Phil Baines, who has died aged 65 of multiple system atrophy, was one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary British graphic design. His work included books, posters, art catalogues and lettering for three important London monuments – the memorial to the Indian Ocean tsunami in the grounds of the Natural History Museum and the 7 July memorials in Hyde Park and Tavistock Square, commemorating the victims of the 2005 London bombings. These projects point to Baines’s defining attributes: a scholarly appreciation of letterforms, a deep-rooted respect for materials and a love of collaboration.
Such attributes can also be seen in Baines’s cover designs for the Penguin Great Ideas series (2004-20), works by “great thinkers, pioneers, radicals and visionaries” that gave him a canvas on which to display his typographic philosophy. The Saint Augustine – Confessions of a Sinner cover, for instance, uses ancient ecclesiastical letterforms and yet looks superbly modern. For Chuang Tzu — The Tao of Nature, Baines arranged letters to suggest a butterfly in flight. David Pearson, one of two art directors for the series, described how his “often-oblique approach gave the series a crucial added dimension”.
Born in Kendal, Cumbria, Phil was one of the three children of Martin Baines, a construction contract manager, and Joan (nee Quarmby), a horticulturalist. Growing up in a Roman Catholic household, he began studies for the priesthood at Ushaw College, County Durham. During the holidays from Ushaw he worked at the Guild of Lakeland Craftsmen, Windermere, and from there his interest and confidence in art grew.
At the start of his fourth year, he quit Ushaw, and in 1980 began a year’s study on the foundation course at Cumbria College of Art and Design. In 1982 he moved to London and enrolled on the graphic design course at St Martin’s School of Art (now Central Saint Martins), where he met Jackie Warner, whom he married in 1989, and where he was among a talented cohort, many of whom went on to study, as he did, at the Royal College of Art.
Richard Doust, then leader of the first-year course at St Martins, recalled the portfolio Baines submitted for admission: “I was so excited … I was sure he was going to be someone very special. He quickly established his individuality. He made typography and particularly letterpress his own territory.”
Baines was fiercely individual – he did not join schools of thought or align himself with fashionable camps. Instead, he built a creative practice based on his belief in the “humanist” qualities of the English typographic tradition.
His contemporaries were using the computer to bring a new complexity to graphic communication. Smart software allowed for the overlapping and interweaving of text in ways that echoed the ecclesiastical manuscripts that Baines admired so much. He was no Luddite, and used the computer himself, yet his work invariably retained an element of the handmade.
Paradoxically, his work was greatly admired by the new generation of digital designers. Neville Brody, for instance, included Baines’s work in his experimental typography publication FUSE, produced to demonstrate the malleability of the new digital typography. Baines’s work does not look out of place among the other contributors, many of them American typography radicals whose multi-layered layouts were driven by modish theories of deconstruction and poststructuralism.
In 1988 he returned to Central Saint Martins (CSM), as part of the faculty. In staff meetings his willingness to say the unsayable was a frequent cause for consternation among colleagues. To his students he preached a doctrine of “object-based learning”, a typically contrarian notion in the age of screen-based and virtual graphic design. He was appointed a professor in 2006 and retired in 2020 as emeritus professor.
Despite his commitment to teaching, Baines did not give up his work for clients. As well as designing books for leading publishers, he worked for the Crafts Council and the Ditchling Museum of Art + Craft, and designed the signage for CSM’s King’s Cross campus. He designed exhibition catalogues for Matt’s Gallery, south-west London, relishing the creative three-way collaboration that existed between the gallery’s director, Robin Klassnik, exhibiting artists and himself.
He wrote books that contributed to the understanding of visual communication: Type & Typography (with Andrew Haslam, 2002), Signs: Lettering in the Environment (with Catherine Dixon, 2003) and Penguin by Design: A Cover Story 1935-2005 (2005), the last of which helped establish Penguin cover art as one of the most important bodies of graphic art in British design history.
