PLAINTEXT START ;Â
hope this is okay to add op but. not only is âfreakâ used to shame disabled, neurodivergent ( i& see this directed especially at autistic folx & plural systems ) & intersex people in the form of ableism, sanism & intersexism ( which iâve& also seen it used in aphobic, homophobic, transphobic & exorsexist contexts ), itâs also incredibly racist ( ESPECIALLY towards dark skinned people of color, including black people, africans, koreans, okinawans, moors whoâre essentially afroindigenous maghrebine berber arab muslims from north africa, tartars whoâre from central and northern asia, indians, indigenous andamanese of the andaman islands, indigenous sentinelese whoâre in voluntary isolation, turks, pasifika, notably native hawaiians, & first nations, inuit & native americans, but it was also aimed towards indigenous south americans, sĂĄmi, ainu, filipinos, indonesians, & other indigenous peoples around the world who were victims of these human zoos where poc were seen as primitive & âexoticâ ), dwarfmisic, giantmisic & albinomisic ( if thatâs. even a word. idk. ) because little people, giants, hunchbacks & albino people were also seen as abnormal.
basically âfreak showsâ or âcreep showsâ were designed for disabled people most of all, where people who were very small, tall, large or with other visible differences or impairments or deformities or people who were seen by white supremacist society as âotherâ were put on display for the public gaze in the 17th, 18th & 19th centuries and sometimes even in the modern day, it literally means âstrange or abnormalâ. those with extraordinary diseases and conditions, people who appeared nonwhite or who had a disability were often exhibited as unknown races and cultures, as well as nonwhite people being portrayed as savages and cannibals. these âunknownâ races and disabled whites were advertised as being undiscovered humans to attract viewers, those who were armless, legless, or limbless were also characterized in the exotic mode as âanimal-peopleâ. so basically whether or not you want to believe it both freak show and human zoo culture normalized a specific way of thinking about gender, race, sexual aberrance, ethnicity, and disability. these displays emphasized the supposed inferiority of the exhibitsâ cultures, and implied the superiority of âwestern societyâ, through tropes that purported marginalized groups as âsavageâ. the idea of a âsavageâ derives from columbusâs voyages that deemed western white european culture remained pure, while other cultures were titled impure or âwildâ, and this stereotype relied heavily on the idea that different ways of living were âcast out by Godâ, as other cultures do not recognize christianity in relation to creation.
throughout their existence such exhibitions garnered controversy over their demeaning, derogatory, and dehumanizing nature, they began as a part of circuses and âfreak showsâ which displayed exotic humans in a manner akin to a caricature which exaggerated their differences. they then developed into independent displays emphasizing the exhibitsâ inferiority to western culture and providing further justification for their subjugation. such displays featured in multiple worldâs fairs and at temporary exhibitions in animal zoos. yes, these people were literally put side by side by animals. one imperialist view of the whole non-Western world portrayed it as a vast animal park in which whites could function as zookeepersâmanagers of the indigenous human and nonhuman inhabitants. not only that, but âhuman zoosâ also used heavy racist stereotyping, & projecting western superiority & greater feeding into the imperialist narrative, that these peopleâs cultures merited subjugation, it also promoted cultural appropriation, scientific racism, romantic racism, primitivism, orientalism & racial fetishism where they were classified as more or less âcivilizedâ on a scale, from great apes to western europeans. itâs overall genuinely disgusting.
not only this but human zoos and freakshows often had sexual abuse normalized therein which led to the objectification of women of color and to a lesser extent men of color. these objectifications often led to treatment that reflected a lack of privacy and respect, including the dissection and display of bodies after death without consent. a black woman, sarah bartmann, was displayed both when she was alive throughout england and ireland and after her death in the musĂ©e de l'homme. while alive, she participated in a traveling show depicting her as a âsavage femaleâ with a large focus on her body. the clothes she was put in were tight and close to her skin color, and spectators were encouraged to âsee for themselvesâ if bartmannâs body was real through âpoking and pushingâ and while her living display was financially compensated there is no record of her consenting to be examined and displayed after death. there was a man where upon his death in 1796, his body being âstuffed and exhibited in the viennese natural history museumâ for almost a decade. furthermore, many of these shows had bands that were made up of black musicians, blackface minstrel bands & troupes of dancers dressed as hawaiians so they also profited off of antiblack racism and anti-indigenous racism & cultural appropriation.
this should not be used casually ( unless if you reclaim it for yourself or something like that ) because it also implies that these human beings with lives & feelings of their own are but dehumanized objects of fear and horror & that simply isnât true, so even if youâre queer, if youâre abled and/or neurotypical, please for the love of g-d donât EVER use this to insult someone, especially not towards a disabled and/or mentally ill individual, even moreso if theyâre a system, that is a disgusting word that should never be used to dehumanize someone else bc i& have seen this go around even in queer circles & not hearing themselves being blissfully ignorant about their own bs.
so. anyway. iâm& practically spiritually shaking the shit out of the mogai/liom community by the collar - especially white queers who donât know anything about this history - as a disabled neurodivergent intersex & mixed native bodied system to please use this shit with caution; itâs not something to be played around with like itâs a toy & please for the love of g-d have some fucking compassion. itâs one thing to not know something but now that you know donât go around whining if and/or when poc, disabled & neurodivergent folx - especially systems of color - get upset with you. if this sounds like iâm& angry, thatâs because i& am because iâm&. tired of people throwing this around & insulting others with this damn slur.
; PLAINTEXT END
hey, this is all /not mad, but could people please start tagging genders that use âfreakâ, such as -freak genders as something such as âfr slurâ, or (preferably) try to find alternative wording?
freak is an ableist and intersexist slur, and itâs honestly rather triggering to me and others i know. please correctly trigger tag it if you must use it, thank you
(im suggesting âfr slurâ instead of âf slurâ since the latter is commonly used to tw for the queer targeted f slur)

Hereâs some positivity for indigenous systems!
We are not indigenous, and we currently live on stolen Cherokee land. You can learn whose land you live on too, at native-land.ca !
This post was sensitivity read and co-written by Arcana of @ladyimaginarium . Please check them& out and give them& a follow! And to Arcana, we canât thank you& enough for your& time, energy, and the loving care you& have put into this post!

