Summaries under the cut
The Mistmantle Chronicles by M. I. McAllister
On a night of riding stars, a tiny squirrel is found abandoned and close to death on a distant beach. Adopted and raised by a kindly, eccentric squirrel, Urchin has no idea of his powerful destiny or of the way he will influence the island of Mistmantle.
The rule of the good King Brushen and Queen Spindle is threatened by an evil plot from within the court. When their young prince is found murdered, the isle is thrown into turmoil. Behind the scenes, the wicked Lord Husk and Lady Aspen are determined to take control. But to underestimate the power of the islanders and the ancient prophecies is a big mistake...
Larklight by Philip Reeve
Arthur (Art) Mumby and his irritating sister Myrtle live with their father in the huge and rambling house, Larklight, travelling through space on a remote orbit far beyond the Moon. One ordinary sort of morning they receive a correspondence informing them that a gentleman is on his way to visit, a Mr Webster. Visitors to Larklight are rare if not unique, and a frenzy of preparation ensues. But it is entirely the wrong sort of preparation, as they discover when their guest arrives, and a Dreadful and Terrifying (and Marvellous) adventure begins. It takes them to the furthest reaches of Known Space, where they must battle the evil First Ones in a desperate attempt to save each other - and the Universe.
La Quete d'Ewilan by Pierre Bottero
Adventure by Enid Blyton
For Philip, Dinah, Lucy-Ann and Jack, the holiday in Cornwall is everything they'd hope for - until they begin to realize that something very sinister is taking place on the mysterious Isle of Gloom.
But they're not prepared for the dangerous adventure that awaits them in the abandoned copper mines and secret tunnels beneath the sea.
Just William by Richmal Crompton
Whether it's trying to arrange a marriage for his sister or taking a job as a boot boy as step one in his grand plan to run away, Just William manages to cause chaos wherever he goes.
Storybound by Marissa Burt
In the land of Story, children go to school to learn to be characters: a perfect Hero, a trusty Sidekick, even the most dastardly Villain. They take classes on Outdoor Experiential Questing and Backstory, while adults search for full-time character work in stories written just for them.
In our world, twelve-year-old Una Fairchild has always felt invisible. But all that changes when she stumbles upon a mysterious book buried deep in the basement of her school library, opens the cover, and suddenly finds herself transported to the magical land of Story.
But Story is not a perfect fairy tale. Una’s new friend Peter warns her about the grave danger she could face if anyone discovers her true identity. The devious Tale Keeper watches her every move. And there are whispers of a deadly secret that seems to revolve around Una herself....
The Cooper Kids Adventures by Frank E. Peretti
When teenagers Jay and Lila Cooper and their archaeologist father travel to Nepur, an uninviting land of deserts and danger, they must search to uncover the truth behind an ancient legend. Locals claim that inside a dark cavern called the Dragon's Throat is a forbidden Door that brings certain death to anyone who tries to open it.
Armed with the knowledge that God is more powerful than any legend or curse, Jay and Lila plunge down into the Dragon's Throat, determined to find out what awaits them on the other side of the Door. This daring tale will have you on the edge of your seat.
Nim by Wendy Orr
A girl. An iguana. An island. And e-mail. Meet Nim–a modern-day Robinson Crusoe! She can chop down bananas with a machete, climb tall palm trees, and start a fire with a piece of glass. So she’s not afraid when her scientist dad sails off to study plankton for three days, leaving her alone on their island. Besides, it’s not as if no one’s looking after her–she’s got a sea lion to mother her and an iguana for comic relief. She also has an interesting new e-mail pal. But when her father’s cell-phone calls stop coming and disaster seems near, Nim has to be stronger and braver than she’s ever been before.
And she’ll need all her friends to help her.
The Dragonfly Pool by Eva Ibbotson
Tally Hamilton is furious to hear she is being sent from London to a horrid, stuffy boarding school in the countryside. And all because of the stupid war. But Delderton Hall is a far more" "unusual and " interesting" place than Tally ever imagined, and she soon falls in love with its eccentric staff and pupils. Now she's even organizing an exciting school trip to the kingdom of Bergania . . . although Tally never expected to meet the "prince."
Prince Karil hates his life at the palace and he is only truly happy when he escapes to the dragonfly pool, a remote spot in the forests of Bergania. Then Karil meets a feisty English girl who brings the promise of adventure. But his country is under threat, and the prince soon looks to his new friend Tally for survival as well as friendship . . .
Mandie by Lois Gladys Leppard
Mandie Shaw, almost a teenager, is certain God no longer loves her as she watches her father being lowered into his grave. Mandie's move into a neighbor family's home, when her mother remarries, does not soften her grief. Her only comfort is the promise from her father's faithful Cherokee friend, Uncle Ned, to watch out for her and be a friend. Will Mandie be able to escape her new and nearly intolerable home situation? Will she find her long-lost family? Will the mysterious key unlock the door to the secret tunnel and her own family's history?

