Song Review: The String Cheese Incident - “Ramble On” (Live, Feb. 8, 2025)

Keeping the basic structure intact, the String Cheese Incident wisely lowered the key of “Ramble On” to make Michael Kang’s unenviable job a bit less daunting.

Tasked with not only singing Robert Plant’s role on SCI’s Feb. 8 Led Zeppelin cover in Atlanta, Kang also was charged with playing Jimmy Page’s parts. He handled both jobs deftly; not trying to copy, but to create an homage in his own style.

Drummer Michael Travis and percussionist Jason Hann took a more exacting route, anchoring Kang and the rest of the band in Zep’s original pitter-pounder feel.

This “Ramble On” probably shouldn’t have been so successful. But with a band as versatile as SCI, which released the performance on professional video, such surprises are not so surprising.

Willie Nelson Brings Outlaw Music Festival to Forest Hills Stadium

Outlaw Music Festival – Forest Hills Stadium – September 17, 2023

You don’t so much attend a Willie Nelson concert these days as you conform to its warmly understated, sometimes leisurely, sometimes-invigorating pace. Then again, he’s always seemed to have that pause-a-sec-and-listen effect: Whether 30 or 90, delivering sad-eyed, tear-in-beer weepers, tender folk, inspiring hymns or outlaw country rousers, he’s got you. Hearing him play, surrounded by his adoring band, still has that time-stopping quality, and Forest Hills Stadium was in thrall to one of American music’s true and unimpeachable legends on a rainy but warm Sunday evening. 

The Outlaw Music Festival, a going concern for a while now, is Willie’s eclectic seasonal caravan, loading up a sprawling six-hour bill with a range of artists that don’t sound quite like Nelson but are at the same time just right for a show like this, underscoring his own lineage and place in the history of many potent strains of Americana. As ever, he and his impressive band crowned the show with an hour-long set of their own, setting a brisk but not workmanlike pace through his classics (“Whiskey River,” “Mammas Don’t Let Your Babies Grow Up to Be Cowboys,” “On the Road Again,” “I Gotta Get Drunk,” “Always On My Mind,” “Roll Me Up and Smoke Me When I Die”) and those of friends and favorites, including Billie Joe Shaver’s “I Been to Georgia on a Fast Train,” “Stay a Little Longer” from the Bob Willis catalog, “Move It On Over” from Hank Williams, and the immortal “Georgia on My Mind.” Willie’s sung these songs thousands of times, but each one still felt like a warm embrace, even the wistful ones, and even the ones for which he wouldn’t need to do more than go through the motions but is just too classy for that.

About the bill: There were plenty of willing conspirators and indeed, half the fun of a tour like this is the cross-pollination and spirit of collaboration that happens throughout. No less than Norah Jones — a surprise guest, unannounced — low-key sat in on keyboards for most of the Willie set. (It wasn’t even clear it was her until she took a few backing vocals and then a full verse of “I Gotta Get Drunk.”) Harmonica ace Mickey Raphael — a stalwart of Nelson’s band — joined for sections of earlier sets from Los Lobos, the String Cheese Incident and Bob Weir & Wolf Bros using a range of harmonica modes, from sawing roadhouse blues to sweet-’n’-tender folk. And as ever, Willie made his customary invite to many of the musicians, including a game and all-smiles Weir, to join in for the rootsy, hymnal “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and several more selections, hootenanny-ing up the stage to close the night.

Weir’s Wolf Bros — one of the most interesting post–Grateful Dead bands and as oddly compelling a capture of Weir’s Weir-ness as any other group he’s been part of — got about 90 minutes to roam as the night’s coheadliner and more than made the most of it. The core trio of Weir, Don Was and Jay Lane has mushroomed on the road into a full ensemble, including Weir’s longtime swingman Jeff Chimenti on keys and ace pedal steel from Barry Sless, plus a sturdy horns-and-strings section called the Wolfpack. That bigness was well used here: “Jack Straw,” “Estimated Prophet” (neatly segued into its forever companion, “Eyes of the World,” which itself neatly segued into Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On”), the Sunday-special “Samson & Delilah” and a rollicking “Turn On Your Lovelight” were Grateful Dead staples all getting jammy workouts.

