Plance!! (Please)
The tension in the air was so thick you could cut it with a knife.
When Lance had called Pidge to help him “Get comfortable” on his vacation, she had not expected him to give her directions to a mountain log cabin. Lance was always more of a beachfront kind of guy in her opinion.
She also wasn’t expecting the noxious miasma of stawberry scented candles to hit her smack in the face the moment she opened the door.
Or Lance to be laying sprawled out as if he’d tripped and fallen, a leg hung on the arm of a loveseat, wearing a red satin robe that was too short to be considered modest.
“Um... Hi, Pidge,” he said, an anxious smile gracing his features, “you’re early.”
Pidge nodded.
“Lance, are you trying to tell me something?”
Put a pairing in my asks and I’ll write a snippet for them

Starbucks in the City (and Soap Operas in the Park)
AO3 Link (5611 words)
In which Lance and Allura, while the latter is on break from dealing with the United Nations after revealing Voltron and aliens to Earth, go for a drink and a walk in New York City.
This fic was inspired by this piece of fanart by @michelecandraw.
(You can tell that this was just inspired by it, not actually meant to go along with it, because I deviated so wildly from the image.)

“I went to the desert to listen to country music.” It falls out of him, and he keeps going, voice hushed like there’s more than just him and Lance in this room. “It always reminded me of you and I would go stare at the stars, think of you, and listen to country.”

I’ve seen tons of written headcannons, but I haven’t seen anyone’s visual interpretations of the Voltron lions as humans, so I had to take a crack at it!
Bonus points to anyone who knows what inspired what the lions are wearing!

i think the reason ppl don't want to use McClain even if most latinxs come from European roots bc genocide:) they killed most native people, is that... there's a need for representation, and last names are so. important and relevant to that. having a latinx character with a very white last name doesn't feel completely like representation. or that's how i see it as a latina myself (i saw the ask about lance and had to put my input as a latina im sorry:c)
It’s a fine line to cross – because you don’t want to underrepresent someone’s ethnicity, but at the same time you don’t want to overrepresent and fall into the field of “stereotype.” So technically and historically, the last name McClain makes sense. But I also understand why people choose to use Serrano, Sanchez, Alvarez, etc in their fics. And that’s a really easy way to include representation without shoving it in people’s faces like ‘LOOK WE HAVE A CUBAN CHARACTER DON’T YOU SEE US BEING ALL INCLUSIVE?” Honestly, I think creators should, like, sit down with the cast and crew of Brooklyn 99 for a seminar on how to include good rep! XD Thanks for you input, btw. Please don’t apologize for weighing in on something you are knowledgable about. It helps people like me! :)

