rewatching s1 of snw

wow, like is everything about una just super gay? the end of s1e3 is just a coming out story, but it hits different after s2e2. made me think of Johnnie Phelps and the possibly apocryphal story of her convincing Eisenhower not to "root out the lesbians" from the military b/c they were all the best and most decorated female members of the WAC. as well as all the respectability politics stuff.

Also getting much stronger una/la'an vibes this time watching, now that I know them better.

I also liked how the elysian kingdom book was introduced in that episode, too, since rukiya is a femslash shipper.

🦾 Trektober Day Eight: Nightmares 🤝 La'an Noonien-Singh & Una Chin-Riley 📖 Una and La'an bunk together on the MLK Jr after her rescue from the Gorn

Una is having a nightmare.

I clutch my stuffed tiger, Chief, bury my face in her soft fur, then climb down to the bottom bunk.

Sweat soaks Una's pajama shirt. The blanket's tangled in her long legs. She opens her mouth, eyes closed. Screaming, but silent.

When I scream like that, Una wakes me up. She whispers my name like a prayer, rubs my back until I fall asleep again.

My hand is small on her cheek, her skin damp under my palm. She startles awake, breath ragged.

"Who're you running from?" I whisper. "Who's coming to get you?"

"No one, La'an," she says, eyes sharp, scanning the room. "Come here."

I crawl to the back of her bunk, near the wall. Una kicks the blanket free, covers me. She reaches up, pulls Chief down, tucks her in with us.

"I'm sorry I woke you," Una says. "Did I say anything?"

I shake my head. She never does. Neither do I.

"Good. Let's try to sleep."

She tucks her hands beneath her cheek. It makes me giggle. People don't actually sleep like that. She shushes me, smiling.

Una means "one". Alone. Like me. Like us. I hug Chief and sleep.

La'an's Academy graduation is coming up. Una lets her know she'll be there.

[Sort of a sequel to a fic I'm writing about Una's Star Fleet graduation, but I had this scene in my head and it doesn't fit in the fic except as an addendum and so it is here]

“It’s just graduation, I don't mind being by myself." La'an said, as if graduating top of your class was just another day.

The young woman watched as Una's immaculately preened brows furrowed in disagreement through the subspace call view screen.

“I’ll be there.” The older woman insisted.

“It’s fine Chief, I won't be the only one there alone. And really it's just a formality, Did you know you don't actually have to be there to receive your commission? If I wanted to I could just get a shuttle and get a head start on work instead."

Una sighed as memories surfaced in her mind of similar words flowing from her own mouth on a subspace call to Chris long ago. La'an was far too like her for her own good.

“Everybody needs somebody," Well now she was just copying Chris. "And I’ll be there for you." Una replied firmly. "Chris commandeered a shuttle and crossed the galaxy on unearned shore leave for mine. I can make it from spacedock at Starbase V.” 

“You’re serious?” La’an raised an eyebrow. "He did that?"

She had never met the man, but Una talked about Chris a lot when recounting her exploits in Star Fleet. La'an had assumed for a long time they were married, or at least in a very long and serious relationship, even if it wasn't necessarily monogamous, but Una had clarified some time ago that they were purely friends. La'an didn't exactly buy it, but had never directly questioned her mentor about her relationship. Maybe it would make more sense when she finally met the man in the flesh, Maybe he had a revolting smell or a furry tail?

“Mmmhmm.” Una pursed her lips, not looking up from the PADD in front of her as she looked up the best route back to Earth for La'an's graduation.

“He must have liked you a lot Chief.” La'an added softly, gently prying without really prying.

“He did.” The older woman agreed, but did not expand. “And I like you a lot," She added, looking up at La'an firmly, conveying her sincerity in her eyes. "So I’ll be there next Saturday, that’s a promise.” 

“Okay.” La’an couldn’t help but slip a smile on her face in response.

Una grinned back. “See you in a week.” 

Before then, she needed to comm Chris and ask him where exactly he’d managed to get that star necklace he’d given her for her graduation. She needed another one, ASAP.

When I watched the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Melanie Scrofano appeared, I was like: "Who is this beautiful woman on my screen?". Then I searched on the Internet and saw in her philology the series Wynonna Earp, which I had already heard of so I decided to stop and watch it at another time.

This month I decided to start watching and I've already watched 3 entire seasons (I watched the first one in just one day), because, what the hell, this series is incredible and it doesn't get the recognition it deserves.

Ps.: Now I live and breathe this character, because she's a bitch with a badass gun and gorgeous hair.

But... What is your vision of what Una would be like in the Mirrorverse? Is this something you've thought about or would like to see?

i've never thought about it, lol. I love the zaniness of mirror universe episodes, though! she would definitely be super openly gay if it happened -- very common Mirror universe plot, to be more open about sexuality. I can totally see La'an/Una being big there.

I'm a multishipper and I always think it's funny when two ships that are "in opposition" of each other have the same exact argument for something. For example I ship both Spock/La'an and Kirk/La'an and one thing I've noticed is both ships use parallels to Pike and Una in the sense of if Pike and Una then Spock or Kirk and La'an because La'an is to Una what Spock or Kirk are to Pike therefore if you ship PikeUna you should ship Spock/La'an or Kirk/La'an. I'm not sure the shippers of these two groups know they used the same arguments and story beats but they do and it's amusing. Another is Spaple, Uhotty and Spuhura (all of which I also ship) all like to call back to implications from TOS to validate their ships over the others because Spock and Uhura flirt, Chaple had a long standing crush on Spock and Uhura and Scotty were implied to be really close in the movies but when all three do it, it kind of becomes meaningless like "yeah, yeah, the TOS validation, we've all seen it". It's just a fun pattern to watch at least when it doesn't get messy (and sometimes when it does because they'll say the exact same thing like it proved something and then the other will argue back like it did).
