👋 + Hayashi Lark for the ask game!

Thanks so much for asking about my girl, Hadley!! (And I’ll also tag the other One Piece babes @auxiliarydetective and @oneirataxia-girl. <3 <3)

Luffy — Luffy absolutely adores Lark, the same way he adores all the other Straw Hats. He thinks she’s super strong for being able to run away from the World Government when being their songbird was all she’d ever known, and on top of that he thinks she’s just a really funny and cool person with an amazing singing voice. (They definitely eventually develop something of a brother-sister bond over time, too, because they just love each other and would do anything for each other.)

Nami — Nami is a bit unsure about Lark when Luffy first offers to help her run away and join the Straw Hats, mainly because of her reputation as the World Government’s perfect little propaganda machine. She thinks that Lark might genuinely believe all the things she sings about, and for a little bit she’s not exactly sure that Lark joining the crew isn’t some kind of ploy for the World Government to infiltrate pirate society. But eventually she realizes just how used Lark has been her entire life and how much she honestly wanted to get away (something she herself can relate to, even if that isn’t revealed until later), and though they never exactly become best friends, Lark does become someone Nami respects and whose back she will always have in a fight.

Usopp — Usopp thinks Lark is super cool from the first moment he meets her. As a storyteller himself, he really admires her songwriting skills once she feels brave enough to show the other Straw Hats her notebooks, and might even try to convince her to make a song out of one of his crazy Captain Usopp stories. He also teaches her how to use a slingshot when she asks, which is a fun bonding experience for them, and overall the two of them become really cool, funny storytelling besties.

Zoro — Zoro does not really respect Lark at all at first, mainly because she has zero fighting skills and he doesn’t understand why Luffy would allow her to join the crew when she’d be useless in a fight. Eventually, though, he starts to realize how strong and determined she truly is, two qualities he can’t help but respect, and he becomes so fond of her witty jokes and the little songs she makes up when she’s just doing things around the ship, even though he’d never admit it. He makes a promise to himself to do his best to protect her, and he keeps it even after Sanji teaches her to fight (and even though he always gets so annoyed when she refuses to get rid of her pretty dresses and get some clothes more practical for fighting, and then she still manages to fight really well in those dresses).

Sanji — Now, when I tell you that Sanji thinks of Lark as the best person in the world, I am very much not kidding. He’s been head over heels for her since that first moment he sees her sing at Baratie, and he doesn’t really see that changing anytime soon, even after they get together. He would do anything for Lark, would give everything to keep her safe and happy, especially after everything she’s already been through, and he spends a lot of his time being grateful that she feels the same way about him. (She’s even the only Straw Hat he trusts to even stand beside him in the kitchen and hand him ingredients, which is the ultimate sign of just how much he loves her.)

Happy Birthday, Nico Robin!

It’s Feb 6th in my timezone, which means it’s Robin’s birthday! For the occasion, here’s a reposted one-shot I wrote a few years ago. Enjoy!

"Robin?"

"Mm?" Robin looked up from her book to find Nami staring at her. They were in their room, each resting on their own bed. 

"I was just thinking . . . I don't think you've ever told anyone when your birthday is."

She looked at Robin expectantly. Robin looked up in thought, and then shook her head.

"You're right. I don't think I have."

She returned to her book. Nami sighed. "Robin?"

"Yes?"

"When is your birthday?"

"You mean the date?"

"Yes, I mean the date."

"February 6th."

"Oh!" Nami tapped her chin. "That’s pretty soon, isn't it?"

"I suppose so," Robin murmured. "I hadn't really thought about it."

"Who doesn't think about their birthday?" Nami said, tilting her head.

"I stopped celebrating mine a long time ago," Robin replied. "I didn’t often have time for celebrations, no matter what the date was."

"Hmm,” Nami said, standing. “I see, I see. Sorry to bother you!” 

She left the room, leaving Robin to her book.

Robin had indeed stopped celebrating her birthday a while ago. Not only was it sometimes difficult to keep track of the date when on the run (she was often forced to search through garbage bins for newspapers), but she had no one to celebrate it with, and no one who would consider wishing her a happy birthday. She had merely kept track of the years without pomp and circumstance, mentally noting her age whenever another birthday passed.

