CRIME CITY

definitely gonna clean this post up once I have all my character profiles confirmed and make a more formal story introduction, but I thought I'd do a fun little update on all the characters we've met already as well as a general overview of the plot!

crime city follows winter, florist by day and ruthless murderer by night, in a city ruled by criminals each time the sun sets. the mayor? law enforcement? decorative. useless.

in order to achieve his own goals, child prodigy-turned-crime lord winter lies, steals, and kills — and, when the occasion calls for it, enlists the help of the many outlaws on his list of acquaintances.

but winter, too, is being hunted.

here are the current cast:

WINTER (THE RAVEN)

there are only three things anyone can ever claim to know about him: one, he always smiles; two, he is always dangerous; and three, he always wears black. is he mourning someone?

revered as "the king of hell," this strange ghostly man hates rain, doesn't drink, and used to be a detective.

BRENDOLINE BARBARA (THE LADY)

the mayor's daughter. frustrated by her own powerlessness and the facade of her father's position, she became a vigilante. winter must be destroyed, and, as the saying goes, if you want something done right, you have to do it yourself.

how hard can it be when you find yourself falling in love with the man you want to kill, and who wants to kill you?

GIOVANNI MERCURO (THE SNITCH)

a croupier who runs the "snake eyes" gambling house, giovanni will glady offer you valuable information — that is, of course, if you can win against him. if he likes you enough, maybe his sleight of hand will come in handy for your pickpocketing needs.

believing it to be the height of carelessness to be complacent and predictable in a city crawling with vermin, he refuses to be consistent. he never wears the same hairstyle twice, never plays the same game twice, and never sleeps with the same person twice.

ASHCROFT (THE SNIPER)

a hitman for hire with the air of someone who used to be noble. rarely getting jobs due to his exorbitant prices, when he's out of money and out of work, he plays the saxophone on street corners and in bars for loose change.

as far as assassins go, he's pretty resourceful. after all, his sax doubles as a sniper rifle.

FALK (THE BLOODHOUND)

hates tardiness and thinks dogs are annoying and difficult. he does not appreciate the irony of his criminal title.

once a military man, an inflicted injury forced him to develop his already keen sense of smell into the formidable skill he has today of hunting people down using only their scent to compensate for his impaired vision.

I have silly state headcanons for each oxventure deadlands character, like which state each character is originally from

Edie is from Louisiana because she told Silas that he shouldn't go to Louisiana, which implies that she already knows about Louisiana and her fancy lady vibes fit with Louisiana. Also, in a modern au, she would vibe so hard with Mardi Gras and all the Louisianan folklore.

Silas is from Florida because he would not be fazed by the chaos of "Florida Men" and just make them face justice. Also, because it's funny. In a modern au, he can be good with old people (like Egbert is) because Florida is a retirement state. Also, because I think the idea of him liking alligators is cute.

Garnet is from California because that's where a lot of people went to get rich and where there are rich people there are people who can gamble so her and her father could get money from gambling and being croupiers.

Delacy is canonically from somewhere in the Dustbowl, tbh I don't think he knows which state exactly. If I had to pick, I would say Kansas. A part of why being the Wizard of Oz and the cyclone in that that whisked Dorothy and Toto off on an adventure and the parallel of Delacy leaving home in search of adventure.

Nate is from Texas just bc a lot of people migrated to Texas during the wild west times and since Nate is Dutch, you could argue that he immigrated to Texas from the Netherlands for job opportunities when he was younger and is now just a silly old man still working hard.

Stay away Goddess Part 2

Cao Fangjie was waiting with her breath held for Hua Cheng to reply. She paid no mind to the chattering ghosts surrounding her. So what if Hua Cheng was married? She liked him and who would reject her?

The croupier announced, "Our Lord rejects."

Loud laughters and cheers filled the air. The goddess felt embarrassed at being rejected like that. But she couldn't just start a fight here and blow her cover.

Hua Cheng, behind the thin red veil, held an expression of amusement. What could this little goddess's intention be to want to court him? Didn't she know who he belonged to? Was she stupid?

Deciding not to dwell on useless topics, he let it slide as the goddess walked away, her head now ducked lower than it was when she came inside.

"San Lang?" Xie Lian's voice rang on his head, mixed with tenderness and exhaustion.

"Yes gege?"

