any and every tex mex restaraunt
the pearl district in san antonio
it doesnt matter what restaraunt, but alex DEFINITELY makes henry try chicken fried steak and/or chicken fried chicken. henry thinks alex is being dramatic bc he's waxing poetic abt how good it is and then he tries it and is like oh
WHATABURGER HE TAKES HIM TO WHATABURGER
jason's deli. the food is absolutely DISGUSTING but its all about the free soft serve ice cream you get, bro

Cranes Mill Park, ACoE, Canyon Lake, TX
The notice on my reservation made clear the campground’s 3 PM check-in time is strictly enforced. Therefore, we spent the day killing time by traveling through towns we might not typically have had a chance to see. Johnson City provided an RV parking space at their Lyndon B. Johnson boyhood home national park. And first we made lunch in the camper and then spent a leisurely two hours walking the grounds of this amazing historical treasure. Johnson’s paternal grandparents settled the land there and their story is so interesting. The old homestead of his grandparents remain in great shape, along with outbuildings, and Johnson’s boyhood home is available to tour. This stop was a surprise and is one of the highlights of this summer’s adventure, and if it weren’t for knowing ahead the strict check-in rules of Cranes Mill Park we most likely would not have stopped in Johnson City.
Cranes Mill Park itself was okay, nothing great or negative about it. And only thirty RV hookups are available, but that does not deter the occasional immature man who acts like one of the slacker roles Matthew McConaughy once played. This Dazed and Confused man drove around the lakeside bend and abruptly pulled straight into his campsite so his front door faced us. He had a small vintage trailer, which was cool, but every accomplishment of his set-up produced a swift one-clap of the hands by this strange man. He had a tall bistro-type umbrella he set up, with a table he attached to the side of his trailer, and two plastic Adirondack chairs. After every task accomplished he made a quick clap, and it was fascinating to watch a person so weird and enamored of himself. Shirtless, and playing something resembling a mix between rap and hip-hop, he also had a miniature motorcycle he kept in the bed of his truck that he could lift out by hand and take a spin around the park from time to time. Luckily for us he left the next morning.
We chose this park because of its proximity to Austin and San Antonio, as well as popular HIll Country towns such as Fredericksburg, Blanco, Luckenbach, and Wimberley, all of which we visited. The scenery was astounding, especially the drive between Luckenback to Wimberley and Wimberley to Canyon Lake. The weather sort of messed with us, but we hadn’t had a lot of rain to deal with on this trip so it was manageable. Wimberley was a nice surprise as well with its art-village appeal and Cypress Springs Preserve.
The restrooms were rustic and a combination of old and new. The shower stalls were large and provided plenty of hot water.
AT&T service was a satisfactory two bars. Our geezer price averaged $15 per night, which was a bit steeper than our usual fee and not indicative of any additional amenities than other ACoE parks we have stayed in, and basically over-priced in our opinion. Yes, there were enough safe roads in which to ride our bicycles, but with generally no trees it wasn’t so much fun in the direct sun. No nature trails in the park itself to hike, but day trips can provide anything a camper like us might need for a satisfactory experience. This park is truly a boater’s paradise, and not a good choice for those of us who prefer a bit of shade, wooded topography, and a bike ride through the countryside.
Much to our dismay we did arrive to our check-in about ten minutes early. However, we parked outside the gate and I approached the gate window on foot. I presented myself as humble, and apologized for being early. The camp hosts were friendly and forgiving, and also expressed their pleasure that we had obviously gone to some trouble in order to follow their rules. Happily, check-in was quick and easy.

He is now engaged in filling his contract for the erection of the State Reform School at Laurel Station, seven miles out on the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad. Mr. Ready has been established for ten years here, and before that had yards about seven miles up the canal.

He has been very successful in his business, and is the owner of valuable real estate both in Manchester and Richmond, his home, 1111 Grove avenue, Richmond, a modern brick structure, and one of the finest in the city, included. [RVCJ93]
June 2019 — looking towards Riverside Brick & Supply at Twelfth & Maury Streets
There is no clear identification where Ready’s brickyard stood, but according to the 1911 Bulletins of the United States Geological Survey there were four brickyards are in operation in Manchester, are all in the vicinity of Knight and Maury streets, including W. J. Ready’s. [USGS]
Indeed, the area seems to have been popular for this occupation for some time. The 1877 Beers maps depict a brickyard in this same area, and Riverside Brick & Supply is still in operation today at Twelfth & Maury. According to their website, their business dates back to 1871. The 1877-78 edition of Chataigne & Gillis’s Virginia Business Directory and Gazetteer for Manchester even lists a Brick Works associated with an M. J. Ready. Probably no coincidence there. [OME]
[RVCJ93] — looking towards 1109-1111 Grove Avenue, circa 1893
Business for the brick-maker must have been good since he settled himself in a modest three-story behemoth on Grove Avenue.
Although the Colonial Revival continued to dominate the selection of house styles found in the Fan Area during the first two decades of the 20th century, modern styles associated with the Arts and Crafts Movement began to appear especially on undeveloped side streets and on the westernmost blocks of principal streets.