This past week was the National Week of Action for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Girls, Women and Two2 Spirit People in Canada and the United States! Indigenous peoples are said to make up about 5% of the global population. In defense of our indigenous peoples in the Americas from Canada to Chile to the Amazon to the Andes and everywhere on our continents, Europeans killed 70 to 100 million of our people. 95% of us. We are survivors of genocide for over 500 years and we will outlive our oppressors. This post is in celebration of indigenous systems everywhere!

Shoutout to indigenous systems who formed due to their culture, spiritual beliefs, or religion! Donât let nonnatives tell you that your origins arenât real, theyâre racist and donât know anything!

Shoutout to indigenous systems who love the finer things in life and want to make a better life for themselves, youâre not any less Native for being into fancy things!

Shoutout to indigenous systems who are multiple ethnicities, who are the children who grew up in mixed, interracial and/or interfaith families who are always being told to choose between different heritages to fit into spaces, you are whole and beautiful just the way you are!
Shoutout to indigenous systems who donât practice their traditional beliefs and are instead Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Shinto, Pagan, Satanist, Agnostic or even Atheist! That doesnât make you any less Indigenous!

Shoutout to indigenous systems with low blood quantum, I promise you, as long as you do your best to reconnect, you are Native enough and you have every right to reclaim whatâs yours in any way you can and itâs not your fault this colonialist system placed upon you by our oppressors wonât allow you to enroll or be a more active member of the community!
Shoutout to indigenous systems where they donât âlookâ Native, whether itâs because they look like another race, or because they wear a hijab or a tichel, or they have vitiligo or albino, or they have blonde or red hair or green or blue eyes, that doesnât make you less Native!
Shoutout to indigenous systems who donât feel seen or heard and feel invisible and like an afterthought, even in POC spaces, your feelings of frustration and anger are valid and white systems and nonnative systems of color need to do better in including our voices and not contribute to native erasure which is painfully common for us!
Shoutout to indigenous systems who are fullblooded Indigenous and were born and raised and are completely connected to their cultures and can speak their indigenous languages!
Shoutout to indigenous systems whoâre disconnected, displaced and/or forcibly assimilated!
Shoutout to indigenous systems that are not federally recognized, who donât have a status card and are unlikely to be enrolled, have been disenrolled and those that cannot be enrolled due to their nation using blood quantum, you do not need anyone to validate you and you do not need to be enrolled let alone have a status card to be indigenous, we see and love you.
Shoutout to indigenous systems whoâs tribes are lesser known or donât exist anymore!

Shoutout to indigenous systems whoâre in academia, your knowledge is valuable and together we rebuild nations!
Shoutout to indigenous systems whoâre dealing with substance abuse disorders, we see you and love you!

We can have any skintone, hair type, hair color, eye color, shape or size, there is no âone Native lookâ! Youâre not âtoo muchâ or âtoo littleâ, colonial violence is a poison, you are whole and complete on your own, you are not fractions, and each and every part of you and your heritage is important. Your ancestors see you and love you just the way you are and are so very proud of you for remembering them! We are all connected to each other as family, we all have Mother Earth in the core of our beliefs despite our differences, and no one can take your indigeneity away from you!

oh, katniss. she has never seen a young victor with such raw talent and beauty look so pained in a public setting. effie, on the other hand, is every bit in her element. she's been flitting around all evening in a statement dress of bright blue, charming the room full of familiar faces without so much as batting an eye ââ always with a clear view of her victors. she floats toward the two of them with a drink in hand, making sure to shoot peeta ââ who has at least attempted to strike up some conversation ââ an encouraging glance. adding these tags via @ladyimaginarium because i've somehow never heard of this book wow?? and i've previously had a hard time finding any info on Mi'kmaw-specific two spirit identity. i'll definitely be checking it out asapâ it's called Mi'kmaq Puoniaq Two Spirit Medicine: Sexuality and Gender Variance, Spirituality and Culture by Dr. Joseph Randolph Bowers and Dr. Daniel N. Paul. !!!!
i'm not really good at posts but i'd like to leave this in memory of Mi'kmaw elder and author Daniel Paul who passed away last month.
his book We Were Not the Savages is an incredibly detailed, researched, and impactful book on Mi'kmaq history, pre- and post-european contact and to the present day, including his personal experiences at the Schubenacadie Indian day school. i really don't have the words to express how important he and this book have been but it's really something to check out.

Disclaimer banners for @ladyimaginarium!
[ID: two similar banners, which feature two colors (one dark and one light) each alongside white and black. Both have two sections â the one to the left shows a white outline of Emmengard's Plural Rings behind the treble clef, which is in the darker color of its banner with a black drop shadow around it, and the one to the right has text specific to each banner. The top banner, colored in lilac and dark purple, reads: "This post is based on a fictive's exomemories; do not tag this post as headcanons, kin, or D/A." The bottom banner, colored in tan and brown, reads: "This post is not about roleplay, don't treat it as such."
Hope this works for you! And in response to the other person who requested disclaimer banners â we're terribly sorry, but we can't add patterns to banners at this time.
