I was typing this up during that whole other thing people may have seen. I don't know what this list can tell anyone about me. It is funny to go over for me personally because a lot of the characterization stuff I like from Milgram can be found in most of these series. Which is proably why I have trouble actually picking favorites in regards to Milgram since all of the characters have traits I enjoy.

But yeah that's a little bit about me I guess. I do enjoy a lot of the characterization I see in Milgram. This is much more casual and generally being written up to give some idea of my likes. Though most of these are good watches, reads, or plays. Most are pretty well known but I would recommend Spiral since it's not that talked about in general.

Mm, he probably will change his clothes, just because he get’s blood and dirt on them, but I think it’ll be something similar to what he was already wearing. He’ll probably wear his “pizza king” shirt for the majority of the story. Idk as much as I think more serious clothes would look cool, I think they wouldn’t go with Mikey’s personality.

People pick what they wear as a reflection of their personality. So while it’d make sense for Donnie to wear a snazzy dress shirt, Mikey is a very laid-back and silly dude so he’d wear much more casual clothes like a t-shirt with something he likes on it. Definitely the kind of guy who picks what to wear based on what’s left in his closet regardless of whether it looks good or not.

I do think though that his shirt will probably become white noise over the course of the comic. This did cross my mind when I was designing them, but honestly when you read a full length comic, you become desensitized to the vast majority of visual character quirks like a silly shirt, funny nose, or a wacky hair style pretty fast. (Yu Yu Hakusho is definitely a good example of that, seriously Yusuke and Kuwabara’s hair is something else)

Fun fact, though! His shirt, while totally in character, is also a reference to the 2012 theme song:

I remember you talked about what it’d be like if NQK were Keiko’s sibling—I can’t find the post, but I’ve been thinking about it a lot! I imagine NQK would be the more free-spirited one, maybe even the troublemaker between them, kind of like a Costello and Abbott duo! They'd defo put Keiko onto their music 😂

I feel like Kei would be such a good influence on Keiko, helping her loosen up and live a little! I can totally picture Kei and Yusuke skipping school together, only to get scolded by Keiko afterward—so funny--even funnier would be if Kei doesn't encourage Yusuke to skip school but they just end up seeing each other outside school😂😂! I wonder if NQK would ever try to set Keiko and Yusuke up, or if they’d just stay out of it completely?

I’m also curious: what do you think Kei’s new name would be? If the Yukimuras had a second child, what would they name them? I can imagine so many things would be different with Kei around. For instance, how do you think Kei’s first meeting with Yusuke would go? And would Kei still end up transferring schools? I actually think that could play out in a similar way!

Oh gosh, I know that in the current story, NQK’s parents don’t know that this is their second life! So when Kei’s true identity eventually comes to light, how would Keiko feel about that? Would she decide to keep her parents in the dark? It really makes you wonder!

And then there’s the scene (one of my favorite LC scenes ❤️) with Kuwabara after Yusuke’s death—would Keiko be there this time? I can see it both ways. If she isn’t there, it could leave her feeling even lonelier :')

Kei would definitely still want to get powers, and I wonder if they’d encourage Keiko to try as well. I think they’d push her a bit, though I’m not sure if Keiko would go for it. And would Keiko join Kei in Aikido lessons? That seems possible too! What would that mean for tigger and rabbit! Would Keiko be included to NQK otherworldly friend group 🤔

There’s so much potential here! I need to sit down, brainstorm, and start writing these ideas out—I’m so excited to explore this!

TBH, I don't remember everything I've said about this subject!

Some spoilers for LC under the cut.

I halfway suspect NQK and Keiko wouldn't get along very well. I can be an aloof know-it-all, and I can be sensitive. Keiko is so smart and competent and kind, I think she might find me a bit abrasive (and I might find her annoying when I can't measure up and inevitably because the 'screw-up' sibling). I might come across as patronizing to her; the sense of "I know something you don't know" radiating off of NQK might grate on Keiko's nerves and render the relationship imbalanced.

To that point, I don't think NQK would let Keiko meet Rabbit or Tigger (though they might not exist in those forms in this world if no one was reincarnated as a character, but rather as just a random person). NQK would spend a lot of time safeguarding secrets from others, Keiko herself included. But I do think NQK would teach Keiko to fight a little more! Maybe not encourage her to get powers, but definitely to fight.