"San Lang, I'll be a little late today. There's a matter in the east that needs to be handled. Sigh."

"Does gege need any help?"

"No no, it's fine, really. I am taking his highness Qianqiu with me."

"Alright, take care of yourself gege."

"You can meet me in the Puji shrine later, the villagers were missing you."

"You wish is my command my love."

Hua Cheng could hear laughter on the other end and he was sure Xie Lian was blushing right now.

Needless to say, Hua Cheng felt bored after that. Since Gege won't be back home quickly, he'll have to stay in this chaotic den for longer. How annoying. He pulled out his dice, rolling them and parting through the curtains. A humble abode in the sunny fields of paddy welcomed him.

It was Puji Shrine. After the villagers had rebuilded it, the dwelling was better. Although at one point Hua Cheng had to step in and redesign many things.

His form was back to the seventeen year old youth as he strolled through the forest grounds behind the shrine, looking after the flowers they planted together.

"Look who we have here." A crisp mellow voice spoke.

Hua Cheng frowned, straightening back up. In front of him was a young lady dressed in black, her white hair dancing with the wind.

"My lord." She bowed in greeting.

Hua Cheng merely raised an unimpressed eyebrow, "You are mistaking me for someone else."

Cao Fangjie smiled from ear to ear."How can anyone mistake the Crimson Rain Sought flower? The one and only terror of the heavens."

Hua Cheng clenched his teeth, his form shifting to a more intimidating one in a swirl of butterflies. Now that his eye was sharp and hair wild, he looked much stronger than before. Cao Fangjie felt her stomach fliped at the sight of the Ghost king.

"Cao Fangjie, martial goddess of the west." Hua Cheng tilted his head.

"You know me." Her smile was so wide that it seemed to radiate light by now.

"You are the one who came to my den today." Hua Cheng looked bored while saying that.

"My lord knew?" Her smile faltered for a bit, feeling conscious.

"Your disguise was lousy."

"I-I, I wasn't actually trying to hide."

Hua Cheng scoffed but said nothing else.

"If you have nothing important for me, please leave."

Cao Fangjie had heard of the Ghost king being extremely rude and brutal but this was nothing in her opinion. He was just a busy man who didn't like socializing. She was very much like that too.

"I-I actually -"

"If you are still set on that bet, I advise you to back off right now. I have no interest in keeping a pesky kid like you around me. Nor as a servant or anything else. Now. Leave." He seethed, eyes growing red.

"Hot." The goddess spoke without thinking.

Hua Cheng was taken aback and the surprise was visible on his face as he gave her an incredulous look. "What did you say."

Cao Fangjie felt her cheeks burn as she stared in the Ghost king's obsidian eye, "You are hot. My lord."

To say that Hua Cheng was baffled by this Goddess's guts would be an understatement. He was entirely repulsed. Surely this woman wasn't right in the head or she had ulterior motives.

"I might just turn you to ashes if you act so bold in front of me. Mind your limits goddess."

The way Hua Cheng said goddess did something to Cao Fangjie, her heartbeat skyrocketed in a matter of seconds. It was a taboo for a martial god and thus she was very disappointed in herself. But there as no way she'd leave this ghost king alone.

"Do you-"

"San Lang!" Xie Lian's voice came from the shrine like a melodious song. And so did the God appear in his white robes, his face was painted with dirt and so were his hands. But he directly walked towards Hua Cheng, hugging the taller man close.

Sigh. "I am so tired."

"Welcome back gege." Hua Cheng hugged him in return.

Xie Lian had come so fast that he failed to notice the presence on another entity in the clearing. Cao Fangjie was speechless. The way Hua Cheng spoke to her and the way he spoke to Xie Lian was as different as heaven and hell.

Xie Lian was covered in dirt and yet Hua Cheng had hugged him so closely. Xie Lian was too disrespectful to the ghost king. She concluded.

"My lord." She spoke curtly, giving a little bow.

Hua Cheng glared at her while Xie Lian jumped slightly, turning in Hua Cheng's embrace to find the goddess standing by the peach blossom trees. He smiled embarrassedly, returning the greeting, "What a surprise to find Lady Fanjie here."

"Ah, yes, I came to have a word with Lord Chengzhu but he seems to dislike my polite greeting."

