#I've only been up to the observation tower once but it's cool i guess#such an ugly fucking brutalist structure in the middle of the mountains but whatevs#found a trail (perhaps the Appalachian trail) that boasts 360 views without the tourist traffic#I'm curious if they'll have the signage changed yet or not#also curious if I'll hear some morons with their 'well the natives weren't the first people here!' bs#legit saw someone say the Cherokee stole this land from Neanderthals in an Instagram comment about the name change#like. just be normal racist buddy. don't add extra steps.#just be honest and say you're happy europeans pox blanketed almost an entire race to death. you fucking goof.#dancing around that just makes you look racist and dishonest. and that's one hell of a combo.#anyway. I'm hoping for good views and no jeeple or fall traffic or rod run bs out there#i can't remember exactly what shit goes on in pigeon forge this time of year but it's always something!#I'll be delivering mail out there this week so i guess i should learn huh? better to not be surprised#kuwohi

The highest peak at Great Smoky Mountains National Park is officially reverting to its Cherokee name more than 150 years after a surveyor named it for a Confederate general.
The US Board of Geographic Names voted on Wednesday in favor of a request from the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians to officially change the name Clingmans Dome to Kuwohi, according to a news release from the park. The Cherokee name for the mountain translates to “mulberry place.”

America's most popular national park urges visitors to stay away as Helene leaves behind a path of destruction.
“The National Park Service stated that although some areas of the park are open, outdoor activities are currently discouraged due to limited staff and concerns for visitor safety following the damage caused by Hurricane Helene in Great Smoky Mountains National Park.”
Climate and Average Weather Year Round in 33904 - Cape Coral FL:
Park rangers at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, the most visited national park in the United States, are advising visitors to delay their trips after the park was impacted by Hurricane Helene.
Located along the border of Tennessee and North Carolina, the park experienced flooding, downed trees, damaged power lines, and hazardous trail conditions, as reported by the National Park Service (NPS).
These effects have resulted in road closures both within the park and in surrounding areas.
"Although some parts of the national park are accessible, outdoor recreation is currently discouraged due to limited staffing and safety concerns for visitors," the NPS stated.

They also mentioned that surrounding communities have been affected by Hurricane Helene, leading to shortages of gas, food, water, and other essential resources.
As a result, the following areas in the park are closed, according to the NPS:
Balsam Mountain area, including the campground and roads.
Big Creek area, including the campground and roads.
Cataloochee Valley area, including the campground, roads, and Hwy 284.
Deep Creek (the creek) between Indian Creek Bridge and the park boundary, closed to all water activities.
Deep Creek Campground.
Foothills Parkway East.
Kuwohi Road (formerly Clingmans Dome Road).
Kuwohi Visitor Center.
Lakeview Drive.
Newfound Gap Road/Hwy 441.
Oconaluftee Visitor Center.
Parson Branch Road (due to impacts from the Flint Gap Fire).

"While we understand this is a popular time to visit the park, we encourage visitors to reschedule their trips for their own safety," park officials advised.
They emphasized that if visitors choose to come to the park, they should recreate responsibly. This includes the following guidelines:
Refraining from hiking or venturing into the backcountry, as creek crossings can be unpredictable and there may be downed trees.
Avoiding water activities, being aware of your limits, and understanding that emergency response times may be delayed due to strained emergency services.
Park officials also urged visitors to keep in mind that many park employees were personally impacted by Hurricane Helene. They pointed out that some staff members are dealing with emergencies at home or are unable to reach work due to road closures.

Finally, some delicious fucking news
#gsmnp#great smoky mountains#great smoky mountains national park#tennessee#north carolina#clingmans dome#cherokee#native american#indigenous american#tbh clingmans dome is such an ugly ass name#y'all cannot believe the level of seethe going on in the Instagram comments section for this one#it's like 700 old people being so racist you're ashamed for them but they don't notice they're being cringe#like. the best you can argue against it is the Cherokee didn't live in that labd first. that's it.#and even that is weak because I'm pretty sure the eastern band of the Cherokee nation was here longest#if you want to try arguing that we can't use old names for places bc what if someone had a name for it before that...#...then we suddenly do not have names for anything! congrats!#anyway. I'm happy to see the park doing something good for once.#if you read into the history of gsmnp it's one misstep after another#those in charge probably meant well. but so much needless destruction happened to create my favorite park#anything done to bandaid that harm is a step in the right direction