NQK would still probably be really obsessed with sticking to the script in this AU, and I think this would manifest in hardcore Parent-Trap level matchmaking shenanigans, trying to force Keiko and Yusuke to fall in love. All at once, NQK would be both overbearing AND distant, a baffling and likely infuriating combination that could have unexpected negative consequences on the subjects of NQK's meddling...

When NQK's secrets come out, I think they ease some of the strain in the relationship between the sisters. I think Keiko (feeling protective of their parents) might encourage NQK to come clean, though. Being kept in the dark hurt Keiko in some ways, so I don't think she'd want history to repeat with their parents.

Oh, inspiration moment: Keiko gets cut with the sword (in lieu of Botan in LC) and develops demon powers that way! Or she develops dream powers after having multiple prophetic dreams (this is canon, and I used that to justify NQK's dream powers in LC). Either way, I don't think NQK would plan for this to happen, but it would be a real headache (or another point of jealousy) for NQK if it did!

For irony, I think NQK's name in this AU might be 'Sara,' which can be spelled with a character that means 'good luck.' Considering this sounds like a pretty normal American name (and a feminine one, at that, with no easy masculine or gender neutral nickname), NQK would probably hate it! :D Haha!

There's definitely a lot to explore here, that's for sure, and I'm super happy to read your thoughts!

YYH fans are confused about what makes a youkai a youkai especially while living with a secret human double identity in the human world because they do not know much lore about youkai in the first place. There are also different connotations due to its translation as "demon" as well as some parts of the manga not getting animated. But here's the thing: a lot of youkais had human origins in Japanese folklore but they are full youkai and aren't half human. That's because youkai are more like spirits and a spirit could come from a human (Yusuke) or an animal (Kurama) past life amongst other things. Example of this is Kuchisake-onna or slit-mouthed woman that was mentioned in the manga when youkais were starting to live with humanity (unfortunately, that wasn't shown in the anime).

Kurama is a demon fox (youko) but was also called a spirit fox (kitsune) which are actual born foxes that turn youkai after living a hundred years. We don't call Kurama a half animal for being born a fox before turning youkai so why should Kurama or Yusuke be half human half demon?

More about Kuchisake-onna on this link if anyone's curious because I don't want to get distracted by overexplaining one of my favorite folk tales:

Are there actual half youkai or youkai hybrids in YYH? Yes, in the manga there were 2 of them. These half youkai pretended to be Yusuke and Kuwabara in chapter 45 of the manga.

You can assume that these are also just youkai assimilating into the human society like Kurama does based on them being described as having "registered name and citizenship in the human world" but in the manga they are actually textually called half youkai and Kurama wasn't referred to with the same wording nor Yusuke after his atavism.

Also, something about Kurama that had puzzled me in a while is that if he was half human half demon and hybrids are supposed to have both youki and reiki like anime only Yusuke, then why was Kurama never shown using reiki?

The anime is confusing because of 3 things: It doesn't follow everything in the manga and makes up its own lore; It makes a distinction between youki and reiki by different red and blue colorings but isn't really consistent about it; the anime doesn't include the ending of the manga which is unfortunate because the anime is more popular but doesn't do the manga justice.

TLDR: Depending on how much an audience understands youkai and which source they like better (anime or manga), they might experience YYH a little differently and that can make the story confusing.

Bonus: Sensui as Shinobu talking about RPG after beating up Team Urameshi is funny and shows more of himself being innocent and non-malicious like Itsuki described him.

Ok. So I've done "what HH songs the YYH cast would love". Now I'm presenting.

Favourite characters of the HH crew.

Alastor: Sakyo. The twisted one, the one you can't put a finger on his morals. Reminds me of someone. Sensui is a close second.

Charlie: Botan! She's just so adorable and funny, it would be her comfort character!

Vaggie: Shizuru. A baddass and a hottie, she doesn't know if she wants to be her or to be with her.

