The Things We Do For Love
a Fools Rush In mini-tale for Valentine's Day
Steve Rogers x wife!LabLead!Reader (Sketch & Keeps❤️🤍💙)
Summary: An accident in the lab leaves you a bit less than desirable for a romantic evening.
Warnings for the teeniest, tiniest bit of language, but otherwise it's just hilarious fluff. This came from a prompt line of Valentine's Day starters and is my submission for @the-slumberparty's Blast From the Past Challenge!
Steve adjusted to enhanced senses fairly soon after the serum took hold. What took longer was recognizing where ‘regular human sense’ fell on his new scale of feeling, seeing, hearing, tasting, and smelling.
By all accounts, human or superhuman, Steve Rogers knows that scent—the one wafting from behind him as he cleans the stovetop—is foul before the door even opens.
The odor is so strong, so intensely pungent, that he has to squint in order to turn and look at you.
But there you are, standing on the front mat covered from head to toe in some sort of thick, putrid muck that lands somewhere on the color wheel as a tertiary combo of yellow and brown. No artist would use that…except maybe to represent such a horrible smell.
The shit—uh, right, the substance—is tough and rubbery, hiding huge swaths of you.
Steve not only covers his mouth, but he also pinches his nose closed in order to address the halted mess that you are right now.
“I have some questions,” he starts, swallowing to rid his mouth of the adjacent taste, “that I’m not going to ask. Except for the obvious are you okay?”
You sigh deeply. It’s clear you are nose blind due to the sheer amount of whatever it is on you. Steve almost wants to vomit in sympathy. He imagines most humans would have fainted by now.
“No,” you say, staring forward, “thanks for asking.”
You lift one foot up to see a thin line of gunk tracking in around your shoes.
“Damnit. Sketch, I need to get to the shower.” You look to him as if asking him to carry you the rest of the way.
“Will it wash off?!” Steve bursts, regretting releasing his nose the instant his hand swings out. “No, sorry, I just meant…no,” he tries again, firm, “use the guest bath. You’re not tarnishing our bathroom like that.”
He can’t make out your facial expression, so he steps around to get closer, god help him.
You nod which produces a kind of friction-squeaking sound. “It is water-soluble.”
Steve’s not encouraged and whispers, “is it feces?”
“Actually, it’s an experimental building material—” you toe off one shoe gently then use your heel to push away the other “—for one of the Union planets, but since it’s here on Earth and we have humidity, the rigidity isn’t the same. ‘Spose to be like concrete on their home world. Still pliable here which is good because—“ you walk on your socked feet, tiptoeing to the spare bath, Steve a respectable distance behind.
You don’t continue, instead struggling to pry off the now two-centimeter thick layer of the top over your torso.
“No, not those. Clothes are a total loss. Just get in and rinse. I’m taking them to the incinerator as soon as you’re presentable.”
He rushes to open the sliding door so you touch nothing on your way in.
“It’s not toxic, Steve. It’s meant to instantly make supported structures in the desert, but our new tech forgot about the expansion rate so—“
“Yeah, yeah, Keeps. Less talking, more washing.” He turns on the water. He imagines you can’t even feel the temperature through the layer.
“Don’t be an ass.”
He grimaces at the color thinning on its journey down the drain. “Don’t smell like one and we’ll talk.”
Your husband points to the back of the shower for you to drop your now malleable clothes and shoves the bar soap in your hands. For good measure, he drizzles liquid body wash down your back. He waits for most of the ick to rinse from your hair and face before helping scrub shampoo through. It’s…unclear if the smell is lingering on the clothes and tile only or if you still stink. “Uh god,” he coughs out, “should I get the vinegar? Would that do it?”
“Steve.”
At least he can see this very sour face you’re making.
“I’m serious. I won’t be able to sleep next to you like that.”
You simply turn the tap hotter. “You’re being a bit dramatic. Our dinner is at eight.”
He sputters. A tragic side effect of increasing the heat is that the smell now seems to bake into everything around you.
“Uh-uh. First things first. I get it if this is the field or out on a mission, but you are inside our home, and that is nasty. I’m getting the vinegar.”