Xie Lian looked up to find Hua Cheng giving her a sour look and then looked back at the goddess, "My apologies your highness but if San Lang doesn't like you company, I can not do anything."

The use of a pet name didn't go unnoticed by the goddess, "Very well, I may return in some other better time then." Cao Fanjie bowed and walked away.

"Finally." Hua Cheng groaned, nosing into Xie Lian's hair and kissing the top of his head.

"San Lang, was she giving you a hard time?"

Hua Cheng chuckled, hugging his husband closer. "No gege, she was just very annoying. I asked her to leave several times but she was dead set of staying."

"Hmm? Why so?"

"Apparently she wants to marry me. Gege, these martial gods in heaven think I am in the market, you need to mark me more often." Hua Cheng had shifted to his younger form while still in Xie Lian's embrace as the other turned back around to face him. He jutted his lower lip out, pretending to pout. Xie Lian's face flushed at the notion of "marking" him more often.

"San Lang!"

"Gege!"

In the night, the paradise manor was quite, only the occasion chiming of the bells on the wind chime out of their balcony was heard. Hua Cheng's head was nestled in Xie Lian's neck and their naked bodies flushed together. While feeling his husband's soft breath tickle his neck, Xie Lian's thoughts wandered to today. The fact that a goddess could come to puji shrine in pursuit of Hua Cheng was weird.

Without thinking much, he pressed two fingers to his forehead, "Your highness Yin yu?"

The oher responded immediately, "Yes your highness?"

"Er, it's a little strange question but, has a goddess been spotted in ghost city recently?"

"En, the new martial goddess of the west came to gambler's den today. She wanted to bet 100 years of servitude for Chengzhu's hand in marriage."

Xie Lian's eye twitched, a flicker of something unfamiliar flashing in his mind. "Okay, thank you your highness."

The line went silent but Xie Lian's head was in chaos. Why had a new goddess randomly decided to paw on his husband?

Hooooo, what a week I had!! On Monday, I started working in a casino and quickly realised I won't last long. My hands are turbo small and it caused me more trouble than one could think - I couldn't lift up a full stack, I was always 1-2 tokens off. And generally, I think I am in a bad place mentally because whenever my croupier-teacher would take me to the roulette table, I'd start crying uncontrollably!! Seemingly for no reason but there must be something wrong with my head. Am I crying over math or some trauma I can't figure out? On the third day I cried on the bus on my way to work and then cried once again at the start of my shift. It was obvious to me that I couldn't possibly live like this, and I quit promptly. (ㅠ﹏ㅠ)

Luckily, the casino director was a down-to-earth lady and she understood my situation. She was right when she said that working in a casino couldn't be described perfectly to someone who'd never worked in one before. Sooo... Ya girl is now unemployed, but still not as desperate to regret quitting the school job. The pay was awful and I intend to find a job that will let me earn a decent pay, fitting my degree. Maybe I'll work for some company outside of Poland? That would be sweet. (๑•́ -•̀)

The Sims is now a lil my escapism from the situation - I can forget where I am and focus solely on the lives of my Sims. However, not that much happened lately when it comes to the Owl family. Basically, I tried to find joy in playing toddlers but it was difficult as always - they're boring as fuck, and the upcoming infant update would pretty much make me speedrun/skip two life stages now. But I don't have to worry about it, as Hieronim and Baltazar are already children at this point in time. On another note, Debora happened to visit Serafin. No clue why, as they absolutely hate each other and they haven't spoken in ages but this gave Serafin a sweet idea as to how to get rid of the unwanted guest. It's what she deserves for all these years of being mean to him ( ͡ᵔ ͜ʖ ͡ᵔ)

X-ray Raz is VERY cute and we don't appreciate that enough.

"Our Lady of Restraint" and the fact that Hollis' mental sanctuary is in the hospital chapel suggests she might be religious, which I think is a neat little addition.

Actually, aside: I think it's very telling that your controls DON'T invert when Raz is on a levitation ball. By all accounts they should, which tells me that Raz is SUCH an experienced circus performer that he doesn't even have to think about reversing his movement on top of a ball. He just does it automatically because he has so much practice.

The Lady Lucktopus exterior has a great deal of seagull crap in specific high-risk spots which I think is a very funny and niche detail to add that does a good job of adding depth to the scene.

Also I wish I could more closely examine the low-poly distance models for this scene, it's really neat. And the Skybox here is really quite pretty.