Angel: Kurama. No seriously Angel is smitted by this guy. And his concept is just so cool. But when the trauma part approaches, Kurama just starts to become a tiny bit too relatable. And also Hiei, the guy is just too hot to handle. He would ship Kurahi 100%.

Husk: Kuwabara or Genkai. One is honest with his morals, the other speaks facts all the time and is very cool. Also really likes Yusuke, reminds him a bit of himself.

Sir Pentious: Kuwabara. The guy is so honorable and inspiring, Pent can't help but be hooked.

Niffty: Hiei. She likes bad boys guys, and she can recognize one when she sees it.

i know you're all about plants, but do you have a favorite animal here in the human realm?

...Would it be too obvious and conceited if i said foxes? 😅 It may be hard to believe, but they're the animal I have the easiest time connecting to. Not to mention that they're so cute, and quite intelligent as well- haha, I definitely sound conceited now, don't I? 🤭 Foxes can easily tell I'm somehow related to them (even if most aren't quite sure how), so they often come flocking to me when I'm near, wanting to play and get pets. I usually try bringing some inarizushi whenever I'm going somewhere I know some foxes will be around- though I won't give it all away, I love the stuff too!

I also enjoy getting things designed after foxes- decorations, trinkets, clothing, anything, really! I have fun wearing kitsune masks during festivals too, haha. Hiei always smiles and rolls his eyes at me when he sees these things, but I can't help it! Surrounding myself with items that're so on the nose while still going under most other people's radar is just too amusing for me! 🤭

With how much foxes love me- plus how fond I am of them- and inarizushi being one of my favorite treats, my mother has joked that I "must have been a fox in a past life"... It's honestly a little scary how accurate her jokes can be sometimes. I suppose it's true what they say about mothers' intuitions- but in my mother's case, it's more precise than even she realizes. 😅

Hm, but aside from the obvious choice... I suppose my next favorite animal would be cats? As I've stated previously, I have a particular fondness for them since I relate them to Hiei. ♡ Honestly, he has enough feline characteristics that I almost wonder if his father was some sort of cat demon, haha. And of course, I adore Eikichi as well! She's become quite the adorable, plump little cat, and still as sweet and playful as she's always been. Plus, it's quite fascinating how much variety there is amongst the species- and funny how no matter how small, big, domestic, or wild they are, they still are drawn to a lot of the same things, like cardboard boxes, haha! I wonder if I got a box big enough, I'd come home to Hiei in it someday. 😂

Ah, I do have a bit of a soft spot for bats as well, as they remind me of Kuronue. He was the partner I had become closest to during my time as a full demon. Though, it's more of a bittersweet feeling seeing those animals. After all, it's hard not to miss people you've cared for in the past, even after so much time has gone by.

I quite like rabbits as well, though... for completely different reasons. 🤭 The ones in the Ningenkai may often be smaller than their counterparts in the Makai, but they taste quite better. Safer to consume, too, as most Ningenkai animals are. It makes me wonder how rats of this world compare to the kinds in the Makai as well. They're more taboo to eat here though, and a bit on the small side for me to care about hunting one myself, so I haven't bothered trying any yet. Maybe one day... It'd be amusing to try some rat meat in front of Kuwabara, at least. 🤭 It already freaks him out that I'd eat something as cute as rabbits, haha. It's just a normal diet for a fox like myself, though.

Yu Yu Hakusho – Live action

Okay… I liked it… was there problems? Yes, but it was done by people who loved the anime/manga and have for years! And we know how rare that is!

So watch it if you have seen the anime, or see it if you haven’t, then go watch the anime!

So… Spoiler? YES!

This is also writen by an insane woman! enjoy!

Ok. So the LA (Live Action) covered 2 main arks of the anime, 1st and the 3rd, it does miss out one of my fave arks of the anime, but that’s fine, they really did a good job of melding them together. But it does mean we don’t get to see Hiei go green and get eyes, or Kurama stepping in and getting stabbed >_<.

Yusuke: I liked his char, but he never stops being ‘moody teen’ and his neck must have hurt from being stuck out all day, I think he breaks a smile once, which is a shame for such a sassy funny character.

Kuwabara: At least they found a tall guy, and he did a really good job, he was funny, and even though he’s not my fav chara, I actually liked him in this LA. Especially when he was left to fight to save Keiko & Yukina.

