Extremely difficult to narrow down just a few, but I know this is a challenge for most and a skill for some, so here they are--a selection of my favorite covers, and while we’re at it, records as well.
Satan is Real - The Louvin Brothers Capitol Records 1959
A record cover for the ages. Before you even crack into this record about the perils of playing fast and loose, these god fearing gospel brothers say plenty enough with...everything except their voices. From the desperate expressions of much needed salvation, to the Colonel Sanders attire, everything screams old-time religion. The whole scene just looks like the set of a low-budget movie, even with the out-of-place-yet-oddly-fitting swanky font, you know they’re deadly serious. Also helps that the record sounds as if it’s being played through an antique radio.
Quiet Village - Martin Denny Liberty 1959
A classic example of post-WWII polynesian fantasy. Among the themes that the original composer of Quiet Village (as a single, by Les Baxter) explored are present in the artwork. In his own words:
“The jungle grows more dense as the river boat slowly makes its way into the deep interior. A snake slithers into the water, flushing a brilliantly plumaged bird who soars into the clearing above a quiet village. Here is a musical portrait of a tropical village deserted in the mid-day heat.”
Before the needle even caresses the lush grooves blossoming from the vinyl, we’re already in the thickness of these elements. Either transported away in a daydream, reality, or Hollywood magic--America’s fascination and fetishism of the South Pacific is epitomized in the bamboo, the palm fronds and the seduction of the model. Sure, she’s most likely a starlet from Los Angeles, but the midday heat is alive in her eyes. Maybe the hut is real or maybe it was taken down only to be repurposed in a Honolulu tiki bar, or some receptacle for Mai Tais. Just like a tropical vacation, reality is suspended here, so that only the imagination is vibrant and humid, like peeking at the sky from the center of the jungle.
Sinatra at The Sands - Frank Sinatra (with the Count Basie Orchestra) Reprise 1966
Appropriate for swinging lounge parties as it was for your grandmother (or mine, at least). An all-star cast made this one possible. The Count, The Dude and The Chairman in his kingdom. Live onstage and in the spotlight. What more needs to be said?
Odyssey and Oracle - The Zombies CBS 1968
This psychedelic collage blending the styles of yesterday and today, this is a cover (like pretty much everything else on this list and so many others) that reflects the material inside. You know this is going to be a day tripper friendly record for summer days in the park. It’s the time of the season to get hung up on a dream.
Musical Massage - Leon Ware Motown 1976
My favorite record of all time, hands down. For a while, I was listening to this record at least once a week. Some times, once a day. The smooth sexuality of the cover art (and gatefold, which is a full-on view) was not isolated at the time (the Ohio Players featured covers like this on almost every record in the 70s) but nobody did it better than Ware and his woman with the bee sting stare---piercing and full of honey at the same time. Does the hand suggest power or pleasure? Is the pose submission, or a position? Of course, the music is a 50-something minutes of sonic lovemaking, each track unfolding into the next like sheets falling onto the floor, like body heat melting candy. If Leon Ware is learning how to love you with music, then this cover is the invitation.
Romantic Times - Lewis Baloue  Light in the Attic (reissue) 1985
This is an interesting one. I suggest looking this guy up if you’re interested. For years, he remained a complete mystery--and his backstory reads like the character synopsis for a wayward poster child of 80′s glamor: stocks, excess, boats, jets and shrouded in sleek mystery. So the legend goes...
This cover emphasizes standard 80s tropes (also, common themes found in rap music, which this is far from) the Mercedes drop top, the private jet, white suit, impeccable coif. The list goes on. You can just imagine him lighting the cigar while cruising on the PCH, to some yacht rock song custom made for the whole affair. Does it show the high rolling lifestyle of a man? Or simply a myth? Such is the aim of good cover art.
Goo - Sonic Youth DGC Records 1990
I’ve been in love with this cover since I was probably 13. You know the deal, “Hey baby, where ya goin? Anywhere.” They smoke cigarettes, wear black and yeah sure, they’re criminals on the loose---but dont all adventures begin by running away from something?
Before the Dawn Heals Us - M83 Mute 2005
This one is awesome, I’d like to frame it. The font, the cityscape (Bangkok) and bright lights give you that feeling of running wild, like anything’s possible, full of glimmer and shine, of meeting new people on the go and feeling the warm air of excitement and the rush of a motor scooter, a tuk tuk, or just sticking your head out the window of a car rushing through streets lined with people and the language of someone else’s tongue. Even down to the title, this is an album for what goes on in the nighttime.
Have a great weekend.

In 1985 She-Ra? I'm not sure. But in 2018 SPOP, absolutely. The power of gay killed him, after all...
Tumblr media
A shame that 'Kyleball' doesn't really have the same ring to it

I love that guy, he's just so sweet.

The fact that not a single one of them yelled "Get off my lawn" at them is an injustice that will haunt me for the rest of my days.