Earlier came a potent set from jam-bluegrass stalwarts the String Cheese Incident, somehow now approaching their own 30th anniversary. And earlier still came the mighty Los Lobos — themselves, whoa, 50 years along! — who played a ripsnorting 45-minute frame full of cumbia and full-boogie rockers, including the beloved “Georgia Slop.” 30 years? 50 years? Dungeon Meshi by Ryoko Kui [5/5]: incredibly funny, charming, full of interesting worldbuilding and compelling characters, some strong themes of entropy and consumption/desire and connection/ecology

Doom Patrol by Grant Morrison [5/5]: a darkly creative challenge to the Ubermensch masculinism that dominates comics

The Flash by Mark Waid [4/5]: breezily readable exploration of a character that I think has ebbs and flows, but generally features atypically fun time-travel plots and a great cast

The Flash by Grant Morrison & Mark Millar [4/5]: a solid continuation of Waid's themes and priorities that pushes Flash to his absolute limits

Astonishing X-Men by Joss Whedon [2/5]: tries to be mutant assimilationist, but can't even do that fucking correctly

X-23 by Craig Kyle & Chris Yost [3/5]: perfectly fine, a little hacky in its treatment of motherhood, but a nice and heartfelt contemporary take on the Wolverine: Weapon X story

JLA by Grant Morrison [5/5]: incredible, maybe Morrison's best ongoing achievement

Seven Soldiers by Grant Morrison [3/5]: very cool idea that doesn't really stick the landing but has a lot of bright spots and fabulous art

Batman: No Man's Land by Greg Rucka (and others) [3/5]: a crossover that features some of the best Batman stories and characterization, and also some of the worst; very much carried by the strength of its premise, best realized by Greg Rucka's stories

Animal Man by Grant Morrison [4/5]: features some of the best single issues I've ever read

All-Star Superman by Grant Morrison [5/5]: needs to be read. beautiful.

Grant Morrison's Batman Epic (includes: Batman, Final Crisis, Batman and Robin, Batman: The Return of Bruce Wayne, Batman Incorporated) [5/5]: despite having some questionable character decisions and being dense in a way that can be tiring, I love how it redeems Bruce from one of his worst periods and pulls together his values and history cohesively while injecting some great new ideas and consistent motifs - the idea of a hole at the center of everything, the constant imagery of spirals and recurrence, really stuck with me over time.

Action Comics by Grant Morrison [2/5]: frenetic, but very obviously shows Morrison straining against The New 52 reboot, and doesn't live up to its initial promise of a young Superman of the people, and ends on a sour note that seems to reflect Morrison's justified disillusionment with the industry

Detective Comics by Greg Rucka [3/5]: carried by the lovely monochromatic artwork, sets up some interesting ideas like Bruce's bodyguard but ultimately gets cannibalized by crossovers (coincidentally when the best art disappears)

Wolverine by Greg Rucka [4/5]: features Logan in lone wanderer mode, with some awkward threads that don't really go anywhere but also don't trip up the rest of the story too badly

Catwoman by Ed Brubaker [4/5]: peters out in the last third, but the first two are holistically great noir fiction, and have amazing illustrations

Hawkeye by Matt Fraction [5/5]: beautiful artwork by David Aja and Matt Hollingsworth paired with a compelling, clinically criss-cross structure both in paneling and serialization. astonishing that this book works as well as it does considering its protagonist is 1) typically boring and 2) a huge fuck-up

Punisher / Franken-Castle by Rick Remender [2/5]: fails to live up to its premise because Brian Michael Bendis had dibs on all the important characters, so it just throws everything out the window and does some random shit for a bit

Batman: Hush by Jeph Loeb [3/5]: perfectly fine blockbuster action-mystery with an eyeroll main antagonist

Detective Comics by Scott Snyder [3/5]: starts out strong, finishes super weak. I am pretty uninterested in hackneyed evil-since-childhood villains (see also: Hush), and I find the cynicism which runs through all its plots really poorly executed