With Dixon, he co-curated the Central Lettering Record, an archive of typographic history housed at CSM, and in November 2023 his work was celebrated in an exhibition, Extol: Phil Baines Celebrating Letters, at the Lethaby gallery, CSM. He was appointed as the Royal Mint advisory committee’s lettering expert in 2016, and reappointed in 2021 to advise on the integration of lettering on new coins and medals, with consideration given to special issues and the accession of King Charles to the throne. For this work, in 2023 he was awarded the Coronation medal.
Baines was an enthusiastic runner and cyclist, and loved music, especially the Manchester post-punk band the Fall. He was a collector of signs, lettering, and railwayana, and built his own studios at his home in Willesden Green, north-west London. A few years before his retirement he moved to Great Paxton, Cambridgeshire, where he took up bellringing.
He is survived by Jackie and their two daughters, Beth and Felicity, and by his father.

Growing up in the segregated South, he, his father, and his brother experienced profound racism firsthand.
He earned his BA from FAMU, and he joined the Air Force after graduation where he served during the Korean War as a jet radar intercept officer in the Air Defense Command, and as a navigator in the Air Transport Command. He retired as a reserve major in 1958, after ten years, and was decorated with a Soldier’s Medal of Valor. He attended the School of Theology at Claremont College, where he earned his Ph.D. in religion.
His first church was in Pomona, where he helped grow a congregation of just twelve members to a group of 150. He served at Trinity A.M.E. in Kansas City (1966-71) the First African Methodist Episcopal Church in Seattle; and Los Angeles’ FAME Church in 1977. Under him, the congregation grew from several hundred members in 1977, to roughly 18,000.
He became a nationally known figure in the wake of the 1992 Los Angeles riots; he became involved in the issues of job training, homeowner loans, affordable housing, condom distribution, and HIV/AIDS awareness. He started FAME Renaissance, a non-profit organization that focused on economic development.
He retired as Senior Pastor from the FAME church in 2004. In 2005, he became a senior fellow at the Center for Religion and Civic Culture and continues to work as a liaison to the Los Angeles area and African American and Latino constituents. Understanding the Different Tree Services Available
Tree care services encompass a wide range of tasks aimed at maintaining the health and appearance of trees. Understanding the various services available can help you determine the specific needs of your trees and select the appropriate care options. Some common tree services include pruning, trimming, tree removal, stump grinding, tree planting, and emergency tree care.
Pruning involves selectively removing branches to improve tree structure, enhance aesthetics, and promote healthy growth. Trimming focuses on maintaining the size and shape of trees to prevent overgrowth and maintain safety. Tree removal is necessary for diseased, dead, or hazardous trees that pose a risk to property or safety.
Stump grinding is the process of removing tree stumps after tree removal to prevent regrowth and enhance the visual appeal of the landscape. Tree planting services help establish new trees and ensure proper growth conditions. Emergency tree care provides immediate assistance for storm-damaged or hazardous trees to mitigate risks and prevent further damage.
Researching and Verifying Credentials and Qualifications
When choosing a tree service provider, it is crucial to research and verify their credentials and qualifications to ensure they are reputable and professional. Start by checking if the company is licensed and insured to perform tree care services in your area. Licensing demonstrates that the company meets the necessary standards and regulations for tree care practices.
Insurance is equally important as it protects you and the company in case of accidents or damages during tree care operations. Verify that the tree service provider has liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage to safeguard against unforeseen circumstances. Additionally, inquire about the qualifications of the arborists and technicians who will be handling your tree care needs.
Certifications from reputable organizations such as the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA) indicate that the professionals have undergone rigorous training and adhere to industry best practices. By researching and verifying the credentials and qualifications of the tree service provider, you can ensure that your trees are in capable hands.
Checking for Proper Insurance and Licenses
Before engaging a tree service provider, it is essential to confirm that they have the necessary insurance and licenses to operate legally and safely. Proper insurance coverage protects both you and the company in the event of accidents, property damage, or injuries during tree care activities. Ask the tree service company to provide proof of liability insurance and workers' compensation coverage before commencing any work.
Liability insurance safeguards you from financial responsibility in case of damage to your property or neighboring properties during tree care operations. Workers' compensation insurance covers the medical expenses and lost wages of employees injured on the job. Additionally, ensure that the tree service provider holds the required licenses and permits to perform tree care services in your area.