In SKINAMARINK, those memories become the backdrops of terrible imaginings and the landscape of increasingly disturbing incidents. While experimental in structure and aesthetics, Ball’s film never loses touch with its child protagonists. Their voices, distant—as if they were wading through water, ripple through the dark, textured space. Their perspective shapes the strange otherworldliness of the suburban home, collapsing time and space, as their vantage point reshapes the familiar into something frightening, as the house seems to shapeshift as the night deepens and the nightmare grows. The uniquely minimalist approach keeps most of the characters off-screen, their voices and sound carrying much of the action. The effect of focusing on the mundane, on ceiling lamps, doorways, and hallways, captures a deep sense of the uncanny as the ordinary becomes increasingly horrific. While by no means a traditional horror film, SKINAMARINK has a way of weaseling under your skin and bringing you back to the greatest fears of childhood.⎦ • ❖ Heck (2020) "Horror Short Film" Watch Full MOVIE:►[ youtu.be/HVQzEzW4faA ] 29MINS, #CANADA, OV ENGLISH (Official Selection Videoscream International Film Festival 2020) ❖「to be watched in the dark...alone」(Heck 2020) Watch Teaser Trailer:►[ youtu.be/VkPyrspX7H8 ] - 46s‘ 「A little kid wakes up in the middle of night to the sound of his mom's television blaring. 」 ⚝

Indeed, Cutie and The Boxer is a charming and strangely romantic film. Instead of plucking low-hanging sentimentality (no doubt the kind of “zen whatever” and conceptual crap Ushio would disdain) Cutie and The Boxer paints a portrait of resentment and passion, capturing what makes a great love story without telling it.
Although some snippets of history are spliced in here and there, the movie exists in the moment, giving the personal anecdotes a reminiscent and reflective quality. The old footage functions to support both the pleasure and pain in the lives of these two artists. In the past, we see a couple together but a family divided. The stench of alcohol is rubbed through the years like a discarded bar napkin. Despite the problems, poverty and punches---they are still in the same apartment, doing the same things, eating cheap but delicious fish and living the lives that they’ve made for themselves and each other. My enjoyment for Ushio and Noriko never wavered, even when I found myself cringing at the obnoxious air of the art dealers fussing about in an early scene. No matter, the couple kept on going, focused on art and each other. As Ushio recognizes, there are other tumultuous artist couples before them, and there will certainly be more to follow. Yet what we see here is the couple not living out on the stretches of Long Island like Pollack and Krasner, but in their New York loft, struggling to get by, where their adult son roams in and out, each person exposing themselves on canvas or paper (or drunk in the kitchen) emotions released like an athlete and a woman with grey pigtails finally coming into her own. Yes, they’re bound by decades together, but Noriko’s independence has come at long last from her experiences being with Ushio, raising a child and peeking out from another artist’s shadow. Nonetheless, the boxer met his match years ago, and perhaps finally, she has come out as the champ.

I found this glimpse into Paula Scher’s life a very compelling and fascinating experience. Not only was her down-to-earth musing on art and design provoking and often charming, but to watch her literally walk through the designs she’s created was nothing short of amazing. I absolutely agree with Kate’s point down below---not only has she created much of New York and played off the character of the city (and people, of course) but hey--her mark is on a good amount of records in my rotation...
That’s what really drew me into her story---she’s in all of our lives without us even really knowing it. it’s the story of communication, yes, but on a very fundamental level: how does one get a message across, how does one get attention, how does one convince one million people to believe in their vision? It’s the classic combination of art and science and damnit, she makes it look easy...but her insatiable drive for more is inspiring, to say the least.

Having spent two months in South Africa this past summer (or more accurately, winter) many of these images stoked my memories, which have been on the forefront of my mind recently anyway. That said, it was difficult to narrow them down but these are a few that really captured me.
This movie is an incredible document of music, politics, family, lifestyle and the relationship between the sweet and gritty stuff of life. The midwestern poetry was not lost on me---but even more so I was amazed by the cold facts---this is a story completely of its time, almost impossible to happen with widespread internet use today. Searching for Sugarman gives us a glimpse, a taste---an intoxicating bump---into worlds familiar and far off and extremely personal through and through. This is the story of music, Rodriguez, Detroit, and so on---yes, but it is also the story of a few music loving folks, born cradled by the upper hand, who pushed against the weight of an oppressive regime by using this anthemic music as their soundtrack to color a system fighting tooth and nail to suppress and destroy any shade different from their own.

Keeping with the record art theme, I decided to scout a few locations (with the help of a very useful  website: http://popspotsnyc.com/record_cover_locations_NEw_York_city/ ) and take my landscape shots where a few iconic album covers (and accompanying font) were taken. They’re not exact, as time, perspective and scenery are forever changing so consider these a spur of the moment interpretation of sorts. Hell, I just had a lot of fun walking around in these places (or trying to find just the right spot) imaging Ms Polly Jean or Page and Plant, Jones and Bonham or Dylan and Rotolo runnin’ ‘round, the rush and pull of the city in their eyes---the music meeting the image, or perhaps the other way around. Maybe they just looked at a row of pictures and said “that one” or maybe they had a particular block in mind. Either way, here they are.
Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea PJ Harvey 2000 47 Street and 7 Avenue
Physical Graffiti Led Zeppelin  1975 St. Marks and Second Avenue
The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan Bob Dylan 1963 Christopher St. (originally on Jones between Bleecker and Sixth Avenue [Dylan lived around the corner on W 4], but this had better light, so there you go)