Venom by Rick Remender [2/5]: fails to live up to its premise by trying to be a Peter Parker book (and also, briefly and inexplicably, a Ghost Rider book)

Black Widow by Marjorie Liu [4/5]: really gorgeous artwork from Daniel Acuna. I think the plot is a little convoluted and underbaked, but its spy-thriller antics were still quite enjoyable to read, and it has some surprisingly strong emotional beats for a character I'm not super-invested in

Birds of Prey by Gail Simone [4/5]: good cheesy fun with great character writing, though a rushed (and largely unnecessary) final act

Batman: Face the Face by James Robinson [3/5]: a "One Year Later" storyline that has some nice Bruce/Tim moments, but its main Two-Face plot is empty calories

Jonathan Hickman's Fantastic Four Epic (includes Dark Reign: Fantastic Four, Fantastic Four, FF [Future Foundation]) [5/5]: another series where, even though I can find it overwhelmingly dense or breakneck in pacing, its thematic payoff is so triumphant that I admire it a lot anyway; probably my second favorite FF run, full of fun sci-fi concepts, moving character beats, and creative changes to the team's structure like the Future Foundation

Superman: Up, Up, and Away by Kurt Busiek and Geoff Johns [5/5]: compared to Face to Face - the other big "One Year Later" return - it's literally no contest; incredibly charming, great art, thematic cohesion

Two Nights with The String Cheese Incident: Live at the Tabernacle

The String Cheese Incident (SCI) is a jam/progressive bluegrass/neo-psychedelia band from Crested Butte, Colorado that has been helping folks dance their cares away since 1993-2007, 2009-present. SCI consists of Michael Kang (acoustic/electric mandolin/electric guitar/violin), Michael Travis (drums/percussion), Kyle Hollingsworth (piano/organ/Rhodes/accordion), Bill Nershi (acoustic guitar/lap steel guitar/electric slide guitar), Keith Moseley (bass), and Jason Hahn (auxiliary percussion). The String Cheese Incident has released eleven (11) LPs, three (3) live series, eight (8) videos, and contributed to one (1) compilation. The String Cheese Incident is well-known on the festival circuit, and hosts not one but two festivals annually: Hulaween (Live Oak, Florida) and Electric Forest (Rothbury, Michigan). I have had the pleasure of seeing The String Cheese Incident tear it down at both festivals: Electric Forest (June 22-25, 2017) and Hulaween (2016-2023). Most recently, The String Cheese Incident has also headlined a fun little festival called CaveJam (The Caverns- Pelham, Tennessee) the last two years, which also includes a special end-of-the-festival jam below in The Caverns which incidentally was amazing to attend at last year’s CaveJam. On November 15, 2024, The String Cheese Incident announced on their social media channels some new 2025 tour dates in Chicago, Atlanta, Aspen, Los Angeles, San Diego, and Phoenix. For the scheduled Atlanta dates, The String Cheese Incident would play at a venue I know very well in downtown Atlanta. The Tabernacle has hosted so many legendary artists/bands over the years, that I knew Atlanta would bring their best cheesy vibes for all three nights of their February run. Knowing that I would not attend CaveJam or Hulaween in 2025, I knew this would be the best chance to get cheesy with other fans and hear Cheese do their thing on stage. Truth be told, most of the times that I have seen The String Cheese Incident perform live have been logged in at various music festivals. So, it is not often that I can catch The String Cheese Incident on an actual tour. Luckily, I can document not one but two nights on this tour: Friday, February 7th & Saturday, February 8th. Many thanks to The String Cheese Incident team for allowing me to photograph the last two nights of this unforgettable three-night stand at the historic Tabernacle in downtown Atlanta, GA.

The String Cheese Incident took the stage around 7:30 pm to a sold-out crowd for their Friday night performance after a deep-cut performance for the fans the night before. But no one was prepared for what The String Cheese Incident was about to do by starting Set 1 with an inspiring performance of “Can’t Wait Another Day” > “Little Hands”. Followed by one of my favorite songs by The String Cheese Incident, “One Step Closer” from the album of the same name, One Step Closer. Fans were packed tight on the floor of the Tabernacle, but you could not tell from the smiles on everyone as they danced to the rest of Set 1 from The String Cheese Incident.

