France day 1 part 3

In the cab to dinner we drove through central Paris asking along the left bank which was full of police - the driver thought they were for the parliamentary elections which had happened at the weekend and weren't good news for Macron. We went to l'abysse part of Yannick Alleno ladoyenne empire. It's a two star sushi restaurant and it was wonderful. The decor was based around coral and mainly white - the China plates and cutlery was also gorgeous - the sea shell teaspoon was inspired - designed by Richard Lauret. We sat side by side on a lovely low couch looking out over the room - this is a place for lovers not business.

We ordered the smaller tasting menu and enjoyed every mouthful. The starters were fresh and tasty - pushing at the boundaries - with complexity and skill creating some beautiful harmonious dishes. The white asparagus, dashi gel and pike roe custard was wonderful. I ordered a glass of very reasonably priced vigonier (6 euros)and Laura a less reasonable glass of jaquesson champagne.

The mains was a series of beautiful sushi ranging from delicious tuna, mackerel to red mullet - all paired down and simple allowing the perfect fish to sing through - bonus fact the best tuna comes from the gulf of Mexico they are the largest so they have the best fatty bits.

We loved this so much we ordered an extra tuna sushi. We were given strict instructions to respect the chef and not put ginger on top of our sushi. Also no additional soy or wasabi - they clearly know I like to bathe in these given half a chance. We were encouraged to use our fingers to eat - Laura did but I used chopsticks.

Laura enjoyed a lovely range of sake including one from Hiroshima - they were lovely some very fragrant and complex.

I enjoyed a lovely bottle of white Rhone wine - Domaine François Villard - SAINT PERAY - it was fresh but big flavours and was enjoyable with all the sushi.
