currently doing a bunch of wiz lore research for oc reasons but i like it when my ocs are just. silly. random facts that serve zero purpose whatsoever
rn it is about a bunch of creatures in wiz and im thinking. seraphs. hmm yea (<- is trying to work on my ocs' powers/abilities outside of game mechanics spellcasting)
i know althea had to sacrifice a lot of her power in order to reincarnate two very powerful gods as mortals (erin and quinn) (also sacrifice her time. she has two dragon children trashing the house now) so i imagine she's sisters with lady oriel and passed down the role of "princess of the seraphs" to her.. also want more lady oriel content
anyways she's like erin and quinn's aunt now and i giggle to myself thinking about how when quinn ends up on unicorn way trying to save it he keeps getting frustrated with trying to figure out how wands and cards work and would rather just cause a giant hailstorm in his dragon form, (which would destroy the whole street) and oriel has to babysit this very chaotic child
erin comes in and oriel cannot keep her hedge maze in peace because the two are running around like tiny rats as baby dragons and scaring away all the fairies. unicorn way has a new problem now and it's not the undead this time
atm im also trying to make a phoenix and leviathan oc too, and they're pirates.... ill be back with an update on this one in like 72 years
#txt#oc#oc: althea#oc: erin#oc: quinn#lady sylvan is there too she has fo be#shes like the aunt that enables the both of them#also quinn being an ice student is. Yeah. lady oriel shows up in the frost giant quest and remarks how much the wizard has grown#thatll make me sob

Love how "Darkness" and "Death" are different from each other with Lady Oriel. She says she can see the Light in me even though I'm a necromancer, and Rattlebones is shrouded in Darkness, but he also uses Death magic.
And today I learned Ceren's name is pronounced "See-rehn" not "Sair-ehn".

ALRIGHT, since Halloween is just around the corner and this blog is ALSO about sharing and talking about my full-time hyperfixation (music), I want to make some recommendations of "unusual" or just unknown songs that very well fit the theme! I've mentioned before that I love making thematic playlists and that I have rules for them everything (it's serious shit!!), so I wanna share some of the songs featured in my "Ecclectic Halloween" playlist. The two basic rules I applied for that playlist are:
The song MUST include anything supernatural, spooky, bizarre, "murder/serial killer", classic creature and so on
The song can be of ANY genre; is it metal? Prog? Disco? Electronic? Soundtrack? COOL, ALL ARE WELCOME!
Let's get started!
1 - Rainbow - Tarot Woman
youtube
As an unapologetic 70s dad rock advocate, I HAVE to start with one of my fave bands of the genre! The song begins with a DOPE synth/keyboard solo, and then iconic Dio (the one Dio from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure was named after) comes in with a bunch of cryptic imagery, like the predictions the tarot woman is telling him as she turns the cards side on:
Something in the air Tells me to beware - No, no, no! Her love is like a knife She'll carve away your life - So go, go, go! Beware of a place, a smile on a bright shiny face I'll never return, how do you know? Tarot woman! But I don't know, I don't know!
2 - Blackmore's Night - I Guess It Doesn't Matter Anymore
youtube
From the same breed of the first song, cause Blackmore was the guitar player / composer for Rainbow - except that Blackmore's Night is a project he made way later (late 90s), with his wife Candice Night, who sings all the songs and composes with him. This song is about the CLASSIC tale of someone giving a lift to a mysterious woman they found wandering at the side of the road; when they get to the place she wanted to go and asks to leave, the driver turns around! And the lady, she's suddenly gone!!!!!
