You brush the dirt off your hands, glancing proudly at the roses you’ve just planted. The soil is warm under your fingers, and you lean back, wiping sweat from your forehead. A small smile plays on your lips as you admire the neat rows of blooms, but your peace is broken when you hear your name being called.
You turn, blinking against the sunlight, and spot your grandfather standing by the patio, his brows furrowed in that way he always does when he’s trying to look serious. Lando stands beside him, grinning widely, and next to him is someone you don’t recognize—a tall guy with messy brown hair and a quiet expression.
Your grandfather calls again, his voice a little sharper now. “Come here for a moment.”
You dust your hands off on your shorts and shuffle over, feeling the light breeze cool the sweat on your skin. Lando’s grin widens as you approach. “Still playing in the dirt, I see,” he teases.
“Always,” you respond, flashing him a playful smile. Your gaze drifts to the new guy, and your curiosity piques. He stands a little more stiffly than Lando, like he’s not quite sure what to do with himself. There’s something about the way he glances at you—polite, but distant—that makes you feel like you’re meeting someone important.
“This is Oscar Piastri,” Lando says, nudging the guy next to him. “Newest McLaren driver.”
Oscar smiles at you, though it’s small and a bit shy, like he’s not used to all the attention. “Hi,” he says, his accent lilting in a way that catches your attention.
“Hi,” you reply, a little awkward, but you can’t help but smile back. You try to remember if you’ve heard his name before, but your mind draws a blank. Racing was never something you followed closely, even if it was always around you.
Before you can say anything else, your grandfather clears his throat, his eyes twinkling with something that makes you uneasy. “Oscar’s a fine driver,” he says, his voice heavy with authority. “I think it would be good for you two to spend some time together.”
You blink, feeling the weight of his words settle over you. “Wait… what?”
Your grandfather’s expression doesn’t falter. He crosses his arms, the hint of a smirk on his lips. “Oscar, are you single?” he asks, turning the conversation before you can even process what he’s suggesting.
Oscar looks a little startled, his eyes darting from your grandfather to you, then back again. “Uh, yes, sir,” he answers, and you notice his fingers fidget slightly, like he’s not sure how to react either.
“Good,” your grandfather replies, his tone firm. “Then I suggest you take my granddaughter out on a date.”
You feel your cheeks warm, your mouth dropping open slightly. “A—date?”
Oscar looks as surprised as you feel, and for a second, you’re not sure who’s more uncomfortable. But then he nods, his voice soft but steady. “If that’s what you want, sir.”
You don’t know what to say. You glance at Oscar, who looks just as confused as you are, but there’s something in his gaze—something careful and maybe even curious. He doesn’t seem like the type to argue with your grandfather, and honestly, neither are you.
Lando, ever the instigator, lets out a low chuckle. “Well, this just got interesting.”
You smile awkwardly, not sure what to make of it all. Oscar offers you a small, almost apologetic smile, and you feel a strange flutter in your chest. Maybe it won’t be so bad. He seems nice enough, and if nothing else, it’ll be a chance to get to know him.
The next day, you find yourself standing in front of a trendy restaurant in the heart of the city. It’s not the quiet, tucked-away café you were imagining, but rather a bustling spot with large windows, modern decor, and a steady stream of people coming and going. Your stomach twists with nervous excitement as you spot Oscar standing by the entrance, looking cool and collected in a crisp white shirt and dark jeans.
“Hey,” he greets you with a brief smile, his hands in his pockets. There’s a casual confidence in the way he stands, but something about his demeanor feels a little… distant, like he’s already halfway checked out of the conversation before it even begins.
“Hey,” you reply, smiling back as he steps aside to let you walk in first. The restaurant hums with energy—clinking glasses, soft chatter, and the occasional laugh. You feel a little out of place, like maybe this is fancier than you were expecting.
Oscar pulls out your chair, but there’s something about the motion that feels more like routine than a thoughtful gesture. As you sit down, he moves quickly to his own seat, already glancing at the menu like this is just another pit stop in his day.
“So, you like this place?” you ask, trying to break the ice.
“Yeah,” Oscar says with a short nod, eyes still scanning the menu. “It’s close by, and the food’s good. His tone is polite, but there’s an edge to it, like he’s keeping things at arm’s length.
You fiddle with your napkin, glancing around at the other patrons—groups of friends laughing together, couples holding hands. You can’t help but feel a little self-conscious. You were hoping for something quieter, more personal, but this feels… different.
The waiter comes by, and you both place your orders. Oscar seems at ease, chatting with the waiter casually, but when his attention turns back to you, there’s a moment of awkward silence. You search for something to say, but it’s hard to get a read on him. He’s polite, sure, but there’s a wall up—one you can’t quite figure out how to get past.
“So, what do you do for fun?” you ask, trying to steer the conversation into something light.
Oscar leans back, shrugging a little. “Mostly training, to be honest. Racing takes up a lot of my time.”
You nod, not sure what to say next. He’s not giving you much to work with, and you start to wonder if this was a bad idea. Maybe he’s just busy, or maybe he’s just not interested. Either way, the conversation feels stilted, like you’re trying too hard to fill the gaps.
“Do you follow F1?” he asks, breaking the silence.
You bite your lip, feeling a little embarrassed. “Honestly, not really,” you admit. “I mean, I know about it because of my family, but I’ve never really been that into it.”
Oscar raises an eyebrow, a faint smirk playing on his lips. “Kind of ironic, don’t you think?”
You flush slightly, not sure how to take that. “Yeah, I guess so.”
He doesn’t push further, just takes a sip of his water and glances out the window, his mind seemingly elsewhere. You feel a flicker of disappointment. This wasn’t how you imagined your first date going—Oscar seemed nice enough, but there’s a coolness to him that you can’t shake.
As the food arrives, you try to make the best of the situation, steering the conversation back to lighter topics. You talk about your garden again, hoping to spark some interest, but while Oscar listens, he doesn’t offer much in return. Every now and then, he glances at his phone, not enough to be rude, but enough to make you wonder if he’s distracted by something else.
“Sorry,” he says once, slipping the phone back into his pocket. “Just… work stuff.”
You nod, trying to brush it off, but it adds to the growing sense that maybe this date isn’t a priority for him. You had expected a chance to connect, to get to know him beyond the racer image, but it feels like you’re barely scratching the surface.
Still, you don’t want to give up just yet.
“Have you always wanted to be a driver?” you ask, genuinely curious.
Oscar’s gaze flicks to you, his expression softening slightly. “Yeah, since I was a kid. I was pretty focused on it, even when I was younger. It’s all I’ve ever really wanted to do.”
For a moment, you see a glimpse of something more—a passion that runs deep, something that makes him tick. But just as quickly as it appears, it’s gone again, his expression neutral once more.
The rest of the meal passes in a blur of small talk and polite conversation, but the spark you had hoped for never really comes. As the check arrives, Oscar pulls out his card without hesitation, glancing at you with a half-smile.
“Ready to head out?” he asks.
You nod, feeling a little deflated, but you don’t want to show it. Maybe this was just a bad day for him. Maybe he’s just not the type to open up easily. Either way, you feel like there’s something you’re missing, something that keeps him at a distance.
As you both step out into the cool evening air, Oscar walks you to the curb where his car is parked. He pauses for a moment, looking at you, and for a brief second, you wonder if he’s going to say something that might change the tone of the evening.
But instead, he just smiles—a little tired, a little distracted. “It was nice hanging out with you,” he says, his tone polite but nothing more.
“Yeah, it was,” you reply, trying to match his energy, though the words feel hollow.
Oscar opens the car door for you, and as you slide in, you can’t help but wonder what’s really going on behind those guarded eyes. There’s something he’s not telling you—something that keeps him from fully being here with you.
As he drives you home, the silence between you grows, and you find yourself staring out the window, wondering if maybe you were hoping for too much too soon.
Despite the awkwardness of the first date, Oscar lingers in your thoughts more than you’d like to admit. There’s something about him—his quiet intensity, the way he carries himself—that draws you in, even if he hasn’t fully opened up to you yet. Maybe it’s just the mystery of it all. Or maybe it’s the fact that he’s unlike anyone you’ve dated before.
Your crush sneaks up on you slowly. You catch yourself thinking about what you’ll wear next time you see him. You imagine different scenarios in your head—how the next date might go, whether he’ll be more relaxed, more present. You convince yourself that it’s just a matter of time.
When the next race rolls around, you decide to attend. You tell yourself it’s because you’re supporting McLaren, but deep down, you know it’s because of Oscar. Even though things were a little off between you two, there’s a part of you that’s eager to see him again. Maybe things will be different this time.
The race is packed with spectators, and the air hums with excitement. As you weave through the crowds, you feel a mixture of nerves and anticipation. Watching Oscar on the track feels different now—you’re not just another fan in the stands. You’re here for him, and that thought makes your heart race a little faster.
The race itself is thrilling, and you can’t help but feel happiness as Oscar crosses the finish line. He doesn’t win, but he holds his own, finishing in a solid position. You smile, thinking about how you’ll congratulate him afterward.
After the race, you find your way to the paddock, your heart pounding in your chest as you spot Oscar among the throngs of people. He’s surrounded by his team, all smiles and handshakes as they celebrate a job well done. When he sees you, his expression flickers for a moment—recognition, maybe a touch of something softer—but it’s gone just as quickly as it appears.
“Hey,” you greet him, your voice a little too bright. “Congrats on the race.”