(Library of Congress) — Sanborn Fire Insurance Map from Richmond (1905) — Plate 60
As early as 1909. Richmond builder, W. J. Ready, had erected a dwelling that was vernacular in spirit but based on the American Foursquare at 2413 Kensington Avenue. [TFAHD]
Despite the fact that the City of Richmond believes that Ready’s modern brick crib was built in 1910, the publication of its picture in Richmond, Virginia: The City on the James in 1893 makes the case that it is actually much older.
June 2019 — looking toward the now-vanished 1109 Grove Avenue
The building started life as a two-house row, the easternmost of which no longer exists. The Fan went through interesting times in the 60s and 70s, so there’s no telling what state 1109 may have been in at the time it was pulled down. One hopes that it was not entirely for the purpose of building a driveway, the bones of which are all that is left to us.
June 2019 — detail of windows on the turret & facade
Tucked away in a crowded section of the lower Fan, far away from better-known houses on Franklin, W. J. Ready House is easy to overlook. But unless you’re talking about one of the Fan’s more over-the-top entries, like the Branch House, this Italianate beauty can hold its own with any other in the neighborhood.

By the Dim and Flaring Lamps: Part Four, Chapter Three
Part One: One | Two | Three | Four Part Two: One | Two | Three | Four | Five Part Three: One | Two | Three | Four | Five | Six Part Four: One | Two
DECEMBER 1863
CULPEPER. VIRGINIA
Convalescence, Scully soon discovers, is infinitely easier to bear when Mulder remains by her side.
It's not that Melissa hadn't tried to keep her occupied; on the contrary, her older sister had done her best to take Scully's mind off of her forced inactivity. But Melissa's idea of a riveting conversation is quite different from Scully's, and as a result, Scully had found herself tuning out of more than a few never-ending descriptions of the most minute goings-on in New York City, the ever-changing fashions, and the many, many Spiritualist gatherings that Melissa has attended.
Mulder, by contrast, takes down his favorite philosophical volumes from his personal library and debates them, point by point, with Scully, their good-natured arguments often increasing in volume and intensity to the point where Melissa, convinced that her sister will do herself further harm if allowed to continue, frequently intervenes to quiet them down.
They play poker, which Missy relishes, knowing that their mother would never approve, and she beats both Mulder and Scully soundly nearly every time.
"I get a good deal of practice in New York," she tells them. "It's not as though my friends and I have a lot of money to go out and do things, so we spend a lot of time playing cards."
As Christmas approaches, it becomes clear that Scully, who is now able to spend most of the day out of bed (though she's frequently exhausted by supper) is well past the point of relapsing. Melissa decides that it's time for her to go.
"Are you sure, Missy?" asks Scully worriedly, when Melissa announces her intentions to her while Mulder is out walking the grounds with James. "Why don't you at least stay here through Christmas?"
"Actually, I was thinking that maybe I could go back home for Christmas," Melissa confesses. "Father is at sea, and so are Bill and Charlie, and you're here... so Mother will be all alone, otherwise. I hate to think of her there by herself, worrying about all of us. At least if I go, she'll have one of her children there with her." Scully has to admit, as much as she'll miss her sister, she has an excellent point.
"You're probably right," she concedes. "And it's not as though I'll be alone here, so you don't need to worry about me." Missy grins.
"Well, I don't have to worry about you being lonely, at any rate," she says. "But I can think of a number of other possible causes for concern... or at least our parents would find them concerning."
"Melissa," sighs Scully, "nothing of note is going to happen." Her sister looks scandalized.
"If that's the truth, Dana," she says, "if you're going to be alone in a house with a handsome man who's hopelessly in love with you, and you're not going to take advantage of the situation...." She shakes her head mournfully. "Then you really are beyond hope."
Mulder takes Melissa to the nearest operation train station in a phaeton after lunch and returns just as the sun is setting. Scully, waiting at the window in Samantha's room, sees him approach and feels a flutter of nervousness in her stomach.
It's never been just the two of them, not really. Not at the camp, certainly, and not even at Charles Spender's house in Fredericksburg, when she had left before staying even one night in his bedroom with him. Since his arrival here at the plantation, he's barely left her side, it's true, but neither has Melissa. Now, however, they're facing days, possibly weeks, alone together, with nothing to do and nowhere to go, no soldiers milling around them, no parents or sisters or assumed fiancees to chaperone them, to eye them closely to make certain that they've left a respectable amount of space between them.
Scully has been pacing Samantha's bedroom the entire time that Mulder has been gone, and she's embarrassed by how much it's tired her out. She sits on the edge of the bed, listening for the sound of footsteps on the landing outside.
Her hands are trembling. Why are her hands trembling? This is Mulder, for God's sake.
She breathes deeply, gaining gradual mastery over herself. The gunshot wound in her abdomen twinges at the tension in her diaphragm, reminding her that she's not, after all, capable of doing all that much, particularly not tonight, when she's already so tired.
Quiet footsteps outside in the hallway claim her attention, and she turns just in time to see Mulder opening the door and slipping inside, closing it behind him. She gives him a shaky smile.
"Melissa got off all right?" she asks, and he nods.
"She asked me to tell you, again, that she loves you," he says. "And she asked me to promise to take the best care of you possible, and not to...." His voice trails off and his face grows red. "Not to let the opportunity of our current living situation pass us by." Scully stares at him a moment longer; then, suddenly, she bursts into laughter. What a perfectly Melissa thing to say. Not "Be careful," or "Rest up and heal." Mulder smiles sheepishly at her.
