Recording Shada in 2002.
From DWM 330, May 2003:
PAUL MCGANN
INTERVIEW BY GARY GILLATT
We first spoke in Vancouver in 1996…
[sings] Ah yes, I remember it well…
…And here we are in Bristol, years later, with James Fox and Andrew Sachs. Would you ever have thought it?
Well, when my agent was telling me about it, I thought we had a bad line. She said, ‘James Fox is in it, and Andrew Sachs, and so-and-so and such-and-such’ and I assumed I was mishearing. I mean, how could it be?
Were you familiar with the work of Douglas Adams?
Not really, only Hitchhiker’s Guide. I’m not a sci-fi reader at all, that’s not my thing. I didn’t really know a great deal about Adams – I certainly didn’t realise he was this amazing polymath. But Lalla speaks so eloquently and passionately about him, and I’ve come to understand why he was so well-loved and respected, and, of course, the quality of the script speaks for itself.
Are you enjoying playing the script?
Well, compared to last year’s plays, and the year before, you can definitely tell it’s from a different source. It has a different tack, and a whole different kind of wit. If you were at a blind tasting, and shown just a page or two of every script we’ve done, you’d easily spot that this one came from somewhere else, from a very fertile mind. It’s great stuff.
Everyone seems to have treated the script with great respect. Almost every line seems to be debated as you all try to get the best of out it.
Comedy is a very serious business. If it was a so-called straight drama, you probably wouldn’t find that much discussion.
So it’s exacting work?
Oh yes, very much so. If a thing is meant to be funny, you’ve got to make sure it’s funny, so you’ve got to get it right. In drama, your main directions are ‘quicker’, ‘slower’, ‘louder’, ‘quieter’. But on something like this you have to watch how you spin every word. It’s not something you can be lazy about.
I hear you’re missing India Fisher…
I sure am. Every time the studio door opens, I think she’s going to walk through. It’s the association with this place, where we do all these plays, and this is the first one we’ve done without her, so it seems very strange. She’ll be back next year, though, won’t she?
I certainly hope so. Will you?
Well, yes, that’s in the planning stages. Apparently, as was revealed to me yesterday, 2003 is the 40th anniversary of Doctor Who, and they’re planning something of a special with me and Davison and Sylv and Colin Baker. I think they’re going to have us as some sort of barbershop quartet or something.
So you’re still finding it fun, being the Doctor?
You sound very sure of yourself when you ask that… You’ve phrased the question to get the answer you want, I think!
Well, I guess as a fan, I’d like to think that Doctor Who likes being Doctor Who…
Well, I’ll put your mind at rest, then, because I am still enjoying it. I like working on audios more than on screen. Day in, day out, it’s just more of a laugh. Doing the visual work, on TV or in pictures, you never get to hang around with the rest of the cast. Here we can swap stories in the green room, or go off in a gang to the pub for lunch. When you’re working on pictures it’s not like that. You go in, do your little bit, and then you’re shunted off to a trailer out of the way. This is much more fun. It’s what being an actor is all about, and I have Doctor Who to thank for that opportunity.
Extracts from the recording of Shada:
The Doctor decides it’s time to get to the point. “What have you done with the Professor’s mind?” he asks.
“It will be put to a more useful purpose,” replies Skagra, haughtily.
“I would argue that it was serving a very useful purpose where it was.” ”Not to me.”
“You realise he died?” says the Doctor.
“Only his mind was of use to me,” says Skagra. “Not his life.”
“You take a very proprietorial attitude to people’s brains,” responds the Doctor, calmly.
“It seems to me,” says Skagra, his voice rising slightly, “that the Time Lords take a very proprietorial view of the Universe.”
There is a pause.
“Hold on,” says Lalla Ward, looking across the room to Nick, the director. “Surely the Doctor would be more accurate about his reference there. Skagra hasn’t stolen the Professor’s brain, only his mind.”
“That’s right,” agrees Andrew Sachs, dropping his thin, high Skagra voice. “The actual brains stay in their heads, don’t they?”
“It’s a good point,” replies Nick. “I imagine that Douglas was trying to avoid repetition of the word ‘mind’.”