Kurama: (aka Shuichi) Now, I do love this ancient fox. He was fine in this LA, he was meant to be almost emotionless, which he was. Though I didn’t like the bit where he used the mirror, it didn’t need the graphics, it’s an emotional moment, where Yusuke is also giving his life to save Kurama’s mother, and it’s a HUGE bonding moment between them that never really happened, but also, the mirror never said he was letting them off the sacrifice, it was just kinda ignored >_<.

Hiei: he wasn’t short enough, and even though all the wigs were gods awful, there was no white blaze in his hair. We also didn’t see him go all green and covered in eyes, so we missed out on learning more about his personality. He was just moody and quiet, though his fight is good, and he has a couple of good lines, other than that? You can forget he’s there :S which is strange for the guy’s who’s the 2nd favourit.

Yoko Kurama; Oh… ohhh… tehe. We will forget the tail, it was a little too accurate, BUT… oh how lovely he was! His fight was watched a few times. And they plans were lovely and accurate! Even though we shouldn’t be seeing him come out in that arch, we can forgive him coming out without help XD.

Keiko : She’s fine, just like the anime, they didn’t make her a soft weakling, she sticks up for herself when she needs to!

Yukina: /sigh… pathetic, sure her anime self is a little weak, but she’s more naïve that pathetic… also… some people really shouldn’t get lip filler, poor actress.

Botan: She’s not tall enough, but she they do keep her sister personality to the boys and Yusuke, which I liked… but no broom! >_<

Koenma (Enma Jr): It was a shame they couldn’t afford the CG to make him a baby XD.. but they got his adult form down, so I’ll let it off… BUT… I missed George >_<

Genkai : Just like in the anime, she’s also one of my favourite chara! She’s so old and cranky, and they did a great job in the LA of finding a woman who could pull it off! shame she wasn’t in it more >_<

The rest of the bad guys were also surprisingly accurate and true to the original material, like older Taguro, the GD budget also went on him, even if he looked like Robert Carlyle half the time.

Conclusion?: I enjoyed it! It was fun, it stuck to what it used of the original works. Apart from the 1st true fight, the fight scenes were fun and engaging. So I have no idea what it would be like to watch for people who’s never seen YYH, but if it gets even a few people watching the anime and loving it, that’s good enough for me ^_^

Now this might come off as a surprise but I decided to review another splatband, but this time it doesn't have an octoling, I'm obsessed with Kitamura at the moment so I wanted to review Ink Theory ok?, Anyways let's get started

Ink Theory

Splatoon 2

Broken Coral: The first out of the two is Broken Coral, I need to say this first and that is that i absolutely adore the way Karen plays the piano, the way it starts really calmly and then evolves into chaos with the other instruments playing, I will also mention how Yoko plays the trumpet and everything, yeah it sounds good but I'm more focused on the piano here, I adore the piano in both songs, I'm genuinely impressed by it and I can't stop focusing on it whenever I'm listening to the songs, there's also this part where Aachin's bass becomes more noticeable, and I like that, I have no idea how that sound is made with the bass but honestly it's pretty cool, overall i like Broken Coral, I believe that it's their most popular song (out of the two)

Riptide Rupture: Now for the final song, I believe this one is my personal favorite, the way it starts with Bibi playing the kazoo which is also more noticeable through the song which is cool, I didn't think I would need it but I love splatband songs with kazoo, I need more, there's also of course Karen with the piano which is incredible and that one part where it goes back and forth with the trumper, it's just so good I adore it, now I will mention the part where you can hear Mayaya playing the percussion instruments which is honestly something that I really like, there should be more variety in splatband songs and this honestly is just so nice to hear, it pairs so well with Kitamura's drums which also add a lot to the song, I believe drummers don't get a lot of recognition, without Kitamura the song would feel kinda bland, that's why I adore Kitamura

Closing notes

Now, as a way to end this review I would like to mention the real musicians that made the songs, especially Ai Kuwabara who played the piano, she did an incredible job with it, same goes to Atsuki Yumoto who played the trumpet, playing the trumpet looks actually really hard, and finally Mizuki Ueda, the drummer, I really like her way of playing the drums it's so cool, I wish people talked more about the real musicians behind the splatbands, it's interesting to see who they are asides from the in-game characters that they represent, I must also thank my girlfriend for giving me the idea for this review :›