"Like I said," chuckles Scully, shaking her head in amusement, "she's never been very big on tact." Mulder laughs along with her, crossing the room to sit next to her on the bed. He takes her hand in his, still smiling, and just like that, Scully's nervousness dissipates. This is still Mulder, still the man she trusts, still someone she knows would never put any pressure on her to do something with which she felt uncomfortable or afraid.
"James is preparing a small supper for us," says Mulder. "He'll bring it up when it's ready, and then...." He looks sheepish again. "Well, if it's all right with you, I'd like to try and get some rest. It was a long ride to and from the train station." Scully nods.
"As much as I hate to admit it, waiting for you was tiring enough," she tells him. "I'm looking forward to a good night's sleep."
Food is brought up in short order, chicken and vegetables for Mulder and soup and fresh bread for Scully, who is still not up to eating anything particularly heavy. They eat in the armchairs in front of the fire, and when they've finished, Mulder carries their trays back downstairs to the kitchen. He returns looking embarrassed.
"James very pointedly informed me that there are clean sheets on the bed in my room, down the hall," he says, and Scully's good mood wavers. "But I told him that I would rather keep an eye on you and be close by, in case you need anything during the night." He looks anxious. "But I can sleep in my own room, if you'd rather be alone tonight. I know we’ve probably been crowding you, your sister and I." Scully shakes her head.
"I like your idea better," she says softly, and his face melts into a gentle smile. "Go on and get ready for bed. There's more than enough room in here for you." Mulder's smile broadens.
"You're sure?" he asks. In answer, Scully folds down the covers and climbs into the bed, moving all the way over to the far side so that there's a space for Mulder. His smile blooms into a full-on grin, and he stands, pulling off his boots, socks, and jacket in short order... but then, he pauses. "I should go and get a nightshirt from my bedroom," he says. "It would be much more comfortable than sleeping in my uniform." Scully nods in agreement.
"If it's not too much trouble, I could use a fresh nightshirt as well," says Scully. "If you've got one available."
"Of course," says Mulder, disappearing down the hall for a moment. He returns with two crisp, clean, white nightshirts and tosses one to her as he twists out of his suspenders and begins to divest himself of his clothing. Scully watches with interest as more and more of his lean, rangy body is revealed to her, more than she's seen of him yet. She closely studies his strong shoulders, his ropy arms, his narrow hips and muscled abdomen, biting her lip almost unconsciously.
As though he can feel her gaze on him, Mulder stops suddenly and looks up, locking eyes with Scully. The tension in the room ratchets up sharply, and Scully is suddenly left unable to catch her breath. After a moment, Mulder smiles mischievously.
"Doesn't seem fair," he comments. "I'm decidedly more exposed than you are, I would say." Scully returns his smile... and then, before she can talk herself out of it, she sits up in bed and pulls the old nightshirt over her head, leaving herself completely naked. There's a moment of terror on her part- she's relatively certain that no one has seen this much of her since she had learned to dress herself at the age of three- but it's worth it for the look of total and utter reverence on Mulder's face. He's frozen in the act of removing his underwear, both clean nightshirts lying forgotten on the armchair next to him.
"Scully," he breathes, his voice full of awe... and then words seem to fail him. His eyes rake over her in a way that would likely make her uncomfortable, were he anyone else. "You're beautiful, Scully," he says softly, and she feels her face flush with pleasure.
"Thank you," she whispers. His gaze is too intense, and at last, she feels the need to break it, looking down. She doesn't watch him as he removes his underwear and slides into his nightshirt; she looks up only when he sits at the edge of the bed and shyly holds out the other nightshirt to her. She takes it and slips it on as he climbs in beside her. He waits patiently for her to get comfortable before moving closer, and as she looks up at him, he tentatively holds his arms open.
"If I'm overstepping, just ignore me," he says, and the uncertainty in his voice pulls at her heartstrings. "But I've been dreaming of sleeping with you in my arms for so long, and I just thought-" Scully cuts him off by moving readily into his embrace, breathing deeply with pleasure as his arms close around her.
"I've been dreaming of it, too," she tells him honestly, glorying in the feel of his firm, warm body pressing against hers from head to toe. "For so long, Mulder. I didn't think I would ever have the opportunity."
"Well, you've got it now," Mulder murmurs, burrowing into her hair so that his mouth is up against the shell of her ear. "And the good news is that this doesn't have to stop when we return to camp."
"Mmmm," she agrees, snuggling closer. He smells of clean cotton, sweat, and a trace of the soap he had used to wash up, earlier that day. And under it all is a deep, masculine scent that she knows, were she not so exhausted, would make it next to impossible for her to keep from throwing herself at him in a way that, in any other circumstances, she would find terribly embarrassing.
As it stands, all that she's able to do is to curl her body as close to his as the laws of physics will allow as she drifts off to sleep.
When she wakes, the first thing she notices is how incredibly warm she is, the usual morning's chill not so much as a distant threat, even though the fire in the hearth has been allowed to burn down to cinders overnight. She's almost too warm, truth be told; her first instinct, on waking, is to throw back the heavy down-filled quilts to allow some cooler air to circulate.
What stops her is the foreign, yet delicious sensation at the back of her neck.
Mulder is kissing the exposed skin just beneath her hairline, nibbling at her the way one would sample a particularly sumptuous morsel of food, murmuring in apparent appreciation at the way that she tastes.