“Thanks,” Oscar replies, offering you a polite smile. His demeanor is cool, but not unfriendly—just… reserved. You start to notice the subtle distance between you, like he’s here, but not entirely.
“Maybe we could grab a drink later?” you suggest, your tone casual, but your nerves bubbling beneath the surface.
Oscar glances at his watch, then back at you. “Yeah, maybe. Let’s see how the rest of the day goes.”
It’s not a no, but it’s not exactly the enthusiastic yes you were hoping for either. Still, you brush it off, telling yourself that he’s probably just tired from the race.
You stand there for a moment, watching Oscar disappear into the crowd. There’s a strange feeling lingering in your chest—something about the interaction seemed… off. But before you can get too deep in your thoughts, a familiar voice breaks through.
“Already scaring him off?” Lando teases, sidling up to you with his usual playful grin.
You turn to him, laughing despite yourself. “Please, Lando. I’m not that terrifying.”
He leans against the nearby barrier, looking at you with a twinkle in his eye. “Nah, just a little intimidating with your… I don’t know, your knowledge of roses or whatever.”
You roll your eyes, giving him a light shove. “Not my fault you have no appreciation for fine horticulture.”
“Fine horticulture,” he repeats with mock seriousness, his lips twitching into a smirk. “But seriously, how’s it going? Did Oscar hit you with that ‘strong and silent’ routine, or is he actually saying words now?”
You pause, trying to figure out how to answer. “He’s… quiet, yeah. But I think there’s more to him than he lets on.”
Lando hums, crossing his arms. “Oh, there’s definitely more. Just give him time. Maybe flash him a few more of those smiles—you know, the ones that make people all… swoony.”
You laugh, shaking your head. “I’ll be sure to use my superpowers wisely, then.”
Before Lando can retort, Oscar’s figure appears again, cutting through the crowd and making his way back toward you both. You feel a flutter of surprise. He was distant before, but now there’s a new intensity in his gaze.
“Hey,” Oscar says, glancing briefly at Lando before turning to you. “I was thinking, maybe we could grab those drinks after all?”
You blink, taken aback. “Yeah? I thought you weren’t sure about it earlier.”
Oscar shrugs slightly, the corners of his mouth lifting into the faintest of smiles. “Changed my mind. If you’re still up for it.”
Lando snickers quietly next to you, clearly amused by the shift in Oscar’s tone. “Well, that sounds like a yes to me.”
You can’t help but smile, a warm excitement bubbling up inside you. “Yeah, I’d like that.”
The bar Oscar takes you to is tucked away in the city, with low lighting and soft music humming in the background. It’s more intimate than the first restaurant—smaller, cozier. It makes you feel like this is something real, like there’s something between you both that’s beginning to take shape.
You sit across from each other at a small table, nursing drinks, and for a while, the conversation flows. Oscar’s a bit more relaxed than usual, and it makes you feel like maybe you’re finally cracking the surface, finally getting to see the person behind the cool, quiet exterior.
“So,” you say, taking a sip of your drink. “What made you change your mind? You seemed… hesitant before.”
Oscar looks at you for a moment, like he’s trying to come up with the right words. “I guess I just thought it might be fun after all. Figured it couldn’t hurt to get to know each other better.”
You smile, feeling a flutter of hope. “Yeah. I’m glad you did.”
For a few more minutes, the conversation rolls on, and you find yourself leaning into it—into him. He’s attentive, even charming in his own way, and you can’t help but feel your heart begin to race a little faster. But then, just as things seem to settle into a comfortable rhythm, his phone lights up on the table.
You catch a glimpse of the screen out of the corner of your eye—a name you don’t recognize, followed by a few messages that he quickly swipes away without reading. It’s subtle, almost like he’s trying not to let you see it, but the moment leaves a faint unease in the back of your mind.
You push the feeling aside, convincing yourself it’s nothing. Probably just a friend or someone from the team. But when his phone lights up again, this time with a more persistent vibration, it’s harder to ignore.
“Everything okay?” you ask, trying to keep your voice casual.
“Yeah,” Oscar says, his tone clipped as he checks his phone again before silencing it. “Just some messages. Nothing important.”
You nod, but the way he’s so quick to brush it off leaves you feeling unsettled. It’s like there’s a part of him still walled off, something he’s not telling you. But you don’t press, don’t want to ruin the moment.
As the evening goes on, you notice him glancing at his phone a few more times. The distraction is subtle, but it’s there, casting a small shadow over what otherwise feels like a perfect night.
You try to brush it off, reminding yourself that he’s a busy guy—he probably has a million things going on at once. But as the drinks dwindle and the conversation slows, you can’t help but feel like there’s something—or someone—else that’s occupying his thoughts.
The days after your drink date are… strange. You had hoped that spending more time with Oscar would bring you closer together, but instead, things feel more distant than ever. He’s not cold, not exactly, but there’s a guardedness to him that wasn’t there before.
He texts you, asks how you’re doing, but it’s never as warm as you want it to be. You tell yourself that maybe he’s just busy, that it’s just part of being a driver in such a high-stakes sport. But deep down, there’s a little voice in your head whispering that something isn’t right.
You push it aside, trying to focus on the excitement of seeing him again. When he suggests going to the beach, you jump at the chance, eager to spend more time with him.
The breeze is warm, a gentle contrast to the coolness of the sand beneath your feet as you walk side by side with Oscar. The beach is quieter than usual, only a few scattered people, and the rhythmic crash of the waves fills the gaps between your conversation. There’s a lightness to the moment—a sense of possibility. You sneak a glance at Oscar, feeling a small spark of excitement flutter in your chest.
You tell yourself not to read too much into it. But there’s a softness in his smile when he looks at you, a hint of something more, and you can’t help but wonder if this is what falling for someone is supposed to feel like.
“You’ve been quiet,” Oscar says, his voice cutting through the hum of the waves. He nudges you lightly with his arm, a playful gesture that makes you smile despite the nervousness you’ve felt creeping in since the start of the date.
“Just… thinking,” you reply, your eyes drifting out to the horizon where the sun is starting to dip low. “This is nice, though. I like spending time with you.”
You mean it. Despite the moments of awkwardness and the hesitations that have clouded your other dates, something about being here—walking with him along the shoreline—feels right. You’ve never had a relationship that felt this natural before. There’s always been some underlying expectation, some hidden motive from the people in your life who wanted you for your family’s name and status.
But with Oscar, you want to believe it’s different. You want to believe he likes you for you.
Oscar clears his throat, breaking the moment. “Yeah, it’s been good,” he says, his tone almost too casual. There’s a flicker of discomfort behind his words, like he’s trying to keep things light.
Before you can dwell on it, a voice cuts through the air, drawing both of your attentions.
“Oscar! Is that really you?”
You turn, and your heart sinks as you see a tall, stunning woman walking toward the two of you. She’s dressed effortlessly, her dark hair pulled into a sleek ponytail, and she carries herself with a confidence that immediately makes you feel small.
Oscar’s reaction is immediate—his posture stiffens, his eyes darting away from yours as he rubs the back of his neck. “Hey, uh… didn’t expect to see you here.
Her eyes flick between you and Oscar, a knowing smile playing on her lips as she takes in the sight of you together. “It’s been a while,” she says, her tone smooth, easy. “Didn’t think you’d be back in town.”
You stand there awkwardly, unsure of what to do or say, and the moment stretches painfully long. The familiarity between them is palpable, and a sinking feeling starts to form in your stomach.
“I’m just here for a bit,” Oscar replies, his voice suddenly lacking the warmth it had moments ago. He seems uncomfortable—like he’s trying to get through this interaction as quickly as possible.
The woman shifts her gaze to you, her smile widening just enough to make you feel scrutinized. “And who’s this?” she asks, as if you’re a new accessory she’s appraising.
You offer a small, polite smile, though your chest feels tight. “I’m—”
“Just a friend,” Oscar cuts in quickly, his voice sharp and clipped.
The words hang in the air, and your breath catches. You look at him, confused, hurt—but he won’t meet your gaze. The woman gives a small, almost amused laugh before waving it off.
“Well, I won’t keep you,” she says with a teasing tone, her eyes lingering on Oscar for just a second too long. “Catch you later, Piastri.”
With that, she walks away, her footsteps light on the sand, leaving you standing there in stunned silence. The sound of the waves seems distant now, like you’re underwater, and the weight of what Oscar just said presses heavily on your chest.
Just a friend.
You force yourself to swallow the lump forming in your throat, pretending the words didn’t sting as much as they did. “Who was that?” you ask quietly, trying to keep your voice steady.
Oscar sighs, his hand dropping to his side. “No one important,” he says, though the tension in his voice betrays him. He turns to look at you, but there’s something distant in his eyes—something guarded that wasn’t there before.
You nod slowly, feeling a pang of disappointment settle deep in your chest. The connection you thought you were building suddenly feels fragile, like it could shatter at any moment.
For the rest of the walk along the beach, neither of you says much. The easy conversation, the subtle glances—all of it feels like it’s gone. Replaced by a silence that only grows heavier with each step.
You’re quiet when you get home, your heart heavy with the weight of everything that happened at the beach. You try to shake it off, but the look in Oscar’s eyes, the tension between him and Ellie—it’s all you can think about.
Your grandfather is in the sitting room when you walk in, his expression softening when he sees you.
“How was the date?” he asks, his voice gentle.
You open your mouth to respond, but the words get caught in your throat. You want to tell him it was fine, that everything’s okay—but you can’t lie. Not this time.
“Please,” you whisper, your voice trembling, “don’t force people to like me.”