I think the Croupier is using the same soundbite as the one from Grim Fandango, which is a very clever little reference.

GOD Hollis' Hot Streak looks good.

The exterior of Hollis' Hot Streak has tentacles and cards wrapping around the world, and even the buildings are wavy like tentacls. Just a real cool note.

There's an X-ray that features a skull with three eye sockets, to indicate a psychic's 'third eye' which is entertaining.

Hollis' high-rollers lounge features a heart motif rather than a sunrise (which I think is what it was before). This because she hasn't been following her heart, and you have to help her realign her thoughts with her heart.

MAN I love the things this game does with gravity and perspective.

I suspect Hollis has an 'addictive personality' even though she understands the math behind gambling. All this happened too easily, I bet she'd be into Gacha games and blind boxes, but she wouldn't indulge in them because they're 'a waste of money'. I think the maternity ward music has "Rock a bye baby" in its music.

In the Pharmacy at least, we can see that the pharmacy is erupting out of Hollis' mental blockages. I suspect she's very frequently stuck in the same way of thinking, which could be why she struggles to solve the financial issues-- but also why she's known for her steadfast attitude. Hollis never changes, and Hollis has a very straightforward and direct moral compass. All three of her minigames relate to her heart, I suspect she's very head-driven, and might not have ever really been driven by her heart. While Raz definitely tinkered with her problem-solving abilities and muddled things, I think he also helped her handle being more in-tune with her emotions, which might be why she softens up on Raz just a bit in the game.

I wish there was a New Game + Where I could play with all the powers and upgrades I've earned previously unlocked.

The medical nurses are incredibly funny still.

Says the heart: "My doctor told me to stay off this leg. but he's also my boss, and he told me if I miss another race, I'll be fired." I think that indicates Hollis' disregard for her own feelings nicely. The one time she let her feelings override her logic, she made a mistake that ended her medical career. "Who am I to complain? I'm not special." Also the heart is literally a 'broken heart'. Worth noting, the other runners in the cardio race all see Raz as a joker, except the heart who sees Raz as a coach.

I like Adam and Lizzie. They're neat.

The Lady Lucktopus' cards are actually pretty neat, I bet they could be adapted into a real playing card set.

And his small black eyes displayed such a variety of terryfing emotions - bloodlust, greed, sin and so much sadness. Why would a monster ever feel scared, you wondered. 

 Working for the Luccianos wasn’t especially hard or even dangerous - you ran small errands for them, took care of the younger kids, helped with insignificant deals, acted as a croupier when their staff was sick or missing or had to be taken care of, but one thing you were thankful for was how they never tried to force you into doing something you would never be able to forgive yourself for. Thomas was kind to you -  always so considerate, willing to listen, to understand how you felt even when the worlds you two lived in differed so greatly. He was supposed to be villain of the story, big and scary, demanding, taking whatever he wants without asking and never feeling an ounce of regret about it. And for a while, you were suspicous of the man’s every move - you were desperately waiting for the mobster to fuck up and show his true colours so you could let yourself hate him, despise him. And yet the sweet, sweet moment of revelation never came. You knew, of course, of the many evil deeds the criminal bestowed upon thousands of innocent people each and every day, but you never witnessed it with your own eyes and when the man was treating you like a part of his family, holding you close and giving you chance after chance to prove yourself, it was slowly getting impossible to view him as the bad guy. Perhaps you should have waited just a little longer.

 It happened during a warm, spring day. You didn’t expect it, you couldn’t. You had just finished your shift at midnight in the small shop you worked in, which belonged to Thomas’ mother, and were heading to the Lucciano mansion. It had been a particularly long and exhausting day, so you wanted nothing more than to feel the soft, silky, white sheets down your half-naked body while the quiet classical music took you to dream land and back. But upon opening the heavy wooden door, you quickly noticed something was different - there was no music, the big black TV in the middle of the hall was set to camera mode instead of the normal one, and it was awfully quiet. “They must have had to leave the country for a while.” You rationalised. “It has happened before after all.” You kept reassuring yourself while taking a tiny step towards the centre of the room where light was the strongest - it could uncover every hidden little detail.

