your voice rings through the gym, stopping the conversation that Seijoh‘s team was having. said boy turns his head to look at you, a scowl pulling on his lips when you shouted his name like that in front of everyone. he can’t be too mad though, not when you’re waving so enthusiastically, obviously happy to see him.

he grumbles something under his breath before breaking apart from the group to walk over to you, ignoring the gazes of his nosey teammates. they’ve never seen you before, and he certainly hasn’t said anything about you. they’d definitely remember if the Mad Dog had mentioned someone, especially someone as attractive as you.

in reality, you two have been dating for a few months now, though you’re keeping it quiet. he doesn’t necessarily mind anyone knowing, he just hasn’t specifically told his team because he doesn’t want them teasing him about it.

when he reaches you, he grunts in greeting, and you smile as you extend his jacket he lent to you the other day.

"here, i washed it," you chirp, looking much too nice to be talking to someone like Kyotani. he shakes his head at your offer though, waving off the jacket.

"keep it, i never wear it anyway," he grumbles, keeping his voice low so his teammates don’t overhear. his words make you smile though, and you nod eagerly, holding the clothing to your chest.

he can hear his teammates whispering amongst themselves, trying to guess the relationship between the two of you and how you know him. it irks him, and he’s trying his best not to just drag you off somewhere a bit more private to talk to you. he knows that would only make them even more curious though, so he’s stuck standing a respectable distance away from you while listening to his teammates gossip.

"do you wanna walk home together?"

your voice brings his attention back to you, his ears drowning them out as he listens to your sweet request. practice is nearly over anyway, and he knows you were probably waiting for him in the first place, which makes his chest feel… funny.

he only nods in response, gesturing for you to wait outside so he can grab his stuff. there’s no way he’s letting his teammates near you, they’d only bombard you with stupid questions.

"okay! hurry up," you urge, smiling at him in a way that makes his earlier annoyance immediately melt away.

before you turn to leave, you tip toe and give him a quick peck on the cheek, one that has nearly his whole team gawking and gasping. it leaves him a bit surprised too, and he can feel his ears get warm from embarrassment. you look cheeky though, practically skipping out of the gym to wait outside for him like you didn’t just shell shock half the team.

as soon as you’re out of sight, an uproar follows as his teammates surround him, immediately asking questions and demanding details. he just rolls his eyes, huffing out short answers as he goes to gather his stuff.

Kyotani Hcs!!

He works on his anger issues after the loss to Karasuno but when he tries his breathing exercises he cries 'Angry Tears' TM

The team is trying so hard to be a positive environment but it makes them laugh so hard

He runs his hands over his buzz cut all the time. It's all he does. Yahaba thinks it's cute.

His canines are unnaturally sharp, and it scares the underclassman

He's not a good fighter in the technique sense, but he's feral and normally wins bc he fights dirty

He really likes birds and has been bird-watching multiple times. He even has guides to the native species in the different parts of Japan.

aoba johsai pet headcanons

oikawa literally begged his parents for a pet bird when he was in middle school, even though he’s rarely home to take care of it (his parents take care of it). the bird is called tweety and oikawa’s private snapchat story (tooru’s hoes; has all of aoba johsei’s team and many of his volleyball rivals) has tons of videos of him making fake retro/beatboxing/2016 youtube channel intro noises while spinning his phone around his bird. the birds like “…🧍🐥🐦🦜 what is this giant creature doing.”

iwaizumi had a bulldog who he defends with the world. the dog will literally try to eat oikawa, forcing that poor man to climb a tree while screaming, and iwaizumi will be like “oh he don’t bite. he’s chill don’t worry.” the worst part is that the bulldog loves everyone else on the team but hates oikawa. oikawa uses it as a sign that either he’s too sexy for every being on the planet that the universe sent him a mere pet in spite of him or that aliens are real and sent this demon dog as a way to lure him away.

matsukawa has three pet fish; one for himself and the other two for his siblings. their names are, respectively; titty, princess sparkles, and sharknado. he’s disappointed that his siblings didn’t get the memo. he often spends his time wrestling with iwaizumi’s dog because of this. whenever the others brag about their adorable pets, he says ‘well at least i have a clean car that I can drive’ to shut them up. iwaizumi and hanamaki always respond with ‘well fair enough’ while oikawa glitches out of existence like ‘we- you can’t just- that’s not fai- i have volleyball!’