Your grandfather’s face falls, his brow furrowing in concern. He reaches out to you, but you pull away, the tears already starting to form.
“I just… I don’t want to be an obligation,” you say, your voice breaking. “I want someone to like me because they want to—not because they feel like they have to.”
That night, after you’ve retreated to your room, your grandfather makes a call. He doesn’t tell you about it, doesn’t let on that he’s taken matters into his own hands. When Oscar picks up, he’s met with your grandfather’s firm voice.
“I’m sending the two of you to the ranch in Texas,” your grandfather says. “You’ll leave tomorrow.”
Oscar tries to protest, but your grandfather won’t hear it. “You’ll go,” he says, his tone leaving no room for argument. “You owe her that much.”
You sat in the plush leather seat of your grandfather’s private jet, the tension between you and Oscar thick and palpable. Neither of you had spoken much since the beach incident, and you weren’t sure how you felt about being sent off to Texas together. The thought of spending more time with him, especially after everything that had happened, made your stomach churn.
Oscar sat across from you, his eyes flickering up occasionally, as if he was gathering the courage to say something, but each time, the words seemed to die in his throat. You focused on the window instead, watching the runway lights blur as the plane took off.
“I know you’re upset,” Oscar finally said, breaking the silence, his voice quiet yet steady. “I want to explain, but I don’t think words are enough right now.”
You glanced at him, biting the inside of your cheek. Part of you wanted to hear him out, to understand why he had been so distant, but another part of you didn’t care anymore. The truth was, you felt used—like you were just another part of the game, just another person he didn’t really care about.
“I don’t want to hear it right now,” you said, shaking your head. “We’ll go on this trip, but when we get back to London, we tell my grandfather that it didn’t work out. And Oscar…” You hesitated, the weight of your next words crushing you. “Please don’t let anyone know that I was the other woman.”
Oscar’s face twisted, regret filling his expression. “I swear, I won’t say a word.”
You nodded, turning away from him. The rest of the flight passed in heavy silence.
When you arrived in Texas, the sprawling estate greeted you with its endless fields and the familiar scent of wildflowers. Despite the awkwardness between you and Oscar, the comfort of being home, away from the pressures of your world, settled over you. As soon as you were alone, you made your way to the garden.
The garden had always been your escape—a place where you could get lost in the rhythm of tending to the plants. As you knelt in the dirt, your fingers delicately brushing over the leaves of the roses, you found solace in the simplicity of the task. You weren’t sure how long you’d been there, but the sun was starting to dip low in the sky when you finally stood up, wiping your dirty hands on your jeans.
Unbeknownst to you, Oscar had been watching from a distance. He stayed near the old oak tree at the edge of the garden, watching as you moved gracefully through the rows of flowers, completely absorbed in your work. There was something peaceful about the way you lost yourself here—so different from the world of fast cars and expectations.
He leaned back against the tree, his mind racing. He wasn’t sure how he’d fix this—how he could make things right after everything he had done. Watching you, Oscar realized how much he had hurt you, and it wasn’t just the beach incident that weighed on him. It was everything—the emotional distance, the Ellie situation, the lies he had told himself.
But for now, he kept his distance, unsure of how to approach you or if you’d even want him to. You, lost in your world of flowers and dirt, were completely unaware of his gaze.
As the night crept in, you finally left the garden, retreating back inside the house. Oscar stayed behind, his thoughts heavy. For the first time in a long while, he wasn’t thinking about his career, his public image, or what other people wanted from him. He was thinking about you.
The morning sun was bright as you headed to the stables, hoping a horseback ride might clear your head. Despite still being upset with Oscar, you welcomed the chance to be alone in the fresh air.
As you prepared your horse, Oscar approached, looking out of place. He glanced around nervously and gave you a hesitant smile.
“Morning,” he said. “I thought I’d join you, if that’s okay.”
You barely glanced at him, focusing on securing your saddle. “Sure. If you think you’re up for it.”
Oscar tried to act composed, though his eyes darted nervously at the horses. He awkwardly mounted his steed with the help of a stable hand, gripping the reins as if they were a lifeline.
As you led the way onto the trail, your horse trotting confidently, Oscar’s horse lagged behind, its rider stiff and uncertain. You could hear him muttering to himself, trying to calm his nerves.
“So, what’s it like riding horses?” Oscar called out, his voice a bit too loud, trying to mask his fear.
“It’s not as bad as you think,” you replied curtly, keeping your distance both physically and emotionally. You weren’t in the mood for small talk, especially not with Oscar, given the recent tension.
The trail wound through picturesque fields, and as the minutes passed, Oscar’s discomfort was evident. His horse seemed to be enjoying itself a little too much, leading to a few unplanned jolts that made Oscar clutch the reins tightly.
At one point, his horse decided to trot faster, and Oscar’s face turned pale as he tried to control it. “I think it’s going to bolt!” he shouted, trying to sound calm but clearly panicking.
You slowed your horse, turning to watch with a mixture of amusement and sympathy. “Just breathe and let the horse do the work. It’s not going to run off.”
Oscar managed to regain some control, though he looked more like he was bracing for a bumpy ride than enjoying it. “Easy for you to say,” he replied, trying to laugh off his fear. “You make it look so effortless.”
You remained distant, nodding but not engaging further. “Just keep your hands steady and trust the horse.”
By the time you returned to the stables, Oscar dismounted with an audible sigh of relief. His face was flushed, but there was a small smile of accomplishment as he looked at you. “Thanks for letting me tag along. I guess it wasn’t as bad as I thought, but I think I’ll stick to less adventurous activities in the future.”
You gave a noncommittal nod, barely meeting his eyes. “You did alright. Maybe next time, we’ll try something less… unpredictable.”
Finally, the time came to return to London. The flight was quiet, each of you lost in your own thoughts. When you arrived back at your grandfather’s estate, you both faced him, sitting in his study.
“We talked,” you said, trying to keep your voice steady. “And we’ve decided that it’s best if we just remain friends.”
Your grandfather’s gaze shifted between you and Oscar, disappointment and concern etched on his face. “Are you sure about this?”
“Yes,” you affirmed, nodding firmly. “It’s the best decision for both of us.”
Oscar added, “I appreciate everything your grandfather’s done for me, but I agree. We should just be friends.”
Your grandfather sighed, looking at Oscar with a mix of sympathy and understanding. “Very well. I’ll respect your decision.”
As you and Oscar left the study, you found yourself rushing toward your room, letting the tears fall freely down your cheeks.
You weren’t sure why you were crying, maybe it’s because you genuinely felt something with him or you thought you did.
Oscar Piastri was making you go crazy.

nataliaruiz when we were little kids and anyone asked you, 'what's your biggest dream?' your answer was always the same, 'to become a formula 1 driver and win the monaco grand prix' then you became an f1 driver and your biggest dream was to win the monaco grand prix, to make your country proud, to make your papa proud. year after year, it was disappointment after disappointment, but something changed this year, this year you had hope, more than you've ever had before. this year you told me, 'i'm going to win this. i'm not taking anything less than a win." you finally did it, you broke the 'curse' that had been bestowed upon you. and i am so glad i got to witness you do it.

the interviewer asks lando questions about max and the crowd starts booing and there max's good friend, for whom his friendship is so important, continues laughing without doing anything to defend him or tell them to stop. I really don't understand Max, how he can want a friendship like this
lando has been saying things like this since november
Tumblr media
i believe that while their friendship started as genuine, lando is seriously acting immature and objectively as bad friend. repeatedly.
i'm not here to psychoanalyze people's friendships and if they deserve better but i think lando needs to change his behaviour if he ever wants to gain at least a bit of trust after this week because he instigated the most unnecessary british media witch hunt on his "friend" just because he couldn't control what he was saying.
bare in mind he was also making faces when max was mentioned in an interview yesterday so like... yeah. i dont know, his behaviour just icks me bc i cant stand him being so immature but AGAIN, i wont get into psychoanalyzing, not here for that lol
also think everyone backing up max today in front of press took a toll on him

any oscar and little lando drabbles?
i been thinking about the first time Oscar gets into trouble, i can imagine Lando being there as some kind of instigator, and then feeling very bad he’s put Oscar in this position as well.
then again Oscar might land himself in a time out all on his own accord and then i think Lando’d feel worried for his teammate, continuously asking Daniel “how long left?” and “what if he gets too sad?” and “just a quick hug?”
or,
They’ve been playing with the spare balloons from Oscar’s birthday. The boys are being good, playing so nicely together Daniel feels comfortable enough to take his eyes off of them for a few minutes to answer some emails.
One of the balloons escapes outside through the cracked door onto the balcony, and the soft breezes blows it a little further over the railing, onto a partial roof below.
“Careful!” Daniel hears Lando say, and it catches his attention enough to look up to see where Lando’s looking, catching Oscar with one leg already over the railing ready to go retrieve the balloon they’re after.
Except Daniel fucking teleports there, snatches Oscar’s waist and pulls him off the railing. It’s not a death drop, and truthfully any capable adult would have been able to retrieve said balloon with little risk.
But Oscar isn’t a full adult right now, probably not as regressed as Lando is, but definitely floaty, and Daniel’s not about to take that risk.
“You do not go over that railing, do you understand me? That’s a really big no-no!” Daniel scolds, turning Oscar to face him and tipping his chin up, his own heart beating out of his chest from the adrenaline rush, fear coursing through his body.
Oscar’s eyes fill with tears immediately, not yet having experienced this Daniel first hand and takes a shaky breath, barely getting out a “Yea.” before it’s followed by a sob.