As a second note I will say, I love Kitamura, she looks so silly, idk what it is but just the way she looks is so funny, I love urchins so much

I kinda want to start readingn yu yu hakusho (manga first bc thats how i roll) sooo would u be interested in pitching the plot and whatnot for me? I know this is smth I could just google buuut, Id like to get some info straight from the best source :3 (a nd fan whos likes to ramble)

👀👀👀👀👀👀👀👀 OKAY SO idk what all the differences are between the manga and the anime (havent read the manga yet but i want to eventually) but yu yu hakusho starts off with, from the very get-go, the protagonist dying! yup, main character just dead right at the start, and the next part is a plot for him going through a test from the spirit world to get his life back! its actually pretty emotional, because yusuke (the protag) didnt want to come back until he realize how much the people hes closed to cared about him, but throughout the show he makes more friends and realizes more of what he wants to live for (while theyre all constantly risking their lives in battles jfkdjfj) and becomes way more well off by the end of the show.

a lot of the show is yusuke taking various cases from spirit world as their designated spirit detective, fighting demons and sometimes humans to protect the world through the use of his spirit gun power! theres a whole lot of excellent humor along with intense moments, and i cant pinpoint exactly how they do it but even the funny stuff happening during serious moments dont really retract from each other, unlike how some other series it can feel like awkward tone shifts.

yusuke is a snarky son of a bitch, absolute delinquent that loves to kick ass. hes defintely not the brightest, but he makes up for that in sheer willpower (and luck lol). hes not a pure goody boy protag, hes a lovable asshole!

kuwabara is similar to yusuke in being a delinquent that loves to fight, but he has much more of an honor code and actually tries to be polite and really sweet sometimes (especially to his big crush in the show) despite his usual brash loudness lol. hes the himbo of the group! he also has a kitten he loves :3

kurama is one of my top favorite characters ever (and my kin) because hes just so??? interesting??? hes literally the best character in the show to put in a situation. any of them. so none of this is spoilers bc this is all shit he straight up tells as soon as he shows up in like, episode 7 or something: hes a fox demon thief that almost was killed, but he managed to transfer his spirit into an unborn human child and was raised by his human mother, whos kindness ended up changing him from cruel and ruthless, to a much kinder person. hes a interesting mix of characteristics, where he can equally be the kindest of the group, but he can also still be the most ruthless. plus they really play up the pretty boy factor and his main weapon is a rose whip hes fucking great. also despite him being a lot kinder now hes still defintely an asshole sometimes and loves messing with people bc hes still a fox at heart.

THEN HIEI. Concept for a canon-complicant yyh fanfic, and some character analysis of Yusuke and Kuwabara in Genkai's tournament:

Genkai, at the end of the preliminary eliminations of her tournament for a disciple, having one round that doesn't consist of strength or logic, asking the contestants,

"Why are you here?"

The concept came to mind and then I found it compelling. Giving the contestants an explicit opportunity to describe their circumstances of why they have come here, after they've already succeeded in a number of trials before the actual matches. Some having been so focused on making through this that they're stumped by the question, regardless if they have their life story ready or not. Some refusing outright to describe a story, and instead leave a statement. Others are ready, perhaps thinking that this is another test and so they must have the most compelling story to tell for why they deserve learning from this great master before she dies.

It's a compelling concept to me because 1) it gives opportunity to give easy dimension to background characters and give more crunch and texture as foils to our main characters of this section, and 2) it's fun to make emotionally constipated Yusuke who is only here for a bribe, and easily-embarrassed Kuwabara who just came here for advice and for some reason* didn't leave when the lady is obviously busy and he's not interested in the position. Also gives these characters opportunity to hear and react to what they're hearing! If they admire the stories they hear or what is left unsaid by another, or if they dislike them for that! Yusuke and Kuwabara also know each other before-hand and it's fun for me to force them to air out their thoughts or feelings.