He deliberately nudges the water to a cooler setting and points between his gaze and yours to communicate under no circumstances are you to think this is a relaxing affair. Cleaning your body is now your sole purpose in life as far as Steve is concerned. You just laugh, exasperated but understanding.
Anyone on this planet would agree you are currently rank.
Turns out vinegar doesn’t do shit for this aroma, but you get a text—that FRIDAY reads aloud because your phone sits in the lab on your desk where you left it—from Tony saying a paste of baking soda all over for ten minutes should do it. You remain soaking on the shower floor while Steve takes a bag of your clothes down to be burned and finds an outrageous amount of baking soda to smear all over your body.
Of course, since he has such an acute sense of smell, it’s not a ten minute process; it’s forty.
“Next you’re going to tell me that my eyeballs are too gross because I can’t put this nonsense on them.”
“I have eyedrops for that.”
“Steve!” You flick some of the white paste at your disheveled, focused husband who sincerely looks like he’s wondering where to drop you off in the woods instead of take to a nice dinner. “We have reservations in an hour. It’s time for me to start getting ready.”
“I love you. I love you so much, you know that. You will clear that whole place out if you go tonight.”
“It’s not funny, Sketch. It’s Valentine’s Day. You promised me that ridiculous golden dessert they serve,” you whine, flopping down on the tile.
“Now who’s being dramatic?”
You pout and huff. “Still you, spoil sport.”
He stands up straight, towering over your tiny tantrum, stretching a crick in his back from leaning over to help you for the better part of three hours now. “I will have them deliver whatever you want, honey, but trust me, I’m doing this out of love.”
“Prove it,” you say flatly.
Steve cocks his head, confused.
“If you truly love me,” you coo, “you’ll give me a kiss. Right now.”
Ah shit. He walked into that one. Maybe the stench has dipped below the human threshold, but Steve ‘Drug Dog’ Rogers still thinks you reek…in the most honest and loving way, of course.
He rests his hands on his hips, squelching the waterlogged shirt now covered in god-only-knows-what, looking off to the side and licking his lips in thought.
He has to. He’s a good man. You’re his wonderful, smart, sassy-ass wife. It’s no big deal. Then he sniffs on instinct as a reaction to weighing his options, and yuck, that is…not pleasant, sweetheart.
You open your arms to draw him in. “Lab experiment meet lab experiment,” you snort.
“I will get you two gold desserts,” he starts negotiating, and you drop your hands with a frown. “Everything on the menu.”
“Found your Achilles heel, Rogers?” You maneuver carefully to your feet, almost slipping at the last second.
He does jump closer to help, but he doesn’t quite make it there. Both of you know Steve’s actual reflexes could get him to you if he wanted.
“One kiss or I will cling to you until you have to wash it off you, too.”
He’s…not encouraged.
“Fine, Mister Positive Reinforcement,” you grit out. “Give me one sweet kiss and I will stay in here scrubbing until the food arrives. Deal?”
Steve sighs. The things he does for love…
Carefully, he steps forward and juts out his lips. He’s awkward, more awkward than those first dates you two went on, and it’s obvious he is holding his breath.
As you lean closer, he shuts his eyes, praying you understand that this is just one of those things that’s happened and caught him off-guard and is just…gross. It barely has anything to do with you. Of course, he’d love to take you out and shower you with love, affection, and praise, but right at this second, he’d love to just make you keep showering.
He feels awful about it. You smell so awful though.
Thank goodness your mouth was not covered in paste, and seeing as it was the first place you scraped away the original substance—that and your eyes,—your lips don’t hold any of the scent or taste of stuff.
Then your pasty hands clamp onto his cheeks and Steve moans, not in a good way.
When he pulls away quickly, you’re smiling, tracing the back of one hand down his forehead to pony-pet more residue over his face.
“My white knight,” you dub him.
Steve cracks, grinning from ear to ear.
“Keeps—” he lets your nickname rumble deep in his chest “—are you trying to get me to shower with you?”