Daniel immediately brings Oscar into his chest, the younger burying himself into Daniel’s T-shirt as the sobs kick off. The adrenaline’s wearing off quick now that the danger has gone away and Daniel feels a ping of guilt for how he’s probably scared the little guy sobbing into his chest and so he does his best to calm him down, gently maneuvering them inside to where Lando’s watching everything unfold with big eyes.
Said brunette scurries off then, while Daniel whispers soft reassurance into Oscar’s mop of hair, gently rubbing his back while they settle onto the couch.
Lando returns quickly, arms full of what Daniel thinks is every single toy/plush they’ve brought with them before dumping them onto the couch and fitting himself with it too, gently curling up next to Oscar.
“Osc.” Lando hums, gently petting his friend. “I got you stuff.”
It gets Oscar to peak out, face red and blotchy from crying and Daniel instinctively tries to brush the tears away, pressing a soft kiss to Oscar’s head.
“See?” Lando says, gesturing at all the stuff he’s surrounded by.
Oscar goes to reach out for his giraffe Louie, then snatches his hand back to look at Daniel questioningly, wondering if he’s allowed.
Daniel seems to understand, gently brushing some of Oscar’s hair back. “You can grab him buddy, you’re not in trouble.”
And so Oscar snatches Louie up, cuddles back into Daniel’s chest with a shaky sigh before reaching his free hand out to grab Lando’s, pulling him close to for comfort.
Daniel swears the look on Lando’s face might actually make his heart swell out of his chest.

you know what i call that?
((::or in this case lando and oscar are too scared to confess their feelings so they do it in their thoughts looking at each other from across the club and charles leclerc is an instigating bitch::))

i can’t even look in his direction, it’s giving me a migraine
lando was internalizing again, he had this horrid habit of simply letting things simmer, but in the strobe and colour of the monaco club that he had found himself in, he couldn’t take his eyes off the one boy who looked perfect in every scenario. sure he was at least fifteen or so feet away, dancing incredibly close to alex and george and watching him made lando spiral even further. he had this rhythm, this flow, that worked so perfectly as he rolled his body against the two, hands in the air and smile plastered across his face. lando desperately prayed that he could tear his gaze away and for gods sake STOP staring at the part of him where his shirt would ride up slightly exposing his pale skin when he stretched out even a little bit. he sipped at his drink.
just try ignore him, you’ve done a great job of distancing yourself, just keep it together lando, keep it together…but damn does that boy have some fine abs and a lovely smile and small moles that could be traced like constellations across his skin. he’s perfect.
lando huffed and stood up, tossing the rest of his drink back and deciding that he wasn’t drunk enough yet. he was too conscious to actually listen to the thoughts in his head at the moment and needed to just stop feeling for even five measly minutes. he approached the bar where charles was throwing back two shots and ordered one for himself as well.
“jesus charles, end of the world coming?”
“ah! lando! it’s summer break, i am drunk, here a shot mon ami, drink!”
lando found himself with two shots of who knows what top shelf liquor in front of him, contemplating his choices. he didn’t want to be too badly incapacitated, he wasn’t sure how he would get home after this and should probably formulate a plan before getting incredibly fucked up. charles noticed his apprehension and pat him on the back.
“lando what troubles you?” charles asked, the brit huffed.
“oscar fucking piastri actually.”
“pardon? oscar? he’s like the nicest person i have ever met, what has he done?”
“nothing, nothing intentionally that is, he just-“
“oh my god you like him!” charles cut him off, lando gripped his hand firmly around the shot glass.
“shut up! don’t say it so loud charles!”
“over the music? mon ami, he’s not going to hear. why are you sitting here with me and not dance with him, you know you could be looking at him up close, no?”
“no i know, i just can’t be that close to him.”
he drives me crazy.
“but you like him. so be with him!”
“i can’t do that for several reasons, charles, it would fuck up our friendship, ruin our team dynamic, what if he doesn’t feel the same way, fucks sake i don’t know if he’s even gay!”
“you don’t know if he’s gay? oh lando please.”
“no, i’m sure an incredibly talented, well rounded, polite, smart young man like oscar isn’t gonna fancy his racing team mate.”
“well, i hate to freak you out or anything, but, he’s totally staring directly at us.”
shot.
———
stop STARING AT HIM OSCAR! you’re gonna freak him out or something look anywhere but at him.
oscar quite literally could not peel his eyes away from the older mclaren driver sat at the bar with charles leclerc, if he looked away, he feared it would be the last time he’d ever see him. even though stupid perfect lando and his stupid perfect hazel green eyes were constantly in the back of oscar’s mind, eating away at his thoughts and sanity. he had gone to dance with george and alex, hoping that it might take his mind off of lando and how he looked somewhat miserable at the bar. he soon realized that the two taller men were more invested in one another than they were with oscar who felt like he was alone in the club. almost everyone had a partner there with them or were dancing with some girl who sweet talked her way into the private room where the annual summer break kick off was happening. oscar noticed in that second that charles was smirking, not at lando but directly at him and this was enough for him to spin on his heel and hightail it for a booth. he sat alone, drinking, smelling some kind of substance that no one should have and thinking of lando fucking norris like it was a full time gig.
assume he’s not gay oscar. just assume he’s not gay so he can’t possibly even be into you. but do keep in mind that hot crochet button down he’s wearing would look much better on the floor.
oscar shuddered and tossed down more of his drink, standing up again to go get another when another body pressed itself against his. he turned to see charles who was still smirking and holding two shots. this can’t be good.
“oscarrrrrr piastrriiiiii, comment vas-tu?” he slurred as he set the shots down on the table, sliding one towards oscar whose face was paler and redder, knowing that the person who caught him staring was confronting him about it first hand.
“uh, great yeah, thanks charles, yourself?”
“very drunk, mon ami, very drunk, have you spoken to lando tonight?”
oscar felt even more pale and his cheeks were burning red. did charles know? how would he know?
just play it cool.
“no, erm, he seemed like he was pretty invested with you, so i just kind of gave him space, besides he’s probably annoyed of me because he’s constantly forced to be around me.”
that shot is looking like a mighty potent truth serum, mate, careful how you play this out. charles is on a mission.
“i wouldn’t say annoyed at all mon ami, in fact you should go talk to him.” charles is pushing the shot closer and smirking deeper, oscar wasn’t necessarily uncomfortable but couldn’t read what this could be about.
“i dunno charles, i don’t want to bother him.”
no i reckon you should mate.
shut up. oscar slides his fingers around the shot glass. whatever liquid is in it will either give him courage, or make him far dizzier and stupider than he already feels.
“what’s the harm? come on, i’ll take you over.”
“no! charles, i really have reservations about this mate. what if like, he doesn’t…”
“oscar. why would i have stumbled my sexy ass over here if i didn’t know for sure?”
“mate, i dunno, i really don’t think lando fancies me like that.”
“well then go hang out with your teammate, come, lets dance.”
before oscar even has time to think, he tosses the shot back, shaking his head at the fiery liquid and is pulled out of the booth. right as the dj plays smooth operator, carlos sainz from somewhere in the room shouts an angry fuck while laughter erupts around him. his vision is slightly blurred as he is pulled through the crowd, he sees george and alex entangled with one another, pierre and kika snogging and daniel, max, yuki and zhou egging on lance and logan who were shotgunning beers.
madness. this is utter chaos, what the fuck why are we literal children-lando!
lando is leaned against the bar, smiling at the shot gun race when oscar is pulled to his side. oscar looks down and away from lando, attempting to hide the red blush on his face and casually shoving his hands in his pockets.
“fancy seeing you here.” lando says over the music.
“yeah, fancy indeed.” oscar replies.
just talk to him, lando!
oscar, quite literally say anything!
god he looks so nervous.
god he’s so perfect, i can’t tell him, he won’t, what if he doesn’t I CAN’T MESS THINGS UP!
“sorry if i’m reading this wrong but, are you okay?” lando says, trying to look for oscar’s eyes which are anywhere but locked on his. oscar turns flashes a smile and looks down again.
“yeah, just, uh, it’s really loud in here and i think there was malicious intent towards carlos, you know, smooth operator.” oscar chuckles, glancing slightly more towards lando, “and i’ve had a lot to drink. a lot. i did shots with george and lewis earlier.”
you’re drunk oscar, good luck rest is on you mate.
DANCE WITH HIM!
lando leans himself against oscar a bit and links his pinky with the younger driver’s. oscar freezes at the touch, scared of letting himself melt into it. lando leans closer. every part of oscar is telling him this isn’t real and that he’s just super fucked up, he’s had a lot to drink and there was definitely weed somewhere in the room leaving a cloudy haze about them. oscar desperately wanted to let himself relax into lando’s touch, why was he struggling this badly even when intoxicated beyond consciousness, he was still anxious to his core about this being a mirage.
lando was barely in control of his own, maybe it was due to the amount of time he had spent internalizing his feelings for oscar and the general want to be near him that drove him, but maybe it was the fact that charles (even when piss drunk) had a keen sense of instinct, hell he had set up george and alex who had been pining after each other for years, maybe that was similar to what was happening here.
“you boys enjoy yourselves!” charles said as he waltzed away, smiling like an idiot and blowing a kiss back to them. the mclaren drivers laugh and for the first time that night, meet eye to eye.
“i assume he pumped you full of whatever liquor he gave me?” lando asked expectantly to a slightly swaying oscar. oscar nodded a bit rougher than he meant to, fuck he was drunk. “you alright, piastri? you would have a long fall to the floor if you fell.”