It would be funny too, if after some stories about tragedy and some of glory, to get to Kuwabara, who is a little impressionable (he is moe that way), and perhaps gets very self-conscious about the fact that he came here by happenstance and then just didn't leave.

* it's tempting to say it's Yusuke... but no, he came here on Shizuru's suggestion, and despite his lack of saying so, it appears that in the manga he makes a gesture of "well I guess while I'm here...". There's of course the social aspect too, of having arrived at a big gathering and then being the only person who leaves. What if someone sees him?? Urameshi's there too!!

Option 1) He omits what he thinks is embarrassing to say and lies a little. Option 2) He tells the truth: his senses are getting distracting and his sleep paralysis is getting worse, and he wants to seek a professional about this. It was his sister who told him to seek Genkai, but he didn't know there was a tournament.

I think Option 1 would leave Genkai knowing he's lying or omitting something, and it's up to the writer if this is significant to her or not. I personally think it's very in-character of her if the question is just for her to get a feel for the people present and there isn't a right-or-wrong answer to her question: even a lie is acceptable.

Option 2 would leave her more impressed maybe. It takes guts to admit you did something to go with the flow or because you didn't know how to leave gracefully. Kuwa looks surprised when he got the red lot, he might have expected he could have gained an easy exit if it was white. So, he's baffled when it was red. And then it was games, an area he's very comfortable with, and likely got caught in the groove. Which is also a little embarrassing to admit! "I forgot I could leave," haha! But it could also lead up to Genkai outright asking him, "Do you want to leave?" and Kuwabara would be put on the spot again if so. Depends again on the writer if she asks him and he does intend to leave, or if she doesn't ask him and he's once again kinda "forced" to go w the flow, or if she asks him, he says yes he wants to leave, and then she tells him "Too bad, it's too late now!" either for the kick of it or bc she knows too that Rando is somewhere in this crowd.

When I imagine the order of Kuwabara or Yusuke first in regards to when that question is directed at them, I end up starting with Kuwabara bc Yusuke is the protagonist and it's ultimately him who ends up as Genkai's disciple: it feels like good tradition to build up to his answer. That and, while being a kuwameshi stan, building up to Kuwabara feels too "wifebeamy" to me. Too much potential for "woah kuwa is so inherently good he should have some cookies for that" when this is too early for that. Or, it doesn't feel like the right time for me for such a moment. Too easy a moment for me, might be to someone else's tastes though?

Next is Yusuke, who came because of his job but primarily because of a bribe! He does not expect to get chosen, he was really hoping he'd get eliminated early, he doesn't want to get chosen, he's also uninterested in the serial murdering demon Rando! Though, when his watch broke, it probably made reality kick into gear for Yusuke, to realise that yup, that serial killer is right here on these grounds. Makes it a little harder to leave now that he's got confirmation.

He definitely doesn't have a story ready. When Kuwabara asked him why he's here, Yusuke responded by evading the question: "I've got good reasons, unlike some people." (anime, eng dub) - or turning it back around on Kuwabara: "What are you doing here?" (manga, viz eng translation)/"You tell me why you've come here!" (anime, eng netfx sub) / "Right back at you, what did you come here for?" (my own rough translation of the Japanese dub) / "そういう おめえこそ 何しに来たんだよ" (Japanese dub and sub, might have an error on my part!)

Options: 1) lie. 2) tell the truth.

Interesting how in the English dub, Kuwabara comes across as giving up his reason for being here to Yusuke without prompting. Yusuke dismissed him just a moment earlier by implying he didn't have a good reason, "I have good reason, unlike some people" before he even got to hear it! It was not an invitation to chit-chat. Kuwabara next comes across as too-surprised-to-be-defensive-so-he-just-explains-himself. "You think I don't?" In the manga and the Japanese dub especially though, he comes across to me as surprised that Yusuke asked him about him at all. "Why are you here, why did you come?" "M-me...? Well, the truth is..." Very funny to note here is Yusuke's face as Kuwabara describes his predicament. With the English dub, it came across to me as "Of course his powers grew," like he's exasperated with having had a direct hand in Kuwabara's spirit senses developing more (but also in general having an effect on the world by participating in it however directly or indirectly and being annoyed he affected something he didn't mean for). In Japanese, it read to me as "Oh yeah that's my bad..." Kuwabara notes that this spirit sensing is affecting his fighting in the English dub, and in Japanese it affects him being unable to move (referring to sleep paralysis? I've heard some things abt Viz translation not being the best but it's what I have). And it makes sense then why I read Yusuke's reaction a little differently then? Because one interpretaiton of Kuwabara was about his fighting, the delinquency, the fun and mutual violence for the sake of fun and for some self-fulfillment in oneself and with one's fellow friends. The other is directly about his own health, physical and mental. "Of course that happened to you," "Oh yeah that's my bad..."