Despite that she was now with Luffy and the others, she had no desire to start celebrating again. It seemed like too much trouble to go through, for one silly day of the year that was almost exactly like all the others.

But with the way Nami had interrogated her, Robin had an inkling of suspicion that she was planning to throw a party for her anyway. And based on her too-casual attitude, Robin also suspected that it would be a surprise party.

Although she hated to ruin their efforts, Robin would not be playing along with their game.

When February 6th came around, Robin was ready. She had noticed the others meeting in secret the day before, and she knew that they must have been preparing the surprise party.

She got out of bed, swift and silent as a lark, and left the bedroom. She went to the kitchen, but before entering, checked inside by sprouting an eye in a corner.

Everyone was sitting around the table except Sanji, who was behind the counter, and Zoro, who was sleeping on the couch. Robin allowed the eye to vanish and entered.

"Good morning, Robin-chan!" Sanji exclaimed upon her arrival. "Did you sleep well, my dear?"

"Good morning, Sanji," she said, smiling. "Yes, I slept fine. Good morning, everyone."

The others said similar greetings without any mention of birthdays. Robin thought that the party, if it was indeed happening, must be set for later.

Later that day, Robin noticed that everyone seemed to have disappeared from the deck. No Luffy, Usopp, or Chopper playing games; no Franky practicing dance moves; no Nami reclining on the bow.

Suspicious, she headed up to her and Nami's room, though not before checking inside. After confirming that only Nami was inside, resting on her bed, she entered. Nami looked up.

"Hey, Robin," she said tiredly. "You need something?"

"Oh . . . no," Robin said. "I noticed that no one was outside, and it seemed odd. I was wondering if you knew where they were."

"They must be around somewhere," Nami said indifferently. "I'm sure nothing terrible happened. Just search the ship or something . . . you want help?"

Robin shook her head. "That's okay; you look tired."

"Mm." Nami rolled over on the bed. Robin tiptoed out.

Upon searching the ship, she found that Franky and Usopp were working on a cannon below deck. Meanwhile, Luffy was pestering Sanji in the kitchen, Chopper was mixing something in his room, and Zoro and Brook were up in the crow's nest, meditating together.

She sighed and headed for the library.

The end of the day came soon and not a single member of the crew had wished her a happy birthday. It was silly, Robin thought as she entered her room, to have thought that anything would have happened in the first place; Silly to think that her crew would attempt to throw her a surprise party. She didn't know why she had expected something in the first place.

After all, birthdays were such a trivial thing, she told herself as she changed into her nightclothes and went to bed.

Robin rose the next morning, February 7th, and saw that Nami was already gone. Figuring that she must be in the kitchen, Robin got up, got dressed, and left the room. She went to the kitchen and opened the door--- 

---And was bombarded by a huge chorus of “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” from the whole crew standing around the table with big grins.

She stared in shock. The kitchen was decorated with paper streamers and balloons stolen from who-knows-where, and there was a large purple cake in the middle of the table with 'HAPPY BIRTHDAY' written in pink frosting. Luffy, Usopp, and Chopper had noisemakers in their mouths, which they blew repeatedly.

"Robin, hi!" Luffy said around his noisemaker. "Happy birthday!"

"Nami told us today was your birthday," Usopp explained, also talking around his noisemaker, "so we set this up!"

"Robin-chan, I don't know how you do it," Sanji sighed with a smile, "but you somehow look even more radiant today!"

"Robin-san?" Brook asked. "Are you quite alright?"

Robin was frozen, blinking owlishly and staring at them. "I . . . I . . ."

"Oh, don't be so shocked," Nami said, nudging her with a grin. "Don't tell me you didn't suspect!"

"Well . . ." Robin cleared her throat. "It’s just that . . . my birthday was yesterday."

The room went silent. 

"Today's February 6th, isn't it?" Chopper asked.

Robin shook her head. "I'm afraid today's the 7th."