“just, hold me up then.” oscar breathed deep, “what did he tell you?”
“you were staring, oscar.”
“oh, i’m sorry, you’re just very gorgeous in the lighting and i like looking at pretty things.”
“what did charles tell you?”
“that you might fancy me, that you might not, i’m not great with words, sorry.”
“do you fancy me, oscar?”
oscar bit his lip, afraid of saying the wrong thing, but letting the liquid courage do the talking for him. he nodded his head instead, feeling very heavy. lando moved closer and placed a stabilizing hand on oscar’s slightly exposed hip, the aussie melted into the touch, gently placing a hand on lando’s shoulder. lando put his other hand on his other hip and pulled him closer. oscsr relaxed.
“oscar, i’ve felt the same way for a long while now. i just didn’t know how to tell you.” lando sighed, close enough that he could smell oscar’s cologne which was somewhere between palo santo and cedarwood as well as the faint hint of alcohol on his breath. oscar was locked on lando, holding onto his shoulders for stability and still nibbling on his bottom lip. he was sure his brain was processing this all wrong, or lando was just as drunk as he was and talking out of his ass, but the twinkle in lando’s eye had honesty and vulnerability written all over them, a safe space hidden behind the rough, stoic exterior of being an f1 driver. this was a side of lando that oscar had only seen a handful of times, a softer, yet wilder side of his personality which screamed him more than his media face. the aussie moved his hands from lando’s shoulders to his face and traded his lip bite for a smile.
“i’m gonna kiss you, lando.” oscar stated, leaning in and pressing his lips on lando’s. lando felt his heart leap out of his chest as he held oscar closer, letting the fact that all of his friends are watching them drift away with the only focus being how soft oscar’s lips were against his. there were a few cheeky whoops which in turn made lando stick up a middle finger and smile against oscar. as soon as they parted, fucking leclerc was there again, a shoulder on each man’s shoulder and smiling the most shit eating grin they’d ever seen.
“do you know what i call that boys? smoooooooth operatorrrrrrrr.”

Well that was a weird race.
Lewis clonked into Lando on the first corner, wrecks the McLaren’s race, then disappears in the race coverage until the checkered flag.
The Aston Martins were there but you never heard them mentioned or saw them.
Sainz, the instigator of today’s said Brit on Brit violence, disappeared after the first pit stop. Was his car shown again?
The race 9th-20th was great.
There was no single clear strategy. It was do what you want, feel the vibes.
I swear they black and white flagged Max just for something to do.
It was an interesting boring race.

With Charles recent story, I think it's time we talk about something that is a huge problem that many don't acknowledge or just that hasn't fully sunk in yet.
But with the behaviour of those disgusting fans, it is once again clear why Sebastian Vettel was right not to use social media until he retired.
The way in which F1 drivers not only can interact with fans but are also "marketed" is a huge contributer to this dismissing of boundaries.
Let me explain.
Lando for example for some of us was literally a twitch dude before an F1 driver. This is nothing against him doing that but it just shows how obscure the drivers have become in the public eye.
I first saw Lando when I got onto Twitch and now knowing what Twitch and streaming is like, I can not believe that he was allowed to do it because boundaries get so blurred there. The line between streamers and audience has become more and more obscure because most streamers either have very small communities where there definitely is a lot of knowing each other to some degree or they are so big but have established themselves that there is a kind of line thar can be pushed. Many streamers will have fans make out of line comments, make inappropriate statements etc. That is because quiet a few streams go off that energy, they use it for entertainment. They know how to play their audience. Lando has never received that because he never built an audience the way streamers did. And now, with Twitch having become so big and for people like me then not knowing that Lando was actual a professional athelet, it is assumed that this kind of energy might also be there for him. Add onto that the fact that there is now a new form of journalism where even non-professionals can push to ask questions about racing and you get absolute fucking chaos because it's kind of blurred between people just wanting to watch a dude stream and F1 fans especially younger ones flooding with race related questions.
And the worst instigator for this phenomenon is also without a doubt drive to survive. The way there are stories made up, fights and radios out of context, the way it is shoot like an actual TV Show to where some people genuinely question if this is about athletes or made up characters, this serious has made the problem far worse especially when they compleltly ignore drivers and want to make some drivers the bad guys when in actuality, there is no fucking bad guys. This is a sport, not a novel.
Sure, there's different kinds of drivers but there's no such thing as a bad guy because this is a real actual sport.
These are actual multifacted people that, believe it or not, can all be assholes from time to time and all will be ugly at some point when it comes to achieving the championship.
But the Netflix has made this straight up fictional perspective of real people, compeltly influences newer fans perception.
The amount of times I have heard new fans surprised that Lance isn't actual dead last every race or Max isn't the devil in person, is genuinely mind blowing.
This warped perception added together with access to social media complelty forges a picture to younger fans.
I don't excuse their behavior but sometimes I admit that it can be hard to realise that this parasonical relationship is compeltly one sided and that actually, you don't know them at all and your entire perception might be based an made up information.
It's the same shit people had to realise when some YouTuber fan bases got out of hand.
Except that it should never be this way because these are athletes. These aren't people who put out content for entertainment, these are actual racing drivers fighting for a world championship.
But, with the way they are marketed and with the way F1 is marketing itself more as a spectacle than an actual racing competition, it's hard to see that especially when you are younger and only just discovering F1.
There's no excuse for the behavior but there is a reason, an underlying problem that needs solving before we get to the point that some YouTuber fandoms escalated to.
There's an issue that won't be addressed because F1 is straining further from a sport and drifting more towards an entertainment show like WWE or just straight up fictional stories.

A little game, pre season (you obviously don't have to do it, I just thought it could be fun):
1. Who of the rookies are you most exited for?
2. Which team do you think will have the most intern fights/battles?
3. Who do you think will dnf first?
4. Who do you think will have the most dnfs?
5. Do you think someone will have his maiden win? If yes, who?
6. Do you think we will get a reserve driver step in? If yes, who do you think it could be?
7. Who do you think will win the first GP?
8. Do you think Pierre will get a penalty point in the first race and has to sit out the second race?
9. Do you think Max will get his third world championship or is it someone else?
10. Do you think someone will retire after this season? If yes who?
11. What is your wildest prediction for the season?
Send this to some friends and mutuals to see what they think
I completely and utterly forgot about this so I won't worry about passing it on to anyone.
1. Who of the rookies are you most exited for?
Oscar Piastri 100%. He's an aussie and he did well in the feeder series. I'm keen to see how he does.
2. Which team do you think will have the most intern fights/battles?
I think it will be either Alpine or AM. (Guess we were going to find out who was the bugger instigator at Alpine last year)
3. Who do you think will dnf first?
I'm not sure who, but I do think it will be a Ferrari engine to pack it in for the first mechanical DNF.
4. Who do you think will have the most dnfs?
I think as a team it'll be either AR or Alpine
5. Do you think someone will have his maiden win? If yes, who?
I think it will be Lando's turn (assuming the MCL60 isn't a wheely bin of a car all year)
6. Do you think we will get a reserve driver step in? If yes, who do you think it could be?
I think yes we will. Who it will be though I'm not sure. Depending on how long it takes Lance to heal though it might just be Filipe (which I'd be keen to see)
7. Who do you think will win the first GP?
I think it'll be Charles. He's good on that track.
8. Do you think Pierre will get a penalty point in the first race and has to sit out the second race?
I think there's a very high chance. If what he does is able to be contested at all though I think Alpine will fight hard against it.
9. Do you think Max will get his third world championship or is it someone else?
I think there's a very high chance of it going to Max again. I'd say we will have a pretty good idea by race 5 or 6.
10. Do you think someone will retire after this season? If yes who?
I don't think it will happen.
11. What is your wildest prediction for the season?
I think the AM will see a surprising jump in performance. Like bringing them to where Alpine/McLaren were last year.

So it’s been 13 hours since I got this. I’ve gone to sleep; I’ve woken up, taken a shower and had breakfast, all while thinking about wtf this even is.
I was just gonna let this die a painful death like I’ve been doing with these absurd and painfully unhinged messages I’ve been getting for the past two days (alongside other pro-Lando blogs), but I think this one needs to see the light of day.
There are a couple of questions that I have, and I know I won’t get an answer, but I’m still gonna try.
1. What in the hell is this? How does your brain work for you to even go into a place like this? I always try to be the bigger person, to never instigate unless I’m being poked and provoked, but what in the ever-loving fuck do some of you people think you’re accomplishing by sending shit like this?
2. What is this all about? This can’t be about us being fans of someone who drives a piece of trash in zoomity semi-circles. Nothing about any of this can be about Lando or us, cause this absolute hateful rhetoric isn’t about anyone but you - the person who sends it. You seem to lack some traits and values, be it empathy, self-control, communication, compassion, responsibility or maturity.
3. How can you justify the impact your words will have on people? What goes through your mind when you decide to send this to someone, and do you not care at all about the effects and repercussions it can have? I am not the strongest mentally, and I’ve talked about my own suicide attempt before (granted on my old blog). Does that make me more of a prime target for this kind of message? Is that what goes through people’s heads before they send this? Are you hoping that I get so upset that I will try it again? I’m sorry to say, but I’ve come a long ass way, and I’m not letting some pathetic person hiding behind anonymity have any effect on me. But that’s not to say someone else who got this message will see it the same way. I truly hope you didn’t mass produce this one like you’ve been doing with the other asks.