Standing in the rain, the cold and angry rain In a long white dress, a girl without a name She stood beneath the light, Glowing like a candle bright I guess it doesn't matter anymore (...) Finally she spoke, 'come pull off the road' Saying she was headin' home I turned and she was gone, I was all alone
3- Loreena McKennitt - The Bonny Swans
youtube
You might be asking: "Oriel, what the fuck, why is soft spoken-christmas songs-traditional folk medieval instruments Loreena McKennitt in this playlist at all??? With a song named like THAT?? What is so scary about pretty glorified ducks anyway?" - And to that I'll say right off the bat this is the most metal song in the entire playlist, and I say this unironically. This song is inspired by an old ballad and it tells about a girl who was drowned by her own sister out of jealousy of her betrothed; the sister kills her so she can have the lad for herself. It already has murder, as you can tell - but it gets WORSE, as the body of the drowned girl floats down the river and is found by a miller's daughter; a passing-by bard then uses the dead girl's bones and golden hair to make a harp that plays on it's own, possessed by the dead girl's spirit???? She (as the harp) asks to be taken to the court, the bard takes her, and AS A CURSED HARP MADE OF BONES the dead girl outs her sister as her murderer, in front of the entire family and the court. Look. If this isn't METAL AF, I don't know what ELSE can be. The "bonny swans" from the title comes from the comparison Loreena makes of the pale girl's body floating in the water, to swans swimming along. kkkkkkkkkkk JESUS.
He made harp pins of her fingers fair With a hey ho and a bonny o He made harp strings of her golden hair The swans swim so bonny o He made a harp of her breast bone With a hey ho and a bonny o And straight it began to play alone The swans swim so bonny o He brought it to her father's hall With a hey ho and a bonny o And there was the court, assembled all The swans swim so bonny o He laid the harp upon a stone With a hey ho and a bonny o And straight it began to play lone The swans swim so bonny o
4- Sting - Moon Over Bourbon Street
youtube
Probably one of the most fun songs in this, because it's a song written by Sting, inspired by Anne Rice's "Interview With the Vampire"! The song is under Louis' PoV, and he laments his current condition as a vampire and also as a man of god, as he wanders through New Orleans's streets. This Sting's live performance of this song (the live in Berlin, 2010) is my favorite by far - there's a whole ass epic orchestra and even a theremin! hehe
I pray everyday to be strong For I know what I do must be wrong Oh you'll never see my shade or hear the sound of my feet While there's a moon over Bourbon Street It was many years ago that I became what I am I was trapped in this life like an innocent lamb Now I can never show my face at noon And you'll only see me walking by the light of the moon
5- AQUA - Halloween
youtube
Yes, THAT AQUA - turns out they DO have more songs other than Barbie Girl, and they actually slap - I was there in the 90s, when the Deep Eurodance Magic was written. I LOVE this one because it has such a fun vibe, and obviously, inspired by the "Halloween" movie franchise - Lene plays as the girl alone at night who receives a call from René, playing as the psycho who's after her. They even act that scene at the begining of the song dsjfhjsdgf so cool!
The sound of shoes, a shadow that moves Something odd is tic tac ticking Someone's in here, I'm so full of fear The telephone is ringing!!
6- E Nomine - Das Tier In Mir
youtube
ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVES IN THIS PLAYLIST. E Nomine was (?) a German electronic music project who DARED to mix in dark techno/trance beats AND CHANTS IN LATIN, as this deep-voiced dude sings/borderline-raps in German. ITS HARD TO EXPLAIN, BUT I PROMISE, ITS SO SO SO DOPE. They also sang about all sorts of religious / dark fantasy themes - they have an entire album based on the Bible, which I promise, they made it a LOT MORE RAD AND COOL than it sounds; and another album about the supernatural and all kinds of creatures, like vampires, ghosts, werewolves, demons. "Das Tier in Mir" or "The Animal In Me" is their "werewolf" song - it starts off with this kid singing in Latin about the forest, and the moonlight, and the song goes on with Deep Voice Dude singing under the werewolf's perspective; it even features a dramatic transformation sequence!!
[Latin]The forest is hidden, in the moonlight, My home is the forest In the starlight (...) Dark clouds and dark thoughts, The full-moon night smashes my barriers down. The animal desire that I massacre comes in me. I feel this bloodlust here and now. Deep in the night the twinkling stars, A sweet smell is drawing me into the distance. But careful if my passion gets aroused quite gently in the night And the hunter wakes up in me! (Translation from here - it's rather clunky, but that's the gist of it!)
