langblrwotdchallenge #5: comfort, il conforto
위안, 위로, 편안함 -
For what I am getting after a research: 위로 relieving pain/soothing sadness with words/actions; 위안 = comforting or making someone feel better or the object that gives comfort; 편안함 = comfortable (physical comfortability). Is it so? Papago tends to use 위로 much more often in its translations... Are the first two actually interchangeable? @profiterole-reads @punkinvsblogging can any of you help me on this please? Or anyone really... Would appreciate loads, thanks!
몇 문장 보자:
자연이 저를 위로해요.
이 소파는 정말 편안해요.
민 씨는 그의 말로 저를 위안했어요.
edit: -> 위로 the act of consoling; 위안 (위로를 받아) the state of being consoled SO (kind of):
난 그 책의 말을 정말 위안했어요.
제 친구가 좀 슬퍼해서 우리 같이 위로하려고 산책했어요.

(in italian we often use the english word "*il* comfort" for physical comfort, but we use "il conforto" for the emotional one - there are also synonyms tho).

Langblr word of the day challenge, day 1
Tumblr media
дождь / rain
Masculine noun.
If I was to say, "It's raining", I would say "Дождь идёт".
"Cloudy" is "облачно".
"Thunderstorm" is "гроза", which is a feminine noun.
"Umbrella" is "зонтик", and I'm sure the Finnish colloquial term for an umbrella, "sontikka", comes from the Russian word "зонтик", which is a masculine noun. (The official word for an umbrella in Finnish is "sateenvarjo".)
And if it rains too much, the result may be a flood. The verb being "наводнить", and the noun being "наводнение". It is a neuter noun.

Feelings as Gaeilge
Saying how you feel in Irish can be a little tricky since you have to use a different sentece structure that you would do in English (or most of the European langs). The phrase “I’m happy” translated literally to English would be “the happiness is on me“, so you have to use the sentece structure as follows:
Tá athás orm - I’m happy ('ar mé’ is merged into one word ‘orm’)
Keep in mind that the verb always comes first in Irish sentence! Then, for other persons, the senteces go like this:
Tá athás ort - you are happy Tá brón air - he is sad Tá fearg uirthi - she is angry Tá imní orainn - we are worried Tá díomá oraibh - you are disappointed Tá ionadh orthu - they are suprised
sceitimíní - excited náire - embareassed éad - jealous tuirseach - tired cumhach - homesick
Some more advanced phrases (that doesn’t follow the same rule tho):
Tá féileacáin i mo bholg - I have butterflies in my stomach Tá sé in ísle brí - he is feeling blue Tá me spíonta amach - I am exhausted Tá siad ar mhuin na muice - they’re on the pig’s back (meaning that they are extremely lucky)

Introducing a new langblr challenge... Langblr Word of the Day Challenge!
Hi all! I feel like I've not been making enough original langblr content lately, so I decided to make a langblr challenge! This challenge is quite simple and quite flexible: it starts on the first of February, and every day for the month has a different word (the word of the day). Your challenge is to use the word in your language learning that day, in whatever capacity you feel like! Here are a couple of ideas:
Translate the word into your target language
Find a synonym and/or an antonym for the word
Write a paragraph (or more) based around the word
Write one sentence containing the word
Learn 5 words related to the word
Create a vocab list based around the word
Search the word on unsplash, find a picture you like and describe it
Read and share an article related to the word/with the word in the title
Listen to a podcast about the word/with the word in the title
Watch an episode of a TV show about the word/with the word in the title
Have a conversation with a native or another learner about the topic
Feel free to interpret the word as literally or as creatively as you like.
Here's the word list - feel free to brainstorm some ideas ahead of time:
rain
love
memory
time
comfort
desire
flight
fun
song
puzzle
peace
sunshine
truth
curious
freedom
gift
rest
trust
letter
library
forest

Use the hashtag #langblrwotdchallenge so we can find each other and check out each other’s posts. If you want to tag me too, I would absolutely love that!