“Well Douglas should have known better,” says Lalla, firmly. “And it’s a bit silly to worry about repetition of the word ‘mind’ now. It’s all ‘I want your mind, I want his mind’ for the next 60 pages.”
“So would you like me to change ‘brain’ to ‘mind’ on that line?” queries Paul McGann. “Because, y’know, I think the Doctor would be far more accurate about his reference there.”
—-
The Krag commander growls its greeting to Skagra. “What are your orders, my Lord?”
Andrew Sachs peers over his script. “Cod and chips twice, please. And a carton of mushy peas.”
—-
Paul McGann is recording assorted screams and moans to signify the Doctor’s mistreatment by Skagra’s mind-sucking sphere. “Argh!” he groans, “Aargh…ugh…aaargh!”
“Thanks, Paul,” says Nick. “That’s just brilliant.”
“Three years at RADA for that!” laughs Paul gleefully. “Would you like me to do some more?”
Nick smiles and turns to Andrew Sachs. “Now could we just do your lines as the sphere attacks the Doctor again?” Andrew nods and clears his throat. “This time, Doctor,” sneers the icy voice of Skagra, “This time no one will come to your rescue. I shall have your mind.” It’s chilling stuff.
“Y’know,” says Paul, “I believe you!”
“Poor Skagra,” says Andrew. “I have the feeling he’s a very lonely man. I think he needs a wife and kids. A talking spaceship’s no real substitute for the love of a good woman, is it?”
—-
Skagra has some seriously sexy transport, and the Doctor is stealing it.
“Ship!” shouts the Doctor. “Activate all re-aligned drive circuits.”
“Something very strange is happening,” says the ship, all sultry sibilance.
“Ta-daa!” cheers the Doctor.
Hannah Gordon is in a separate sound booth. “Should I be getting more roused there?” she asks over the loudspeaker.
“I don’t think so,” says Nick. “Just keep it honey-voiced and seductive.”
In the gallery, artist Lee Sullivan crosses his legs. “I don’t think I can take much more,” he says. “I may have to leave the room. I never found myself attracted to a spaceship before!”
In the studio, Sean Biggerstaff is fidgeting with his headphones. “It’s very strange working with a sexy, disembodied voice in your ear,” he says.
“I can’t see any downside to that,” muses Paul.
“Hey, that’s me you’re talking about,” replies Hannah in a sexy, disembodied way.
—-
An invisible spaceship,” smiles Lalla. “Such a brilliant idea from Douglas.”
“And now we have an invisible spaceship on audio,” adds Paul.
“Douglas would have laughed at that. It’s just so marvellously perverse.”
“Shall we go and explore it?”
“Oh, yes, let’s explore…”

THE JEALOUS MOTHER
@princesssarisa @themousefromfantasyland @the-blue-fairie @professorlehnsherr-almashy @faintingheroine @grimoireoffolkloreandfairytales @softlytowardthesun @adarkrainbow @lord-antihero
(In this moroccan variant of Snow White, the heroine's name is Lalla Khallalt El Khoudra. She is aided by seven ghoul brothers and cast into sleep by a magic ring. The brothers send her body off on a camel. A sultan awakens her and marries her, but she runs away and returns to the brothers.)
Once upon a time there was an extraordinarily beautiful woman, her beauty equal only to that of the moon itself. When she was married and got pregnant, she used to go out all night and adress the moon. “O moon”, she would say, “you and I are both beautiful, so beautiful that no one can compete with us.”
The moon would answer her. “True, you and I are beautiful,” it would reply, “but the one still in your womb is yet more beautiful. She will outshine us.”
The mother started to worry about her future as the most beautiful woman on earth. When the time aproached for her to give birth, she called in a midwife she trusted. She asked her to bury the baby as soon as it was delivered and to replace it with a puppy dog. She gave her a lot of gold, and the matter was settled.
The midwife produced a puppy and laid it beside the mother. She then took the baby girl away, but, instead of burying her, sher kept her secluded inside her house and took care of her.
The woman’s husband came home. “Just look at what God has given us,” she said. “A puppy dog!”
The man was stunned. Fearing the public shame, he immediately threw the dog away.
