to all the new buntsy fans via pens, this is my fave scarborough mike interview from exactly a yr ago (march 18, 2023.. whoa); touring his frenetic energy childhood of playing every sport possible, obtaining financial assistance to play AAA, being selected by dubas twice (thrice now), and 4 seasons in the AHL (which led to him becoming a Calder finalist at 26yo (21-22 season) and every senior citizen joke twitter could throw at him)

after that nomination there was a flurry of bunts-featured media in his second/last season w the leafs (22-23), finally a real appreciation for him, getting to do the fashion shoots kinda interviews his lineys auston and mitchy got to do.

truly if kyle had not been fired, he would've re-signed bunts immediately. so ofc here we are in pittsburgh now :)) i don't think mikey regrets having to leave the leafs. he's finally getting his bag as well as respect for his play

there’s probably a lot of anger within the organisation right now and a lot of upset and it’s entirely warranted. i can guarantee you we’re about to see the leafs be dismantled big time.

because let’s be real this team is kyle’s team. he’s built this team ever since he was named gm all those years ago. he built something incredible that other gm’s had failed to do in toronto and now you’re going to decimate not only organisation morale but trust in your team because of miscommunication??

i’ve heard so many speculations about what happened and honestly it feels as though both of them were a little too heavy handed. kyle in negotiations or being public about his family and their struggles and shanahan in action (screams trigger happy if you ask me).

i’m probs going to take a step away from the hockey news space for a while because i am way too emotionally invested in this business that’s almost designed to hurt you in the off season - or it’s hurt you in general.

ohhhh this hits hard. rly feel for this guy he gave ALL of himself put his own body on the line over and over for his teammates who never stood up for him in return and only got pummeled on by the refs, league, media, hockeybros, hockeymen commentators, other coaches, just everyone. Did not give him a break at any turn.

And he got to the show in the hardest way possible with his family unable to pay for the elite leagues he should've been in w his skill level so he kept chipping away at it in the lower leagues and along came the soo and dubas drafting him into the OHL. i just... y'all this guy hits my feels and I'm so happy he gets a sharp mind like brind'amour to guide him onto his next level of professionalism. He deserves this opportunity so much

And canes fans, know that this guy never takes his on-ice fights off the ice. Every time a reporter tries to provoke him he says "oh that was nothing. That was on ice, i don't bring it off ice" he knows what he's doing, he plays on the edge of rage like so many elite players (natemac im looking at u) and i hope b'a sees the unbelievable potential in him and molds him bc this kid is starved for guidance. keefe did what he could but after so many years in both soo & toronto under his tutelage it was rightfully time for bunts to get cut loose and learn from other experienced hockey minds

I made myself a little bit insane last night thinking about how at every level of hockey, the OHL and the AHL and now here, Kyle Dubas has chosen Sheldon Keefe - somebody that nobody trusted to do anything when he was first hired to the Greyhounds and just wanted a second chance to remake his hockey life on his own terms - as the person he trusts with executing his vision and plan. with bringing the Greyhounds back to life, with winning it all for the Marlies, with breaking this fucking curse. and all three times, he's been right. I've previously described Keefe as being like Dubas's "shovel friend" - the person you know you could call and say "i need you to help me bury a body" and they would just show up no questions, shovel in hand, ready to be an accomplice, ready to attach themselves to the consequences of your actions. "i need you to coach the godforsaken Toronto Maple Leafs for your first NHL-level job. I need you to join me in the pressure cooker." Dubas got one chance to pick his own coach after Babcock finally got punted, to have someone he could actually trust in that role to execute the vision (because Babcock outright refused to), and he turned around and for the third time put it all in Sheldon Keefe's hands. and he was just proven right to do so. he trusted his guy. and he was right.