Voting on a New Story :)
I’m going to extend voting on Patreon until tomorrow night, and here are the stories that are up to vote on! (There are longer snippets of these up on Patreon.)
1. Lance's Mom Takes Charge and Conspires Against the Garrison
Dr. Estella Caridad McClain-Alvarez knew her son was alive. It wasn’t a question, it wasn’t a hope or a feeling. She knew that her Lancito was alive, that he wouldn’t run away or blow up Garrison property in protest or whatever bullshit excuse they had tried to feed her.
... But Estella couldn’t care less about mass hysteria or upending an entire branch of the world’s space exploration military base she wanted her son back, and she would stand her ground and spend every last minute, every last cent she had, to retrieve him.
2. Lance vs. Lotor
Lotor laughed again, turning away to head to his rooms, where food would be waiting. Lance stared at the prince’s back, and not for the first time, imagined plunging a blade directly into it.
But the day when he actually did defeat Prince Lotor, it would on Lance’s terms, and he would do it while looking the evil asshole directly in the face. For Keith. For Hunk. For Pidge and Shiro. For Allura and Coran. For Earth.
When his friends, his family, finally came for him, Lance needed to be ready. But until then, he had to stay alive.
And that was easier said than done.
3. Keith is a Blade, and Lance Joins In
Keith knew he couldn’t avoid the team when he landed — not when he had to announce his arrival and dock shortly after, but he didn’t expect to see Lance ready and waiting, practically bouncing on the balls of his feet. It was so out-of-character, Keith needed a second to steel himself before disembarking, uncertain of what to expect.
“Keith!” Lance shouted, and he ran for him, reaching up for a fist-bump, which Keith granted somewhat suspiciously. Lance followed it up with a hard clap to his back, right over Keith’s injuries.
Keith couldn’t hide the pained gasp, but he turned it into a cough and a laugh, saying, “Wow, did something happen? Why are you so happy to see me?”
4. Lance and Keith in a Different Sci-Fi Universe
Senior Chief Petty Officer Iverson had never liked him, but Lance didn’t let that stop him from smiling winningly — and then freezing because holy shit, that was Garrus Vakarian, one of the Heroes of the Citadel.
“At ease, McClain,” Vakarian said, and his mandibles twitched, faintly amused.
Lance hadn’t even realized he’d frozen mid-salute, and wondered what would be more awkward — finishing the sign of respect and then at easing, or just …
“McClain. Sit.” Iverson made the choice for him, and Lance found himself sitting in the chair his hands settling on his knees, one of said knees jigging uncontrollably. “Now, first off — if I had my way, you’d be off the force and back in basic Alliance training.”
This was pretty much what Lance had expected to hear, and he blinked at his superior officer, gesturing back towards the holding cells. “Yeah, but then, would you have that dust dealer tied up in copper wire and with a neat little bow, waiting to be prosecuted?”
5. Lance and Keith vs. A Garrison Conspiracy
He knew he’d gotten in without having to open it, and he grinned as he ran back inside, eager to show off to his older siblings, his father, and his mother. Everyone congratulated him, Veronica with a noogie, Marcos with a backbreaking hug, and Lance accepted the praise with a glowing smile.
His mother patted his cheek, murmuring, “Ah, mijo. This isn’t going to be easy.”
Lance nodded. “I know. But it’s been my dream since before I can remember, mamá. It’ll be best worst decision I’ve ever made.”
Lance wanted to see the stars up close. He wanted to fly space ships and go where no one had gone before. But he had a second, secret reason to get into the Galaxy Garrison —namely, to turn that place upside down, and finish what his mother started.
6. Lance and Keith, a Spirited Away AU
“You’re here with your family?!” The guy sounded even more shocked and appalled. Lance glanced down at this weird dude’s outfit — it was a strange white tunic, large blue shorts, a red belt cinched around his waist. He also had a truly unfortunate mullet. Lance opened his mouth to comment on this, but he was interrupted by a push. “No, you can’t. You have to go — get out, Lance — you’re in danger!”
The urgency in Mullet Boy’s voice was sincere. Lance couldn’t even begin to consider the what the actual hell part (this guy knew his name?).
The sun was setting. Lance hadn’t even noticed how much time had passed. The guy gave him another shove, hard, but not violent, and Lance turned to try and — wait, the temple place thing … It had lit up. There were shapes and shadows …
… And they didn’t look human. They didn’t look like anything like Lance had seen before.
And as a special bonus, 7. Merlin and Arthur Are Subject to the Entire Kingdom of Camelot Trying to Set Them Up (Which is my holiday gift to everyone on Patreon — multiple chapters of this incomplete story.)
“Merlin, I want you to work as hard in keeping yourself alive as you do keeping me alive, if it’s all the same to you. And no more silly risks — that assassin, he could have sliced you open if not for Sir Averill, and while your initial life-saving maneuver was successful, your second flailing attempt was unnecessary — I could have handled it from there.”
Merlin grinned inanely. “Of course, sire, that’s why you were lying there like a sack of potatoes.”
Arthur scoffed. “I most certainly was not! I was getting my knife out, you infuriating horse’s ass!”
“Taking your own sweet time of it. I thought perhaps you’d had too much wine, and I had to take the initiative. Next time we’ll come up with some hand signals.”
And that’s everything for now :) So for everyone already on Patreon who is on the voting tier, voting will end tomorrow evening — and if anyone wants to vote on or read one of these tales once it’s voted on, you are welcome to join in! :) And if you can’t, then no worries, and thanks for hanging around here with me! :)