4. Why do people feel entitled to demean and threaten others just because they like someone different to you? Why do you feel some people, famous or not, are deserving of this kind of treatment? Why do you need to diminish another’s star to uplift someone else? The fact that you think this is acceptable behaviour is such a damning indictment of the way social media has evolved, but in the end, it’s you; it’s all about you and the fact that you are the only person who can control your actions. You are the only one to blame for the way you behave, not Lando Norris, and for sure not the people who support him.
5. I don’t know which driver it is that you have a parasocial relationship with, and frankly, I don’t care. I’m sick of the “do better, be better” mantra because I truly think there are people on this app who are the best versions they can ever be and those versions both a) send these kinds of messages or b) blatantly wish for the death of drivers with their whole ass blog on display. So no, I don’t think you can do better but what you can do is abscond the fuck out of there, leave and go to Twitter, where people like you prosper and are welcomed. Go be the absolutely worst version of yourself; just leave us the fuck out of it.

rowan todd okay, that's my boyfriend nat.
natalia ruiz you cannot be publicly defending a man who makes 🐶 jokes or calls himself tripod

TROS Review - after second viewing
I’m glad I knew all the spoilers going into my first viewing. If I hadn’t known Ben died, I would’ve screamed. Although I’m pretty sure I heard someone at my second viewing go “What?!” when he fell over and vanished into the Force.
OK, let’s break this down.
THE GOOD
The movie looks great.
Daisy, Adam and John Williams all FUCKING brought it for this movie.
I actually liked some of the fan-service-y bits like Wedge getting a cameo, Han having a memory chat with Kylo/Ben, and Luke motivating Rey. I also noticed on the second go-around that Kylo flies an old Imperial TIE fighter (one from the Death Star ruins) to Exegol. And I like that shot of the old X-Wing of the Rebellion and the old TIE fighter of the Empire there alongside each other.
Most of all, I loved ALL the Reylo scenes we got in this movie. About 70 percent of the runtime seems to be dedicated to Rey, Kylo/Ben or both. I mean, it’s basically Reylo: The Movie, and I’m totally here for it. (But more on that below.)
I actually liked seeing Kylo in the mask again. I think it makes him look... sexy? Idk what I feel, y’all.
Some of the new creatures and characters were cool, even if we didn’t spend much time with them. (Again, more on that below.)
Loved Leia’s moments and how she had a big part to play in the story even if Carrie is gone. 😢
Those are all the big things; there might be a few small things that I’d remember if I were watching the movie in real time, but I can’t remember them now.
So, let’s get into it:
THE BAD
Oh, boy where do I start?
The pacing in both the very beginning (first 20-30 minutes?) and the very end (last 10) was ridiculous. My dad even agreed that the beginning felt rushed and disjointed.
While I love Kylo/Ben and Rey, the movie spends so much time focusing on them that no one else really gets an arc. Say what you will about TLJ, but Finn and Poe both had arcs in that movie, even if they were small. I felt like Poe did in this movie what he did in that last one: took to heart the words of wisdom of others around him (or at least, regurgitate their lines). He did it with Leia and Holdo in TLJ, and he did it with Zorri and Lando in this one. Finn doesn’t get any arc in this and the fact that he’s supposed to be Force-sensitive is like ... ??? What? I don’t even have time to unpack all that.
Also, Rose and Hux were sidelined majorly. I don’t even like Hux but even I felt his character and end were poorly done in this movie.
Something about both Finn and Rey’s Force abilities that bugged me was that I thought all Force sensitives can intuit or understand what others are saying in any alien/droid language. Remember how Rey could understand Chewie when she first met him but Finn couldn’t? It makes sense why Rey could understand a droid like BB-8 but why a Wookiee? Are there a lot of Wookiees on Jakku? No, she could understand him bc she’s Force sensitive and it’s an ability she has. But, in this one, neither she nor Finn could understand Babu Frick. I know it’s a small detail, and I could be misremembering canon, but it just bugged me both times.
So, Rey being a Palpatine... makes no sense. How and when did Palpatine have a kid? Was Rey’s dad a cloning experiment, or a naturally conceived and born child? This is something I’m morbidly curious about. I liked it better in TLJ when we thought she was no one, and this seems like a GIANT retcon and slap in the face to Rian Johnson. They even had to write a line about how Kylo supposedly never lied to her. Part of me wonders whether the Emperor was lying??? Maybe making Rey think she was his granddaughter would trick her into being obligated to come and end his life herself? But then, why was that Jedi Hunter looking for her parents? Oh well. Anyway, I did want her to be Rey of Jakku and no one else. But I also appreciate the thematic parallels and the yin/yang thing going with her and Kylo/Ben. He’s the embodiment of the Dark Side even though he’s descended from the Light, and Rey is the embodiment of the Light Side even though she’s descended from the Dark. So I’m a bit conflicted, but I hate it more than I love it.
I also HATE that Ben died. BUT, at least he didn’t die from falling into the pit, and at least there’s still a possibility that he’s coming back. The worst of it is that after he disappears, he’s never addressed again at all. Wouldn’t Poe or Finn ask about him? They don’t necessarily know he’s dead, and he would be a major threat if he were still alive. And why wasn’t he a Force-Ghost at the end? I HOPE it’s bc they’re leaving it open for him to come back. Or maybe his energy is living on in Rey whether spiritually (the dyad thing) or physically (maybe pregnant???).
But here’s the deal: in some ways this movie felt like the series finale of beloved TV show. All your favorites come back for little cameos, your main characters go out on a high note, and everything is resolved to a greater extent. Sure, there are more stories to tell, probably, but the Main Conflict has now been resolved. Think Avatar: The Last Airbender TV show or Star Trek: Voyager as examples.
BUT, in other ways, it DOESN’T feel like a finale. It feels like they’ve left doors to open and questions to explore in future properties. Is Finn Force-Sensitive? Is Jannah Lando’s relative? Is Ben Solo really dead? What’s gonna happen to Rey? Etc.
So, the movie needed to pick a lane. Either be The End of an era, or not. You can’t wrap up a story but then tease us with more stories. That’s not how this works. Fuck, even Harry Potter — as much as everyone hates JKR — got this right. Big Bad Guy is dead and instigating conflict is now resolved. Palpatine was the one who started this whole thing, so now that he’s dead, all is well???
Well, here’s my other big complaint about the movie. JJ & Co don’t seem to know how the Force works.
The Force is about a balance between the Light and the Dark. When one side becomes too strong, the other side grows stronger to compensate. When one side wipes out the other, the other responds. There must always be balance. Snoke even pointed this out in TLJ that Rey was Kylo’s Equal in the Light bc he was growing stronger.
And the Sith and the Jedi are religions on their respective sides. Not all Dark side users are Sith; not all Light side users are Jedi. And there are some Force users who use both freely and some who stay in balance.
The Mortis arc of TCW demonstrates this very well.
This is why so many people were pissed that Ben died. Not only are you losing a great character but you’re also losing the potential of what Ben and Rey could’ve been together as Force-users.
Palpatine and all the Sith are dead. Luke, Leia and all the Jedi are dead.
Except for Rey, who is descended of the Sith but trained by Jedi. So, she (and Ben) would have to figure out exactly how to keep the Force in balance. If the last Jedi just destroyed the last Sith, then the Dark Side is going to have to respond. But, if Rey could find other Force-users and teach them how to be in balance and use both Light and Dark in harmony then balance could be restored. There would be no need for these extremes if everyone stays in the middle.
This means Rey would have to end the Jedi. Which is what Luke wanted in the last movie. But then we find out that Leia received Jedi training??? So was Leia a Jedi? Is Rey? I’m so confused.
I like the fact that Rey’s saber has a darker hilt but it’s a yellow/orange blade. It kinda hints that maybe she will stay in balance — using both light and dark, being neither Sith nor Jedi, but something in between — a Skywalker, if you will.
So I guess, that’s a tiny win. The theory that the Skywalker(s) could be a new religion of Force-users in balance with the Force could still happen after that scene of Rey on Tatooine.
But, still, I hate all these retcons and the idea that the Jedi are the end-all, be-all. The Sith definitely aren’t good; but the Jedi weren’t always great either. And I hate that Rey had to fight Palpatine alone when it should’ve been her AND Ben — the balance between the Dark and Light should’ve been stronger than him, but whatever.
Also, one last thing, but why did Rey have BB-8 on Tatooine? Didn’t Poe make a big deal about Rey hurting BB-8 at the beginning? Why wasn’t BB-8 with Poe? Why wasn’t Chewie with Rey on the Falcon? (I guess he might’ve been and just never got off the ship.) Wouldn’t R2 and C3PO have been more appropriate in that final shot? They were in all 9 films. They’re more iconic and thematically appropriate than BB-8 to close out the saga, but oh well.
😪
TL;DR: I have really mixed feelings about this movie. At the end of both showings, I was smiling, so that’s something. I had fun... I think?? But yeah, it’s definitely bittersweet.

Luke shuffled around the little office tucked into the back of the club. After looking around the club, you'd decided it wasn't the type of club that raves and parties took place at, it was more like a bar where people who just wanted a drink or two would hang out with and didn't necessarily cater to the rowdy crowd.
"You're worried I can tell." Luke said, looking up from his desk where he'd pulled out a stack of pictures. You swallowed meekly. You remembered clearly how often Luke was around after Han left, helping Leia raise Ben during the shaky months afterward, the days Ben almost ran away, the days he'd climb through your window into your bed to cry on your shoulder with fresh scars on his arms and bruises on his knuckles from punching the wall.