Scully is suffused in a rush of heat and excitement. She rolls in bed to face him, sliding an arm around his waist to pull him close, and their lips meet in a kiss that quickly grows heated beyond anything Scully has experienced before.
They've kissed, yes, and the feel and taste of him are not new, but somehow, kissing while lying down, pressed together head to foot, is an all together different experience from kissing while standing up. There's an increased sense of possibility, and with it comes the urge to do all that their circumstances are affording them... and for once, Scully is not at all inclined to second-guess, to list reasons for herself why this is not a good idea.
For once in her life, she doesn't care about the consequences.
Breaking just far enough away to regain the use of her arms, Scully reaches down and seizes the hem of her borrowed nightshirt, ripping the entire thing over her head and casting it aside. Mulder's eyes widen as he drinks in the sight of her, biting at his lower lip appreciatively as his gaze lingers at her breasts. He reaches out one hand tentatively, then brings it back to his side, glancing up shyly to meet her eyes.
"I want you to," she whispers to him, gratified to hear that her voice, at least, is steady, even if her heart is racing. She takes his hand in her own and places it atop her breast as she rolls to lie on her back, giving him full access to her body. His touch is gentle, hesitant at first, in sharp contrast to the naked hunger on his face.
"Mulder," she tells him, smiling indulgently, "you don't have to be quite so careful. You aren't going to break me." He looks up and meets her eyes, smiling sheepishly.
"Would you think any less of me if I told you that I was nervous?" he asks her, and she smiles warmly.
"What makes you think I'm not?" she responds. "I don't have any more experience with this than you do."
"So...." His fingertips trail along her ribcage, landing on her breast and working a spiraling path to her nipple. "Since you've never done this and I've never done this... how do we know what comes next?"
"I think...." Scully sucks in her breath at the sharp shock of sensation that flies through her as Mulder rolls her erect nipple between his fingers. "I think that we just... do whatever feels natural," she suggests. "Whatever feels right to us." Mulder nods, contemplating this, and smiling softly at her, he ducks his head to her breast and takes her nipple in his mouth. Scully arches her back, steadfastly ignoring her twinging musket wound, and forces more of her breast into Mulder's mouth. He slides his hands around the sides of her ribcage, holding her gently, but firmly in place as he samples first one, and then the other breast. Pleasure courses through Scully's body and she closes her eyes, running her fingers through Mulder's hair, breathing deeply as he explores her with his mouth. Moments later, he pauses and looks up at her.
"I, uh... I want to try something," he says. "You can stop me if you don't like it. But, you know, I hear a lot of things, listening to the men around camp... especially when they've been on leave, at home with their wives."
"Or when they've been visiting certain establishments," interjects Scully wryly. Mulder laughs.
"No doubt," he says. He bends to kiss the skin just under her breasts, running the tip of his pointed tongue along her sternum and onto the soft flesh of her belly. He lowers one hand to cup the jut of her hipbone, holding himself up with the other arm. "I'm not sure I'll be able to get this right, but I'd like to try it." His mouth continues its southerly course, skimming along by her navel, the bottom of her stomach, moving, moving....
Scully gasps and tries to sit up when she realizes what Mulder is doing, but her wounded abdomen is still not ready for such sudden movements, and she cries out in pain. Mulder looks up, alarmed.
"Lie back, Scully," he tells her. "It's all right."
"This doesn't seem like it's going to be very enjoyable for you, Mulder," she observes, settling herself carefully back against the pillows.
"We'll get to me in a minute," he replies, his voice slightly muffled by her skin and hair. "But I'm a gentleman, and a gentleman always sees to his lady first."
"That's not what I've heard, from what the men in the regiment say," Scully grumbles. "To hear them tell it, they- oh!" The rest of her words are lost as Mulder's mouth finds her, his lips and tongue caressing her and eliciting sensations she could never have imagined even existed. Her fingers clench reflexively, gripping at the bedsheets, and sounds she knows she's never made before in her life begin issuing forth from her mouth. It's several minutes before she's able to relax enough to begin to differentiate between the ways he's touching her, the way some things are more intense, and others, less so.
He hits a certain spot in such a way that she feels suffused in fire, and then moves on. "Wait!" she cries out, and he freezes. "What you were doing a moment ago...." He moves his tongue back up to her clitoris, and she shivers in delight. "Yes, that," she moans. "Keep doing that." Mulder readily obliges, and within minutes, Scully is gasping for breath and crying out incoherently as her entire body is overtaken by an orgasm of almost frightening intensity.
When her breathing is back under control, Mulder raises himself on his elbows and gazes up at her, a look of unmistakable smugness on his handsome face and a wet sheen on his chin.
"Pretty pleased with yourself, aren't you?" Scully pants, and his grin widens.
"Shouldn't I be?" he asks innocently. "If I'm to judge by your reaction, that was a job well done." She reaches out a hand, which he takes, and she tugs him up to hover over her, keeping some of his weight on his elbows.
"It was," she says, running her hands through his hair. "It most definitely was." She kisses him, tasting her own strange, peculiar flavor on his lips. It's not unpleasant; by contrast, it's arousing to feel the proof that he's done this for her, that all of this is actually happening. Unable to wait a moment longer to be truly joined with him, Scully begins to pull at his nightshirt.