hanamaki has an orange cat that never gives him a break. the cat will hide inside the couch until hanamaki’s mid-breakdown searching for it while thinking it died or ran away. the cat has purposely shat on his laptop multiple times. his teachers are tired of the excuse ‘my cat destroyed my homework/laptop, so I didn’t finish the work’ but it’s always true. the cat has also clawed up $200 shoes before. hanamaki’s private snapchat story (‘satan’s furry little shitbag’) where it’s just him recording what his cat has done with the caption of ‘orange cat tings’ or ‘bruh ur scaring da hoes’ or something similar.

kyoutani has two dogs (as previously mentioned), and they’re both the sweetest pets in the world. he unexpectedly gets hit on a lot because he looks less threatening with two happy dogs dragging him along, and he has to awkwardly reject people while trying to play fetch with his dogs. multiples times he’s sat down in front of his dogs like ‘listen here guys. you are actively destroying my reputation. i need you to be mean, cold hearted, and ruthless from now on, okay?” and the dogs will just have these dumb, happy looks on their face while panting, and then lick his face. he responds by sighing and then cuddle/wrestling his dogs because they are the most important thing to him.

watari has an elaborate hamster set up for his four hamsters. it takes up a whole wall of his bedroom and there’s this whole wheel and upwards maze for them. he’s incredibly precise when he cleans the cage and feeds them. he brags about it often, and makes sure he has a hamster on his head or in his lap whenever he video calls someone. their names are turbo, milk, porkchop, and sticky. he let a random english word generator name them and then didn’t put any extra thought into it.

yahaba has that crusty white dog that’s prim and proper. he regularly washes it and feeds it, even though he’s upset that his dog started to hate him after he dyed his hair. he’s been like ‘even though my hair isn’t white, i’m still me! don’t hate me now!’ whenever he has to wash his dog. his dog also has separation anxiety so yahaba wakes up most mornings with his dogs ass in his face became the dog refuses to sleep anywhere that isn’t touching her owner (even after yahaba spent the money and put the effort into making a literally royalty passage/mini bedroom for his dog to sleep comfortably (yahaba now just throws his shoes onto it because he’s accepted that his dog will never sleep on it)).

kindaichi has no pets so he often visits this giant aquarium near his house. he’s gone so often that, more often than not, they let him in for free because they know all he’s going to do is stare at the dolphins for an hour and then try to over compensation financially for it. he’s gone so frequently that he’s been allowed to meet the dolphins in person and pet them. the dolphins adore him because his hairstyle reminds them of their fin. the employees see how sad he gets when he sits by the dolphins, so they started actively tutoring him on how to take care of them, in hopes that he’ll work a part time job there.

kunimi also has no pets, but he’s fine with that because he hates doing any form of work and also hates messes. though he does appreciate sitting in parks and watching squirrels run around because it brings him peace. he started internally naming all of them after his teammates after a while. out of the team, he favors yahabas crusty white dog the most because the dog loves attention and is fluffy, though he would never admit that out loud.

Kyotani doesn't know how to cook very many different foods, but by God is he a chef when it comes to making his 3 go to meals.

Guilt

This is chapter 8 of my fic Not Everyone Survives (But I will do the Best I Can). Tags and other chapters can be found here!

Guilt is a beast that comes in many forms. Everyone experiences it differently. Guilt is a pain that can be often misplaced. It has a habit of multiplying. If not dealt with, it has the power to consume.

Guilt consumed Keiji completely. It was what ran his mind as he patched Koutarou up, blaming everyone as he completed his tasks with a systematic efficiency; disinfecting all of his wounds— the bandages he binded with were discarded, leaving the man in a sports bra. He cleaned the gashes on his side, the wounds that seared his torso from his right shoulder to his left hip, all of the deep claw marks in his arms, the severe bite wounds in his legs, gave stitches where they were needed, and eventually got the guts to look his lover in the bruised face while he grabbed the bandages.

He’d almost lost this face. Forever. All over some silly argument.

It would’ve been his fault, if he had. It was his fault to begin with, for saying that shit to him. For arguing with him, for losing his filter, for letting his anger manipulate his mouth. He couldn’t stand himself. He hardly ever could.

Then a stir from the man below him wiped all thought.

Everything hurt. He couldn’t take a deep breath but he could breathe a bit more deeply than he could with the bandages. A soreness settled deep into his bones, with a dull, persistent throb that seemed to resonate with every heartbeat. His head was pounding, each breath reminding him that agony was a clingy, sticky thing that stayed with you long after the original cause. He didn’t try to open his eyes yet. There was something holding his bicep, something being wrapped around it. Was he dead? Without even telling Keiji he loved him after fighting with him.

