it’s doing my head in seeing people compare the way the LA fires and the flooding in western NC was handled. the reason we had such a shit show after Hurricane Helene is because it effected a relatively impoverished and isolated area and it was an unprecedented natural disaster in the area, not to mention how much our state government loathes us. like yeah, of course they’re more on the ball with body recovery and identification in LA, it’s a heavily populated city with a lot more resources and more experts. you could funnel your rage towards the way Helene was treated into funding emergency resources and advocating for the people who were displaced but you’d rather start conspiracies about storms eliminating red voters and those evil dems only giving families $750 even though the Republican Party is the one that reduced FEMA funding.

"As hundreds of thousands of Californians grieve the loss of their homes and communities in the face of record-breaking wildfires this week, countless have shown up to help.

Officials report that an estimated 10,000 structures and more than 35,000 acres have been in the Palisades and Eaton fires, with over 180,000 forced to evacuate in recent days.

Aid agencies and nonprofits have stepped in to provide food, temporary shelter, and other essentials, but for many who have lost everything, the rebuilding process begins immediately.

Seconds Market, a secondhand clothing organization based in Los Angeles, normally buys gently used clothes from locals and hosts pop-up sales in the LA area for secondhand shoppers.

But in the wake of this devastation, Seconds Market decided to use its platform to connect Californians in need with clothing donors from across the country.

“Have spare clothes lying around? A Poshmark or Depop pile? We’ll connect you with someone who needs them,” the group shared on Instagram on Wednesday.

“Wearing secondhand is hot, but donating to your community is hotter.” 

Their post directs followers to a sign-up link where people can request support or volunteer to donate items. Folks are then paired up, based on clothing size, age, and gender to ensure that people get items that are appropriate for them.

Over the course of 48 hours, 20,000 donors had signed up, according to the Seconds Market Instagram page.

Iluka, the founder of Seconds Market, shared that the match program is different from a donation drop-off, helping people get their needs met by having items shipped directly to them, rather than using the labor required to sort through donated items.

That said, she shared in an Instagram story that she was hoping to set up a free “store” so that fire victims could shop for donated items in the coming days and weeks, as well.

“This match initiative was a way for me to connect friends who wanted to help LA victims directly. Helping one person would’ve been a win in my book,” Iluka wrote in a statement.

“Since ‘launch’ we’ve had 20,000 (and counting) of you from across the U.S. sign up to donate — directly from your closets — wardrobe to wardrobe.”

Donors are responsible for the cost of packaging and shipping items after being connected with someone in need — and donations are not limited to clothing, but rather anything they can offer their “match.”

Experts suggest that major influxes of donations can be overwhelming to folks immediately working to rebuild their lives, though anecdotal evidence from others who have survived house fires suggests that it helps to be given something right away instead of having to go shopping amid recovery.

It’s that immediate need Iluka hopes to fill with Seconds Market.

She wrote on Instagram: “[This is] giving 20,000 people the opportunity to have one less thing to worry about when they wake up today.”"

If anyone has a little to spare, a friend of a friend has lost everything to the fires currently ripping through LA:

On Tuesday night, we left, thinking we would be back the next day like normal. We packed a change of clothes and important documents, thinking we didn't need to worry about all our memories and sentimental items left behind. 

In one night, everything was gone. The only home my siblings and I have ever known. Everything we owned; gone. The school where we grew up and where my mom works burned to the ground. Luckily, we have each other, but everything we've ever known is gone. 

I know so many people are going through the same thing, but any little bit helps. Thank you.

i've become too attached to my own spec so it's becoming its own post. so as a callback to last time bobby was forced out of work in season 2 and everyone came to him to complain about tyrannical interim cap han i want everyone going to him to check up on him in his involuntary retirement slash recovery which clearly devolves into each of them complaining spectacularly about gerard. but whilst this is happening in each scene bobby's trying out a new hobby. so like buck comes over and starts complaining about gerard being homophobic to hen and how it's absolutely disgusting and blatant and he's ordered this super secret spy pen to try and capture some of the harassment tp send to the higher ups meanwhile bobby's knitting a really terrible scarf like you can't really tell it's a scarf so we'll just call it indiscernible project #5 (the background is just full of yarn and half-finished projects). hen comes over to essentially curse gerard out for the triplewhammy of racism, homophobia and sexism - aisha eats the most eloquent rant in the world about and all of us quote it and write odes to it and get it tattooed on us. bobby is giving her his full attention as he tries out a bit of claywork, the scene ends with him offering up one of his deformed pots for her to smash to maybe help her let a little bit of anger out (hen accepts but she says it's only to put the poor thing out of its misery, bobby smiles to himself because it feels like old times in the firehouse). eddie comes to complain about how difficult it is watching everyone be hurt ny gerard over and over(he's fully compartmentalised the discrimination he's getting) and also how buck's not really seeming to grasp that gerard is being homophobic to him as well as hen (he's super fixated on this he has no idea why and he's unwilling to examine it too closely) bobby is attempting a still life portrait of a fire extinguisher, it's actually pretty good. chimney comes over and goes on an absolute cunt-serving, dick-gagging, he ATE monologue where he takes barely a breath the whole time and kenneth choi gets an emmy on the spot for it. bobby is attempting to make his own jewellery (he's working on a little bracelet for jee-yun at this point). dragons i'm asking for a flight to LA and $1,000,000 to make this happen

A little rambling about my bucktommy/madney high school AU (this is basically about the first chapter lol)

Tommy and Howie are students at LA High. Tommy's a junior and Howie's a sophomore, so there's really no reason for them to cross paths often on a large school campus, until their was a fire in the chemistry lab and Howie pulled Tommy out and saved his life.

After Tommy's speedy recovery, they quickly go from strangers to best friends and make big plans for their first summer vacation as friends...but then Howie's mom passes away on the last day of school.

Tommy's the only close friend Howie has so he's there to comfort him for the entire summer.

They let the whole summer pass them by, sulking in Tommy's basement, drowning out the sounds of Tommy's parents arguing with music.

Before the summer ends, Tommy and Howie spend the last day on the beach. Howie breaks down, and Tommy tells him that he's gay.

They start the new school year with new outlooks on their own lives. When Howie becomes president of the Glee club, Tommy worries that Howie found a new circle and just won't need him anymore and he'll be alone again. Sure, Tommy has the football team but they're not his friends. The coach is a piece of shit and the locker room is just a boy's club of idiots.

He plans to join the army when he graduates.

When a new sophomore and his senior sister transfer to LA High at the beginning of the second semester, everything changes for the both of them.

things are not great in LA right now, fam.

my husband and I got lucky: we didn't have to evacuate. however, we are currently sheltering a friend (+ their cats) who did, and the helplessness and dislocation they are experiencing is wrenching to witness. their parents may lose their house; fires are still burning on their street. my mother-in-law is staying with her sister. every day we receive news about people we know, and people we don't, who lost everything.