"This needs to come off," she murmurs in between kisses, and Mulder hastily obliges, rising up on his knees to rip off the offending garment. As he casts his clothing to the floor, Scully rakes her eyes over his body, getting a truly good look at him for the first time. Her gaze catches on the impressive erection between his legs, and she swallows nervously. Mulder notices her expression immediately.
"Are you all right?" he asks. "If you're having second thoughts, Scully, we don't have to do this. I know I've been presumptuous, and I-"
"No, Mulder, I want to," Scully assures him. "It's just that, um...." She can feel her cheeks reddening as she glances down at his erect penis again. Mulder looks with her, then back at her, worried.
"What?" he asks. "Is there something wrong with it? Is it not normal?"
"No, that's not it at all!" Scully tells him. "I just... that is, I mean...." She looks up at him, hoping hard that she doesn't look as terrified as she's suddenly feeling. "Mulder, how in God's name is that going to fit?"
They're silent for a moment, staring at each other; then, at the same moment, they burst out laughing. Mulder collapses on top of her, catching himself on his elbows at the last second. He leans his forehead against hers as they try to calm down again. Scully feels her nervousness dissipating, and she lifts her head just enough to meet Mulder's waiting lips.
For a long moment, all they do is kiss, slowly, sweetly... until at last, Mulder reaches down between them almost casually, taking himself in hand and lowering his hips further down between her legs. Scully reaches down to help him, and after a moment of mutual fumbling and one or two false starts, Scully feels a slight pressure, a small sting... and then, increasing by degrees as he enters her, an amazing fullness, making her close her eyes and moan.
"Ohhhhh Scully," breathes Mulder, holding still and stroking her face tenderly. She runs her hands along his sides, settling them at his waist. He begins to stroke in and out of her, moving slowly, but Scully catches his hip, stopping him.
"Wait, Mulder," she says. "You have to- at the end, when you...." She mentally thanks Teena Mulder for whatever forward-thinking impulse had led her to keep On Moral Philosophy on her bookshelf. "When you orgasm, you can't do it inside of me." She smiles apologetically. "Not if we want me to keep fitting into my uniform for the rest of the war, anyway." Understanding dawns in Mulder's eyes, and he bends to kiss her forehead.
"Don't worry," he tells her. "I won't let anything happen to you, I promise." Scully reaches up and pulls his head down, kissing him soundly.
"I trust you," she whispers, and with that, Mulder begins to move again. He's still gentle, though Scully can see him straining to keep himself in check. She wishes that she could tell him to just let go, to go as hard and as fast as he wants, but even if this weren't her first time, the fact remains that she's still recovering from her injury, and something tells her that truly strenuous, energetic lovemaking would not make it onto Corporal Zuckerman's list of approved post-musket-wound activities.
They will, she supposes, simply have to save all of that for later.
Long before Scully has even managed to get used to the feel of having him inside of her, Mulder backs up slightly, just enough to pull out of her completely. His eyes roll into his head and his entire body stiffens, and suddenly, Scully feels a wet warmth on her belly. Mulder looks immediately apologetic, his cheeks flaming red with embarrassment.
"I suppose that I should be grateful that you don't have any prior experiences to compare my performance to," he says. "I'm sorry that was so fast, Scully. I think I can confidently say that I can only get better from here." Scully chuckles, caressing Mulder's sweaty back.
"I wasn't expecting hours of passionate lovemaking, Mulder," she reassures him. "Nor am I in any sort of shape for it. Not yet. Besides, you were a gentleman, remember?" She kisses his brow. "You saw to me first." Mulder is immediately cheered by this.
"That's true," he agrees. Kissing her quickly, he climbs out of the bed and retrieves a handkerchief from his uniform pocket, which he uses to clean off Scully's stomach before climbing back between the blankets and gathering her close to him. She revels in the feel of his skin against hers, in the pleasant lassitude of having shared something so wonderful. Drowsiness begins to overtake her immediately, and she can tell by Mulder's deep breathing that he's dozing off, as well.
Snuggling close to him, Scully closes her eyes and allows herself to drift off, held securely in Mulder's arms, surrounded by his scent.
She wakes, several hours later, to Samantha Mulder's horrified face.

Dear Anon,
I will not go further into this, but you know exactly what you did. But jokes on you, I’m into that shit! However, here you go! Washington and the topic of slavery. :) I just want to kindly point out in advance that today I'm going to be working on slavery in the general context with Washington. I won't explicitly address specific slaves, even though there were slaves who played a larger role in Washington's life (*cough* Billy Lee *cough* Ona Judge *cough*).
Washington was surrounded by slaves since his childhood, which essentially tells us that he grew up with them and did not even know or could not imagine a world without slaves. It was simply "normal" for him to have people owned by his family. He got his first slaves of his own when he was eleven years old, as an inheritance left for him by his father, along with the Ferry Farm and some land in Fredericksburg. He did not have much of these slaves, however, as his mother had claimed his inheritance for herself because George was not yet old enough to accept this inheritance. For this, the age of majority was necessary.
Then, after his brother Lawrence died of his tuberculosis, Washington inherited more slaves, along with acres and the promise that Mount Vernon would one day be his if Lawrence's wife and daughter died without an heir (which eventually happened).