7- E Nomine - Mitternacht
youtube
Yep! Another one by E Nomine, BECAUSE THEY JUST SLAP TOO HARD. "Mitternacht", or "Midnight" is pretty much about the Witching Hour, all the spirits comes out when the bell strikes midnight!! This one is SUCH A FAVORITE of mine because it sounds EXACTLY what a DJ would play as vampires dressed in fancy, old outfits and masks waltz around in a haunted, opulent manor
When the gondolas are in mourning and the dead's lament resounds horror is breathing down your neck When the clock starts striking cold thick fog is touching you gently ...midnight! [Latin] midnight, dark night, cruelty of the soul the bell is ringing twelve times ...midnight! (Translation from here - same from previous song, kinda clunky but we get it)
8- Dead or Alive - Something In My House
youtube
Another classic banger with the catchiest fucking tune ever, by You-Spin-Me-Right-Round-Baby-Right-Round Dead or Alive, sung by ICONIC genderfucker wizard Pete Burns (the Gender Envy of him in this video is real). I have to admit, this one is SLIGHTLY cheating on my rules, cause the "something in my house" in question is not anything supernatural - it's a metaphor for a gone-wrong relationship, lol. Ngl, I think this is kinda fucking brilliant. But like, the spooky, Halloween-y vibes are all there nonetheless: wolves are howling, Pete is singing in an old castle and looking 200% like a vampire. Even if I'm cheating a little, it still fits!
There is something in my house - my house, It's just a ghost of a long long dead affair, There is something in my house - my house, I just keep a hearing you runnin' on up my stairs, But you're not there
9- League of Legends - Fiddlesticks, The Harbinger of Doom
youtube
Finally, some soundtracks! I don't play LoL, but I absolutely love some of the character's themes, and Fiddlestick's is one of them! For what I've got, Fiddlesticks is like this ancient, nightmare-ish Freddie Krugger-like entity, and BOY, does the song reflect exactly THAT. It SOUNDS like a horror movie, and I'm obsessed about it!!
When fields lie calm and wind stands still (Run home, run home) As the crows make night of the fading Sun (Hide now, hide now) When the trees do bow, as if they weep (Stay down, stay down) Though its light beckons forth, a melody calls out (Too late, too late)
10- The Alan Parson's Project - The Cask of Amontillado
youtube
And!!! Last but not least!! Closing this playlist with THIS ULTIMATE DAD PROG ROCK BANGER, which as you can see, is inspired by Poe's tale "The Cask of Amontillado". In fact, the entire album where that song comes from, "Tales of Mystery and Imagination - Edgar Allan Poe", is inspired by his work. Yeah there are also songs on "The Raven" and "The Fall of the House of Usher" too for example! It's just so cool! But "The Cask of Amontillado" is by far my favorite, specially with the instrumental part at the end, ughhhh <3
By the last breath of the four winds that blow I'll have revenge upon Fortunato Smile in his face I'll say "come let us go I've a cask of Amontillado" (...) You who are rich and whose troubles are few May come around to see my point of view What price the Crown of a King on his throne When you're chained in the dark all alone
This is definitely a long ass post, and I really had to cut it even shorter bc of Tumblr's dumbass video limit, but that's alright. I might even put up a part II, hehe I hope you like the Halloween-y songs recs!!

Very important question: Based on his canonical age and class background, is Tom Riddle Sr. a Drones Club member?
My unhinged ship: Since Luna is extremely Madeline Basset-coded, and best shipped with older men, Luna/Grindlewald (the best analog I could think of for Roderick Spode, whom she marries in the TV adaptation).
(Whereas Neville is definitely Gussie Fink-Nottle-coded).
i cackled.
yes. tom sr. is one hundo a drones club member. the assembled members call him "croaker" - after the avian specimen in that famous riddle, "why is a raven like a writing desk?"
he and bertie wooster were clearly at eton together and had a minor rivalry which continued at oxford when tom [oriel] beat bertie [magdalen] to the lowest pass-mark in the year. bertie regards tom as a bit weak in the top storey, and is very much of the opinion that if he had a jeeves of his own he'd never have got into all that gaunt mess. he is correct in this assessment.
and i am unavoidably compelled to back the idea of gellert grindelwald/luna lovegood - and, all the more importantly, to back the idea of grindelwald as a secret entrepreneur in the realm of ladies' undergarments. the entire plot of the code of the woosters - with, i think, ron in the bertie "suspected of stealing a cow-creamer" wooster role and neville, as you say, in the gussie "my word, have you seen grindelwald eating asparagus?" fink-nottle role - would slap when transported to the harry potter universe.
i beg someone to write it.