Without even apologizing for being a murderer.

He opened his eyes slowly, hesitantly, but eventually got sight of the ravenette who’d been mid-bandaging his arm, those blue eyes on him.

His breath hitched, and it hurt. His vision blurred, and he sniffled. That voice he thought he’d never hear again uttered his name:

“Kou?”

And he was sobbing. It hurt his ribs so bad, crying, and it hurt his side and all over, really, but he couldn’t make it stop. Loud cries that had him screwing his eyes shut as the ravenette hugged him close and whispered comfort and cried with him and apologized and he apologized too because he was the guilty party and he’d almost died he’d almost lost Keiji over that stupid argument and stupid Vega and the stupid tank and he was so stupid stupid stupid—

“Oh wait, Kou, breathe, you’re gonna hurt yourself!”

“I— sorry, Kaash— didn’t mean—“ he managed to get out between sobs and coughs. “Don’t…hate me—“

“What— no, Kou, nonono I don’t hate you, I could never hate you. Stop trying to talk for a second, okay? I’m gonna help you sit up. It’ll probably hurt a little, because Crown’s painkillers aren’t as strong as ours, but it’s okay. Alright? On three. One, two…”

Pain lanced up his torso and he whined, the ravenette shushing him and eventually letting him lean on him. Gentle hands soothed down his shoulders and across his collarbone, directing him to breathe in.

He had to think really hard about breathing, and it still ached like hell. It took a while for him to be able to breathe, Keiji talking him through it softly.

“In…good. Out. There we go…”

By the time that he could breathe normally again, he was tired. He turned and pressed his nose into jet black hair, those arms falling to wrap around his waist.

“Y’took my bandages off?”

“Yeah, Kou, I didn’t want you dying ‘cause you couldn’t breathe.”

“Mm. M’sorry for arguin’ with you.”

“Don’t be, baby, I’m sorry for being a dick. I truly didn’t mean what I said about Komi. When I get upset, I just kinda say things. If I were upset with you about Komi, I would have told you way sooner.”

“M’sorry for…almost dyin’.”

“That’s not your fault, it’s mine,” Keiji murmured, rubbing circles in his skin with his thumb.

“No it wasn’t, you didn’t tell me to go out by myself, and—“ he ran out of air, hacking and coughing. Fuck he probably wouldn’t be allowed to bind for a while.

“You have to take talking slowly, okay?”

He nodded, exhaling through his nose.

“And you didn’t… know I’d get in a situation. And you didn’t tell me to yell at you that morning,” he said, taking more measured breaths between phrases.

“You didn’t tell me to yell at you either.”

“I needed to be yelled at. I…I murdered Komi.”

“Kou, you had to do that.”

He shook his head.

“No, listen, if you hadn’t killed it, all four of us would’ve died and Torch would probably wouldn’t exist, because they’d have collapsed. Who’d have been captain? Konoha?”

Laughable.

He shrugged. After a few moments, he spoke again.

“Keiji?”

“Mhm?”

“I love you.”

“I love you too.”

A kiss was pressed to his cheek, and he tried to turn more, causing the ravenette to look up. After some twisting that made his ribs and his new wounds scream in protest, he managed to capture his boyfriend’s lips in his.

He didn’t have them for long, though. The moment breathing started feeling a bit strained, Keiji gently pushed him off.

“I thought I wouldn’t get to tell you again,” Koutarou admitted. “And I hadn’t said it that morning. And I thought…”

“I know. I’m just glad you’re safe.”

“Did…did Terushima…?”

Those arms around him tensed, and he had his answer. Guilt flamed him, scorched him, ate him alive. The hot flames of it licked at him, and he hadn’t a choice but to let it consume him.

Kentarou burst into the room, and he looked up. The blonde was fuming.

“He’s dead.”

“I’m—“

“I don’t want your apology, I want it to be you instead,” the other man hissed, striding across the room. Keiji was standing up in an instant, and Iwaizumi could be heard down the hall. Those eyebrows were furrowed, face screwed up, but the eyes wouldn’t look at him— wouldn’t face him. The dark skinned hands shook, waving around erratically as Kyoutani spoke. “You killed him, because your stupid ass decided to go out all alone and get ganged up on and he decided to play hero. It should’ve been you.”

Yeah. It should’ve. He kind of wished it was.

“That’s enough,” Keiji snapped.

“He’s the reason Yuuji is dead!”

“Oh, and antagonizing him is definitely going to bring him back,” Akaashi snarked.

“I’m gonna—“

Iwaizumi ran into the room, yelling.