Washington, as stated above, was accustomed to having slaves around at all times, and they were an essential part of his daily life. If only because Mount Vernon would not have run at all without the slaves. While Washington lived, he had made countless renovations to Mount Vernon. Renovations he never would have been able to do if he hadn't owned slaves. Sure, he could have hired and paid people, but Washington was pretty broke for much of his life (although you might not think so). That's why slaves took over that work, and Washington wasn't afraid to buy slaves who specialized in certain areas. Thus, during his lifetime, he had a full team of slaves, all of whom specialized in carpentry.
The biggest leap Washington made in slavery was when he married Martha. That marriage brought him 85 slaves, which doubled his labor force. And Washington needed all that manpower, too, because cultivating tobacco was very extensive and required a lot of people. Shortly after his marriage, the number of slaves at Mount Vernon continued to grow. In the first year after the wedding, Washington bought 13 slaves, then 42 more between 1761 and 1773. Slaveholders at that time also had to pay taxes on slaves older than twelve years old. Thus, we can be fairly certain that Washington personally owned 56 slaves in 1761, 62 slaves in 1762, 78 in 1765, and 87 in 1770. Washington did not buy any more slaves for a while after 1772, but due to many births, his number of slaves continued to increase. By the time he assumed his command of the Continental Army, he owned 135 slaves.
If Washington had never started growing tobacco and had relied on other crops from the beginning, he would never have been so dependent on slavery in his later life. Washington was not an individual case, however. Slavery was commonplace in Virginia at the time. Washington himself never called his slaves "slaves." Instead, he chose words like "Negroes," "servants," "my people," or "my family," which did not necessarily mean that Washington did not consider these people his property. He was even quite cold when it came to buying new slaves, for example, and had fixed ideas about what his slaves had to look like. His favorite were women because they could bear children, which naturally increased his number of slaves. Something that would later be his doom. Also, Washington accepted slaves from other farmers as payment if said farmers still owed him money. Or generally if one had debts, one should sell slaves to pay those debts.
Another point that makes clear that Washington did not consider slaves as human beings can be found in his diaries, where he often wrote down that he was alone at home all day, although he was surrounded by his slaves. It was normal for him and he believed in the "immortality" of slavery. Washington was convinced that if an attempt was made to abolish slavery, many Virginian farmers would be thrown into financial ruin.
But the fact that Washington considered his slaves "only" as his property did not mean that he did not care for his slaves. He cared for them, especially medically. There are records that he sent for doctors when his slaves were sick and even references that he took care of sick slaves. In addition, it is also known that during the Revolution, Washington saw to it that his slaves were inoculated against smallpox. Yet Washington did this not so much out of compassion, but rather for profit. Sick slaves could not work and thus did not bring him any money.
Another point that can be "credited" to him is his decision not to break up families or break up married slaves when he sold a slave. Marriages and unions among slaves were not legal under Virginian law, yet Washington respected these bonds and refused to break them apart. Also, slaves at Mount Vernon had the right to marry, in some cases even slaves from completely unrelated plantations, as long as they obtained permission from Washington. There is no record, though, that Washington ever refused such a request.
His scruples about slavery itself, however, grew up over many years. That and the already mentioned fact that Washington refused to break up families ensured a rapid growth in his slave population.
Slave families, nevertheless, could not always see each other. The reason for this was that Mount Vernon was not ONE BIG farm but actually consisted of five farms.
The Mansion House (today's tourist Mount Vernon)
Douge Run
Muddy Hole
Union
River
There was not much difference between the farms and the work the slaves had to do there. The only difference was that the slaves at The Mansion House were mainly house servants, who had better clothing, for one thing, but also better shelter. Also, the slaves at The Mansion House were more skilled than the slaves who worked at the other farms. And what should also be mentioned, the slaves at the Mansion House were mostly male, while the slaves on the other farms, who mainly did farm work, were mostly female.
This gender division now meant that the slave families could not see each other. There was only one day a week where they met and spent time together and that was Sunday. Many left the night before to visit their relatives, as they usually had a very long way to travel to the other farms. The rest of the week was spent working, sometimes up to sixteen hours a day in summertime, which was closely monitored by the overseers. It was also only through said overseers that Washington's instructions were relayed; Washington very rarely had direct contact with his slaves. At least in terms of work instructions.
Washington refused the physical punishment of his slaves and actually the overseers were not allowed to whip the slaves. But there are reports that on special occasions it happened that an overseer physically punished a slave. Washington sometimes knew about it and did not say anything against it. It should be mentioned in passing that according to Virginian law, Washington even had permission to kill slaves without legal consequences if he thought it necessary. Just so you know where the scale is set here.
This whipping was just one of the issues Washington had a problem with towards his overseers. Often drunkenness, laziness, and the like were added to the mix, which later caused Washington to use slaves as overseers.
Washington believed himself to have always treated his slaves fairly and humanely. He and Martha knew many slaves personally and had good relationships with them, which was much observed by outsiders. His slaves loved him, but also feared him in equal measure. But what was also observed by outsiders was that Washington often showed temper tantrums towards his slaves, which doesn't mean much, since it is also known that Washington also had temper tantrums towards his soldiers in the Revolution and also during his political career towards his employees.