The midwife raised the baby girl in secret until she grew to the age of ten. It was only then that some people in the neighborhood set eyes on her and started taling about an astonishingly beautiful girl. The midwife claimed that it was her own daughter. She named her Lalla Khallalt El Khoudra. Whenever people mentioned a beautiful woman, they would say, “She is not as beautiful as Lalla.”
Thus, her name was on everyone’s tongue. In time the rumor reached the ears of her real mother, and she began to suspect the midwife.
One day she aproached her. “Can you please send me your daughter?” she asked. “She can help me disentangle a ball of wool thread.”
The old woman agreed and, in exchange for a handful of gold, sent her daughter.
When the real mother set her eyes on the girl, her heart started writhing with jealousy. She gave the girl a large ball of thread and asked her to stretch it until it was completely untied. Lalla walked farther and farther, day and night, until she found herself in a strange enviroment - the land of ghouls. When her mother guessed she had walked that far, she cut the thread. Now Lalla could not find her way back home.
Night had already fallen. Lalla started looking around for a shelter to spend the night. She soon realized she was in the midst of strange creatures that looked like the ghouls in tales she had heard from the old midwife. Scared of being eaten alive, she climbed onto a roof and hid herself among the thatch. It was not long before she discovered that her hiding place was the house of seven ghoul brothers, all bachelors. All they had was a slave that cooked for them.
Early in the morning the ghouls went out to hunt. The slave remained behind alone to prepare their food. All of a sudden she heard something up on the roof, and, looking up, she saw a very beautiful face staring down at her. “If you are a human being,” the slave exclaimed, “say so. But if you are jinn, go away.”
“I’m a miserable human being,” Lalla replied. “I’m dying of hunger and thirst. Please help me.”
The slave now invited her down and gave her some food and water. But she warned her that the owners of the dwelling were seven dangerous ghouls; she advised her to stay out of sight, or else they would eat her up.
So Lalla went back to her hiding place. Every day, when the ghouls went out, the slave invited Lalla to join her and taught her how to cook. Lalla learned fast and was very useful to the slave.
As day followed day, the ghouls began to notice a difference in the cooking: it tasted better and better. A new flavour had been added to their food. They discussed this new change among themselves and decided that the next day the youngest brother should stay behind and conceal himself in a hiding place to see what the slave was adding to the food.
The other six brothers left. The slave woke up and as usual called Lalla down from her hiding place. They started cooking together, but now Lalla was doing most of the work while the slave relaxed. The youngest ghoul waited for a while, but then he jumped out of his hiding place and surprised them both. Lalla was frightened and remained glued to the spot. But the ghoul spoke very softly to her, assuring her that she would not be harmed. To the contrary he gave her a warm and friendly welcome. As soon as his eyes looked at her, he fell in love and decided to marry her.
When his brothers returned, he met them at the door and told them what had happened. They all sat down and discussed the matter. They agreed to give the couple a great wedding ceremony the very next day.
With the presence of such a charming beauty their life had been completely into a paradise. They were all very happy.
Thereafter, all of the seven brothers’ care and attention were devoted to Lalla. She was the one who did the cooking, and the slave was now left neglected. Day after day she became more and more jealous. “Promisse me,” she said to Lalla one day, “that you will share everything with me.” Lalla agreed and swore an oath on it.
Everything went according to plan. The slave slept most of the time, and Lalla did the housework. One day, while Lalla was preparing the food, she came upon a broad bean. She ate half and nudged the slave to give her the other half, but the slave pretended to be sound asleep and did not wake up. After a while, she gave a yawn. “Weren’t you nudging me a while ago,” she asked Lalla, “or was I dreaming?”
“Yes,” replied Lalla cheerfully, “I’ve half of a bean for you.”
She felt her headscarf and untied a knot where she had hidden it, but to her disappointment and horror she could not find it. The slave complained that she had broken her promise and reprimanded her.
In the evening the slave took her revenge. She poured water on the fire, so when time came to prepare the food for the ghouls, Lalla had no fire. Time was running, and soon the ghouls would be returning home. The slave told her to go out and borrow some fire from a neighbor.
So Lalla went out to the dwelling of an old ghoul named Uncle Yazit, who was notorious for his ferocity and cunning. But Lalla knew nothing about him. She knocked on his door and waited. He looked outside. “What do you want?” he asked. “Why are you crying?”