Group A Round 1
[image ID: the first image is of The Guardian. they wear a pink helmet, obscuring their face. they're swinging a sword. the second image is of Salim Condo, a young Black man with a lip piercing and orange beads in his locs. end ID]
The Guardian
The Guardian is a fellow veteran of the event known as the Shattering, a grand and terrible war which resulted in both the production and the laying low of myriad massive titans. Both the Guardian and the PC (the titular Drifter) are afflicted by a chronic disease that makes them cough up blood and hallucinate. Their mutual goal is to locate and destroy a being known only as Judgement, a physical embodiment of the vile hubris that caused the Shattering in the first place.
Salim Condo
He's the childhood best friend of the protagonist. They end up in a parallel world where magic exists. He's funny and extremely loyal. He ends up under the tutelage of a Marchombre, sort of rogues who march to the beat of their own drums, and develops his already good acrobatics. He also learns he can turn into a wolf and gets stuck as one for about a third of a book. He's sometimes jealous and impetuous but the most caring soul in all of the books.

Ask Game for us Self-proclaimed BOOK WORMS: 22, 25, & 41, please!
Thanks for the ask!
22. Favorite example of a Chosen One trope in a book.
It's usually not a trop I like much... does Legendborn count? I really liked how it handled it. Otherwise, maybe The Final Empire. Or oh wait, The Unspoken Name! (in any case, I guess I like the trope most when it's toyed with haha)
25. Favorite Middle Grade book(s).
La Quete d'Ewilan by Pierre Bottero! aka those french books.
41. When you get ready for a week long trip to somewhere how many books do you download/pack inside the suitcase?
Depends on where I am going tbh. Sometimes I know I won't have time to read so one book is enough. Usually I'd say up to three, but also thanks to Libby my beloved I don't actually need to plan that far ahead, I can just leave with one and get however more I need as tie goes by xD

I received them a while ago but I thought I would do a bit more advertising for the Ewilan's Quest animated series! Here are my rewards from the Kickstarter campaign that ended a while back:
Everything is absolutely beautiful, the art book is gorgeous and I love all of it. I also have an A3 map of Gwendalavir but I need to buy a frame for it.
I am so glad that Andarta Pictures is making this adaptation, one because they're doing it with love, and two because this show will allow more people to learn about Pierre Bottero's world and stories since they're doing it in both French and English.
If you want to know more about the plot, you can read my review of the book series if you're interested.
And if you want to learn more about the show, I invite you to check out the official Twitter and Instagram accounts for the show.
You can also support the project by donating here, through the Kickstarter page

My favorites books ever in the entire world, by Pierre Bottero, are on their way to have an animated adaptation that would help spread this wonderful story to a new public !
The Kickstarter was entirely funded in 3 hours but it’s still possible to participate and unlock a lot of awesome stuffs while helping the creators prove to potential broadcasters that the audience is here already !
I think it’s a really great project and they take into consideration the other fans of the books and I’ve yet to be disappointed by any of the character designs or landscapes they released. Since I’m really a huge, huge fan of this universe which accompanied me during all my teenage years and was (and still is) a safety blanket of sort I’m very critical about adaptations of it but this one... I like it !
And for those who knows nothing about Ewilan and her friends, their story take place in a parallel universe with magic, friendship, awesome scary creatures, awesome fluffy creatures, found family, character development and so many wonderful wholesome things I could list them for hours ♥. Please consider supporting :3.