Yusuke might mind or might not mind just coming out and saying he's not interested in winning. He does have a small interest in this though, because before the watch-compass exploded, Rando the serial killer was kind of a far-off concept. After the explosion, it feels a lot more real, perhaps. He becomes more invested in looking at his fellow contestants, even sizing up Kuwabara to decide if this Kuwabara is real or if he's always been a demon but in hiding.

In the manga he's impressed enough by Genkai roaring at two men (from Kyuushu mind you, hello 90s-that-still-prevails-today rascism and classicism) that he reconsiders wanting to win for the sake of getting stronger. "Skills powerful enough to strike fear into the hearts of demons! Those would be worth having! Guess I'll stick around after all... and win this competition!"

In the anime, in Japanese, it comes across more like he understood now why yokai would be after Genkai and her powers. Espcially because prior to this he was very exasperated with Genkai being an old woman. And then he goes, "Right! I still have to figure out if Rando is in this group", and bing bong the watch breaks.

Lie or tell the truth? Saying out loud that there's a demon present would be very foolish. He could lie, and same instance as when I babbled on about Kuwabara potantially lying, Genkai would know he's lying or not telling the whole truth.

For some reason my gut is telling me she would not accept a lie like, "I came here because I genuinely wanted to" from Yusuke as much as from Kuwabara! I like to think that she senses something familiar about him that reminds her of herself, which makes her less forgiving of him lying or being hesitant about his true motives in front of her. "I know what you fucking are, don't try me," kind of reaction? (I refuse Genkai seeing any similarity to Toguro within Yusuke.) I also like it a little bit that Genkai relates to Yusuke even before the discipleship begins.

Many dislike the parts of yyh where Yusuke wins by accident or luck. I like this abt yyh actually! It feels very in theme and points to more tragic aspects, that it was indeed luck that prevented him from dying. It invites more reflection, sadly many end up at "it doesn't feel earned" and stop examining things at that point. Yusuke can be clever and strong, but he's also very lucky. It's especially prevalent in the marsh section of the latter part of the tournament. All the more reason, I think, for Yusuke to give some kind of answer that makes Genkai react or go "that one!! ... if this wasn't a tournament based on skill I would consider that one strongly."

It would truly put Yusuke on the spot! Probably very similar feeling to Takenaka at best, Iwamoto at worst, but more unsettling because this spirit energy martial arts master is a stranger to him. Maybe he feels it's unfair! Maybe others in the tournament are also baffled.

Could this paint a mark on Yusuke's back? If Genkai kept that in mind, would she still ask that, or would it be reflexive of her to make Yusuke speak a truth? Depends on the writer.

And then Genkai reveals that no one was eliminated in this "test", she just wanted to know them a little. Though this might not be in-character for her as the individual character, I prefer doing that in favour of strengthening whatever themes or motifs I might notice.

I think. It’s a little bit funny that due to localization lag, the anime I watched as a youth gives me a nostalgia for an era of Japan that was over when I was a child.

Gyaru and Yankii fashion is some of my favourite fashion and subcultures that I have seen represented in Japanese media, and the Delinquent Trope usually includes my favourite characters. These tropes are products of the 80s and 90s and definitely represent something that was different in reality but I am a Canadian with no ability to time travel so I will always not have the concept that people actually living in those subcultures would have.