"Are you serious!?" Franky yelled, clutching his head.

Usopp ran off somewhere and came back with a calendar. "Oh, no, she's right! Yesterday was the 6th!"

"Oh, come on!" Nami exclaimed. "That's so unfair!"

"Eight people planned a party and no one noticed?” Zoro muttered.

"I can't believe we messed up!" Chopper wailed.

"Robin-chan, can you ever forgive my poor bumbling self?" Sanji cried pitifully.

Robin felt a smile spreading across her face. "I don't mind celebrating today, everyone. We can always pretend today is the 6th."

"Oh, good!" Luffy said, blowing his noisemaker. "Party time!"

"Are you certain, Robin-san?" Brook inquired.

She nodded. "Absolutely. Besides, I’d love some cake. Shall we begin?"

And so the party commenced. As Sanji guarded the cake from Luffy, Robin smiled and thought that, just maybe, birthdays didn't have to be so trivial after all.

Lark meets Nami

((BACKSTORY: A huge fight had just taken place between Moria (guy who enslaved Lark) and the Straw Hat pirates. After they defeated him, everyone is in a big banquet hall in the castle eating, drinking, and celebrating. Everyone had minor scrapes and bruises but Zoro was still unconscious, having the most serious injuries by far. At this point, Lark has only spoken with a few of the Straw Hats but Luffy has already invited her to sail with them.))

Lark POV

I had never seen a party quite like this one. The Straw Hats were spread throughout the room, laughing and talking with the other residence that had just been freed from Moria’s reign. It was the happiest I had felt in awhile, yet everything had happened so fast. My life had completely changed in less than a day all thanks to Luffy and his crew.

I sat on the banquet hall floor, leaning casually against the wall, sitting next to Zoro. He was unconscious, laying on a makeshift bed on the floor, his bandages just cleaned and replaced with Chopper’s help. I had witnessed everything he went through, and I couldn’t seem to let myself leave his side.

��It’s Lark right?” I heard a friendly female voice ask. I looked up to see the red head standing over me. I nodded at her and I guess she took that as an invitation to sit next to me. “I’m Nami, the navigator.” I nodded in understanding. “How’s he doing?” She asked looking down at Zoro.

“Chopper says he’ll be okay, just needs to rest.” I explained. There was an awkward pause and I wasn’t sure what to say. I wasn’t a very social person and meeting strangers was never easy.

“How long have you been on the crew?” I asked finally.

She gave a short laugh, “It depends, do you include the time I tried to leave the crew?”

“You tried to leave?” I was a little shocked. The crew was so tight knit it seemed impossible to imagine them separately.

Nami nodded, “It’s a long story that I’m sure you don’t care for. But basically I was confused and thought I had to do something on my own. I’ve always been on my own, I wasn’t used to having friends to count on.”

I chuckled, “Same here…”

She sighed happily, “But then I met him.” she smiled fondly over at Luffy who was laughing with Usopp and Chopper.

“What’s so special about him?” I asked, looking over at their captain. He was short, goofy, not very intimidating, and just a weirdo overall. “Why choose to follow him?”

She giggled to herself, “You don’t know him yet, Lark. You see him on the outside but you still have no idea who he really is.” She placed a hand on my shoulder and instinctively I almost shrugged her off, but I didn’t. “Give it a week, or even just a day, you’ll see who he really is. He’s saved my life in more ways than one. He’s the greatest man I’ve ever met.” Her big brown eyes showed pure honesty and I could only nod in response.  

She gave me a reassuring smile and stood up. “Let me know if you need anything. I’ll be here for you. And so will everyone else.” She smiled again and walked away, heading back towards Robin.

I was left with my thoughts, watching her walk away. “The greatest man you’ve ever met, huh?” I said quietly to myself, “We’ll see about that.”