Langblr Word of the Day 04 - Emergency
日本語:緊急(きんきゅう)
youtube
Here’s a video with first aid (応急手当て - おうきゅうてあ)tips for when you encounter someone suffering from heat stroke. For listening practice, I wrote a transcript of the tips (in italics) and highlighted and translated some vocabulary (nouns, verbs, adjectives/adverbs). I always learn vocabulary best when I see how it's used in the context of a sentence.
1)声をかけて意識の有無を確認する Raise your voice and check for consciousness
熱中症になりやすい環境でぐったりしている人を見かけたら、まずは声をかけて意識の有無を確認しましょう。
熱中症(ねっちゅうしょう)heat stroke
ぐったりする to faint / collapse
意識の有無を確認する(いしき・あるない・かくにん)to check for consciousness
(A)意識がある場合 When the person is conscious
A1)涼しい場所へ移動させる Move them to a cool location
涼しい場所へ移動させます。屋外は木陰などに連れて行きましょう。室内でエアコンがあれば、冷房を最強にし、うちわや扇風機も使って直接風をあてます。
移動させる (いどう)to transfer (a person or thing) to a different place
屋外・室内(おくがい・しつない)outdoors / indoors
扇風機(せんぷうき)electrical fan
A2)衣服をゆるめ、体を冷やす Loosen their clothes and cool their body
水で絞ったタオルで体を覆い、風を送って体を冷やします。ベルトやバタンがあれば、ゆるめて楽な姿勢にします。冷やすポイントです。冷たいペットボトルなどがあれば、首、脇の下、太ももの付け根などを集中的に冷やすと効果的です。
衣服をゆるめる(いふく)to loosen clothing
体を冷やす(からだ・ひ)to cool the body
楽な姿勢にする(らく・しせい)to put in a comfortable position
A3)水分・塩分を摂取させる Have the person ingest water and salt
水分を取らせましょう。あれば、スポーツドリンクや薄い食塩水など飲ませます。ただし、吐いてしまう場合は飲ませないでください。点滴による水分補給が必要かもしれないので、医療機関を受診させましょう。
吐く(は)to vomit
医療機関を受診させる (いりょうきかん・じゅしん)to seek medical attention
A4)状態がよくなった確認 Verify that the person’s condition has improved
状態がよくなった確認します。安静にして十分に休息をとっても、症状が改善しない場合は医療機関を受診させましょう。
十分に休息をとる (じゅうぶん・きゅうそく)to get a good rest
症状が改善する(しょうじょう・かいぜん)symptoms improve
(B)意識がない場合 When the person is unconscious
B1)すぐに救急車を呼ぶ Immediately call an ambulance
呼び掛けに反応せず、意識がない場合は、何よりも先に救急車を呼んでください。迷わず119番することが命を救うことにつながります!
救急車を呼ぶ(きゅうきゅうしゃ・よ)to call an ambulance
迷わず(まよ)without hesitating
命を救う(いのち・すくう)to save a life
B2)涼しい場所へ移動させ、衣服をゆるめ、体を冷やす Move the person to a cool location, loosen clothing, and cool the body
救急車を待っている間に涼しい場所へ運び、衣服をゆるめ、体を冷やします。重傷者の救命は、一刻に早く体温を下げられるにかかっています。救急車が来るまで、首、脇の下、太ももの付け根を集中的に冷やし続けます。水で絞ったタオルで体を覆い、風を送って体を冷やします。意識がない時に水を飲ませると窒息する危険があるので水を絶対に飲まさないでください。
窒息する危険(ちっそく・きけん)danger of suffocating

Langblr WOTD Challenge Day 19 & Day 20
carta (f.) - der Brief- letter
biblioteca (f.)

i started playing acnh in japanese! it's great fun and i feel like it's helping to improve my reading speed and get used to sentence structure, even if some of the sentence endings are really weird...
if you're looking for a different way to practice your language skills, you should give playing in your target language a try!
about this picture, i'd like to try a new challenge i found! maybe i'll actually get to the end of this one...
but for now let's start with day one of the Langblr Word of the Day Challenge by @nordic-language-love (thank you for the challenge!!)
Today's word is Rain.
*ineterestingly there are two words for hail, 雹 (ひょう) and 霰 (あられ). the distinction between the two is the diameter of the hailstones,
if the hailstone is 5mm or smaller, you use 霰 (あられ)
if the hailstone is bigger than 5mm, you use 雹 (ひょう)
not sure whose first thought upon seeing hail is to measure it but there you go.
below is a image showing the differences from this website that explains how hail is formed and how the weight affects the speed ... apparently 70mm hailstone can travel at 140km... thats kinda terrifying...
Tumblr media
そろそろポストを終わろうね!
みんなさん、雨が好きですか?雨の曲知っていますかな?ぜひ教えてね!
では、またね!

langblrwotdchallenge #3: memory, il ricordo
(so "memory" in english and french works both for your mind's ability and what you remember; while in italian, korean and spanish you have different words -tell me if im wrong ofc).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
song of the day
아주 NICE in my mind today tbh and yes it is totally unrelated to the topic but whatevs... honestly if I have to think about "memory" THIS is the first song popping up in my mind:
i'm only half surprised of how well i still remember its lyrics and how much it still pains me. and this is the second

Langblr Word of the Day Challenge
Day 8: Direction
Directions have fun names in Finnish and I will probably never remember them properly! :D
Tumblr media
pääilmansuunnat:
pohjoinen - north (pohja means the bottom of sth so that’s kind of confusing since north is at the top of the compass. Maybe Finns were thinking the other way around?) itä - east etelä - south länsi - west
väli-ilmansuunnat:
luode - northwest lounas - southwest (lounas also means lunch, and the original word means midday/south, which is also something we say in Hungarian. Except it’s NOT south but southwest :’D) kaakko - southeast (might originate from a word meaning the direction where migratory birds come from. It does sound like a bird!) koillinen - northeast
I suppose I could at least remember that the two l-ones are next to länsi, and the two k-ones are on the other side.
