Global Chess League Season 2: Top Chess Icons Set to Shine
The excitement is building for the second season of the Global Chess League, set to take place from October 3 to 12 at Friends House in London. This season promises a stellar lineup as chess icons Hikaru Nakamura and Anish Giri join forces with former world champions Magnus Carlsen and Viswanathan Anand, alongside other chess luminaries like Maxime Vachier-Lagrave and Ian Nepomniachtchi.
Tumblr media
Hikaru Nakamura will be representing the newest team, American Gambits, while Anish Giri makes his debut with the PBG Alaskan Knights. Nakamura expressed his enthusiasm, saying, “I followed the Global Chess League in its first season and was hooked by the format. It’s an exciting opportunity for both players and fans, allowing them to support their favorite teams. I’m thrilled to join the American Gambits and can’t wait to meet my teammates in London.”
Returning for the second season, Magnus Carlsen will continue his journey with Alpine SG Pipers. Carlsen, who competed in the league's inaugural season, shared his excitement: “The first season in Dubai was fantastic. Chess has traditionally been an individual sport, but the team-based format of the Global Chess League is refreshing. I look forward to playing with the Alpine SG Pipers again.”
Viswanathan Anand, the five-time world champion, will once again represent the Ganges Grandmasters. Anand reflected on the league’s unique approach: “The Global Chess League is a new and exciting way to organize chess, and it’s a great example of how we can innovate within traditional sports.”
Maxime Vachier-Lagrave, who led the Mumba Masters to the finals last season, will continue with the Mumbai-based franchise. Ian Nepomniachtchi, a two-time world chess championship contender, will be the icon player for the Triveni Continental Kings.
Sameer Pathak, CEO of the Global Chess League, expressed optimism about the upcoming season: “With such renowned names leading each team, we’re confident the matches will offer chess fans an incredible experience. We’ll be announcing the rest of the players for each team in the coming weeks.”
The Global Chess League, a collaborative effort between Tech Mahindra and FIDE, is set to provide a thrilling chess experience this season. Anand recently praised the league’s innovative approach, highlighting it as a refreshing Indian way of organizing sport.
As the countdown to the second season begins, chess enthusiasts around the world eagerly await the action-packed games and the opportunity to watch these iconic players in action.

[ad_1] Tata Steel Chess India Subhayan Chakraborty in Kolkata The draws for the sixth edition of the Tata Steel Chess India Rapid & Blitz were revealed in Kolkata on Tuesday. The spotlight is on Magnus Carlsen, the former chess world champion, who is set to challenge Indian teenage sensation R Praggnanandhaa in both Rapid and Blitz sections. Carlsen, a five-time world champion, returns to the tournament after his triumph in 2019. Scheduled from November 13 to 17 at the Dhono Dhanyo Auditorium in Alipore, Kolkata, the event boasts a prize pot of USD 41,500, equal for men and women. It maintains its tradition with Open and Women’s categories, each competing in Rapid and Blitz formats. Following their success at the 2024 Budapest Chess Olympiad, the Indian chess team is geared up for this prestigious tournament. In the Open section, SL Narayanan will face Germany’s Vincent Keymer, and Vidit Gujrathi will take on the USA’s Wesley So. There’s also an anticipated duel between Arjun Erigaisi and Nihal Sarin. On the Women’s side, India’s Harika Dronavalli will duel with England’s Nana Dzagnidze, while Vantika Agrawal will play Russia’s Valentina Gunina. Koneru Humpy is matched against Russia’s Kateryna Lagno. A notable moment during the event was the involvement of three-year-old chess prodigy Anish Sarkar from Kolkata, who drew the lots, setting up the game between Carlsen and Praggnanandhaa, much to the delight of those present. “It’s a great tournament. I remember Praggnanandhaa making his debut as a replacement in the first year,” Vidit told RevSportz. “Now, see where he is. Such tournaments will also highlight the kind of talent we have in this country. I am keen to see how I perform in this edition. Of course, wherever Magnus Carlsen plays, he is the biggest highlight.” Last year’s champions were Maxime Vachier Lagrave for the Rapid, and Alexander Grishchuk for the Blitz in the men’s category, with Divya Deshmukh and Ju Wenjun taking the titles in the women’s Rapid and Blitz respectively. Praggnanandhaa, when asked about Carlsen’s playing strategy, highlighted his admiration. “His determination to win, even when the game seems headed for a draw, is what I find inspiring,” he remarked. “He pushes on in situations where many would settle for a draw, and that’s something I truly appreciate.” The post Tata Steel Chess India is back, and so is Magnus Carlsen appeared first on Sports News Portal | Latest Sports Articles | Revsports.