Licensed professionals are more likely to adhere to industry standards and regulations, ensuring that the work is done safely and effectively. By checking for proper insurance and licenses, you can have peace of mind knowing that you are working with a legitimate and responsible tree service provider.
Reading Customer Reviews and Testimonials
One of the most effective ways to gauge the reliability and quality of a tree service provider is by reading customer reviews and testimonials. Online reviews and feedback from past clients can offer valuable insights into the company's reputation, professionalism, and customer satisfaction levels. Look for testimonials on the company's website, social media platforms, and third-party review sites.
Positive reviews highlighting the company's expertise, responsiveness, and attention to detail are indicators of a reputable tree service provider. Conversely, negative reviews pointing out issues such as poor communication, delays, or subpar work quality should raise red flags. Pay attention to recurring themes in the reviews to get a comprehensive understanding of the company's strengths and weaknesses.
In addition to online reviews, ask the tree service provider for references from satisfied customers who can vouch for the quality of their work. By reading customer reviews and testimonials, you can make an informed decision and choose a tree service provider that meets your expectations and delivers excellent results.
Requesting a Detailed Estimate and Written Contract
Before hiring a tree service provider, it is essential to request a detailed estimate outlining the scope of work, costs, and timeline for the project. A transparent and comprehensive estimate helps you understand the services included, pricing structure, and any additional fees that may apply. Avoid companies that provide vague or verbal estimates without proper documentation.
Review the estimate carefully and ask for clarification on any items that are unclear or ambiguous. Ensure that the estimate includes all relevant details such as tree care services to be performed, equipment used, cleanup procedures, and payment terms. Once you are satisfied with the estimate, request a written contract that clearly outlines the terms and conditions of the agreement.
The contract should include important information such as insurance coverage, warranties, guarantees, and dispute resolution mechanisms. Read the contract thoroughly before signing and make sure you agree with all the terms and conditions. By requesting a detailed estimate and written contract, you can avoid misunderstandings and protect your interests throughout the tree care project.
Inquiring About the Equipment and Techniques Used
When selecting a tree service provider, it is important to inquire about the equipment and techniques they use to ensure that the work is done safely and efficiently. Modern tree care requires specialized tools and equipment to perform tasks such as pruning, trimming, and tree removal effectively. Ask the company about the types of equipment they use and how they maintain their tools for optimal performance.
In addition to equipment, inquire about the techniques and practices employed by the tree service provider. Professional arborists should follow industry best practices and safety standards when caring for trees. Ensure that the company uses proper pruning methods, tree climbing techniques, and safety precautions to protect both the workers and your property during the tree care process.
Avoid companies that rely on outdated or unsafe equipment and practices that could potentially harm your trees or pose risks to the surrounding environment. By inquiring about the equipment and techniques used, you can assess the professionalism and expertise of the tree service provider and make an informed decision based on their capabilities.
Considering the Company's Experience and Expertise
Experience and expertise are key factors to consider when choosing a tree service provider to ensure that your trees receive the best possible care. A company with years of experience in the industry is likely to have encountered a wide range of tree care challenges and developed effective solutions. Experienced professionals can offer valuable insights and recommendations tailored to your specific tree care needs.
In addition to experience, consider the expertise of the arborists and technicians who will be working on your trees. Qualified professionals with certifications and training in arboriculture are better equipped to assess tree health, diagnose issues, and recommend appropriate treatments. Ask the tree service provider about their team's qualifications and ongoing training to stay updated on the latest industry practices.
By choosing a tree service provider with a proven track record of experience and expertise, you can trust that your trees are in capable hands and will receive the care they need to thrive. Prioritize companies that demonstrate a commitment to professionalism, quality service, and continuous learning in the field of tree care.
Asking About Emergency Services and Response Time
Tree emergencies can occur unexpectedly, such as during severe weather events or due to sudden tree failures. When selecting a tree service provider, inquire about their emergency services and response time to ensure that help is available when you need it most. A reliable tree care company should offer emergency assistance 24/7 to address urgent tree-related issues.