 And then the TV was turned on. You shifted your gaze up, paranoia eating at you from inside out. Soon there was clear image on the massive screen, but what you saw left you speechless. There were hours of footage from your personal life - working, hanging out with friends, eating, bathing. What made the shivers down your spine run cold was a scene where a guy, your boyfriend, was kissing you, touching you, undressing you with his praying eyes. It was nothing unusual for a young woman to have a love life, but this broke the only rule Thomas had told you upon entering the house - you were forbidden from having close relationships with men, especially dangerous ones, and for the longest time, you had no issue living by that as long as you came back to the luxury and warmth the mobster provided for you. Until you met him - a charming, clever member of a local gang. You knew it was wrong and could cost you more than you were willing to sacrifice and yet you still gave in. It was your first time experiencing the highs and lows of love, so who could blame you when it was such a magical feeling, a mixture of adrenaline and opium. Alex made you feel like a real human being instead of someone just existing, leeching off the stronger, wealthier species.

 There was a shadow moving out from the corner, playing into your delusions. But soon enough you realised it was all a reality as none other than Thomas walked slowly towards you, clapping his hands dramatically, a sly smirk on his beautiful, scarred face. Did he...

 "Congratulations." The man started off, dark eyes set on you, slowly coming closer and closer like a big black hole, ready to swallow you whole. "You went and got yourself a little boy - toy." The criminal chuckled viciously under his breath, making you cringe at the crude nickname he used. The situation felt surreal and yet the fear and panic were already suffocating you, making you dizzy wish regret. "I wish you would have told me though... I never thought someone I hold so important would lie to me." The mobster kept rambling, waving his arms in the air theatrically, while holding a lit cigarette, but never moving it to his lips - it was just a prop, a way to create a thick smoke mist in your eyes. It was finally the hour of judgement.

 "What do you want?" You asked, faking confidence, desperate to take control of what was happening. It was a bizarre thing to see your dearest friend act in such a eerie, frightening way, almost treating you like one of his victims - nothing more than an indebted bastard or an unfortunate bystander, unlucky enough to catch a deal unfolding right behind the scenes. It hurt but you had forced this upon yourself and you had to fix it.

 "Nothing much, really." Thomas replied, finally inhaling the deadly smoke into his open mouth. He played with his collar for a while, as if you weren't standing there, scared for your life. "I just want to teach you a lesson in obedience, doll." The mafioso continued, circling you slowly, his heavy gaze never leaving your body. You felt awfully exposed even when all your clothes were present, covering every inch of your skin. With a swift snap of his fingers, the man summoned most of the gorillas that worked under him. Two of them were dragging your kicking, screaming boyfriend towards the centre of the room, but a quick punch in the guts managed to quiet him down. He looked terrified, his face bloody and injured, covered in dust and misery. But he was still alive and only that mattered to you.

 "I wanted to make this entertaining for all of us." The oldest Lucciano spoke out, his husky voice echoing trough the golden ceiling. He moved over to your lover and harshly pressed the cigarette butt against the exposed skin of his unprotected arm. The man cried out in pain, silently pleading you to help with his big, terrified eyes. And here you were, as helpess as he was - if not even more. "So I decided to initiate a little gamble of sorts, ya know?" Thomas winked at you, smiling with malice. You couldn't help, but recall all the times you two had played poker together, betting less than pocket change. You never understood why the man always got so excited despite winning such small sums, especially when his casinos already did well. But now you could see it clearly - he got off crushing his opponent, taking the victory under their noses. Money meant nothing. As long as he was able to ruin your mood, your life, the man was pleased.

 Soft white light lit up the furthest corners of the hall and you saw dozen square boxes, arranged in a circle. It looked harmless enough on its own, still they were stamped with Thomas’ symbol - a dove. You used to wonder why someone in the most dangerous depts of mafia would choose such an innocent, sweet signature pf representation and now the answer was right in front of you - that way it was easier to trick the enemy into thinking they were safe. And how wrong were they. 