“Oh, Captain,” you say, grabbing him by the shirt and pulling, “you’re losing your touch if it took you this long.”
For the water being lukewarm the whole time, it turns out to be a pretty hot shower. Good thing a super soldier can hold his breath extensively.
A long, long while later, sitting together on the floor in front of the couch with matching gilded donuts, Steve kisses your wet, peach-scented hair and smiles.
“Happy Valentine’s Day, my love.”
You hum and turn to reveal gold leaf stuck across those plump lips he adores. “Happy Valentine’s Day, you big wuss.”
You get your good, proper, sweet kiss then, and the next day, the new guy gets put on active research probation.

So I also realized I've created a mess for myself with taglists. I used to only have Steve Rogers stories, and then I branched out. I don't actually know which people want to be tagged in everything, or just CE characters, or just Steve Rogers. IF YOU NOTICE A POST YOU WISHED TO BE TAGGED IN, PLEASE LET ME KNOW BY ASK OR REPLY! I'm working on it, I swear...

Labs at Schmiede20
Labs are emerging for Schmiede20 and we will post in the days to come. As of today we assume that Schmiede20 will happen as scheduled but probably not as planned. It is still unclear how people will be allowed to travel etc. So as of today we assume that we will have a smaller group of Smiths, probably mainly Smiths living in Austria and maybe Germany. So 2020 will be the year to fill rooms. Large SmithProjects are very welcome. please contact us if you got proposals you want to discuss. Office AT schmiede DOT ca
We will inform as soon as there is some clarity.
Till then please apply till Mai 31st so we can prepare for you.
Schmiede20: Pferde / Horses September 16th - 25th Application till May 31st. www.schmiede.ca/apply
In case you want to hold a lab at Schmiede20:
Schmiede the playground of ideas for peer2peer learning and prototyping is organised into labs. A lab at Schmiede is therefore a focused/specialised Schmiede within Schmiede. In this logic Schmiede is the LabLab at Schmiede. Its LabLeaders are Rüdiger, Kerstin and Michi.
Labs at Schmiede are gathering points and islands of interest within Schmiede, bridging projects, labs and Smiths. A Lab can focus on anything of intereset to you, the lab leaders. Smiths with an understanding or strong focus on the content in question take action to create more. By creating a lab at Schmiede you open the door to bring together peers and support each other and your interest.
LabLeaders are Smiths Smiths can talk to if they need direction on how to approach a challenge or who to talk to with connection with the lab.
Depending on external partnerships and funds, labs can vary in size, services and complexity. Schmiede itself provides space and infrastructure at Schmiede and supports communications leading up to Schmiede.
There are labs that focus on a niche, interest or skill set. Another version is a project focused lab, which acts more like an open project development group or think/do tank. We assume there are many more possible versions.
LabLeaders do not have the obligation to solve or work on others’ problems or projects but should direct them to Smiths who can help. Honoring SchmiedeRuleOne: The autonomy of Smith must not be undermined.
LabLeaders’ priority is to create value for themselves and only as a secondary consideration for Schmiede. Our point of view: The better a lab works for the LabLeaders the better it is for Schmiede. The better Schmiede is the better are the participating Smiths and the emerging labs.
Schmiede provides for Labs: # feature by Schmiede # defined space at Schmiede # supports communications leading up to Schmiede # supports visibility leading up to Schmiede # supports finding financial as well as infrastructural partners for labs # refund ApplicationProcessingFee for LabLeaders # refund food fee for LabLeaders
What Schmiede needs from the LabLeaders: # One LabLeader needs to be the primary contact person for the SchmiedeCoreTeam. # Lab documentation (Format will depend on the lab, we will talk, don’t worry). This is more for the development of the Lab than for Schmiede, as we document the general process autonomously as well. However Lab documentations are very welcome and help the SchmiedeCoreTeam to understand Schmiede better.
Public: On day two of Schmiede we will host open LabPresentations. Every Lab has the possibility to present themselves and their focus.
Internal: # LabLeaders intro meeting (probably on day one in the morning). # LabLeader feedback form and feedback meeting (probably via skype).