Lady April is furious.
Her petition to the King earlier did not go well. He held her by the hips firmly, sensually, and listened to her pleas. He then replied firmly that she shouldn't have told Rowan she was ending things with their marriage.
The next part was devastating. Oriel said he could not promise her the legitimacy of their son to become Praaven's rightful Heir.
The children he had with Queen Evie are next in line to the throne, despite him unknowingly impregnating Prilly before they were born.
They were born of Royal Wedlock. Prilly and his kids is a recognised bastard at best.
Later that night she raids her dead aunt's wardrobe for that signature outfit the King really loved. She creeps down to the Main Hall and slams herself down on Oriel's grand throne, in defiance.
Her son WILL be King one day, and then she will be the King's Mother. As it should be!

WIZARD101 LORE FILES - THE SCHOOL OF LIFE
In my thirst for more Wizard101 lore, I've been compiling a heck load of information about various things and it's frankly become a mess. One of my first endeavors was to find resources about the Schools of Magic. This first rabbit-hole was about the School of Life. As a disclaimer, my main school is not Life, it is actually Balance. However, I've recently made a Life wizard and wanted to scrape the barrel for lore that I could potentially use for their story.
This is a working "document", and is separated into 4 sections:
I. Information given from the game
II. Theories
III. My own ideas
IV. Sources
Things will be updated as I find more stuff or if I have more ideas (which I definitely will).
I. INFORMATION GIVEN FROM THE GAME
From the official Wizard101 website, the School of Life is described as follows:
“Life is spirit, the force of awareness and existence. It is about constant growth and movement. Practitioners of Life Magic, known as Theurgists, are positive, enthusiastic people who seek to appreciate the simple pleasures. At times, however, they can be too flighty or frivolous when circumstances demand otherwise. Theurgists use Songs to breathe life and spirit into a vessel. Unlike other magic, which relies on summoning, coercing, or beseeching, Life Magic harnesses the power of the Song of Creation to create something new. Scholars believe that Theurgy channels the tapestry of music from which the Spiral was created, and that in echoing portions of the great symphony, a Wizard can bring forth and create Life where none previously existed.
Life Magic rests between Fire and Storm, for the spark of Life comes from those two forces.”
And I believe this is from when you first pick Life as your school:
“The Life School will train its student wizards to heal themselves and other players. Life Wizards are given the ability to heal themselves the most effectively, as well as the unique ability to heal other players. Combined with this, they do low to moderate damage attack spells with extremely high accuracy rates. They also possess the sole group heal spells.
Life Wizards are often Social, Charming, Funny and Spiritual. Famous Theurgists include Queen Titania, Leonardo DaVinci, and Thomas Jefferson. Life Wizards are great at healing themselves and others.”
From the History of Life Magic:
“Life Magic was said to have been discovered by the earliest inhabitants of Ravenwood, guided by none other than Grandfather Tree himself. He instructed his early disciples to plant trees and tend to a grove to learn the complex interactions of all living things. As these early Theurges advanced in their studies, so too did their gardens improve, eventually sprouting the sentient Spell Trees. Not just of Life Magic, but all of the Schools. Each tree embodied a new form of magic, a new aspect of existence. It was through their growth, study, and teaching that Magical Law was tested, explored, and codified.”
From one of the Life School Quests:
Moolinda Wu: “Music is the language of Life. When we sing, our Songs can take form, and with each new Song, a spirit is born! Imps, Pixies, Sprites… the Fairy spirits are the essence of Music.”
Lady Oriel: “Greetings, little one. I am Lady Oriel, Princess of the Seraphs. We are the Guardians of Life. We protect the Song of the Universe and seek out those who will help us keep our World alive.”
The Rota of Reading:
“Summer is coming in. Loudly sing, Cuckoo! The seed grows and the meadow blooms, and the woods spring anew!”