Alors oui, plothole, Merwyn?

The Contestants Are Here!
Thank you for your patience, I'm now ready to announce our contestants for the Obscure Character Showdown! There are 300 characters, split up into 6 groups of 50.
Here's how the schedule will work: Day 1 is Group A Round 1 Part 1, Day 2 is Group A Round 1 Part 2, Day 3 is Group B Round 1 Part 1, Day 4 is Group B Round 1 Part 2, Day 5 is Group C Round 1 Part 1, and so on and so forth until we reach Group F Round 1 Part 2, and then the next day we'll fold back over for Group A Round 2. I'm splitting up the rounds because tumblr can interpret posting many polls at once as spamming, and each group contains 25 polls, so. 13 one day, 12 the next.
I expect to start polls by Wednesday, May 31, but I may be a little later than that. I'll keep you updated.
The polls will be tagged with 'obscurecharactershowdown,' 'obscure poll,' and their group letter and round number.
Under the cut is the groups and matchups. Thank you all for your submissions, and I'm sorry if your submission didn't get in! If it was a submission for your OC, a mythological figure, a Real Life Thing, an album character, a commercial character, etc, then you may not be out of the running yet. Be patient, I have something else I'm working out!
Please don't come into my inbox, replies, dms, etc, and tell me that a character I chose isn't actually obscure at all. No one's media experience is universal, and from my own experiences, I picked to the best of my ability.

La Quête d'Ewilan is the first book series I picked for myself, back when i was 9, and i still love it to this day, so getting merch from it after all these years is amazing, and I hope the animated adaptation comes through so I can finally bother English speakers with it all

La Quête d'Ewilan #1-3 by Pierre Bottero (March 2021)
Camille is a gifted teen whose life changes when she accidentally stumbles into the wold of Gwendalavir with her friend Salim. There, frightening creatures called Ts'liches identify her as Ewilan and try to kill her. Originally from this world, she inherited a prodigious gift that could prove to be a deciding instrument in her people's fight for power, freedom and dignity. Aided in her quest by the General of the Imperial Army and an old scholar, will Camille be able to save her home country?
Would I recommend it to anyone? Absolutely, yes, those books are some of my favorites partly because of the nostalgia but also because the story is amazing.
Level of (dis)satisfaction based on the summary and my expectations? The very first time I read those books, I liked them way less than I do now. Now when I re-read them, I see the flaws, the small issues with Salim's character (the only Black character, Ellana is only described as dark-skinned) and the writing style isn't as beautiful and poetic as it is in later series, but that doesn't stop me from loving them.
My thoughts on it? I had read Le Pacte des Marchombres a few years before I picked up La Quête d'Ewilan and they'd had a huge impact on me: the writing, the characters, the world, the action... So I was slightly underwhelmed by Ewilan's adventures, which are tamer than Ellana's. After a few dozen re-readings, I tried reading La Quête again, then I discovered Les Mondes d'Ewilan and I think that's when I became addicted to Pierre Bottero's universe. I continued discovering it with L'Autre, then Les Ames Croisées and even today I keep discovering links and small details between all the books that I hadn't noticed before.
In the end, eventhough I think Le Pacte is vastly superior to all the others, La Quête still holds a special place in my heart.
Andarta Pictures is currently working on an animated adaptation of those books (and hopefully the others if the project is successful) so please go give them some love on Twitter or Instagram. Thank you!
French version under the cut
Merci !