“Uncle...”
“Yazit. Uncle Yazit.”
“Uncle Yazit, please give me some fire quickly.”
“Oh, is that all you want? You can have as much as you want. But first, do you want me to pierce your stomach with a red-hot nail, or do you prefer to be marked on the forehead with a sharp knife?”
She stood there stunned, not knowing what to do. He yawned, and she could see his teeth arrayed like sharp knives.
“Make your mind up,” he said in a tone of menace, “ or I’ll -.”
She chose to be marked. He handed her the fire and then cut her forehead until blood started streaming down. She turned away and headed back home apace, with the blood dropping behind her and marking her path. Suddenly, a pigeon appeared and tried to dry her blood with her wings, but Lalla thought it was playing with her and shooed it away. “Oh, please, leave me alone now!” she cried. “I’m so miserable and don’t feel like playing.”
The next day Uncle Yazit followed the drops of blood until he found her door. He knocked. “Give me your finger,” he said, “or I’ll eat you.”
She pushed her finger trough the keyhole. He sucked some of her blood, then left.
And so, every day Uncle Yazit visited Lalla and sucked some of her blood. Gradually, she started feeling weak and looking pale. Her deteriorating health affected her work and cooking. The ghoul brothers started to notice the change in both her behavior and the taste of her food. They wondered why she looked so miserable and pensive all the time. Wasn’t she happy? Did she miss her home? Weren’t they kind enough to her? They always did their best to make her feel confortable and to bring everything she wished. So what was wrong with her? They discussed the matter among themselves and agreed to leave the youngest behind to watch her. He concealed himself somewhere and kept an eye on her movements. In the evening he heard a knock at the door. Lalla went to answer it. Uncle Yazit had come on his usual visit, and she pushed her finger through the keyhole. He sucked her blood and left. Meanwhile, the youngest ghoul just watched from his hiding place and kept quiet. He could not confront Uncle Yazit on his own even if he wanted to.
He waited until his other brothers came back and told them what he had seen. They discussed the problem and made their plan. Next day they decided not to go hunting. Lalla and the slave were both surprised to see them staying at home. They asked the ghouls what was wrong, but they simply answered that they were having a rest day. The house was very quiet.
The time came for Uncle Yazit’s daily visit. When he asked Lalla for her finger, the youngest brother sprang beside her. “Tell him to go away,” he whispered in her ear, “or he’ll be destroyed.”
“Your finger, or I’ll eat you!” Yazit yelled.
Lalla answered as she was instructed. Yazit repeated his demand yet more threateningly, but still she dismissed him with harsh words. When his anger reached its peak, he forced open the door, and it gave way. He fell into a metmoura, the trap the brothers had dug during the night and covered with hay. Now they sprang from their corners and looked down at him. “Now, Uncle Yazit,” they shouted in unison, “You shall rise from that hole smoke!”
Then they called out for Lalla. “How dare you allow a stranger to visit you during our absence?” they yelled at her angrily. “You’ve betrayed us!”
They threatened to send her after Yazit and meet the same fate. But she started weeping and told them the whole story.
Tey looked at the slave and saw her trembling. They dragged her by her hair and flung her down into the pit with Yazit. They pilled wood over them and lit the fire. The smoke rose until nothing was left but black ashes.
Then they resumed their normal life, going out hunting every day while Lalla busied herself preparing their food.
Little by little she recovered her health and serenity. Her complexion was rosy, and that brightned up the brother’s life like a magic candle. They enjoyed her charm, and felt happy again. Every day they showered her with gold and silver. They all loved and worshiped her like a goddess that made them human. By now her room was pilled high with precious presents.
One day, a jewish man, a wandering merchant, passed by the house, yelling “Sweets! Clothes! Cosmetics! Everything you need!” When he heard a voice from inside the house, he stopped his donkey. He led his donkey over to the door and waited. Lalla came out, and he showed her his wares. She chose a few things and asked him for the price. He said he was exchanging his goods for wool, old copper, or silver utensils. She went in and filled a whole sack with silver and gold and gave it to him. He was amazed at her generosity and asked for her name. She said, “Lalla Khallalt El Khoudra,” and then asked him, “Do you know a tribe called So-and-so?”