Ask the provider about their protocol for handling emergency calls, including how quickly they can dispatch a team to your location and what services they offer in emergency situations. Whether it's storm damage, fallen trees, or hazardous branches, prompt action is crucial to prevent further damage and ensure the safety of your property and loved ones. Make sure the tree service provider has the necessary resources and capabilities to handle emergency tree care effectively.
By asking about emergency services and response time upfront, you can plan ahead for unforeseen tree emergencies and have peace of mind knowing that help is just a phone call away. Prioritize tree service providers that prioritize customer safety and satisfaction by offering reliable emergency services.
Making a Final Decision and Scheduling the Tree Service
After considering all the relevant factors and conducting thorough research, it's time to make a final decision and schedule the tree service with the chosen provider. Review your notes, estimates, contracts, and any additional information gathered during the selection process to ensure that you are confident in your choice. Contact the tree service provider to confirm the details of the project and arrange a convenient date for the services.
Communicate any specific requirements, preferences, or concerns you may have regarding the tree care project to the provider to ensure a smooth and successful experience. Prepare your property by clearing access paths, moving obstacles, and securing pets or belongings that may be affected by the tree care activities. On the scheduled day, be available to oversee the work and address any questions or issues that may arise.
By making a final decision and scheduling the tree service, you are taking proactive steps to care for your trees and enhance the beauty of your landscape. Trust in the expertise and professionalism of the tree service provider you have chosen, and enjoy the benefits of well-maintained trees for years to come.
In conclusion, choosing the right tree service provider is a crucial decision that impacts the health, safety, and aesthetics of your trees and landscape. By following the steps outlined in this article, you can make an informed choice and select a reputable and professional tree care company in Lakeland FL. Rev. Dr. Cecil 'Chip' Murray was L.A.'s fixer
(News4usonline) - Rev. Dr. Cecil "Chip" Murray, an icon to the Los Angeles community during the 1992 riots, passed away at the age of 94 on April 5, 2024. He was the first pastor of the First African Methodist Episcopal Church of Los Angeles in 1977. During his time as a pastor, he transformed a small congregation of 250 into an 18,000-person church with multi-million dollar community and economic development programs that brought many jobs and housing, according to the USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture website. We are humbled and honored to continue the legacy of the Rev. Dr. Cecil L. Murray. His family has asked donations to be directed to Rev. Murray’s Circle of Support: https://t.co/D9ZLdZ2KhG. We will share the livestream for his funeral services here next week. pic.twitter.com/Udvosn5iSQ— USC Center for Religion and Civic Culture (@usccrcc) April 18, 2024 He later was appointed as the John R. Tansey Chair of Christian Ethics in the School of Religion at the University of Southern California. Dr. Anthony Asadullah Samad, who is the Executive Director of the Mervyn Dymally African American Political and Economic Institute (MDAAPEI) on the campus of California State Dominguez Hills, said Rev. Murray was a lot of things to a lot of people. “Reverend Murray was not just a icon in the Los Angeles community,” said Samad. “Not just the Black Los Angeles community, but the Los Angeles community. But he was also a personal mentor.” Samad first joined First AME Church in 1981 and when he left the church, Rev. Murray was a senior pastor at the time. The significance that Rev. Murray was that he continued the tradition of Black radical Christian theology from a church that had religious activists. “What projected First AME into the national limelight was on the day that the four police officers were pronounced not guilty, April 29, 1992,” said Samad. “Tom Bradley was holding a town hall gathering, sort of to pray for the city. And we came out of the church and the church was on fire.” California mourns the passing of Reverend Dr. Cecil Murray—a landmark civil rights activist and spiritual leader. He was a tower of strength for the Black community in Los Angeles. His impact will continue to be felt by millions for generations to come.https://t.co/wS67HnFJsc— California Governor (@CAgovernor) April 11, 2024 First AME Church became the center of the frustration and expressions of the Black community” according to Samad. However, it was not just the Black community that Rev. Murray had a direct impact on. He also reached out to the Latino and Asian communities as well. Under Rev. Murray's