II. THEORIES
Life Magic is, in my opinion, the School of Music. Their symphonies and their songs uplift organisms and give them the courage to grow. Theurgists breathe vigor into others and are strong in their convictions. Movement and change are the tunes they dance to, proving time and time again that it is difficult for them to remain stagnant.
The History of Life Magic states that Life Magic was discovered by some of the earliest inhabitants of Ravenwood. While I believe this to be true for the world of Wizard City itself, I believe that Life Magic, whether spoken of in a different font, existed in the Spiral. This is based off the running theory I have that every living thing is made of magic, that all one must do is channel what they have within in order to wield it. Older worlds such as Azteca would apply here.
Throughout the story of Azteca you’ll read that many Aztecasaurs say they heard the Song of Creation, which is directly tied to Life Magic. Perhaps they formed their own version of Life Magic? We truly don’t know. Maybe the “earliest inhabitants” of Ravenwood were from Azteca? Or at least knew a shred of the teachings and influences of that world? Again, we don’t know. There’s a reason why this section is called “theories”.
Another interesting part of the lore is that the School trees were first sprouted by none other than the newly formed disciples of Life Magic. This seems to supplement my theory mentioned above. Furthermore, at the epicenter of each School tree is Life Magic. Many things come back to Life Magic. However, did they also create Niles, the Balance tree? Who is not in Ravenwood, but in Krokotopia?
Moolinda Wu says that music is the language of Life. This has me thinking that perhaps the Theurgists best weapon is not a staff but a musical weapon. In the game we have flutes and guitars of many shapes and colors. Ocarinas would be viable for Theurgists as well. In one of the first Life quests, you make a flute from Blossom’s branches.
Life Magic also reminds me much of White Mages from the Final Fantasy Series. See here:
“Conjury is an art that takes life and the living for its domain. Its primary purpose is the salving of hurts and the granting of protection. Adventurers such as yourself oft stand upon the front lines of battle. Owing to this, you are like to find yourself in many situations wherein a capacity for healing would be advantageous. Mind you, there is more to conjury than that. By harnessing the power of earth, wind, and water, conjurers are also capable of weaving spells that wreak havoc. In terms of sheer destructive power, conjury may pale in comparison to thaumaturgy, but its capacity to defend one against aggression more than compensates for this relative shortcoming.” – E-Sumi-Yan
Theurgists should want themselves to be known and have the uniqueness to stand out from a crowd. Their songs should be used to not only heal but to draw attention and command. Generals, leaders, commanders, and the like can utilize Life Magic in this way.
Here’s another part of conjury that I find interesting:
“Conjury calls upon the elements of earth, wind, and water and concentrates them to a potency at which spells can be weaved. Through practiced meditation on the essences of creation, conjurers draw forth and absorb aether from their immediate surroundings. A wand or cane made from unworked wood is then utilized to focus the aether until it manifests as the desired spell. Versed also in magicks that restore and strengthen, conjurers are regarded as accomplished healers.”
Life Magic, through Songs, can be similar to Conjury in that it can bring together Fire and Storm magic and blend them to a point where Life is sparked, where certain spells can be achieved. Note that while Conjurers/White Mages in FFXIV draw their power from the surrounding aether, it is not the same as Theurgists in Wizard101. Theurgists use the power they have within them to put into their Songs. However, like Conjury, it can be theorized that the best Life weapon is not only a musical instrument, but one made of a certain wood. This wood could be different for the specific Theurgist.
III. MY OWN IDEAS
This section will be the section that is most edited. I will make sure to provide changelogs at the beginning of this post.
IDEA ONE - To begin, I had this idea of a potential fairy world that existed in the Spiral. Recall that Moolinda Wu says that spirits are born from Songs. Specific spirits include Imps, Pixies, Sprites, Fairies, etc… There could be a world based off of this! A magical, whimsical world, perhaps one that’s sort of bug-like in nature. This “fairy world” would be the antithesis of Khrysalis. Furthermore, my idea was that this world would’ve been part of Khrysalis before being separated in some way.
The fairy world would feature a story based off of A Midsummer Nights’ Dream, maybe from a different point of view, or with another plot element added in.