 “As you can see, there are nine wooden boxes in total. They look exactly the same and on top of each one there is a hole.” Thomas stopped to point at them, the raw anticipation flooding his otherwise dull pupils. “Six of the boxes are empty. In the other three though, there are placed some of the most poisonous snakes in the world. One bite and you are dead.” The madman gave a loud, breathy laugh while your boyfriend squirmed uncomfortably in place, restrained by the strong arms, holding him down. “Both of you will take four turns putting your hand in the boxes. After every round the box would be closed off and you would be able to choose only from the remaining ones. ” The mobster grinned widely, looking at your horrified expression. You couldn’t believe that the man was willing to put your lives on the line simply because you had neglected one of his orders. “Now you may be wondering where the suspence is - after all you would probaby manage to hear the hissing from afar and avoid the place it comes from. Rest assured, my foolish little friends. Right now the snakes are heavily intoxicated and absolutely silent - which doesn’t mean, of course, that they won’t attack any soft flesh they see. If you die, that’s on you, but if you survive, you will be rewarded.” Thomas clapped his hands together and his man let go of your lover, resulting in his falling to the ground with a heavy bang. Thomas pursed his lips together.

 “Shall we get started?”

Stay Away Goddess-Part I

A new goddess recently ascended. She's fire, literally. Her aura is so strong that anyone barely has the guts to speak in front of her or against her. Cao Fangjie. She's a martial goddess, taking over West alongside Qi Ying.

Although she's young, sprightly, beautiful and kind, in most situations, she's also snarky, witty and... notorious, to put it gently. She and Qi Ying often get into brawls for fun. One fine day, she crosses paths with Xie Lian. She's not really ignorable, with her wild platinum hair and contrasting black attire, she can't go unnoticed. But his royal highness just bowed to her in greeting and left? Didn't even look back?

She wasn't offended, no no. But she was curious, not at all missing the two fingers Xie Lian pressed to his temple, chatting with his rumored beloved. She huffed and decided to let it slide. After all, XL was the strongest martial God.

Another time she clashed ways with Xie Lian wasn't actually with Xie Lian. She was strolling through the mortal realm with a deputy general. Sensing a strong essence of evil, she decided to take a look at which ghost this powerful was randomly lounging here.

When her eyes caught the sight of Blood red maple robes, sharp eyebrows, and deep obsidian eyes, fixated on the flower crown he was sewing in his lap, she felt her heart skip a beat. The youth was not more than seventeen but his build was very fine, hiding muscles under those fitting robes.

He was seated on the grass field all alone, focusing on the task in hand. Dianxia had said he'd be back in a minute or so and thus Hua Cheng was keeping himself busy with this. He smiled at his handy work when the white flowers were finally sewn together in that crown. It would be more beautiful when donned by his highness.

As if sensing a strong hindrance in the array he set near that field, he whipped his head to find a black clad lady standing by the field. Her hair was abnormally white and she was sporting a short expression. As if caught in staring, the lady blushed and ducked her head. Hua Cheng raised an eyebrow to himself but decided to ignore the intruder.

Cao Fangjie thought the youth was very cute but a little weird, sitting all alone in a field, surrounded by an array. Could he be a god's little brother? Her question was answered when a familiar God walked out from the trees behind. It was Xie Lian, donning his humble white attire and bamboo hat.

Multiple ideas swarmed in her head, how easy would it be to reach out to this handsome youth through his highness. But her thoughts were disturbed when Xie Lian lowered his head to place a kiss on Hua Cheng's lips. Cao Fangjie's eyes widened in surprise.

So this was his highness's beloved!? T-this is Crimson rain sought flower? The terror of the heavens!? She watched as Hua Cheng smiled at Xie Lian and placed the flower crown on his head. They were both so wrapped up in their little bubble that they didn't even notice how a goddess was staring at them from afar.

After that day, Cao Fangjie was found in libraries and the civil Gods' office. When asked, she was researching about Hua Cheng. And there were so many texts about him that she didn't dare carry that on.

Finally, getting bored from the books, she Descended in the mortal realm. Ghost city to be specific. Her appearance this time was different, her hair was still white, tied in a braid resting on her shoulder but her stature was thin and seductive, hidden under gray robes which didn't contain any heavenly jewelry.

She had done her research about ghost city, so it was only natural that the first place she went in was the gambler's den. She stood in front of the curtains, by the long table. She could somewhat make out the line of a certain someone lounging on the divan behind the red veil.

"Greetings madam, please put forward your bet." The croupier spoke formally. Cia Fangjie smiled slightly and spoke in a confident tone, "I would like to bet 100 years of my life in return for Chengzhu's hand in marriage." Silence permeated the air. Each and every head turned towards her Even the figure behind the veil sat upright on hearing this.