Fangs, Fur, and Phantoms - Chapter 4
Chapter 1 | Chapter 2 | Chapter 3
Next Chapter
Finally our protagonists begin to cross paths.  Lance is an old, old man, Keith makes some new friends(?), and Shiro and Allura are now working under a deadline.
Enjoy!
Keith looked over his boyfriend’s shoulder as he tapped away at his laptop, “Anything?”
“Nothing so far.  Granted, the search terms ‘big dangerous animal’ aren’t very specific.”
He and Lance had decided to do a bit of research to see if they could figure out what kind of creature Pidge had seen while scrying.  The search brought up plenty of animals, bears, moose, timber wolves and the like, but none seemed to be native to this area.
As Keith watched Lance scroll through pages and pages of “What To Do If a Bear Attacks You”, Romelle poked her head into Keith’s room.
“Laundry day, today,” she said, “Got any whites?”
Keith gestured to the hamper behind him, eyes still glued to the computer screen.
As Romelle picked the hamper up, she glanced over at the pair, “What are you two doing anyway?”
Lance snapped the laptop shut.   “Nothing,” he said too quickly.
Way to not look suspicious, Lance, Keith thought, rolling his eyes.  “I’m helping Lance set up a Facebook profile.  It’s time to make this old geezer a proper twenty-first century man.”
Romelle snorted, “Just say you’re watching porn together, Keith, it’s okay.”  She balanced the hamper on her hip and left the room.
Once she was gone, Lance turned around to glare at Keith, “‘Setting up my Facebook profile’?  Really?  Now your sister’s gonna think I’m useless with technology.”
“It’s because you are useless with technology.”
“Am not!”
“Lance, you yelled at the Blu-ray player last weekend because it ate your copy of Ghostbusters.”
“It wouldn’t give it back!”
Keith was about to list off more examples of Lance’s hopelessness with technology, when the sound of the doorbell interrupted him.
“Keith, were you expecting someone?” Romelle’s voice carried up from downstairs.
“Mom probably just forgot her house keys again,” Keith called back.
Keith heard the sound of the door being opened and two voices talking.  One was clearly Romelle’s and the other was one he hadn’t heard before, a man’s voice.  After a moment, the conversation stopped and was replaced by the sound of Romelle’s footsteps on the stairs.
“It’s two people in suits,” said Romelle, poking her head back in the doorway, “They want to talk to you.”
“Huh,” Keith got up from his chair and followed Romelle out of the room.
“Do you think they’re social workers?” Romelle whispered to him, “Are they here to take me away?”
“You’re eighteen now, Romelle, they’re not legally allowed to take you away.” said Keith, but his insides had begun to churn.  Eighteen might be the year humans became legal adults, but he had no idea what kind of rules applied to changelings.
Through the doorway, Keith could see the two individuals Romelle was talking about.  One was a tall Asian man with a scar across the bridge of his nose, wearing a crisp black suit and tie.  The other was a black woman with shockingly white hair, also neatly dressed in a black blazer and matching pencil skirt.
“Keith Kogane?” the man asked.
“Yeah?” said Keith.
“I’m Agent Shirogane and this is Agent Prince,” the man reached out for a handshake.
“Nice to meet you,” said Keith, taking the handshake and jumping a bit when his hand met with cool metal.
“We have a few questions we’d like to ask you about the recent death of James Griffin.  May we come in?” said the woman.
“Uh…sure,” Keith waved them into the living room, filled with relief that they weren’t here for Romelle, followed by apprehension that, apparently, they were here for him.
The two agents sat down on the couch while Keith sat across from them.  The female agent picked up a bit of fur that had rubbed off the couch cushion onto her skirt.  She let it float to the ground, frowning.
“Sorry about the hair,” said Keith, “We haven’t vacuumed in a while in here.”
“Do you have a dog?” said the male agent.
Whoops.  “We, uh, dog-sit for the neighbors a lot.”
The man, Agent Shirogane, apparently, decided to drop it, “So, Keith, if I understand correctly, you’re the one who originally found the body.  Is that correct?”
Keith shifted in his seat, “Yes.  Well…I mean, me and my family.”
“So your family was with you?” said Agent Prince, “What were you doing at the time?”
“Going for a hike,” said Keith.
“At night?”
“It’s…quieter then.”
“As I understand it,” said Agent Shirogane, “You and Mr. Griffin were in the same class in high school.”
“Yeah, I guess we were.”
“Did you know him?”
“Well, it was a small class.  Everyone kind of knew everyone.”
“I see.  Would you say the two of you were particularly close?”
“Not…really.  He had his own group of friends and I kept to myself mostly.”
“Was there ever any tension between you?”
“Tension?”
Agent Shirogane nodded, “Did you two ever get into any fights, arguments, things like that?”
The living room carpet was suddenly fascinating to Keith, “I mean…maybe once or twice?  He was…We just didn’t get along.”
“Keith,” said Agent Prince, “We need you to be honest with us.”
“Yeah…yeah, we fought a few times.  He said some things about my family I didn’t like.”
“Can you be more specific?”
“I would rather not.”