IDEA TWO – Many Theurgists have some sort of Imp, Pixie, or Fairy ancestor in their lineage. Because of this, they are shorter individuals with more dainty features, and pointed ears. They are shorter than other Wizards, and depending on how closely tied they are to their spiritual family, could even have wings.
IDEA THREE – Theurgists have a natural green thumb, whether they choose to admit it or not. It is up to them if they wish to pursue an agricultural hobby, but the more they practice Life Magic the better. These individuals, with time and practice, are able to communicate with surrounding flora and fauna. I believe it is much like how some people in FFXIV’s setting can talk to the elemental sprites that are most prevalent in The Black Shroud and other settings. While some can distinctly make out words and sentences, most people who can communicate with the elemental sprites are only capable of feeling their emotions.

THE DESCRIPTION OF SAINT JOHN HENRY NEWMAN The Patron of the Personal Ordinariate of Our Lady of Walsingham in England and Wales Feast Day: October 9
John Henry Newman, the 19th-century's most important English-speaking Catholic theologian, spent the first half of his life as an Anglican and the second half as a Roman Catholic. He was a priest, popular preacher, writer, and eminent theologian in both churches.
Born in London, England, he studied at Oxford's Trinity College, was a tutor at Oriel College, and for 17 years was vicar of the university church, St. Mary the Virgin. He eventually published eight volumes of Parochial and Plain Sermons as well as two novels. His poem, 'Dream of Gerontius,' was set to music by Sir Edward Elgar.
After 1833, Newman was a prominent member of the Oxford Movement, which emphasized the Church’s debt to the Church Fathers and challenged any tendency to consider truth as completely subjective.
Historical research made Newman suspect that the Roman Catholic Church was in closest continuity with the Church that Jesus established. In 1845, he was received into full communion as a Catholic. Two years later he was ordained a Catholic priest in Rome and joined the Congregation of the Oratory, founded three centuries earlier by Saint Philip Neri. Returning to England, Newman founded Oratory houses in Birmingham and London and for seven years served as rector of the Catholic University of Ireland.
Before Newman, Catholic theology tended to ignore history, preferring instead to draw deductions from first principles—much as plane geometry does. After Newman, the lived experience of believers was recognized as a key part of theological reflection.
Newman eventually wrote 40 books and 21,000 letters that survive. Most famous are his book-length Essay on the Development of Christian Doctrine, On Consulting the Faithful in Matters of Doctrine, Apologia Pro Vita Sua—his spiritual autobiography up to 1864—and Essay on the Grammar of Assent. He accepted Vatican I's teaching on papal infallibility while noting its limits, which many people who favored that definition were reluctant to do.
When Newman was named a cardinal in 1879, he took as his motto 'Cor ad cor loquitur'—'Heart speaks to heart.'
He was buried in Rednal 11 years later. After his grave was exhumed in 2008, a new tomb was prepared at the Oratory church in Birmingham.
Three years after Newman died, a Newman Club for Catholic students began at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. In time, his name was linked to ministry centers at many public and private colleges and universities in the United States.
In 2010, Pope Benedict XVI beatified Newman in London. Benedict noted Newman's emphasis on the vital place of revealed religion in civilized society, but also praised his pastoral zeal for the sick, the poor, the bereaved, and those in prison. Pope Francis canonized Newman in October 2019.

Three weeks after Darkmoor, the wizard has thrown themself fully back into the rebuild efforts in Dragonspyre. In all honesty there is not much building left to be done. Regina has done her work thouroughly and spectacularly, the school halls have been revitalized, the central commons area is free of obsidian and sulfur, student housing is very nearly complete.
So the wizard is doing rounds for other necessities. Creating a teleport hub like the one in the Basilica, with direct transport to the library, the Drake hatching nest, and the Great Spire. The Spire portal is mostly to keep a continued eye on the sleeping Dragon Titan, but once or twice they’ve seen the death students vanish through it for hours at a time. They don’t ask. They don’t really need to.
“You seem tired, my friend.” Sometimes the ghosts are too perceptive for their own good.
“I’m fine, Balthazar.” The wizard replies, robotic and empty as they flip through the recipe sheets in their hands. “There’s just a lot to be done.”