He said he was much travelled, because his trade took him everywhere. So naturally he knew that tribe only too well.
“Please,” she begged him, “if you go back to that tribe, ask for a woman called Fulana. She’s my mother. Please give her my greetings and tell her I miss her so much.”
The jewish merchant promised and departed, still yelling, “Sweets! Clothes! Cosmetics! Everything you need!”
A few months later, his travels brought him to the tribe where her mother lived. An old but beautiful woman called out to him so she could buy a few things, and she paid him with a handful of wool. When he saw what she was offering him, he laughed at her. “Oh,” he said, “you’re not like Lalla Khallalt El Khoudra who gave me a sack of gold and silver for half of what you have bhought.”
It was then he remembered the promise he had given Lalla. “Oh,” he went on with a sigh, “her beauty surpasses that of the moon itself!”
He was about to ask the old woman if she knew a woman named Fulana, when the goods she bought fell from her hands on the ground. “Please,” her mother said, “tell me more about her. I’m her mother.”
The jewish merchant was surprised. “She sends you her warmest greetings,” he said. “She misses you so much.”
“Tell me,” the woman insisted, “how is she? Where does she live?”
“She lives in the country of ghouls. But she has become their queen. They worship her and serve her like slaves. They give her all the gold in the world. She is very happy, the richest and the most beautiful woman I’ve ever seen in my life.”
“When will you see her again?”
“Very soon, for sure. Perhaps in a month or two.”
The old woman asked him to wait. She went in her house and searched for a present to send her dear daughter. She wrapped a ring in handkerchief and handed it to the jewish merchant: “Please, give her this. Tell her it’s a token from her mother who loves her so much. Tell her to put it under her tongue when she is cooking to protect her against the evil eye.”
The jewish merchant promised to convey the message and went on his way.
Two months later the jewish merchant found himself back in the country of ghouls. He remembered the message and went straight to Lalla’s house. She was delighted to see him again. She chose a few goods and paid him with another sack of gold and silver. He told her he had seen her mother who was very happy to hear about her. He then produced the present she had sent her and repeated what her mother had advised her to do with it. Lalla wept with joy and kissed the handkerchief in wich the ring was stored. She sighed and said she would do as her mother suggested. Then the jewish merchant left to carry on his business.
When Lalla sat down to prepare the meal for the brothers, she untied the handkerchief and put the ring under her tongue. A short while later, she fell into a swoon and remained in a coma looking as still as death. When the ghouls returned home, they found her frozen to the spot. They shook her, but she remained motionless. They cried the whole night and ate nothing.
Next day they made her an attoush, a sort of couch all made of gold and silver and her best jewelry, and laid her down in it. They called their camels and asked each of them one by one: “How long can you carry Lalla?”
“One year,”, one said.
“Ten years,” another said.
“As long as I live,” said a third with the name Naala (or Shoe).
So the ghouls fixed the attoush firmly on the back of the third she-camel. “Do not stop for anyone,” they told the camel. “Roam the world. Remember your secret name is Naala. Responde only to this name.”
The she-camel agreed and departed.
Naala travelled very far, from one place to another, stopping only to eat and drink and never allowing anyone to come close to her. She crossed deserts, valleys, rivers and jungles. She saw all sorts of nations until she reached a territory that was rulled by a rich, famous sultan. When his soldiers saw a she-camel carrying something shiny, they informed him and them chased the camel everywhere. But all their efforts were in vain. The sultan consulted all his magicians, who were helpless in the face of this phenomenon.
As the sultan was riding on his horse toward his palace, he heard an old woman laughing. He stopped his horse. “Why are you laughing, old woman?” he asked.
“All your soldiers and magicians can’t catch a she-camel as old as I am!”
“Do you mean you can catch her?”
“Old as I am, I will bring her to you.”
“Listen, woman! If you do, I’ll make you rich forever. If not, I’ll kill you. Now go!”
They all ridiculed the old woman and considered her as good as dead anyway. Some said she had nothing to loose. She started running in the direction of the she-camel. Suddenly, she lost one of her shoes and started yelling, “My shoe! Shoe! Shoe!” The she-camel heard her and stopped. She kneeled down and waited for the old woman.