Keith waited for the two agents to press the issue, but they simply nodded and Agent Shirogane said, “I’d like to hear more about you, Keith.  Can you tell us a little bit about yourself?”
“Well…” said Keith, “I’m twenty-two.  I work at the bike repair on Main Street.  I, uh, live here with my mom and my sister.  You’ve met her already.”
“The girl with the pigtails,” said Agent Shirogane, nodding, “Am I right in thinking one of you is adopted?”
“What gave it away?  The different ethnicities?”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to pry.”
“No, it’s fine, we get it a lot.  Romelle’s the adopted one.”
“I assume your mother and sister were the ones hiking with you the night you found the body?” said Agent Prince.
“Well, it was my whole family, really.  I, um, have a large extended family.”
“It’s nice that you’re so close to them,” said Agent Shirogane, “Was anyone else with you at the time?”
“Well, there was…” Keith began to say before he heard footsteps on the stairs.
Lance poked his head out of the stairwell, “Everything okay down here?”
“Yeah,” said Keith, “We were just…”  He turned and, to his surprise, the two agents were on their feet, looking up at Lance in shock.
“Am I interrupting something?” said Lance.
“No, no, you’re good.  These two are just here to investigate the Griffin case,” Keith turned toward the agents, “This is my boyfriend, Lance.”
Agent Shirogane cleared his throat, “Yes, well, it’s nice to meet you.  We should really be going, though.  Thank you for your cooperation, Mr. Kogane.”
They were halfway out the door before Keith could even get out a “no problem”.
“What did those two want?” said Lance.
“They just wanted to ask me some questions about Griffin.”
“Is that all?  And here I was hoping they were here to proposition you.”
“Lance!”
“What?  They were good-looking!  I mean, did you see that lady?  She was gorgeous!  And the guy was a total dreamboat!  You should have asked them to stay for drinks.”
Keith rolled his eyes, “I’m not going to risk getting arrested just so you can have some eye candy to look at over dinner.  I feel like I’m in enough trouble as it is.”
“Why would you be in trouble?”
Keith rubbed his arm, “I dunno, I just…I got the vibe they were trying to get me to confess to something but they didn’t want to come out and say what.”
“Hey, listen, you’ve done nothing wrong.  You were just there when the body was found and they want to interview all the eyewitnesses”
“Then why didn’t they interview you?  You were there too.”
“Maybe they plan on it.  Maybe they’ll knock on my door tomorrow and then I can invite them to stay for drinks.”
Keith laughed, but it did little to chase away the uneasiness settling in his stomach.
***
“Lance McClain?  The Lance McClain?”
“The Blue Nomad himself,” said Shiro, scrolling through the PBI files open on his laptop.  The two of them had come to this coffee shop to regroup and process what they had just discovered.
Allura took a sip from the mocha she had ordered, “Well, I guess that clears up the mystery of where he went after dropping off our radar.”
Shiro nodded, “Jeez, this guy’s had a lot of aliases.  Alejandro Espinosa, Leandro Alvarez, Isamu Kurogane — that’s from a stint in Japan.”
“What was he doing in Japan?”
“Apparently he went over with a group of Jesuits and decided to take a decade-long vacation.”
“He’s certainly lived a full life,” said Allura, “Who was he originally?”
“Carlos Montoya,” said Shiro, scrolling to the bottom of the file, “Born in Cuba in the early 1500s.  His father must have been a conquistador.  It says here he turned during a smallpox outbreak but that’s about all we know about him.”
“Well, what’s he doing in a small American town?  With a werewolf boyfriend no less?”
Shiro shrugged, “Maybe he got tired of wandering.”
“Think he has anything to do with the Griffin case?”
“It…doesn’t really seem like a vampire’s work, but I suppose we can’t leave out any possibility.”
A middle-aged woman in a waitress uniform approached their table.  Her name tag read “Colleen”.
“Can I get you a refill, ma’am?” Colleen said to Allura.
“I’m all right for now, thank you,” said Allura, “It’s very good, though.”
Colleen nodded, “My customers always say our drinks seem to make their whole day go better.  You folks in town for the All Hallows Eve Festival?”
“The what?”
“Big annual event coming up this weekend.  People come from all over the state to sell handmade crafts, baked goods, that sort of thing.  You should stop by, we’ll have a booth set up by the town square this year.”
“We’ll be sure to check it out,” said Allura, giving the woman a polite nod.
“I hope to see you there.  Oh, and if it’s vampire legends you’re interested in, you should talk to my daughter.  She’s quite the researcher when it comes to local folklore.”
Shiro realized with a start that his laptop was still open, “Yes…well…thank you for the coffee.”
“Of course.  Let me know if you need anything else.”
Once she was out of earshot, Shiro turned back to Allura, “The All Hallows Eve Festival?  That’s not good news.  People from all over the country coming here when there’s a man-eating monster on the loose?”
Allura nodded, “Well, now we’ve got a deadline.  We have until this weekend to find out what killed James Griffin and stop it.”

