I just watched a YouTube video about A Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, and there was something this guy said that really stood out to me.

He said that after seeing the first Hunger Games movie, he loved it so much that he asked his mother to buy him the books, and if he hadn't done that… he would never have picked up a book and read it… and how now, he loves reading...

It doesn't matter if people didn't like the Mortal Instrument movie… I loved it… i loved the storyline, i loved the characters, i love the Institute... and I would never have read the books if it hadn't been because I wanted to know how it continued after finding out about the cancellation of the sequel

And now I love to read… I can't imagine not reading and missing out on so many fantastic worlds, stories and characters that had made me laugh and cry… and dream...

Saw a post basically saying that because of Lucy Gray’s relevance to snakes and Coriolanus’ relevance to songbirds, she actually represents the snakes and he represents the songbirds. It then went on to say that Lucy Gray is also a songbird and Coriolanus is also a snake. Their conclusion was that either no one will ever know which it is, or that they are both, well, both. I agree that it’s a double entendre, but not in the same way.

I can’t find that post, so forgive me for not reblogging, or for any misrememberings. I also want to make it clear that I respect OP’s take, but here are my thoughts:

At the start of the book, it's obvious that Lucy Gray is the songbird and Coriolanus is the snake. Because, well Lucy Gray sings and is colourful and vibrant, and Coriolanus is pretty snaky. Pretty sure he's actually described this way in thg trilogy, and if not we at least know about his whole poison thing from that already.

But as the story unfolds, the literal songbirds and snakes are introduced. Suzanne Collins makes a very strong point about Lucy Gray having an affinity with snakes right from the get-go, and this continues to become more and more obvious. I don't think that makes her the snake--rather, amongst other things, it is symbolic of how she both attracts and uses Snow.

Of course, there's also the jabberjays/mockingjays that play a heavy role in Snow's story. Once again, I don't believe that means he's the songbird, rather that it is, again, symbolic of how he in return uses Lucy Gray. Additionally, the songbirds sort of push him down his evil arc, which can be symbolic of how his obsession with Lucy Gray does the same in a way.

So--in my opinion--the two coexisting meanings of the title are:

Lucy Gray is the songbird and Coriolanus is the snake, and this is a story about them, their love, their lack thereof, or whatever it is

literal songbirds and literal snakes are both highly influential devices and motifs in the story

Actually, yk what, forget double.

You can also interpret it to be:

Lucy gray is the songbird and literal snakes are highly relevant to her--this is a story about her

Coriolanus is the snake and literal songbirds are highly relevant to him--this is a story about him

Lucy gray is the songbird and Coriolanus is the snake, and both literal songbirds and literal snakes are highly relevant to them both--this is a story about the two individuals (I suppose this is pretty much the same as the original double entendre i proposed, but still)

Can I also say, massive appreciation for Suzanne choosing to use the word, ‘Ballad’ in the title. Sounds poetic and is very relevant to the story (stating the obvious here but still). However exactly you interpret the title, I think we can all agree that Suzanne Collins could not have chosen a better name for this story.

It would be so funny to me if all the tributes made it into the games (or just the 14 from canon if that’s more your style) and one of them picked up a pickaxe from the pile of weapons. Then they realized a little something:

They’re in an arena. That has a ton of weak points in the wall because of the bombing. And they have until all but one of them is dead. That’s a lot of time if they play their cards right.

So they use the fact that there are no microphones to recruit the tributes they come across into their scheming and within 20 minutes all tributes are informed and on-board through divide and conquer tactics. So now they hastily cobble together a plan, which isn’t difficult because there’s 24(/14) of them and two are literal child geniuses. Someone was gonna think of something good and there’s plenty of peer review. They spend about two or so hours off-camera figuring things out while Reaper patrols the main part of the arena all menacingly to avoid suspicion. Then they get to business on getting out.

Lamina and Treech use their climbing skills to observe which parts of the outside of the arena are more heavily patrolled and decide on which spot would be the best bet, then relay this information to the others. Then the strongest tributes (especially Jessup) start using the pickaxe to create a hole low in that part of the wall. The other tributes all collect as much food as possible and entertain the Capitol until the makeshift tunnel is finished. The older tributes all alternate peeking outside and at night a small group of them goes scouting to figure out how to get away from the arena and get their hands on a map. One more day is spent in the arena (with some rubble covering up the hole on the outside of the arena whenever they aren’t using it so they won’t get busted) planning out their route and strategy, and then they’re off. With all their preparation, they easily manage to lead the Capitol on a wild goose chase and make it back home no problem. They possibly build a village in the middle of Panem (between districts) and jump on the trains to go back home for visits to their family and friends until they’re unrecognizable enough to blend back into the district.

Since they covered up the hole in the wall, the Capitol never finds out how they escaped.