Washington was a man of perfection and therefore had little room for error. Everything had to be done exactly as he wanted it done, and mercy to anyone who dared to disobey Washington's orders. He required his slaves to give 100% every day and had massive problems with laziness and loitering. How far the actual laziness of the slaves coincided with Washington's definition of laziness we will ignore here. The fact is that he did not stop this behavior and nagging throughout his life.
In general, Washington was a man who quickly had a problem with even minor mistakes, and he also showed a lack of understanding when his slaves did not work the way he wanted them to. After all, he fed and clothed them, so it was only fair to assume that they would work hard up to sixteen hours a day. Even when slaves were injured, Washington was relentless. There was one case where a slave had an injured arm and Washington just didn't see why the slave couldn't work, after all, he still had the other arm. And even in the winter months, the slaves had to continue to work outside in freezing cold. Even when it was too cold even for Washington to go outside. And we're not talking about harvesting or anything, but also work that had to be done in water areas, like cutting ice out of the water and bringing it to the ice house.
But what did the life of a slave at Mount Vernon actually look like? I already mentioned that the slaves who worked in the Mansion House were usually better off. They had better clothes and also better accommodations. These accommodations were huts with glazed windows, most of which resembled a military barracks. The slaves who worked in the fields were not so lucky, because they had only very small, one-room clay huts.
Once a year the slaves received new clothes from Washington. Men received a wool jacket, a pair of breeches, two shirts, a pair of stockings, and a pair of shoes. Women also received a petticoat and a gown. A few select slaves, mostly those who worked at the Mansion House, were also given fine clothing for Sundays.
Once a day, slaves also received food that consisted of one-quart Indian cornmeal, and twenty salted herrings each month. On Sundays, Washington also allowed his slaves to use the fishing nets to fish in the Potomac, indicating that the rations Washington gave his slaves were not sufficient. From time to time, Washington also gave some of his food to his slaves if there was anything left over; for example, buttermilk or surplus fish.
Selected slaves were also allowed to carry firearms and hunt with them in the nearby woods. The slaves could then decide whether to eat the meat or sell it. Slaves were also allowed to grow vegetables, raise small livestock, and either eat or sell the resulting produce to Washington. On Sundays, the slaves were even allowed to go to the market and sell their goods there. Also, contrary to the majority in Virginia, they were allowed to learn to read and Bibles were distributed among the slaves. Not by Washington himself, but hey, at least something.
But what happened when a slave would escape? Virginia was merciless in that regard. Virginia law was quite specific in how owners could deal with their runaway slaves. For one thing, they could give the slave a fair warning posted at a local church. If the slaves did not heed that warning, the owners had permission to hunt down or kill the slaves in any way they chose.
And my friends, Washington was merciless when it came to recapturing runaway slaves. What may also be interesting to note is that most of the slaves who ran away from Mount Vernon were actually favorites of the Washingtons, which is why Martha and George often felt very betrayed, after all, they had assumed all along that they had treated the runaway slaves well and that they had no reason to run away (I mean, who needs freedom and the right to make their own decisions about their lives?).
Washington mostly used posters in which he offered a "finder's fee" for those who brought his slaves back to him. He also often left detailed descriptions of the slaves on these notices.
When the slaves were then recaptured, Washington forgave them relatively quickly, provided such a thing did not happen again. There are if I have researched correctly, three cases where Washington was fed up with slaves who ran away again and again and did not want to be taught. He then shipped these slaves to the Caribbean, where the conditions for slaves were cruel, to say the least. They had to do terribly hard work there and the punishments were gruesome. Death was pretty certain there. But as mentioned, there are three cases where it is certain, which means that those cases were really exceptional incidents.
Another big instance where many of Washington's slaves ran away was during the American Revolution. This was because the British offered slaves that if they fought on the side of the British, they would be freed at the end of the war. Many slaves answered this call and it is known that 17 of Washington's slaves also fled to fight for the British. Washington attempted to recapture these slaves after the victory at Yorktown. It is known that he was able to recapture about half.
Let's stay with the American Revolution for a moment. Because in the context of this there was a change in Washington's thinking about slavery. Hamilton, John Laurens, and Lafayette were not entirely innocent in this.
For one thing, he gave Lund Washington, who took care of Mount Vernon while George was away, instructions to stop selling slaves against their will. This meant that now even single slaves without families could not be sold just like that. Up until this point, the way it was done was that slaves were sold at public auctions at the highest price.
Also, another moment where slavery came up during the war was when John Laurens wanted to build a regiment of black soldiers. While Washington admitted that black soldiers were a resource that should not be ignored, he also had his doubts. He feared that slaves might get "foolish" ideas if they now saw a regiment made up of black soldiers. This was despite the fact that Washington was surrounded by men like John Laurens and Alexander Hamilton who were so outspoken against slavery. He often tried to wriggle out of the issue when it came up.
Didn't do much good, however, as Congress suggested a solution that slaves would serve as soldiers. Once the war was over, the slaves would receive their freedom and each slave owner was to receive $1,000 in compensation. This plan vanished into thin air, however, as many slaveholders clearly opposed it.
Washington wrote John Laurens that he was disappointed that the plan did not work out and freedom was so important that everything could be sacrificed for it, while deep down he was never really convinced of Laurens' plan.
Washington saw slavery as a burden, even before the war began, yet he never took a public position on it but confined his opinions to private letters. And even this said burden was more economic than moral.