pls tell me you're giving lance a latino surname :(
originally i was just going to use mcclain (although it wasn’t going to be used much at all, admittedly) but i’m open to other options. i think i saw he was given one in the “Lance’s Story” handbook but i haven’t been keeping up with any fandom news really since the release of s7, and it’s not recorded on the fandom wikia (as i just checked).
i might end up using alvarez because it makes me think of “one day at a time,” which is one of my favourite shows (and is about a cuban-american family, and i recommend the show to literally everyone, so) but like i said, i’m always open to suggestions.
as we haven’t gotten too deep into lance’s family / backstory (which chapter fourteen, coincidentally, is going to delve deeper into it, actually) i haven’t thought too much about his surname (as i’m keeping the go-lion surnames for everyone else, like keith and hunk) but it was a thought in the back of my head as to how to handle it ‘properly’ and what that would look like.
so thank you for your input. i’m definitely going to take it into account.

How about five headcanons for Adrien and Lance? :D
Adrien (Agreste, I hope)
1. Adrien considers Tamaki Suoh from Ouran High School Host Club a personal hero and has endeavored to emulate his character as Chat Noir.
2. All of the women Adrien has been "officially" attracted to have been dark haired POC or biracial women, usually considered to be talented, competent, and/or at the top of their game; your Ladybugs, your Kagamis, your Marinettes, and, at his most audacious, Lucy Liu.
3. On his worst days, Adrien goes through what Plagg calls "the five stages of Madrien: sadrien, sassdrien, bratrien, WAAAAdrien, and got-it-out-of-my-system-so-now-I'll-soon-be-gladrien.
4. Adrien has an agreement with his father that Gabriel is not to pick out his clothes for him; in spite of his ability as a designer, Gabe has a bit of trouble picking out clothes that a person Adrien's age would enjoy wearing (who wants to go to a pizza parlor dressed in a three piece suit with a dark sapphire silk tie!?).
5. Though he'll never admit it, Adrien has his father's eye for sharp formalwear. He helped Nino pick out an ensemble for an anniversary date with Alya. His efforts, as reported by Marinette, left Alya speechless for the first time in her life.
Lance (Voltron or at least my version of it)
1. Lance actually takes after his Uncle Pedro, his mother's Danny DeVito-esque brother who works at LoanDepot Park. He's sort of a fixture there, often getting everybody up to cheer, talking with fans and vendors, sort of an unofficial mascot for the Marlins. In many respects, serves the same role in the stadium that Lance does on Voltron. He also claims to have met George W. Bush while he had been owner of the Texas Rangers, though given Pedro's age and the time frame of Bush's ownership, even Lance is doubtful of this claim.
2. Lance is very good with kids, a fact which has aided the team on several missions (unseen in canon but seen in our hearts and minds).
3. Lance's full name is Lance Carlos Alvarez Serrano (in Latin America, many Latinx people have four names: first, second, paternal last, and maternal first). He most often uses "Lance Alvarez" to introduce himself.
4. In spite of his hard work to get into the Galaxy Garrison, Lance only managed to stay there because his sister, Veronica, pulled strings for him, a fact which is a point of contention between the two of them once he discovered it.
5. Lance had a chance to get a college scholarship for his performance on his high school swim team, but gave it up to pursue his dreams of space travel. His family was supportive but had mixed feelings about this decision.

THEY SEE DEAD PEOPLE?
On June 12th, 2009, the existence of the paranormal was accepted as fact in the eyes of the world after two young clairvoyants who were supported by both the English and American governments completed a series of tests with the exact same responses while in two different parts of the world. The clairvoyants, twins Allura Altea and Lance Alvarez-McClain, were separated at the age of two and were told nothing about each other, one living in London, England and the other in Tampa, Florida. Despite the circumstances, both children knew things about each other's lives that were seemingly impossible and both had been medicated for apparent hallucinations since a young age. ... That paranormal au where Lance and Allura are siblings and ghost are real. (Most of them are real angry)

Did H and L finally get last names? I just saw someone say that L’s last name is too white and complaining that K still hasn’t gotten one, but I didn’t hear that they finally had official ones which would end a lot of that discourse.
Not according to the voltron website. The new cadets have last names, so we’re hoping Lance and Hunk and Keith get some canon names eventually.
You’re probably seeing people talk about the reboots. There’s been talk of McClain (a fanon last name) being too white for eons, and a fair few people will replace it was common Cuban names like Espinosa, Alvarez, etc, but McClain has just stayed the most popular fanon name. Kogane is also just a fanon name, so they’re probably just talking about what rewrite Keith/Akira’s last name should be