"Of course I'm worried, aren't you?" You questioned Luke. He took another drink from his water bottle and shook his head with a grunt.
"Your nephew just started a fight in your club, beat somebody, and then got arrested, and you're not worried?" you asked incredulously. Luke looked at you with a quirked eyebrow as if begging you to continue your rant.
Instead, you sighed and put your head in your hands. This was all your fault, if you hadn't agreed to come to the show with Ben then Hux never would have showed up and Ben wouldn't be sitting in jail.
"He's been arrested before." Luke said, very matter of fact, while looking through the stack of pictures. He plucked one out and handed it to you. The picture showed a 13-year-old Ben, dressed in a black hoodie and jeans sitting in a holding cell in the police station pouting while someone took the picture of him.
"Took that the last time he got arrested for picking a fight. He beat them up too, had a good reason though." Luke said. You tilted your head, why had he taken a picture of Ben instead of helping him?
"Don't worry, he just got fined, Leia and I paid it, then grounded him for a month and made him work off the fine. And he didn't kill anybody this time so worst case he gets a fine, maybe a night in jail, and he's done." Luke explained. That did make sense, it was in self-defense, Ben hadn't thrown the first punch. You looked up to see Luke fiddling with his computer and a USB stick, when you realized what he was doing. Luke had hidden cameras all around the club, and he was pulling the footage from them.
"C'mon, you'll need to tell them what happened down at the police station." Luke said, heading out of the office and walking through the now empty club.
Tumblr media
"Ms. (y/l/n), what happened to provoke the fight?" The deputy asked as she sat down across from you. She was petite, with curly black hair that stopped just above her shoulder.
"Well, Armi-, Hux, he climbed onto the stage and started getting in Ben's face. Calling me names, threatening me, so Ben got between me and Hux and he put his hands up, then Hux charged him and someone pulled me out of the way and then everything is just," you paused and put your hand over your mouth as you remembered the thwack sound Ben's head made as it snapped back against the ground.
"Ok, hey, it's ok. You're not in trouble. Now, did Ben do anything to start the fight? Did he say anything?" The deputy asked. You thought back and shook your head, Ben hadn't said a word in response to Hux's taunts.
"No, he just put his hands up when Hux wouldn't back down. He was just trying to defend me." You responded.
"Ok, now why was Armitage upset?"
"I um, we broke up last week. He didn't take it well, he kept coming to my house, I've been staying with Ben and his mom the past few days." You explained. The deputy wrote down a few notes on her notepad as she nodded along, then looked up at you with a smile.
"Well, with what you've told us and the footage from Mr. Skywalker to corroborate, the assault and battery charges against Ben will be dropped. He was defending you and did nothing to instigate the fight." You felt the weight lifted off your shoulders.
"However, he will still be charged with resisting arrest. Since there was no harm to an officer it will be a misdemeanor charge and he'll only be charged with probation for three years and a fine of $400." She explained. You furrowed your eyebrows.
"Probation, in this case, just means that he can't get picked up for the same crime in the next two years or he'll be punished with jail time." The deputy explained. You nodded, pursing your lips.
"Well, that's all we needed you for, thank you Ms. (y/l/n), you can wait here, and we'll have Ben out in a minute." The deputy said, standing and offering her hand for you to shake. You took it and stood, turning when you heard a commotion coming from the back of the station where they had the holding cell.
"Hey, hey! you said the charges were dropped why are you still walking me out in cuffs?" You heard Ben snap. You heard the jangling of the chain on Ben's jeans as the cops bustled him from the back towards the doors of the station. You felt overwhelmed upon seeing him and rushed towards him.
"Ben!" You cried as you ran towards him and threw your arms around his neck, standing on your toes. He lowered his head and tucked it against your neck, letting out a deep sigh and relaxing himself against you. The officers finally let go of his arms and uncuffed him, allowing him to wrap his arms around your waist.
"god (y/n) you're ok, they dragged me away and I didn't know what happened to you and-" You cut Ben's rambling off by pushing your face against his neck. Ben sighed and pulled away from you, looking up to see Luke walking out of a separate office.
"No no, thank you chief. I promise you won't see him in here again, don't worry about him." Luke shut the door behind him and walked swiftly towards you and Ben, his cloak billowing behind him.
"Benjamin Lando Solo, I cannot believe you'd be involved in a fight in my place of business." Luke hissed as he reached up and grabbed Ben's ear, dragging him out the door. You could hear snickering from the officers behind you. You followed close behind as Ben winced and grimaced. He tripped over his feet as Luke dragged him out of the building and towards his old beat up car.
"I understand, that boy was a, a kriffing idiot, but getting in a fight? I thought your mother had raised you better." Luke said. Ben pulled himself away and straightened his shirt, stomping his foot against the ground.
"Luke, I get it I was stupid. But, if you knew, if you knew what he did, then you'd have done the same thing." Ben said, running his fingers over the purple bruises forming on his knuckles. Luke's stance softened as he watched how Ben shuffled his feet against the blacktop.
Tumblr media
"(y/n) what's wrong?" Ben asked when he saw you sitting by yourself tucked in a corner of the hallway while everybody else was at lunch.
"Nothing." You said, wiping your face with the sleeve of Ben's blue jacket you'd stolen a few days ago. You sniffled and pulled your knees up closer as Ben sat down on the ground and shuffled towards you.
"(y/n) somethings wrong, please tell me what it is?" Ben asked. You shoved your face against the purple sleeve and sniffled again.
Ben sighed and said nothing, just held his arms out to you. You leaned against him and shoved your face against his chest as you continued sniffling and more tears leaked from your eyes. Ben held you and rubbed your back as you reached up and ran your hands through his jaw length curly hair.
"(y/n) I'm your best friend, please tell me what's wrong because I want to help you." Ben said softly. You lifted your head and rested your chin on his shoulder. His black curly hair tickling your nose.
"Y'know Jason? The um, the kid in our math class?" Ben nodded along and rubbed your back, turning his head to look at you.
"You mean Jabba the Hutt?" Ben said. He was a little cruel with his nicknames, but it fit, Jason was easily the biggest kid in the 7th grade and was about 150 pounds overweight. Which is why it made it so easy for him to pick on you.
"He's just being an ass to me. Like stealing my stuff, pushing me in the hall, yeah." You muttered in his ears. He rested his nose against your forehead and hummed.
"And?"
"He called me a slut." You whispered, hoping he couldn't hear you.
"He what?" Ben snapped, lifting his head and looking at you with fury burning behind his whiskey-gold eyes.
"He called me a slut for hanging out with you so often." You said, quieter than before. Ben growled, low in his throat.
"I'll be right back." Ben said, pulling away from you and standing up.
True enough to his words, Ben came back a few minutes later with dried blood around his nose and a purple bruise forming under his left eye as he sat down next to you and flashed you a grin.
"Something tells me Jabba the Hutt won't be bothering you anymore." Ben said.
"Really? What tells you that."
"the three missing teeth I just knocked out of his head." Ben said with a sparkling crooked smile. You smiled back and wrapped your arms around his neck, pressing yourself against his chest.
Tumblr media
"Hey, I just wanted to say thank you. For, dealing with Hux." You said as you climbed into Ben's bed watching him get ready.
Ben shrugged and pulled his shirt off, stretching his shoulders and bending down to pick up the shirt he just dropped on the floor.
"No big deal. You're my best friend, aaand Hux is an ass." Ben said, undoing his belt and dropping his jeans and kicking them away from him, bending down once again to pick up the jeans before dropping them in his hamper and climbing into the bed. You pulled the blankets back as Ben climbed into the bed and switched the lamp off. You tossed the blankets back over Ben, making sure you still had enough for yourself. Ben rolled onto his side and pushed the blankets down to his hips.
"You really didn't have to fight him though." You said, scooting closer to Ben and running your hand down his bare back, gently scratching his back the way you knew he liked. He hummed and shuffled back towards you.
"Yeah I did. Payback for every bruise he left on you and every time he pushed you to your knees trying to get you to suck his dick." Ben growled. You gently pushed his shoulder to get him to roll onto his stomach. He complied, and you pushed yourself up, swinging one leg over his back and straddling him while you dug the heels of your hands into his shoulders. He let out a groan as you started rubbing his back. Ben sighed happily, and you looked down at his smiling face as you rubbed his shoulders.
Ben let out a deep breath and suddenly rolled over so he was facing you and you were straddling his hips. You looked down at him as he rested his hands on your hips, rubbing his thumbs over your skin. He took a breath, his lips slightly parted as he looked at your face.
"(y/n), I-" He paused, and you leaned down, resting your hands on his chest, looking into his eyes as you brushed your nose against his. He slid his hands from your hips to your back, one on your lower back and one between your shoulders and pulled you closer so your chests were pressed together. You moved your hands to tangle in his fluffy black hair, brushing your nose against his cheek.
"Ben, are we?" You muttered, your lips inches from his. He lowered his hand from your back down to the waistband of your panties, snapping it gently as he brushed his lips against yours. You shuffled your hips slightly, hearing Ben gasp and felt him harden against you.
You leaned forward and pressed your lips together and grinding your hips against Ben's. He hummed against your lips, pressing his hands against you and sliding one hand down to your butt, squeezing it softly. You moaned slightly and Ben took that opportunity to slide his tongue into your mouth. You felt his stubble scratching lightly at your face and you gently tugged at his hair, feeling a moan rumble through his chest. You slid your hand down between your bodies, resting it against his hardening dick, giving an experimental squeeze. Ben groaned and dropped his head back onto the pillow.
