Over time, the trend of bringing traditional concepts into the modern age is steadily increasing. One of the popular approaches is getting the Filipiniana dress and revamping it with a stylish appearance and style.
This revamped approach has given a new spotlight to shine across these local dresses, but why so? Look into how the Filipiniana dresses and gowns fell from obscurity and made a comeback in the trending modern world.
Traditional Filipiniana Attire
In the old times, Filipiniana traditional dresses were worn as a status of grace. These dresses are designed with intricate patterns and choices of vibrant colors. These gowns are an equivalent to the more modern dresses and gowns people associate with. These gowns help women have a stand-out feel and display their social status during formal occasions.
The Temporary Fall
While traditional gowns were quite popular in its time, in the following years, they have experienced a big decline. Western clothing and fashion trends from outside countries are becoming more prevalent. The recent popularity and influence has made a huge shift for traditional garments.
Many Filipinos opt for contemporary styles in their daily lives, which results in the decline of traditional attire.
The Rise of Filipiniana in the Modern World
Despite its decline long before, recently, there has been a notable resurgence of interest in bringing traditional Filipino fashion back into the spotlight. Many organizations and individual parties within the Philippines have this desire in reconnecting the Filipino people to their roots. They have made tireless efforts to promote and modernize traditional clothing.
This approach has resulted in todayâs barong tagalog and Filipiniana gowns adopting a streamline and modernized designs while still keeping many notable features that helps it retain its identity.
Elements of Modern Filipiniana Fashion
As mentioned, many organizations and designers have been implementing different approaches to bringing traditional clothes into the modern age.
Modern Filipiniana fashion incorporates new fabrics and materials, blending them with the traditional design approach. The implementation of modern components makes these attires more comfortable and versatile.
Additionally, Filipiniana dresses, gowns, and sets designed in the modern age often feature new colors and designs. It makes the dresses stand out from their traditional counterpart by having mixed colors and intricate embroidery.
Many fashion and clothing designers experiment with patterns in infusing a fresh approach towards traditional dresses. Furthermore, modern designers would apply innovative creativity in streamlining and enhancing the dressesâ overall style. They adapt modern preferences into traditional styles, offering custom options that fit both worlds.
The Global Appeal of Filipiniana Fashion
Adopting traditional Filipiniana dresses, gowns, and sets has impacted culture. The trend of bringing traditional concepts and putting a modern twist on them has given Filipiniana fashion a big comeback.
The general audience has already begun to show a certain interest in applying traditional clothes to special occasions ranging from weddings to graduation ceremonies.
This trend not only brought traditional fashion back into the local public interests but also garnered significant attention from global audiences. Filipinos from overseas and foreigners have begun implementing traditional wear into their twists at their special events. This can be said for many countries in Asia, but for us Filipinos, it is a true statement. The Filipino culture features great diversity in both linguistic, culinary and cultural aspects that gives each part of this country its own identity. For example, the Philippines has been home to some of the most celebrated names in art history such as Fernando Amorsolo (whose works are on display at the National Museum), Guillermo Tolentino (the famous poet) and even Agamemnon Pantaleon (the first South Asian national who opened an account while working in our country). All these may not have ventured into fashion but they all contribute to our highly recognized cultural identity which is the famous Filipiniana worn gloriously by Mrs. Imelda Marcos back in the day.
Inspired by the rich heritage of the country, the Filipiniana gown has finally seen the light of day ever since the good old 1980s. This year, it seems that the local (and international) fashion scene is taking some fashion inspo from our countryâs national costume. Below, youâll see Janine Guiterrez, Vanessa Hudgens and even newly elected Vice President of the Philippines, Sara Duterte, all decked in traditional Filipiniana.
Janine Guiterrez in a Vania Romoff in a custom full lace Filipiniana dress.
Last February 27, actress and fashion icon, Janine Guiterrez, was spotted wearing a custom full lace Filipiniana dress designed by Filipino fashion designer, Vania Romoff. The actress attended the Film Development Council of the Philippinesâ (FDCP) sixth Film Ambassadorsâ Night, and she was breathtakingly in a âdream Filipinianaâ as the actress puts it. Originally designed with long sleeves, it was converted into having butterfly sleeves (or terno sleeves) to fit the modern flair of Janine.
Vanessa Hudgens pay tribute to her Filipino heritage in a black Jeremy Scott dress.
Hollywood actress, Vanessa Hudgens, turned heads at this yearâs Met Gala when she showed up wearing a sultry but stunning Jeremy Scott black dress. The half American half Filipina actress took to Instagram to say that her dress âpays homage to [her] Filipino heritageâ. The puff sleeves of her dress are truly reminiscent of a Filipiniana dress, albeit more modern and sexy. The Filipina-American actress certainly enjoyed her Met Gala night, saying itâs âtruly a magical oneâ.
Most recently, our newly elected Vice President of the Philippines was also spotted donning a beautiful emerald green Filipiniana dress for her inauguration day.
