce Timm admitted the original script involved more overt abuse than primarily his ranting, but I think his physical cruelty is pretty well implied and I can do without it more visualized). His screaming and raving paints him as a petty little man. I do like that, though. A guy who collects and enslaves orphaned children and manipulates them into thinking they are unloved and unwanted is as pathetic as he is evil. He can’t exert power over anyone with power and so he takes out his cruel fantasies on the helpless. Someone who takes advantage of orphaned and abandoned children is a natural enemy for a man like Batman who is dedicated to protecting the innocent (and repeatedly takes in wayward children of his own).

Research - Lars Muller

Lars Müller was born in Oslo in 1955 and has been based in Switzerland since 1963. After becoming a graphic designer in Zurich and extended travels, he started a one-year assistant position with designer Wim Crouwel in Amsterdam. Having founded his own studio, Integral Lars Müller, in Baden (Switzerland) in 1982, Müller established a long-lasting friendship with his mentor Josef Müller-Brockmann. In 1983, Müller published his first book and, as Lars Müller Publishers, has produced some 600 titles to date. 

Lars Müller is a passionate educator and has taught at various universities in Switzerland, Europe, the USA and Japan. In 2019, he taught as the Regents’ Professor at UCLA. Müller frequently serves on academic and competition juries. From 2009 to 2015 he was a member of the jury of Design Preis Schweiz and from 2013 to 2015 the international president of AGI Alliance Graphique Internationale.

At AGI open, they had a library with discounted books for those who attended. I purchased 2 of Lars' books called "WHY WE DESIGN" and "Swiss Design". These books have inspired me to learn more about Swiss design as it has been something I am interested in. The minimalistic style of Swiss design is something I have always been drawn to. The way that people are able to communicate in a very basic yet very visually appealing ad aesthetic way.

His books give deeper meanings behind Swiss design and design in general. They show images of successful posters while also explaining the purpose and process of the designs.

my friends, it is alexandria rosales’ last week on the blaseball hall of fame ballot and it is my solemn duty as a spies fan to bring you the evidence for why they should be inducted. alex is a spies icon, but they have done much more than be on our team since day 1. here are some of alex's hall of fame worthy accomplishments:

alex has the 7th highest pitching WhAT ever. this is higher than a bunch of players who have already deservedly made it in, like theodore cervantes and jolene willowtree.

alex has the 10th most pitching wins at 260.

alex has the 7th most quality pitching starts at 251.

alex has an overall ERA of 3.32 but their peaks were incredible, with a 2.0 in season 21 and a 1.98 in season 8, where they had the best ERA in the league. notice how those are two very different times in blaseball!

but alex is not just good at pitching. in season 24, teamwide scattering activated their undefined mod. in that season alex had a BA of 0.432, the second-best one-season BA in blaseball history following only dudley mueller's season 11. this is better than both jaxon buckley and conner haley's best seasons.

in season 24 alex also had the highest one-season OB/SLG ever at 1.439.

frankly these accomplishments make alex extremely qualified for the hall. however, i know what you people on blaseball tumblr also enjoy: lore. here are some bits of alex rosales lore:

sword lesbian. the sword is a cursed family heirloom. it killed some union busters once

they used to do roller derby! then almost everyone they did it with died or was shadowed. however they did it!

the spies do not have captains but alex might as well be one. a true houston icon.

has a long romantic history with a wide variety of beloved players. they had a rivalmance with jessica telephone. they had a fraught could-have-been with donia bailey. they nearly dated avila guzman. they could have dated siobhan chark but unfortunately they had given up at romance at that point

anyway they threw that cursed sword at the coin! sick!!

there are a lot of great players on the hall ballot this week and i encourage you to fill up your ten votes. gabriel griffith! lars taylor! mags banananana! but i also advise you....make one of your votes alexandria rosales
