𝑴𝒐𝒕𝒕𝒐: officially, "Hear Me Roar!", unofficially "A Lannister always pays his debts." 𝑺𝒊𝒈𝒊𝒍: a golden roaring lion on a field of crimson. 𝑻𝒓𝒂𝒊𝒕𝒔: have a reputation for being comely with fair, golden hair and emerald green eyes. Lannisters are known for wearing crimson cloaks, and their household guard are known as the red cloaks.

𝑯𝒐𝒖𝒔𝒆 𝑳𝒂𝒏𝒏𝒊𝒔𝒕𝒆𝒓 𝒊𝒔 one of the Great Houses of the Seven Kingdoms; their seat is Casterly Rock, and their secondary exists close by in Lannisport.

The Warden of the West is a Lannister by tradition. Their gold mines have made the Lannisters the wealthiest of the Great Houses, and the Lannister fleet is anchored at Lannisport.

Through the female line the Lannisters boast of descent from Lann the Clever, the legendary trickster of the Age of Heroes who tricked the members of House Casterly into giving him Casterly Rock during the era of the First Men.

Later marrying Andals, the Lannisters reigned as Kings of the Rock until the Targaryen conquest, when they were defeated at the Field of Fire. King Loren I Lannister's surrender to Aegon the Conqueror allowed the Lannisters to remain the liege lords of the westerlands.

While the great wealth of Casterly Rock was untouched by the Targaryen Conquest, the Lannisters were reduced from kings to lords, and they did not have close ties to the new Targaryen kings. The Lannisters had little presence at the royal court for the first century of Targaryen rule, and no Lannister is mentioned as a member of the small council until the lead-up to the Dance of the Dragons.

During this first century, the noble houses with the closest political connections to the Targaryen dynasty were the Velaryons, Baratheons, Tullys, Hightowers, and Arryns.

ASOIAF ladies as greek goddesses (part 1 ?)

For Cersei, I had also Hera in mind. But I thought Eris and Nike worked well for Cersei and Daenerys as Eris and Nike are sort of opposites in war for example. I think Themis would also fit for Daenerys.

Demeter makes so much sense for Catelyn if we consider Persephone for Sansa. There are some parallels between them that I like.

Hekate is perfect for Melisandre. As for Arya, I know people think of her as Nemesis. And in a sense, it's right. But Artemis is portrayed as a young girl who makes Zeus quite proud. Arya is said to be "wild" and is to connected Nymeria (her direwolf). And I expect it to become much important in the next books.

As for Missandei, I didn't know which goddess to use. I went for the muses because she's well versed in languages and literature (I guess). Eloquence made sense right ? I've seen many different interpretations for Margaery. Aphrodite, Hebe or Persephone among others. I decided for Elpis, because she represented hope for Sansa and the smallfolk, but hope can be bittersweet in greek mythology...

JOHANNA LANNISTER (BORN WESTERLING), REGENT TO LOREON LANNISTER

She capably led the remnants of the shattered Lannister forces in the ongoing conflict with the Greyjoys raiding the coasts, which continued as essentially a localized war even though the Dance had formally ended. Lady Johanna famously donned man's mail to lead the remaining Lannister forces in the struggle to drive the ironborn from their shore. There was a struggle for power among the ironborn after the Red Kraken was murdered at Faircastle a few years later. Since the Lannister fleet had been destroyed by the Greyjoys, Lady Johanna allied with the lord admiral of the Reach, Ser Leo Costayne, to have the westermen invade the Iron Islands in 134 AC. When Rodrik Greyjoy was taken to Casterly Rock as a captive, Lady Johanna had him gelded and made him her son's fool. Lady Johanna also helped reclaim the dwindling glory of House Lannister and lent gold to King's Landing to help rebuild the extensive damages caused by the previous civil war.