Everyone stood there astonished, including the sultan who now believed she had some supernatural powers. The she-camel was then brought into the palace. When the attoush was carefully searched, they discovered inside the corpse of a sleeping beauty. The sultan asked his physicians to examine the body thorougly. They noticed a strange ring stuck under her tongue. When they removed it, the beautiful woman uttered a scream like a newborn baby and started breathing. Gradually, she regained consciousness and opened her eyes. The sultan was struck by her extraordinary beauty and decided to marry her.
Naala the she-camel was taken inside the palace and taken care of. The slaves took Lalla to the bath and gave her a good bath. The following day the sultan took her for his wife.
Days went by, but Lalla never forgot the seven ghoul brothers. Every day she went out and adressed her camel. “How are your feet?” she would ask. “Did you have a good rest?”
When the she-camel’s feet healed and she was ready for another journey, Lalla made her preparations secretly.
One very early morning the sultan had to go to the court for an urgent meeting. Lalla waited for a little while, then slipped away from her room. She took the attoush, fixed it on the camel’s back, and settled herself in it. “Now don’t answer anyone at all,” she whispered to the camel.
They fled from the palace. When the soldiers saw her running like a shadow, they informed the sultan. He ordered them to chase her. They did their best, but it was impossible to catch up with her. They gave up and returned to the palace empty-handed. The she-camel went farther and farther without stopping, through deserts, valleys, rivers and jungles, until she finally reached the territory of the ghouls.
The seven brothers were still in mourning, keeping themselves shut up inside their house. Then all of a sudden, as the camel aproached, Lalla let out a loud cry. When they heard her, they all sprang to their feet and went out to find the camel standing at their doorstep with the shiny attoush. Lalla looked out at them with a smile and waved her hands. They were all very happy. They welcomed her and made a great feast in her honor. Their dwelling became a paradise once again. They all gathered around her.
“Now,” they said, “never answer the door to anyone! Never go out! We cannot afford loosing you again!”

I wasn't, so thanks for letting us know!! It's now been added to our ongoing comics page.
"What if Magical Girls weren't Earth's champions at all? Aoe, Thel, and Gen, better known as the Lovely Trio, first burst onto the scene five years ago when they saved Earth from a surprise space monster attack! Since then, everyone, including Gigi, whose brother died as a bystander in a Lovely Trio battle, idolizes them as superheroic pop icons. But when Gigi witnesses the Lovely Trio battling a monster firsthand, she sees something that causes her to question everything she thought she ever knew about her heroes! A magical new series from the team behind Pandora's Legacy, writer Bones Leopard (Identical) and artists Kelly & Nichole Matthews (Just Beyond), that's perfect for fans of Sailor Moon and Wynd."

Do you guys happen to know all the characters featuring in the Love is Love Anthology story with the secret six? Especially the narrating character, I haven't a clue who he is.
Hello! I believe the narrator is an original character created by Gail Simone specifically for that story.
In the second panel, I don't know who the woman in green is. i assumed she could be Eiko Hasigawa, since she had a relationship with Catwoman, but Eiko has long hair. Maybe that's Selina and Eiko is the one in the Catwoman costume (she had the Catwoman mantle for a while).
Third panel: I remember seeing these two dudes before, but I can't recall their names. The woman is Batwoman, but I think you already know that.
In the last panel, the girl next to Porcelain is Roshanna Chatterji AKA Tremor. The guy in a red hood is Christopher AKA Burden and the girl in blue costume is Holly Ann Fields AKA Virtue. These three are all from The Movement, another comic by Simone.
If anyone can tell who the characters I didn't know are please let us know!

Hi! Thank you so much for this! It's always so hard to find Archie comic edits in the tags, so it'll be nice to have them all in one place. I know your page is under construction but your links are missing the /tagged/ portion of the url, just so people can be directed to the right place! Can't wait to see what you have in store!
Hello! That’s exactly how I felt. Although I have my Archie tag on my personal blog and @dailyindiecomics also has a lot of great archie content, I felt like it wasn’t enough and I wanted to keep them all in one place like you said.
The urls you mentioned are fixed now, thanks so much for the heads up!