leadership, First AME Church grew from roughly 250 members to more than 18,000 members by the time he retired 27 years later. “Cecil Murray basically took what was a dying congregation and built it over a 28-year period,” said Samad. Rev. Murray was born on September 26, 1929, in Lakeland, Florida. He grew up in the segregated South. He graduated from Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University and then earned his PhD from the School of Theology at Claremont College. After the 1992 Los Angeles riots, Rev. Murray and First AME Church began to rebuild the L.A community. “Through a grant from State Farm, (they) built a nonprofit called L.A. Renaissance that began to build housing and build businesses and rebuild what had been destroyed in the L.A. riots of 92,” said Samad. “So first AME became the go-to location for community mobilization. And Reverend Chip Murray was that focus.” “Rev. Murray became the model for using religion and using churches to advocate for the poor,” Samad added. After Rev. Murray retired from the First AME Church after 27 years, he then began teaching his theology around social advocacy and fighting social injustice where he would teach young ministers how to use the church to address social injustices. I was honored to celebrate the distinguished career of Rev. Cecil Murray. Incredible legacy of bridging communities and uplifting our world. https://t.co/HBHXiWfMtl pic.twitter.com/aekja08DGo— Carol Folt (@PresidentFolt) September 23, 2022 He also had a center named after him, the Cecil Murray Center for Community Engagement. The center helps faith leaders to transform underserved communities. But besides being an icon to the greater Los Angeles community and being the backbone of the Black residents during a time of instability, Rev. Murray was a person with a good heart, Samad said. “He was a beautiful person, always positive. There was a lesson in every engagement with him in terms of helping people sort through differences, mitigating conflict,” Samad remarked. “He never closed the church doors when the community was trying to address an issue.” “So he was a person who basically sought to bring people together and he'll be remembered for that. He'll be remembered as a builder, as a peacemaker. Blessed are the peacemakers, so that they will inherit the earth. So that will be his legacy and his memory,” added Samad. Was Yoda a medieval monk? It takes a museum curator to tell you. Guardian Careers

Was Yoda a medieval monk? It takes a museum curator to tell you. Guardian Careers
uUntil the advent of social media, being a curator at the British Library was a lonely, outside job. In many ways it still is for Julian Harrison, curator of pre-1600 historical manuscripts. Behind the scenes he cares for priceless collections that include copies of Beowulf, some of the world’s oldest Bibles, the Lindisfarne Gospels and Henry VIII’s state papers. He currently curates exhibitions such as Magna Carta: Law, Liberty, Legacy The difference for Harrison these days is that he does it all with a virtual audience of thousands.
Harrison has worked at the British Library since 2006 “I can’t imagine how we could communicate what we do without the occasional story in the media,” he says The transition began in 2010 when the library started an experimental blog to chart the digitization of Greek manuscripts. “It was a special thing for a special audience,” he added.
This pilot project was developed at the British Library Medieval Manuscripts Blog, a vivid and illuminating account of the curator’s life. “We use it to promote what we do,” Harrison said. “A popular post explains why we don’t wear white gloves when handling manuscripts, but we also strive for a non-academic readership. Our most popular post is Knight vs Snail which shows why images of armed knights fighting snails are common in illuminated manuscripts.”
These images have proved very popular online. “People often don’t realize how beautiful illuminated manuscripts are and how technically proficient they were in the Middle Ages,” he says. Then there are pictures with a comic twist. One of Harrison’s posts is entitled Lolcats of the Middle Ages, another features a doodle figure, curiously looking like Yoda from Star Wars. The images appeal to the same online audience, Harrison noted, that enjoys watching cats play the piano on YouTube.
When Harrison took over the Medieval Manuscripts blog it had two hit readers a day. Now its record daily traffic stands at 36,000. A supports this Twitter account With 23,400 followers, and it’s clear that rather than doing a quiet, hidden job, his daily life as a curator is being presented in a new, exciting way.
“We’ve got an incredibly international readership,” Harrison said. “We have visitors in every country you can think of with the exception of Antarctica, Greenland and North Korea. We get a lot of inquiries from people who want to do the same thing as us. Many young aspiring curators. social media Certainly the dynamic has changed.