How to do a lab at Schmiede:
# Step one: A LabLeader needs a good understanding of the SchmiedeContext. LabLeaders should be returning Smiths.
# Step two: Official labs at Schmiede must be accorded with Rüdiger, the early the better, and featured by Schmiede no later than May 20th (for visibility in the current SchmiedeApplicationProcess). It is the duty of the LabLeaders to provide the necessary materials to the SchmiedeCoreTeam in a timely manner (before May 10th).
# Step three: In order to “support finding financial as well as infrastructural partners for labs” we advice for early communications with Rüdiger. (Fall/Winter, no later than February).
Depending on external partnerships, funds and motivation, labs can vary in size, services and complexity. For example: Talks, Workshops etc are welcome, however Schmiede’s budget cannot financially support the initiative. So they can be held on a goodwill basis, ask a fee from workshop participants or have a financing partner. Schmiede is happy to facilitate and support the quest for this partner, however the initiative must come from the LabLeaders. These LabPartners can then be featured online as well as in our print program.
There can be up to three official LabLeaders per lab at Schmiede.
Everyone needs to apply in order to participate at Schmiede. This includes LabLeaders as well as Kerstin, Rüdiger and Michi.

Schmiede18 Labs English
As our print program is German, here is its content concerning labs at Schmiede in English.
NOSE NASE LAB - The sense of smell is a basic function of the human body: it helps us to decide which fruits to eat, where to stay and who is suitable for reproduction. Our nose is constantly processing information, and even in sleep our emotions and memories are unconsciously influenced. Throughout history, humanity has always captured attractive scents and preserved these transient experiences in object form. From this developed the "modern perfumery" and aroma technology. Bartholomew Traubeck and Georg Scherlin invite all olfactory enthusiasts to take a closer look at the processes in our nose. We will analyse the presence of odours in our environment and develop a common vocabulary based on a set of natural and synthetic fragrances. Afterwards, we will deal with the production methods of the ingredients as well as the theoretical basics of perfumery. Together, we will build a steam still, allowing participants to extract fragrances from Hallein and surrounding areas, and then bottle them in a long-lasting manner.
SUDHAUS We are pleased about the decision to start the SUDHAUSLab. The SUDHAUS hallein.kultur uses Schmiede’s frame to collaborate and develop in a focused manner. The aim is to build bridges between cultural institutions and their protagonists. The SUDHAUS is in the process of redesigning art, culture and reception in Hallein. Together we will work on many existing and emerging synergies. The SUDHAUS LabLeaders are Simone Seymer and Christopher Habersatter.
JamIsland JamIsland is a three-day GameJam, a work and networking hub for game creators and game enthusiasts who want to explore the evolution of interactive media. The theme will be announced on Friday the 31.08. at 12:00 pm. This will be followed by workshops on team finding and idea development. The finished projects will be immortalised on Itch.io and presented on Sunday the 02.09. At KG Freiräume. Participation in JamIsland is open and free to all. JamIsland is an initiative of Florian Jindra and Rene Baumgartner in cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences Salzburg.
StudioDREY The Center for Human-Computer Interaction (HCI) projects its "Studio Drei" into the Schmiede. Studio Drei is a space for artistic-scientific experimentation, it stands for the networking between technology and people as well as between science and art and is a place for inspiration, exchange, dialogue, production and presentation. The focus is on Design-based / artistic practice as a research method to question current interactions between people and technology and using concrete artifacts and systems to show alternatives. StudioDREY LabLeaders: Dorothé Smit, Bernhard Maurer and Martin Murer. The StudioDREYLab is an initiative of the Center for Human-Computer Interaction (University of Salzburg)
Tinkerlab Tinkerlab deals with practical approaches to implement physical things artisanal and with the support of software. The results are objects that can be touched, moved by motors and controlled by microprocessors, making sounds and communicating. It's about do-it-yourself methods and electronics-tinkering. The Tinkerlab is equipped with soldering station, Arduino boards, tools, sensors and components. Like-minded people can find, work and network there. LabLeaders are Korinna Lindinger, Sophie Birkmayer and Tammo Claassen. The Tinkerlab is an initiative of subnet and the dolab.
adhocLAB What does it mean to live an active and creative life with children? The adhocLAB is a satellite of the adhocPAD - a creative center in Vienna for people who share their passion in different subcultures. A family friendly place, a design studio, an experimental off-room and workshop. The adhocLAB shows that children of all ages can be included in life and work. The adhocLAB is an initiative of Kathi Macheiner, Lilo Krebernik, Mac Krebernik and the adhocrates collective.