As already mentioned, Washington had more slaves than he needed and was also stuck with these slaves on high fixed costs. There is even lore of plans in which Washington intended to sell all of his slaves to keep the war financially under control. It shows us that Washington saw slaves (although he saw it differently and assumed that he treated his slaves as "normal" human beings) more as another form of saleable property than actual human beings. Or to make a long story short, Washington was in part a double-minded asshole who showed disgust at tearing apart slave families but apparently had no problem selling all his slaves for pure profit as long as he didn't tear said families apart.
At one point in his life, Washington switched his cultivation from tobacco to other crops, but this meant that he could no longer employ all of his slaves, as tobacco is a very labor-intensive crop. As I mentioned earlier, Washington refused to break up slave families by selling a family member, this moral attitude on his part and the fact that he now had more slaves than he actually needed resulted in his slave population continuing to grow without him really being able to do anything about it.
At some point, in 1783 it came to a breaking point when Lafayette approached Washington and confronted him about the issue of slavery. Lafayette, much like Hamilton and Laurens, was strongly opposed to slavery and accordingly had a "minimal" problem that his idol and the person he looked upon as a father continued to be a slave owner. He made an offer to his adopted father that they buy a small plot of land, free the slaves there and use them as tenants instead. Washington declined this offer, not because he didn't like the idea, but rather because the timing was bad. Washington was pretty broke at this point (as he so often was in his life). Washington's economic life was based on slavery, so he couldn't just free all his slaves without crashing completely. He politely rejected Lafayette's plans, but at the time indicated several times that he would like to be free of slavery. A statement that he again made only privately but not publicly.
Again, it should be noted that Washington's views on slavery always varied greatly depending on whom he was speaking to. When he spoke to Virginian farmers, he was cold and merciless, but when he spoke to people like Lafayette or Hamilton, he was suddenly an altruist.
There is an interesting letter from 1786 in which Washington, briefly summarized, expresses that he never wants to receive another slave by purchase and in which he also expresses the wish that slavery is slowly but surely abolished. Sounds very noble in itself, if it weren't for that plot twist where Washington added that he would sell all his slaves to pay his debts. Just because his slaves were costing him more in maintenance than he actually wanted. And even the first statement Washington apparently quickly discarded, because in a later letter in 1787 Washington wrote to Henry Lee Jr. that the increasing number of his slaves was causing him grief, but in the next breath, he asked Lee to buy him a slave who was capable of bricklaying. No punch line.
Washington also noted during this period, after switching from tobacco to other crops, that the number of his slaves had increased to 217, 92 of whom were children.
In 1791, Washington moved to Philadelphia and there was confronted with another "problem." Because in Pennsylvania, there was legislation that any adult slave who spent six consecutive months in the state was automatically free. Washington was then advised that if however, the slaves left the state just before the time limit expired, and then came back, the time limit would start all over again. And now you may guess what Washington did... That's right, he took advantage of this loophole and always sent his slaves to Mount Vernon just before the end of the term and brought them back.
In 1793 Washington signed a law that allowed slaveholders to capture their slaves even across state lines and he also made use of this law, even though he did not want his name to be seen in any wanted letter.
Washington saw slavery as more of a political embarrassment than really a moral problem and it was not until 1799 that Washington decided to redraft his will. Natural procreation increased the number of his slaves to 317. Washington, however, could not free these slaves just as he pleased. The problem was that not all slaves belonged to him. Here are some numbers. Of the 317 slaves, 124 belonged legally to Washington, and 40 were rented from a neighbor. The other 153 slaves were part of the Custis estate and would be inherited by Martha's grandson once she died. So legally, only 277 slaves belonged to the Washingtons, since the others were rented.
Washington owned less than half of the slaves who worked on his farms. That alone is not enough of a problem. Of these 277 slaves, 98 were under the age of twelve and therefore could not work and 90 were registered as married. Many of Washington's slaves had married slaves who belonged to Martha or they had married slaves who came from entirely different plantations. And here again, came the problem that Washington did not want to break up families. Sure, you could say now that Martha could just free her slaves, but she wasn't allowed to, because the slaves were part of the inheritance.
So he arranged that his slaves would be freed as soon as he and Martha passed away. (He didn't want Martha to go without a regular income, and she would if so many slaves were liberated). And he also made sure that the slaves were taken care of and that they were given perspectives. The elderly slaves and the very young were to be properly fed and clothed by the heirs. Young slaves, before being freed, were to be taught how to read, write and learn a profession so that they could find employment. He also financed a fund to take care of the old and sick slaves after they gained their freedom. And after Washington finally died, Martha signed a letter in 1801 that freed all his slaves. As I said, his slaves, not all slaves.
To conclude this is quite difficult since Washington had a split personality when it came to slavery. It was only over many years that he had his qualms with it and even those qualms were more economic than moral. He had never publicly spoken out against slavery and I'm pretty sure if he hadn't had such a surplus of slaves and if they hadn't cost him so much, he wouldn't have had so much trouble with it either.
I hope I was able to summarize nicely for you guys. As I said, I left out a lot and I didn't go into detail about individual slaves. But if you want to know more about it, just write me.
GWash and slavery?
Don’t worry, I didn’t forget you. I’m still working on it and hopefully I’m able to answer your question this weekend. Just had a lot of stress the last few days and since your question remained a little on the track