Note: Lark is such a closed off person, but she doesn’t not like meeting people, it’s just hard for her to fully open up. She immediately thinks people will use her or hurt her so she doesn’t put her guard down. So Nami being nice and just sitting down and talking with her Lark internally was like ????? excuse me?

supernatural creatures au w/ Lark?? -🍂

Oh ho ho, this idea is so fun!! Thanks, Alvita!! (And once again, we’re tagging the gang @auxiliarydetective and @supermarine-silvally!! <3)

Okay, so obviously Lark is a siren in this AU. And rather than just parading her around as a showpony, the World Government actually uses her as a weapon, forcing her to use her voice to brainwash Marine cadets into becoming unquestioningly loyal to the organization and even some captured pirates to completely turn against their ways and become Marines. She knows it’s an absolutely disgusting abuse of her magic and she hates it, but her handlers have made it abundantly clear that it’s either that or death, so she goes along with it.

But then one day when she’s in a small village on a World Government assignment, she meets a little psychic empath named Luffy who can clearly sense her conflict and how much she hates what she’s doing, and offers her a way out. She takes it, obviously, and runs away to join his pirate crew, which consists of Luffy, vampire Nami, werewolf Usopp, kitsune Zoro, and kitchen witch Sanji.

We’ll imagine in this universe that sirens can sing without enchanting people, it’s more a matter of intent when they start singing than anything else, but Lark still refuses to sing for a while after joining the Straw Hats because she just doesn’t trust herself to use her magic responsibly anymore. It isn’t until Sanji hears her absently humming to herself one night when she thinks she’s alone - because even if she doesn’t outright sing, music is in her very DNA, she can’t give it up entirely - and says that he bets she has the most beautiful voice he’s ever heard that she agrees to start singing for fun again. She still refuses to use her siren song for battle, though, a decision that the rest of the Straw Hats are of course okay with.

Sanji also absolutely makes the best magic-infused food in addition to how amazing the regular food he makes is, and it’s actually what leads to him and Lark getting together. He’s testing out a magical recipe he found that basically acts as an hour-long truth serum to anyone that eats it, and Lark winds up eating one of the prototypes without knowing what it is and blurting out that she’s in love with him. She refuses to speak for the rest of the hour after that, not wanting to reveal anything too embarrassing, but Sanji still admits that he loves her too.

Luffy, because of his empathetic powers, can sense that Lark and Sanji have started dating before anyone else because he can feel the love radiating off of them now. He then proceeds to do something completely out of character for him and actually manages to keep it a secret until they reveal their relationship to the rest of the crew themselves, just because he loves his friends and respects them that much.

"Green Finch and Linnet Bird" from the musical Sweeney Todd.

One of two songs that inspired Lark's character, and the one that inspired her name! This song talks a lot about the singer feeling trapped in their own situation and likening themself to a bird in a cage, which definitely describes Lark's feelings during her time being the songbird of the World Government. This would definitely be a song she would make up and sing to some caged birds she could see from whatever large home the Government had her staying in while she was travelling around and singing for the Marines.

"Into the Unknown" from the movie Frozen 2.

The other song that inspired Lark's character. For years before she ever meets the Straw Hats, Lark has been hearing the call of the open sea, urging her to run from the World Government and set out on an adventure on the high Blues, to learn all the pirate songs she could and even write a few of her own, and this is a perfect encapsulation of that.

"Always Sing" by RaeLynn.

Throwing a little country in here! Despite how much the World Government forced her to sing and dance and be there little songbird and restricted what she was allowed to sing, music will forever be a bit part of Lark's life, and this song is perfectly written to show her thoughts on music and singing and now necessary it is for her.

"Dandelions" by Ruth B.

This song is absolutely perfect for Lark and Sanji's relationship. They're both helplessly pining for each other for ages before they finally get together, both of them wishing desperately for the other to return their feelings and be with them, but not seriously thinking that it will happen. (And they get the biggest "I told you so"s from Nami and Zoro, respectively, when it does happen.)

"My Jolly Sailor Bold" by Acapella Onion.

There is an entire scene I have attached to this song of Lark singing it for a whole room of pirates to try and get the Straw Hats out of trouble, and it's basically the scene where Sanji full-on falls in love with her. I won't share the whole thing just yet, but it's definitely what comes to mind whenever I hear this song.