As a treat for all the Hulaween fans in the audience, The String Cheese Incident invited an Atlanta native and longtime guest vocalist Rhonda Thomas to come out and perform a few songs with the band to begin Set 2. If you are a die-hard Hulaween fan, you may recognize Rhonda from multiple guest appearances on stage with The String Cheese Incident at Hulaween over the last decade. For this occasion, we were treated to two songs that showcased Rhonda’s stellar vocal range as they nailed each song flawlessly. Starting with the song “Sweet Spot” from the album Believe and then into a marvelous cover of The Zutons’ classic hit, “Valerie”. IYKYK.

There was a beautiful moment during a cover of Bob Marley and the Wailers “Stir It Up” nestled between “I Know You Rider” that got the sold-out fans at the Tabernacle singing in unison. What I found very interesting was The String Cheese Incident’s choice for the Encore: “Jellyfish” from their 1997 debut album, Born on the Wrong Planet. It has been a few years (Hulaween 2018) since I have seen The String Cheese Incident perform this seminal classic, so I was thrilled to hear it as the final send-off for this evening’s festivities.

The time had finally come for The String Cheese Incident to take the stage to the delight of all the cheese heads in attendance for the final night of this recent three-night stand. Many cheese heads had attended all three nights and were super excited to see what The String Cheese Incident had in store for their sendoff from Atlanta. Saturday began with a fan favorite “Just One Story” which was a perfect segue to a stirring cover of Vassar Clements’ “Lonesome Fiddle Blues” which is recorded on their live album A String Cheese Incident. The String Cheese Incident even indulged fans with an exhilarating performance of Led Zepplin’s classic “Ramble On”. Everyone that night in the Tabernacle knew the assignment while dancing and singing along to their impeccable rendition of a rock’n’roll masterpiece. As a bonus, The String Cheese Incident invited special guest bassist/producer from Cameroon Andre Manga on their song “Manga” and later in the evening for a special encore cover of Paul Simon’s timeless hit “Under African Skies”.

Selina Kyle hasn't put on the cat suit for six months. She encounters Batman while apprehending the Riddler ( still out of costume. She hits one of his thugs with a brick when he attempts to shoot Batman from behind and disappears. Later, she dresses up for a night on the rooftops. She has a brief discussion with Batman about the help gave him the previous day. He asks her what he can expect from her now and she says that he'll just have to take a wait and see attitude. She thanks him for referring her to a psychologist. He says he helped because he believes deep down she is a good person. After Selina returns to her safehouse, a friend from her prostitute days, Holly Robinson tries to pick the lock on the door. She tells Selina that the streets aren't safe as someone is murdering prostitutes.

Song Review: String Cheese Incident - “Revival” (Live, May 19, 2024)

“Revival” got a fitting revival from the String Cheese Incident.

SCI turned in a stellar version of the Allman Brothers Band number May 19 in Maine. And it was fortunately captured on high-quality video and just released to the wider audience.

It climaxes with a joyful call-and-response between band and audience - Players: People can you feel it? Listeners: Love is everywhere! - accompanied by drums, percussion and handclaps. Iffy vocals from the stage notwithstanding, it’s a glorious moment.

The song proper finds Michael Kang and Bill Nershi doing a convincing imitation of the Allmans’ harmonizing guitars. Nershi sings it, takes a solo, hands off to keyboardist Kyle Hollingsworth and locks back in with Kang before the aforementioned home stretch.

"MLT" by the string cheese incident

MLT stands for My Latin Tune. before it became a staple of cheese's repertoire, it was keyboardist kyle hollingsworth's senior thesis at towson university, where he majored in jazz piano.

other sci songs have used acronym titles, though MLT is the only one to do so permanently. "shantytown" briefly used SKORT (Some Kind of Reggae Tune) as a working title, and "xai xai", first played in 2001, was known as SKAT (Some Kind of African Tune) until 2015
