Norway Scuba - from Oxymoron to Tragedy

The Slettaa Diving Club wanted to draw attention to Haugesund as a diving destination; apparently the waters here are clear and filled with fascinating sea life. So they bought four concrete sculptures by the British sculptor Jason deCares Taylor that were taken from an exhibition by the Thames and installed in Kvalsvik Park lapped by the rising tide and making a statement about the effects of the oil industry in Norway.

Taylor created the first underwater sculpture park in 2006 and his work is now found all over the world; usually in places that are better known as diving destinations with fragile ecosystems. The intention here was that other works would be added.

More recently, however, another stone was added to mourn the death of one of the diving club members who drowned in these waters in 2014. Not a great advert for a diving location.

The club’s good intentions took a deadly turn. The site is beautiful and poignant but now unmaintained and abandoned.

The other point of interest was Haraldshaugen - a monument on the burial site of Harald Fairhair who is credited with the unification of Norway in 872. He had several sons including Halfdan Long-Leg, Haakon the Good, and Eric Bloodaxe. Guess which one succeeded his father?