"(y/n), I need y-" Ben's words were interrupted by Leia knocking gently on the door. You felt your face flush as you pushed yourself off Ben and rolled on your side facing away from him to avoid the growing blush on your cheeks.
"Yeah mom, what is it?" Ben called. Leia pushed the door open.
"Oh, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to wake her, is she asleep?" Leia asked. Ben looked over to you and you stayed still, signaling for him to say you were sleeping. You couldn't face Leia after what she just almost walked in on. Thank god that woman believed in knocking.
"Angel and BB-8 were scratching at your door, I figured Angel wanted to sleep with (y/n), he's always slept with her anyway." Leia said. The two dogs trotted in the door and Angel bounded onto the bed, laying on top of you and huffing in your face. BB-8 settled himself at the foot of the bed as Leia shut the door quietly.
You couldn't believe you just almost had sex with your best friend.

The entertainment industry in America is imbued with racist ideology, and gaps in representation and wages between actors of color and white actors are reigning free. Black actors are sometimes more successful than their white counterparts, but even then they’re not being recognized or compensated in the same way. I observe this from a privileged lens as a white person, and though I have struggled economically and still do, I have the privilege that comes with whiteness. Here I will attempt to communicate some of what I see as disparities and racist ideologies in the American entertainment industry today.
I saw the most recent Star Wars movie “Solo” when it came out on Netflix. Alden Ehrenreich plays Han Solo, our lovable, orphaned, thief-but-for-the-right-reasons protagonist. He’s moving up through the ranks, stealing for the noble cause of one day being reunited with his adolescent crush Qi’ra (Emilia Clarke).  Donald Glover plays Lando Calrissian, the owner of the Millennium Falcon. His methods for acquisition of the Falcon are under constant scrutiny, and he is portrayed as the crook, with little back story. When white writers Jonathan and Lawrence Kasdan created this story, did they intend to cast Lando as a black man, or was it perhaps the casting agency who thought Glover would be good for this supporting role?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When Donald Glover was offered the job, he faced a choice. Did he want to be in the new Star Wars movie if he played a thief? There is a sacrifice made when an activist musician and comedian takes a high caliber role that potentially stereotypes him based on race. Certainly the circumstances are unique for each actor, but when a black entertainer is given an opportunity to succeed, but there is a wage gap between black and white entertainers, as well as male and female actors, and intersections of these different categories work like a confusing math problem that becomes easy to distill: there is disparity.
Sure, films like Black Panther are working against subjugation by taking black characters into the forefront of the picture, but what goes on behind the scenes is still inequity. It is generally stated that Chad Boseman who plays Black Panther earned $500,000 for his appearance in the film, and around 2-3 Million for Avengers, Infinity War. Robert Downey Jr. however, earned $500,000 for the first Iron Man, and earned a sickening $40-$50 Million for Infinity War. (QUORA.COM, 2019) (MENXP.COM, 2019)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Entertainers with more weight in the industry based on previous successes gain more creative independence and move up in the income ranks based on that success. But roles and incomes are limited for black actors in the mainstream, and when you see a black actor or hear a black musician, what parts of their blackness are being commodified and to what end can they be undervalued as artists when their bodies and voices are being harnessed to entertain?
According to Forbes, Black Panther grossed over 1.3 Billion Dollars, more than Titanic, one of the highest grossing films to date (Forbes, 2018), Whereas the first Iron Man grossed less than half that, close to 318 Million. (Box Office Mojo, 2019). There are some lurking variables affecting the difference in Boseman and Downy Jr.’s salaries in Infinity War, like that fact that Downey Jr. has appeared in more films than Boseman (IMBD, 2019), but the key factor in the wage gap here is clearly white privilege. This phenomenon is hard to name because acknowledging it opens up hundreds of years of dialogue on oppression and dispossession which is painful to talk about, but it is impossible to ignore if you want it to change.
Coincidentally, Donald Glover’s hit song This is America was co-written by Swedish computer Ludwig Göransson , who also wrote the score for Black Panther. Göransson  speaks to that experience in an interview with Complex.com last year:
“What I’ve been working with, and really trying to be aware of, is how you take traditional music from these different countries and put electronics and big orchestra on top of that while keeping the same sounds,” he said. “It’s been really challenging. I went to west Africa and South Africa for a month to do research and record a bunch of different musicians for the score. I brought that back to my studio and, for the past year, I’ve been figuring out ways to preserve the essence of that music and try to make it cinematic to fit this superhero universe.” (COMPLEX.COM, 2018)
So where are these nameless musicians from Africa credited in information on this blockbuster’s soundtrack? Nowhere that I could find. Were they paid anywhere close to what Göransson received as the Composer for the film?Do they receive royalties from their performances?
Michelle Alexander speaks to new manifestations of racism in her book The New Jim Crow, a book which according to a 2018 article in The New York Times is banned in prisons in North Carolina and Florida. (Bromwich, 2018)
“In the era of colorblindness, it is no longer socially permissible to use race, explicitly, as a justification for discrimination, exclusion, and social contempt. So, we don’t. Rather than reply on race, we use our criminal justice system to label people of color “criminals” and then engage in all the practices we supposedly left behind. Today is it perfectly legal to discriminate against criminals in nearly all the ways that it was once legal to discriminate against African Americans…we have not ended the racial caste in America; we have merely redesigned it.“ (Alexander, 2012)
And that’s exactly what is going on in the entertainment industry today. We are redesigning racism with wage gaps, divisions of screen time and biased survival in apocalyptic pictures (Infinity Wars,) and portraying black actors as thieves and sidekicks (Solo,) while black rappers in the mainstream sing about prison time, womanizing, gold chains, and street drugs, perpetuating these images to the public. In Lil Baby’s song Pure Cocaine, which is #24 on the Billboard rap charts as of April 5th, 2019, he says:
“When your wrist like this, you don't check the forecast/Every day it's gon' rain (every day it's gon' rain), yeah/Made a brick through a brick, I ain't whip up shit/This pure cocaine (this pure cocaine), yeah/From the streets, but I got a little sense/But I had to go coupe, no brain, coupe no brain/I ain't worried 'bout you, I'ma do what I do/And I do my thing, do my thing”
Chris Holmlund makes observations of the entertainment industry’s racist ideology flattening the Whoopi Goldberg into a tool for the white protagonists to connect in the movie Ghost in his book Impossible Bodies:
“Garishly dressed and made up, Oda Mae [the crook turned accessory to the white protagonist’s happiness, played by Goldberg] looks ridiculous when she visits Molly at Sam’s urging. “I don’t see what’s wrong with what I’m wearing,” she complains, voice off over a bird’s eye shot of Manhattan.
Tumblr media
The next shot shows her striding along, resplendent in a badly fitting rose-colored jacket, black flounced skirt, black stockings, white net gloves, bouffant black wig, and rakish hat. Her legs splay apart awkwardly above spike heels. In African leggings she later seems more at ease, but she never looks as deliciously fragile as Molly [Demi Moore] does in her pixie haircut, baggy sweaters, and spaghetti strap T-shirts.
No wonder, then, that Oda Mae lends her body to the dead Sam when he wants to hold and kiss his wife one last time. “O.K., O.K., you can use me,” she says, “You can use my body. Just do it quick before I change my mind.” Orlando at least submersed himself in her, before reemerging in ghostly superimposition to hear his wife’s response. Sam simply replaces her, obviating the lesbianism implicit in a first, teaser, closeup of Molly’s white hands held by Oda Mae’s black ones, by suddenly appearing in medium shot to wrap his strong arms protectively around his tremblingly eager widow’s torso.” (Holmlund, 2002)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This example from the 1990 film may show that movies have come some way in representation of black characters, but Lando’s role in connecting Han Solo with his love Qi’ra seems to follow a similar trajectory. Epigenesis is painful, and there are many steps back accompanying each step forward in how ideologies can be reshaped. In 2010 there was one such instance of painful steps backward which instigate change in the 15th annual broadcast of the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show, which aired on CBS. A summation of the event from The Color Complex by Kathy Russell-Cole, and Drs. Midge Wilson and Ronald Hall follows:
“Over 9 million viewers, the largest audience yet, tuned in to watch thirty-four female models, six of whom were women of color, parade around in lingerie and little else. The display of wares was organized around six differently themes sets, and in each, even the country-themes one featuring a barn and blond wigs, the subset of “girls” participating was racially integrated-with one notable exception. The single themed presentation in which the producers saw fit to showcase only the six models of color was the segment entitled “Wild Thing.” The setting was a jungle and the models entered wearing nothing more than African wraps on bodies covered in tribal body paint. From the African-American community could be heard a collective moan: “Seriously? Again, you put us back in the jungle?”
Tumblr media
Since before the Civil War, the dominant White culture has abused and manipulated images of African Americans, usually for the purposes of fear, humor (i.e. what Whites thought was amusing,) and marketing.” (Russel-Cole/Wilson/Hall, 2013)
Awareness of these disparities is the key to unwinding what large entertainment corporations are continuously feeding to the public. I encourage you to question the lyrics on the radio, and ask yourself who is writing them, who is singing them, and for what reason. Watch the behaviors of actors. What are they promoting? Mainstream media is engineered by corporations to succeed with awareness of what consumers will buy into. It’s your responsibility as the consumer to shape the reality of the entertainment industry, and equality on and off-screen.