“Kyou, stop it! Cmon, leave them alone. They’re going home soon.”

“He’s the reason Yuuji is dead,” Kyoutani repeated, a hurt hatred leaking from every syllable.

“Kyou,” Iwa said simply, almost a plea. The blonde seemed to want to say more, but after a few moments, he sighed heavily.

“I’m not fucking apologizing.”

“I’m not asking you to. I’m just asking you to leave them alone.”

The other stormed out of the room, and Iwa gave an apology for the man before walking out after him.

Footsteps raced down the hall, and Kai and Eve ran in.

“Kou!!!” Kai cried, throwing herself onto him and squeezing him. It hurt but he tried his best not to show that, simply hugging her back as she started crying. “Why did you go out by yourself?! You could’ve left us, you big idiot!”

“She means we love you, and we’re glad you’re okay, and if you pull that shit again we’re going to castrate you and take you off of life support early,” Eve murmured, her voice wobbly. His older sister sniffled, running an affectionate hand through his hair. He leaned into it.

“M’sorry.”

“You’d better be,” she said. “No but don’t apologize. Just, that was almost bad.”

“I know.”

“Don’t do that again.”

“I won’t.”

“Good.”

Before she could say any more, more footsteps came down the hall and Kuroo, Yaku, Lev, Kenma, and Yukie came in, too. There was an immediate uproar of voices and chatter.

Safe to say that Koutarou was doted on for most of the day, with teary-eyed ���I’m so glad you’re okay”s from most. Guilt ate at him all day. Guilt for worrying everyone, guilt for being the reason Terushima was dead, guilt for a lot of things.

Then again, Koutarou Bokuto wasn’t exactly a stranger to guilt.

i am SO with you on thinking a lot abt yahaba and kageyama!! how they have such different relationships to oikawa, how yahaba and kindaichi are like gossipy buddies?? theres NO WAY that yahaba didn't get a skewed as hell picture of kageyama from the two of them lmao, my boy being salty as hell abt seijoh losing to them but also angry-cheering them on tv at nationals haha. I'd love to hear you take on these two :D

i think about them a LOT but i don't have anything written down for them yet, which is such a shame because i think they'd have such a fun dynamic!!! yahaba obviously admires oikawa a whooooole lot, and i think he'd be a tad bit frustrated that oikawa puts himself down in comparison to kageyama and takes it out on kageyama instead LMAAO. in canon, i think yahaba kind of wants to hate kageyama at first based on what kindaichi and kunimi have told him and because of the effect he has on oikawa, and yahaba sort of does, really, but he also never really KNEW kageyama, and i think that would help in them becoming eventual friends.

i also think that, hypothetically, if kageyama HAD ended up at seijoh, then yahaba would have had more to worry about than oikawa, because in that scenario there's a very real chance that yahaba would have been skipped over completely and the starting setter role would have gone straight to kageyama.

(keep in mind that there are, like, a HUGE number of factors for this and we'd have to think about what impacts this scenario or not, but if we take it with the things we know — kageyama was still in a rough spot and he wouldn't have had hinata so oikawa would have remained the best choice throughout the entire year, and since oikawa is older and more mature by that point and they're actually on the same side, i'm inclined to think oikawa would help kageyama AND yahaba improve because, hey, school pride he can't have them let seijoh fall through the ranks after he leaves, and imo kageyama would fucking BLOOM under oikawa's guidance if it was properly done)

so, yeah, yahaba would have pretty big reasons to be antagonistic towards kageyama, but i think once he gets over that they'd make a pretty great friendship! yahaba gets what it's like to want to match up to someone you really admire, and i think they'd have a fun time bonding over being the ultimate oikawa fans LMAAAO

(of course kageyama is COMPLETELY unaware about this whole complicated moral dilemma yahaba is struggling through because of him. he just thinks yahaba is cool because oikawa told him so ONE time and that anyone who can stand up to kyoutani deserves the utmost respect.)

SO I actually think Hanamaki and Matsukawa's favourite kohai is Kyoutani and they 100% Show it in an embarrassing way

Like Kyoutani comes late to practice? Makki and Mattsun pretend to be extremely worried ( "Little Kyo are you okay!?!?!?!?! You were exactly 2 minutes and 13 seconds late...!") And Kyoutani HATES it so much- he gets so embarrassed every time ;Üp

what annoys him even more is that they say the exact time that he was late, he thinks that they are like expecting him to be late so they set a timer the second that they get there just to wait for him, but in all reality they are just trying to piss him off (and make him love them more than iwaizumi)