“I am sure, but rest is important for those of us who still rely on a physical body. The feat you and your friends have achieved is monumental, do not do it a disservice with your exhaustion.”
They huff softly in response, “The credit should go to the rest of the Ravenwood students rather than me. I was away for most of it.” A pause, folding the recipes and tucking them away. “Thank you for these, I was missing a few.”
“Of course, my friend.”
It’s not just the ghosts of course.
Every now and then people will stop them, send them away, tell them to rest when they notice that the wizard has been up and around for more than a few days at a time. Malorn and Penny most often and hardest to brush off, but others too, Ceren, Suzie, even Nolan stopped them once to say they should at least sit down a while.
They don’t mention that there are other reasons for their near constant wakefulness. It’s not just the need to escape being alone with their thoughts. No, though that is a constant, their main concern is that since returning from Darkmoor—
Nobody has seen Duncan Grimwater.
The other students share their concern (as best they can without knowing the whole story) the death students and the Gryphonbane’s in particular. They have brought this to the attention of any power that seems reasonable to bring it to, all the professors are aware, Sergent Muldoon was kind enough to notify the city guard that he was missing, they even went back to speak with the street heads, Lady Oriel, Prince Alicane, General Akilles, gods they even trounced Prince Gobblestone again just to ask the King.
Nobody has seen nor heard from Duncan.
And they cannot seem to get Headmaster Ambrose to care.
The conversation with him is steel seething through their mind. Still leeching anger and frustration out. He is probably in mourning. I am sure he will turn up soon. Best to focus on your own studies.
Every week they return to Wizard City—courtesy of Baldur and his ship (which, with some help from the Wizard and Regina, has been reinforced to withstand the sweltering heat of the Dragonspyre skies). Every week they make the rounds to check in. Every week there is no news.
They think about Duncan, alone after the final death of his professor and mentor, alone and newly touched by Shadow. They think about the Eclipse Tower. About the Hive and the Pit. They hope Duncan is smart enough not to push those powers, hopes seeing what happened to them was enough to scare him away from it. But they don’t really believe that’s true.
Maybe he’s better at figuring things out alone than they are.
Regardless.
Weeks pass.
No news.
The restoration the the Dragonspyre Academy of Magic is reaching completion.
The trees all have faces, young but speaking.
Phyll the Life Tree is the most talkative, the others tire quickly still. Sabrina assured everyone that this would change as the trees matured. Ashley seems happy to have company that isn’t Corpus. And Corpus, to his credit, seems in slightly better spirits.
“We have three empty school buildings left,” Regina says to the group now sitting in what was once—and is again—the Dean’s office. “I think it might be nice to institute a proper Balance classroom, since as of now, the only one is in Krokotopia.”
The group here consists of the wizard, Suzie, Ceren, Penny, and Marla.
“If you two—” Regina nods to Ceren and the wizard, “—can put together a planter box that will host a sapling from Niles, and maybe talk to Alhazared about potential curricula—”
It’s a little funny, the wizard thinks.
All of them students still—though young adults—part of Ravenwood, putting together an academy that does not belong to them.
Or maybe at this point, it does.
Suzie has already volunteered to be the Duelmaster for the academy, and Marla heads monstrology research along with assisting Milos at the library.
It’s become a sort of unspoken understanding.
That all of them want the Academy to be open again, to be an option for magical learning that extends open arms to the whole Spiral.
It’s nice.
Having a goal that isn’t world ending.
“One of the extra buildings,” the wizard says softly, eyes on their hands where they clasp atop the table. “I’d like to have a place for the Astral Schools here—they’re considered a lost art to so many, I think…I think it would be nice if they could be taught again, alongside everything else.”
“I’d love to learn Moon magic!” Marla pipes up instantly, “Sorry, I’ve been waiting for a good time to ask you about it—summoning creatures is one thing but becoming them is a whole other level of study and—” she stops, smiling a little sheepishly. “—Anyways, I think that’s a great idea.”
The rest of the group agrees, and so one of the remaining buildings will be adorned in the Astral School’s symbols.
And maybe, the wizard thinks, when things have settled, they might just have the makings of a future.
