favorite color: I have to say Bordeaux, I’m obsessed with it.

currently reading: haven’t gotten to reading anything at all lately, I started the Lies of Locke Lamorra last year and am still not done. people need to keep tagging me in these to keep me accountable lol

last movie: I think that was the Witch

last series: binged Wellmania on Netflix in one evening but other than that have not any shows right now I’m crazy about

sweet, savoury, spicy: I am a salty person through and through, but like some spicy here and there

craving: breakfast (it’s noon right now)

tea or coffee: I’m going with tea because it can do everything coffee can and more

currently working on: nothing, relaxing on my vacation, and maybe on the side trying to gather inspiration for my first tattoo

I love how Guilds have become associated with modern Unions, when actual historical guilds maimly existed for the sole purpose of ensuring a monopoly for their members over whatever service they controlled in the local city they existed in.

Honestly an actual Adventurer's guild would be all about killing or bankrupting any new adventurer who doesnt wanna join, far more than providing actual benefits for it's members, in order to ensure the current crop of adventurers retains their monopoly over monster slaying, or dungeon delving, and wont be challenged by some up and coming newcomer, for the rewards of their jobs.

Honestly it sounds like a good idea for a deconstruction Fantasy manga or game.

True. Given the current economic state of the US, though, I can see why unions are on a lot of people's minds and there's a drive to educate people about the benefits of the ideal version. And, admittedly, it's a fun new lens to look at the old Fantasy trope through.

For the more historically accurate version of guilds, though, I recall a conversation in 'The Lies of Lock Lamorra' about how the wizards' guild got its start that way until they had a complete monopoly on wizardry and magic. If we ever get another book in that series, though, we might see how that kind of policy can lead to trouble for the guild itself eventually.

i think something that locke lamorra has thats missing from this character (and im like <20 pages in so ymmv) is just the sheer cockiness and arrogance. i think a good thief, esp in a fantasy series, has a certain amount of drama and flair, and absolute confidence in his skills

anyway theres two thoughts and one of them is that i think a part where red seas kinda fails is that the characters never felt in control of the Plan. they were getting yanked around by other people pretty much the entire time and then ended up mostly doing things Other than thieving and thats like. the entire point right? there wasnt the satisfaction of the Plan coming together, partly bc it was foiled (on purpose) and partly bc the characters spent so much time away from it that it didnt feel all that significant

granted i think the Foiled Plan was on purpose from the author, but the rest of it is like. idk i dont want the next book to be more Not Thieving

its a very weird feeling to go from an adult book about thieves to a ya novel about thieves. one is like eating a full course meal (still chewing over the book) and the other is like eating popcorn (entertaining enough but lacking something)