Can’t Help Falling In Love
_____________________________
Dearest Readers,
it has come this this author’s attention that the Viscount Bridgerton has begun courting Lady (y/n) (y/l/n) earlier this week. The pair have been seen promenading on several occasions and Mr. Bridgerton has sent flowers every day. Are we to expect a new Viscountess in the ton? Rest assured, if they are to wed, this author will find out.
Yours Truly,
Lady Whistledown.
_____________________________
“Do you truly think he will propose, mama?” your asked your mother. She had woken you up with the latest society papers in hand.
“Of course he will! I would not be surprised if he dances with you four times at tonight’s ball!” your mother replied, a proud smile on her face.
“Don’t be absurd, mama! That would be extremely improper!” you exclaimed, but a crimson blush still appeared across your cheeks at the mere possibility of being close to Anthony for that long. It was no secret that the eldest bridgerton had your affections, but you were not sure if you had his. Despite his actions, the Viscount was known for being a rake of the worst kind and didn’t tend to show his emotions aside from the occasional smile or brooding demeanor.
“My daughter! A Viscountess! Who would have thought?” your mother hugged you tightly, grinning like a cheshire cat.
“Don’t be hasty, mama. You forget he has not yet proposed, he might not at all.” you answered.
“Don’t be absurd my dear! Tonight you shall wear the family diamonds!” she declared and stepped out humming joyfully.
You didn’t want to rush into this, but your thoughts circled back to him during the day and you realised I can’t help falling in love with you, Anthony Bridgerton.
“Do you think she will be here tonight?” asked Eloise to her eldest brother.
“She guaranteed she would.” Anthony replied, the same brooding look as always on his face as he looked at the entry expectantly.
“My son, why don’t you dance with one of the other ladies? I’m sure they are just as fine dancers as Miss (y/l/n)!” the Dowager Viscountess said, already looking around for someone appropriate for her son.
“I do not wish to dance with anyone else, mother.” he responded, still looking at the door.
“My son, bear in mind that you are choosing the future Viscountess Bridgerton, this is not just one more of your affairs. You have only been courting her for a week, it’s still the beginning of the season. Only fools rush in.” Lady Violet muttered so only her son could hear, a smile on her face to keep away the prying eyes and ears of the ton.
Anthony finally looked back at his mother and said “This is not just another affair. (y/n) is different. I -” he looked around then back at his mother. “I’m falling in love with her.”
Violet’s eyes softened, a small smile appearing on her face. This is all she had ever wanted for her children, to find love and live a happy life.
“Well then, I think you would like to know that your dearest has arrived.”
Anthony’s gaze went straight to you and, smiling softly, he thought you looked like an angel. You were wearing a white gown with gold details, long gloves, diamonds and a small tiara. He immediately made his way to you and bowed.
“If I may be so bold, Lady (y/n), you look absolutely stunning. May I have your first dance?” he said with a shy smile. You blushed at his comment.
“Of course, Lord Bridgerton. It would be my honour.” with that, he took your gloved hand, ever so softly, and guided you to the dance floor.
The scenery was truly breathtaking. It was an outdoors ball, so light of the moon and the stars shone upon you. There were also a few lamps scattered, but just enough so the ambience was filled with romance. Taking your place in the midst of the other couples, you looked at each other as you waited for the music to start.
“I meant what I said earlier, you look breathtakingly beautiful tonight.” your heart was beating much faster that normal as he held one of your hands and placed the other on your waist.
“Just tonight?” you remarked in a humorous tone, trying to distract yourself from the feeling his compliment brought you. Only Anthony didn’t catch on, his eyes widened and he stuttered.
“N-no! Of course not! Not just tonight! I-” you felt pity for the poor Viscount and replied “I’m only joking, my Lord.” he relaxed his tense shoulders, chuckling.
“Of course you are.” he mumbled with a smile before spinning you and pulling you back in his arms. This was not part of the dance, so you gasped and started laughing, throwing your head back. Anthony looked at you in awe and thought like a river flows surely to the sea, darling so it goes, some things are meant to be.
“You always take my breath away.” he mumbled tenderly. The song ended and you parted, you looked back and he was still looking at you with a silly smile, making you giggle. You turned your gaze forward right before bumping into someone.
“Cressida! How lovely to see you!” it wasn’t.
“I know what you are doing, (y/n).” she said with the fakest smile you have ever seen.
