In 2020, Dr. Ruan and his team unveiled their creation: a type of white paint that can act as a reflector, bouncing 95 percent of the sun’s rays away from the Earth’s surface, up through the atmosphere and into deep space. A few months later, they announced an even more potent formulation that increased sunlight reflection to 98 percent.

The paint’s properties are almost superheroic. It can make surfaces as much as eight degrees Fahrenheit cooler than ambient air temperatures at midday, and up to 19 degrees cooler at night, reducing temperatures inside buildings and decreasing air-conditioning needs by as much as 40 percent. It is cool to the touch, even under a blazing sun, Dr. Ruan said. Unlike air-conditioners, the paint doesn’t need any energy to work, and it doesn’t warm the outside air.

My cousin, a published writer, a well-known poet in my country and a literature professor, for whom I've always been no.1 support ever since her first attempts at writing in high school, told me that I must stop writing as a hobby because that's her thing and since I'm writing fantasy mostly my writing could never have any important artistic value anyways.

The group installation | layered structures

I’m incredibly satisfied with the outcome of this brief. Especially given that the majority of this installation was put up and made in 3 hours.

Starting from next week, we’ll begin to experiment with different drawing techniques with inspiration from our installation for a maximum of about 25 hours. This is why it was crucial that our piece be visually stimulating.

FRANCESCO CLEMENTE, ‘WINTER FLOWERS’

Initiated in 2010, Clemente’s Winter Flowers series emerged from a collaboration with the artist’s wife of nearly five decades, the actress and choreographer Alba Primiceri. One winter, Alba brought an assortment of flowers to Clemente’s New York studio. Plucked from the city’s parks and gardens, these blooms had survived the cold. Inspired by their enduring beauty, Clemente embarked on a series of floral paintings using a carefully determined selection of plant and vegetable pigments. As they took form, the paintings’ relation to the winter season became consonant with the artist’s contemplation of old age. While the flower has been used in traditional vanitas paintings to represent impermanence and the inevitability of decay, Clemente depicts blossoms to celebrate the beauty that can be found in all stages of life.