Photo courtesy of Silverio Anglacer / Facebook
Designed by none other than Davao-based designer, Silverio Anglacer, the newly elected VP is truly a force (and fashion icon) to reckon with. Wearing a free flowing dress with embroidery accents, the Vice President of the Philippines is definitely a Filipina worthy of wearing the countryâs national costume.
Filipiniana custom dresses or traditional costumes have always been a part of our history and culture. The rise of the Filipiniana in 2022 is a testament to this tradition and how it is recognized as one of its own. Itâs a fact that a new generation of young designers will be using local designs to create globally-inspired works inspired by their very own cultural heritage. Here at BarongsRUs, we also pride ourselves in providing custom fit Filipinianas that showcase the beauty of our own culture.

From what was most commonly known by many, barongs are just for formal and special events. But if you have stayed in the Philippines for quite a while, you will notice that barongs are not just for formal and special events. They can also be used daily.
Office workers, government officials, teachers, and other employees wear barong as their daily uniform. We can also see some schools using barong as their regular school uniform. Seminary students, Bible School students, priests, ministers, and other religious leaders love to wear barongs for their daily activities.
Since barongs are frequently used by many, you donât have to wear expensive ones if you plan to use them daily. It would be practical to wear these cheap and yet elegant looking barongs at Barongsrus. Look at how perfect they are for daily use. Letâs check them out.
The Affordable Jusilyn Barong
This may look elegant, but the price is only $49.99. With nearly fifty dollars, you already have a long sleeve, Chinese collar barong with extrinsic embroidered design at front. This type of barong is perfect for lawyers, government officials, and political leaders. It is also best for priests, church ministers, and other office workers.
The Cheapest Jusylyn Barong at Barong R us
This is another Jusilyn barong that you would love to wear every day. Not because itâs cheap, but because of the way it looks. Who would have thought that this is a cheap barong? In fact, itâs the cheapest one that you can find at Barongs R Us. It may have the same fabric with the previous one that we have, but it only costs $39.99, discounted from its original price, which is $46.99.
It is simple, traditional, and, yet, it has a very classy look. No one would ever think that is a cheap one. It has a traditional straight point collar with buttons that opens all the way down. It has a simple yet elegant embroidered design at front. Just a little caution: someone might wrongfully accuse you of spending a lot for daily barong because of the way it looks. When that happens, just smile and tell them the price and donât leave the price tag hanging.
White Short Sleeve Barong for Daily Use
When it comes to daily use, short sleeve barongs are the perfect ones, especially if you use it for your regular job that requires a lot of physical activity. You wanted to have more freedom on your arms, so short sleeves are the best. This is perfect for educators, school professors, business staff, and many more. Ideal for people who are always on the go and yet wanted to maintain their classic formal look.
It has a traditional straight collar with buttons opening halfway at the front. Its U-shape embroidery is elegantly designed. It only costs $59.99 at the store. Itâs the best and practical barong that you can wear every day because it has linings, which help reinforce the durability and flexibility of the barong. Just donât pick a fight while wearing it, it will surely look ugly.
Elegant Short Sleeve Barong for Daily Use
This one is another elegant and yet affordable barong that wouldnât make you guilty if you wear it every day. Itâs good for daily use due to its lightweight and cool fabric, perfect for beating the heat every day. But you wonât regret how extremely formal and elegant you will look on this.
It has a traditional straight collar with full open button at front. It may look simple but look at the embroidered designs on the chest as well on its collar. You can clearly see its distinction among typical ordinary barongs. Itâs definitely something that you can wear every day but itâs not something that you can see every day and it only cost $59.00.
Other Low Price Barongs
There are other barongs that you can buy under $50.00 at Barongs R Us like this elegant Piña-Jusilyn Barong Tagalog that cost only $49.00. These barongs are also perfect for politicians, government officials and leaders, lawyers, priests, church ministers and many more.

When it comes to formal events, there is no denying that Filipinos love looking fashionable and at their best. In fact, many Filipinos still wear a touch of our national clothing like a custom-made barong Tagalog or Filipino modern dress to important occasions they attend.
True enough, the recent 2022 presidential inauguration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. last June 30, 2022 at the National Museum of the Philippines saw many fabulous and beautiful Filipino dresses. There is no doubt that the sartorial grandeur of these barongs and dresses significantly impacted the inauguration of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. this year.
Letâs take a look at these masterpieces of modern barong Tagalog and filipiniana dress present at the 2022 presidential inauguration.
Toni Gonzaga in Mark Bumgarner
Actress-singer Toni Gonzaga wore a Mark Bumgarner creation. The silk chiffon white terno Filipiniana gown was delicately hand-draped and decorated with a Sampaguita brooch. Puey Quinones created this gorgeous modern Filipiniana dress. She also accessorized her gown with vintage Riqueza Fine Jewelry items to add the elegant look.

Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio in Light Peach Terno
Vice President Sara Duterte-Carpio wore a Cary Santiago custom-made filipiniana dress styled in a cream-colored terno. Barong Tagalog has always been a timeless, classical piece of clothing that Filipinos are proud of. From then to now, it still makes a sophisticated appearance in events of all kinds. From weddings to graduation ceremonies, and even corporate events, barong Tagalogs are still on top of the formal attire game. It wouldnât be too much of a stretch to say that this is a good piece of investment. Given its timeless nature, a barong Tagalog will never go out of style.
If you are planning to buy and invest in one, you might consider opting for custom-made or something ready-to-wear depending on what will best suit your taste and needs.
Pick and go
Ready-to-wear barong Tagalogs are perfect for individuals who would love to invest in a classy piece of clothing but donât have the luxury of time on their hands. If this is you, donât worry! You can still express your sense of style as you choose from a wide range of perfectly crafted barong Tagalogs that you can buy.
This is also the best option for those willing to spend only a specific amount of money but doesnât want to sacrifice quality. Since this kind of barong Tagalog is ready to be worn, it is more cost and time-efficient.
Taking into consideration that it is pre-made, you just need to be mindful of choosing sizes. Remember that one of the key things to ensuring your formal attire looks extraordinary is if it fits you perfectly. The good thing is, if you ever need to alter anything to make your outfit 100% flawless, you can always take your barong Tagalog to your local seamstress for fixing.
Tailor fit for you
If youâre someone who is all about the intricate details of your barong Tagalog and is particular about how you want it to fit and look, your best bet is to order something that is custom-made. This way, you have a say on how it will be put together and designed.
As you customize your order, you can choose the kind of collar, cuffs, fabric to be used, and many others. Aside from this, you can provide accurate measurements to ensure that there is little to no need for alteration when your barong Tagalog arrives.
One of the things that you need to look out for when purchasing a custom-made barong Tagalog is the turnaround time for the order to be placed, made, and delivered. Taking into consideration the specifics of the piece, it might take up to a few weeks for it to be shipped. There is also no fixed price for your barong Tagalog. Most of the time, the price varies primarily from the design/style, bigger than usual in size and kind of fabric used.
Your choice
In the end, it all boils down to what you need. If you are someone who doesnât like delving into the littlest details and likes things to be done in one go, you can easily choose a ready-to-wear barong Tagalog while saving time and money. The Philippines is known for its beautiful and attractive tourist spots. But did you know that the Philippinesâ pride also comes from its lively and graceful traditional dances, especially Maria Clara suite? Yes, you heard it right! Not just that, folk dancers are also well-known for wearing Barong Tagalog in graceful Maria Clara suite.
Have you ever heard of the Philippinesâ traditional folk dances? Or have you watched any live performances from Filipino folk dancers?
Are you curious about why Filipino folk dancers are prominent in wearing barong Tagalog? Hereâs why!
Why Barong?
You should be asking right now, why barong? Can they just wear formal polo and then dance? No. Not at all!
Maria Clara suite showcases Spanish influence in music, dress, and dance. Part of the influence of Spaniards is wearing barong in a Maria Clara dance. Almost all dances require wearing it.
Dancing in barong Tagalog represents a lot of attributes Filipino have and it also serves as a respect to the culture and traditions of the Philippines. In some dances, wearing it portrays a formal or flirtatious way of courtship to a Filipina. Just like this one:
Paseo de Iloilo
Actually, this is the most sophisticated dance of Maria Clara Suite. This dance literally shows how Filipinos back then court a Filipina with its formal attire â barong Tagalog.
Aside from wearing barong as a representation and identity of Filipino people, this one might be the best way to describe why Filipinos and some of you should choose barong in school dances and many occasions.
Barong Tagalog is worn over an undershirt. That is why it is considered a greater portion of outerwear than a shirt. This garment is often ornate and appearance is very festive, especially whether it is adorned with lace and embroidery.
Partially, this explains why Barong Tagalog is worn untucked, flowing freely over the pants. The men should not hide beautiful ornamentation underneath the trousers or belts. And also, wearing the barong suits the humid and hot climate in the Philippines better.
Wearing barong also represents Filipinos creative way of making a successful and beautiful product.
Barongs worn by folk dancers are mostly handmade; it is carefully hand-woven to produce better qualities and best smiles while dancing. Who wouldnât be proud wearing a hand-woven barong while dancing, right?
Now, would you prefer dancing in polo rather than representing Filipino arts, culture, and traditions just in one clothing? Of course, youâd choose the later part! Why? Because thatâs the pride that barong brings to every person who wears it.
Barong Tagalog is more than just traditional Filipino clothing. Wearing it and the barong itself is part of the identities of many Filipinos today. Some of the memories in this tradition â wearing barong â may fade, but folk dancers wearing it in traditional dances saved and preserved its representation and value of the Philippines culture, arts, and tradition.
Barongs of today were not just used for folk dances or representing the country, it can also be worn in modern activities, such as State of the Nation Address, ASEAN, and other public and private gatherings that require âFilipino-themedâ attire.