“And what would that be?” you asked, truly curious as to what she was talking about.
“Don’t be daft, darling. It’s not very attractive. Everyone knows you are trying to seduce the Viscount.” she stepped closer to you and continued “This will never work. He would never marry someone like you. A Viscountess should be elegant, beautiful, sociable and everything else you are not. So, do yourself a favour and bow down while you have time. Wouldn’t want to embarrass yourself when he chooses me over you.” she was grinning when she stepped away and you were holding back your tears.
Not wanting anyone to see you cry, you went to a more secluded part of the garden. What you didn’t know was that Anthony saw the expression on your face as you left and ran after you.
Sitting on a bench you found far away from the party, you cried, hands on your face. The scene broke Anthony’s heart. He stalked to you and said angrily “What did she say to you?” you were startled at first, but when you saw that it was Anthony, you relaxed a bit.
“It was nothing, just Cressida being Cressida.” you tried smiling, but failed miserably.
“It was something if you are here alone and crying.” then he realised. You were alone, unchaperoned. But you were also crying and obviously sad. Shall I stay? Would it be a sin? he thought. Anthony looked back one more time to make sure no one was coming and hugged you, wiping away your tears.
“I can’t stand to see you this way, can’t stand that she hurt you.” he muttered. You looked him in the eyes and asked “Why?” he didn’t know where the sudden confidence came from, but still he said “Because I can’t help falling in love with you.”
You were shocked, but still answered smiling. “I’m falling in love with you too.” The Viscount grinned at that, holding you tighter in his arms.
“I know it is still early in the season and I have only just started courting you, but I can no longer wait.” he knelt to the ground and continued “(y/n), take my hand, take my whole life too. Would you do me the honour of becoming my wife?”
“Yes!” you exclaimed. He stood up laughing, spun you around and gave you a soft kiss on the lips.
“Are you going to tell me what Cressida said to you, future wife?” he asked with a satisfied grin. You laughed and looked at him sheepishly.
“She said you would never marry me, that you’d choose her and that I was not fit to be a Viscountess.”
“Well then” he linked his arm with yours, walking back to the party “I think she will be very surprised with our wedding invitation.” you laughed at that and he resumed. “As for the last part, to me you are perfect and that’s all that matters.”

Arjun's Childhood
"Arjuna!"
A motherly voice calls the little boy through his direction, as he runs towards his mother in pure happiness and hugs her tightly.
"Where did my little lion cub go? I was looking for him everywhere." His mother asked tenderly.
"I was playing with my friends in the park." Arjun replied. "But now I'm back, aayi!"
His mother chuckled, and made him lay his head over her thigh, as she lovingly rubs his hair. "Beta, you know we want the best of you, right?"
"You do, ma." He said.
"Then, listen to me. We will always support you, for what you want to become. But, if I ask.. have you decided what's your dream to be what?"
Arjun rose his head, and looked at his mom with excitement. "I want to be a soldier, ma! The way they fight for us just makes me want to be in it!"
His mom was surprised, and laughed. "Oh, sure, mere lalla. But, you're too young. When you finish your school and all, then you can join the army."
"Really?" A brightness shined in the face of the child, and his mother agreed.
He excitedly hugs his mother, thanking her for allowing. Though, Arjun's father was watching them all along, who was also smiling but his face showed a little sadness beneath the expression.
"Does Baba also accepts what I want to become?" Arjun asked while he kept hugging his mother.
"Of course he will. Why would he not support your dreams?" She replied, smiling and looked at her husband.
Something that expelled him from accepting Arjun's dream to be in the army. It wasn't out of pure dissatisfaction that the father would make his son only do Engineering or such, but it was something which Arjun couldn't understand right now.
But still, he watched his wife play with his son, much to his source of happiness. He curled his lips into a smile, and enjoyed the view.

Hey, Andrea Shea (editor at dc) confirmed Andy Curry is queer and implied it'll come up in Future State: Aquaman. Just fyi
That’d be great! Especially considering that she’s being mentored by Jackson Hyde - I don’t remember seeing a mentorship dynamic between two LGBT superheroes of different generations before. Thanks for letting us know!
First issue comes out next week (January 26) and it can be pre-ordered here!