Similarly I think Yakuza stories can be very capital R Romantic, similar to Mafia and Gang stories, but I understand that the reality is not a story and that changing times and laws have left a lot of Yakuza power in a state of flux. And also if I do find myself in a position where I can go to Japan I’ll have some trouble due to the influence Yakuza has on what Japanese people associate tattoos with and I probably won’t be able to go into most public bath houses or hot springs. That’s fair, I know they have alternative rules for foreigners. It’s something I know to respect and check ahead about currently and will know to look for if I get to be in a position where I can be lucky enough to be a tourist.

But honestly sometimes I imagine myself trying to explain to a Japanese artist all the anachronisms and it’s like “well we didn’t that show in Canada until like 2010, and it kinda mixed with a local concept, and I didn’t learn until later what it actually meant in association with Japanese culture. So when I watched Yu Yu Hakusho, I didn’t understand the delinquency culture in Japan and fully just felt Yusuke and Kuwabara were always lower class victims of the system who put forth an image of aggression and violence to stay safe because they weren’t the right status to be protected by the system. Like I was.” Which I don’t think was *untrue* but I do think maybe it was… less obvious? Idk. (God YYH was good. That was a fucking classic.)

Can I say how much I love the change of povs?? Beginning the chapter with the chaos trio pov was a power move, because nostalgia hit like a train ngl you always have a way to write their interactions with one another so well, it makes my heart full (comfort characters go brr).

I just love them okay? The fact that Kurama is the one to negotiate because of his pretty face will always be hilarious for me. And the fact that both Yusuke and Kuwabara are a little bit 🤏 scared of Kurama makes everything funnier.

With the whole conversation and shenanigans in the forest, my first thought was that my girl wouldn't be able to do this sober. And I was right! I would also want fried chicken and croquettes. She has a superior taste.

Also, I find her, like Makoto, quite funny. This line:

Wakaba is torn between underpaid-workers (non-paid-workers?) solidarity and not wanting to deal with this bullshit any more than what she had. I respect that. I want to get tattooed the 'these guys were more than just a little pathetic' line /j. (Whoops, just realized there's a typo, after reading this thrice. I am not beta-reader material and it shows) Anyways!

Now, with that left behind, I was a bit surprised about Wakaba's powers, or at least the spiritual awareness (well, not quite, as after the first chapter, it would have been weird she didn't have spiritual awareness), but a welcomed surprise! Even more with the actual nature of her powers (see what I did there? No? I'm sorry I will stop). It was cool, like, really cool. And I am also happy that she did indeed had some ties to the forest!

Also, a silly little question, on my line of silly little questions: does the poem at the beginning have a japanese counterpart? I mean, it's a silly question alright, because japanese poetry is like,, waiting for death to come. But I thought I would ask. It's ok if it is not, I'm just a geek about these sort of things ꉂ(ˊᗜˋ*)

I didn't plan it this way, but I think beginning with a more somber Kuwabara was a good contrast with the chaos that was about to ensue for the rest of the chapter. Despite how funny the situation is looking at it from the outside, everybody is so done.

Throwing Kurama to the lions and him suddenly getting a nat 1 in a diplomacy check while the other two are giggling around the corner is probably my favorite part of the chapter. Yusuke made a tactical error anyway, because while people do find Kurama more attractive, out of context Kurama is a highly unnerving person and everybody who's spent two minutes with Kuwabara thinks he's a sweetheart.

Slave labor. It's slave labor and she already doesn't like Koenma. asdfghjk I had to reread three times to catch it, fixed it!

I can't comment on Wakaba's powers without spoiling future stuff, but for all intents and purposes right now she's a regular human having a crisis of, uh... not faith. Atheism? Something like that. Girl's cursed by the supernatural-adjacent.

It's a good question! I've been turning the poem over in my mind since before I began writing the fic proper, but I'm not confident enough in my Japanese to write a haiku and not murder it, and I can't translate it back to Japanese without losing critical info in the process because I wouldn't be able to keep the 5-7-5 syllable format. Take for instance the first verse, "flame lights the last path" (5) becomes 火は最後の道を照らす ("hi wa saigo no michi wo terasu") (12). I'm sure someone with a good handle on the language could come up with something, but that's not me. (ˉ▽ˉ；) I can tell you, however, that the "young leaves" mentioned in the poem are written 若葉 and pronounced "wakaba".