Harrison talks about the enriching effect of social media; How it allows many people a peek into a world that was previously hidden from them. And just as Harrison found an audience by chronicling the life of a curator, James Rebanks, a shepherd charting his work at Lakeland Falls, attracted a formidable social media following with daily tweets.
Rebanks has built a social media following, tweeting about his work as a shepherd. Photo: PR
Rebanks tells me he’s long wanted to write about his work as a shepherd, a job still guided by the ancient rhythms of the annual calendar. There are spring, summer lambs as he sends his flock to fall, autumn fair and winter darkness. His life is closely tied to the landscape. “It wasn’t until 1998 or 1999 that I wrote for the magazine that we [shepherds] did,” he says, “but the Twitter part was completely accidental. It started when some friends encouraged me to tweet about the farm.
He wrote his first tweet on 18 January 2012, An image of his flock in fawn green falls under a dark winter sky, it set the tone for what followed. Beautiful pictures of sheep herding through skinny northern lanes, playful shots of his college at work, snippets of rural wisdom and insight. “I was nervous,” Rebanks says. “I started anonymously and didn’t appear at all in my first 13,000 tweets There are many shy and modest people in the society. I never post pictures of people I don’t approve of.”
But soon Rebanks was attracting a following, a Twitter swarm of her own that numbered in the tens, then hundreds, and then thousands. “It took a while to get to 700 followers,” he recalls. “Then it doubled in 2014 and now it’s really taken off.”
Today Rebanks has 57,000 followers on Twitter who travel with him to the falls and back to the market. Last month she tweeted about the birth of 10 sheepdogs, Posting a video clip to Vine That has been viewed 780,000 times. All this attention has propelled him into the mainstream. His first book this month, shepherd lifePublished by Penguin. It is currently being read as a Book of the Week on BBC Radio 4.
“The reason I’m doing this is because I think we’re the forgotten people in the landscape. The Lake District is the chocolate box, the picture postcard. People forget us. What I’m really doing on Twitter is ‘we’re still here’,” Rebanks said. is about an infectious enthusiasm about what you love and sharing it with other people.”
Like Harrison, Rebanks’ success lies in opening windows into hidden worlds, an enduring attraction of social media. This is something that novelist Clare King also tried to achieve. He had not previously documented his writing life but decided to Start a blog While he was working on what would be his first novel, rainbow at night,
Her posts chart the writing process, practical tips on the novelist’s craft, and her experiences in the publishing industry. “I didn’t really expect people to listen to me because there are so many writing blogs out there,” she explains. “But it was a way to publicly state my intentions and therefore hold myself accountable.”
This regular, well-crafted mediation by a working novelist found a like-minded, engaged audience on Twitter. Raja lifts the lid on an industry that many want to break into, but has long been considered mysterious and exclusive to outsiders. Have any of his readers or followers gone on to get their own publishing deals?
“Yes, many have and I am always happy to hear and share their good news. We all need a little cheerleading in this world,” she says.

A local TV station meteorologist in Ohio was recently found severely beaten inside his house, prompting police to arrest his son and wife.
According to a report from the Bay Village Police Department, which was provided to Newsweek, the incident occurred on July 9 at around 5:40 p.m. local time. Officers with the Bay Village Police Department were dispatched to a residence in the area following reports of a man in cardiac arrest.
"Investigation revealed that the male had been seriously assaulted and was semi-unconscious and barley able to speak," the police report said. According to the police report, the victim was identified as Jon Loufman, who works as a meteorologist for WOIO news in Cleveland.
According to WEWS-TV in Cleveland when officers arrived on the scene, they began investigating the incident and were eventually able to speak with Loufman, who informed officers that he had been beaten by his son.
WOIO news reported that Loufman's son was later arrested by Bay Village Police officers. The son was identified as Daniel Loufman and he was charged with felonious assault, according to WOIO news.
According to WOIO news, the local news meteorologist's wife was also arrested following the incident this weekend. Julia Loufman was charged with obstructing justice, the Bay Village Police Department said, according to the local news station.
On Monday, both Julia and Daniel Loufman appeared before a judge following the incident and pleaded not guilty. They are currently being held on bonds of $30,000 and $1 million, respectively, WOIO news reported.