Labs at Schmiede19
It is this time of the year to think about Labs at Schmiede.

SchmiedeLab at SchmiedeY
The SchmiedeLab focuses on the development of Schmiede as a whole. LabLeaders are Kerstin Klimmer, Michael Hackl and Rüdiger Wassibauer.
The magic of Schmiede lies within the Smiths and on the Pernerinsel. Over the years we never wanted to control Schmiede but tried to let Schmiede develop collaboratively with the Smith potential. 2017 is a good year to point out what has been happening in the background all along. Looking back, the club culture driven Schmiede03 and FocusOn was basically the same Schmiede as you know today but quite another show. We came a long way and as it seems we are not ready to stop.

HealthLab at SchmiedeY
Everyone who had the pleasure to participate in Lilli’s little Shiatsu HealthLab Prototype in 2016 will not need to read on, she is coming back, however there are news. Lilli will not only repeat her initiative to share her body work skills and make our lives and bodies better. In 2017 she decided to go deeper. Lilli will be joined by Gina Battistich, who is a Feldenkrais practitioner. Dr. Christof Murr will be the third LabLeader. Christof focuses on the change through movement and body-works introspection as well as practical application of body-work for your mental and physical health. Together they are planning to focus on the change through movement and body-works introspection and practical application of body-work for your mental as well as physical well being. See you in Hallein.

Y+? Lab at SchmiedeY
The Y+? Lab will focus on not only the "how" of creating media intensive performances, but also the "why". Mark Coniglio, media Artist, composer and creator of the software Isadora will be the LabLeader. Participants will share know-how about tools and techniques whilst simultaneously questioning the presence of digital media on stage, asking why it is there and considering how we might intensify and reconfigure it so as to open new doors of intellectual and emotional expression.

ThePoliticsOfGesturesLab at SchmiedeY
The international research project “The Entanglement between Gesture, Media and Politics” will host the Lab “The Politics of Gestures” at SchmiedeY. LabLeader is Florian Bettel.
“The Politics of Gestures” Lab will set up a research space, where the interdisciplinary team will pursue the following questions: How and under which circumstances does a gesture gain collective relevance, thus become political? How does media technology, as a main agent in that process, affect the human body? Two main questions will structure the first two days of the workshop: Is there a specific transitional point and if so, did this point shift since the massive spread of small media devices in the last ten years?
Possible work samples and case studies:
Histories of iconic gestures (“Black Panther”-fist, USA, 1960s; “Hands up, don’t shoot”, USA, since 2014; Erdem Gündüz: Standing Man, 2013)
Art work about the emergence and proliferation of political gestures (Timo Herbst: Play by Rules, 2015)
Performance dealing with the politics of exhibiting iconic cultural gestures (Laurie Young and Heike Schuppelius: Natural Habitat. 2011)
Ad How We wish to account for the presence and the emerging of new publics within our community by investigating the transition points between imperceptible, perceptible and political gestures through our complex methodological approach. We need to experience practice-based research in order to situate knowledge. Our collective work, which is based on chains of transformation, will enable a transgressional mode of discourse: By pushing our general research question through different methodologies and tools, the group will produce diverse materials and experiences. The object of interest will emerge as something sensually different, enabling various shifts in context and attached discourses.
Smiths can participate in the ongoing research within two formats:
a) Lectures: Invited artists and scholars will present their engagement in the politics of gestures and will discuss their findings with the audience.
b) Open Studio: During certain time slots Smiths will be invited to the lab to work with the research group.
