I decided to rewatch all of K Project and since I love the anime so much, I’m going to talk about it here and why I think you should watch it. It’s a relatively small fandom and I want to spread the love for the series. I had a lot of fun writing my thoughts down so I hope you all enjoy it.
Now, of course, this is all my opinion so keep that in mind. Also note I’m only talking about the anime and am not speaking to any of the manga/light novels. The rest is under the cut but there won’t be any spoilers.
Basics of the anime
What’s K Project about?
K, or K Project is set in a Japan that’s secretly ruled by Seven Kings. These Seven Kings hold different psychic powers based upon which king is which. These powers are able to be transferred to their clansmen.
The story starts in media res with a boy named Yashiro Isana who seems like a regular high school boy. However, he’s being targeted by the Red Clan (lead by the red King) HOMRA and the Blue Clan ( Scepter 4 lead by the Blue King) who believe he killed Tatara Totsuka a pacifist Red Clan member. Yashiro (or Shiro as the anime calls him) is aided by a swordsman named Kuroh Yatagami and a girl named Neko in order to clear his name.
How long is K Project and how many seasons does it have?
K Project technically has three seasons and a movie. The first season is simply known as “K” or “K Project”. It’s thirteen episodes long. Then, a movie titled K: Missing Kings is next chronologically and is a necessary bridge to the second season. The second season is K: Return of Kings and ends the series (also 13 episodes long). Finally, there is a sort of “third” season titled K: 7 Stories (12 episodes long but the episodes are about an hour each). This third season has a collection of short prequel stories to the characters.
So, to watch K Project you should watch: K, K: Missing Kings, K: Return of Kings, K: 7 Stories.
Where can I watch K Project?
Crunchyroll has all of the anime (both sub or dub except for K: 7 stories which is only in sub) and I -think- Netflix does too. Don’t quote me because I’m from Canada and Netflix may be different in your own country. Also, side note, I’ve seen K in both Japanese and English and both are good in my opinion. It’s up to your preferences/ whatever floats your boat. Both casts boast some Very Well known seiyuu/ voice actors so there is a bit of appeal there if that’s something that appeals to you.
What do I like best about K Project?
What I like best about K Project is the story. It’s very tightly woven and the timeline for events isn’t all over the place. I’m also a huge fan of “in media res” stories, or stories that start in the middle. Since K Project starts after many events have occurred, there is an element of mystery. This mystery unfolds well and does a good job keeping the audience guessing.
The setting is a modern world with secret groups using powers and that alone is my Entire Aesthetic. Plus, the idea that someone can give proportion of powers to others and share the ability is great!
Next, I like the characters in K Project. Everything that happens within the series is due to character motivations. The singular driving force between all of the conflict is the motivations of each King. Their ideals, their struggles, and their desires all clash with one another. Everyone’s motivations are also understandable.
Finally, the animation is really pretty. There is a good mix of 3D and regular animation and everything blends in well. The fights are very pretty and the use of powers is also animated very well too. Which, speaking of powers what I like best about them is the consistency of the powers. Sure, some may use the powers in their own unique ways, but the rules to how their powers work remain the same. For example, the Red Clan uses fire. Though the members use it in different ways based upon their character, the effects of the power remain the same. This means the fights are interesting not due to the power, but to the characters themselves (in my opinion).
The music is also very pretty. While I cannot really speak to the openings (except K: 7 Stories, that OP, SURVIVE! by angela, slowly grew on me) the insert music is really nice. I like it a lot.
What don’t I like about K Project?
I know I talked about animation in “what I like best” but animation also fits here. There are a lot of reused shots (if you know where to look). Though sometimes it’s just scenery or something small, in fights it can be a little repetitive.
In a sort of same category as animation, the female characters. To start, this anime likes throwing in some “fan service” underwear shots, cleavage shots, and boob jiggling. The size of Awashima and Neko’s breasts (particularly Awashima in her uniform) is just there for the fan service. Which is sort of strange because when we see Awashima in regular clothes her chest isn’t on display and her character model feels more normal.
Also, they decided to animate Neko naked or taking off her clothes (get it, she’s a cat so she wants to be naked because she’s not used to “Human Clothes”! Ahahaha… :/) a lot.
K Project also has a ton of side characters that are still very present and have names, but there isn’t a chance to get to know them. You feel like there is more to them yet nothing is said. Of course, K Project has a ton of manga/light novels, so they are most likely explored a bit more there. Still, that may be a bit off-putting.
Self Indulgence Time
Who do I ship?
Fushimi and Yata have some of the best tension in the series and are one of my favourite ships in the entire series. They fit the trope of friends to lovers to enemies back to friends and possibly lovers again by the end of the series.
Mikoto and Munakata are the “I’ve tried to press two magnets together but the charge is the same and I cannot connect them at all” levels of tension. Both are polar opposites (since they’re the Red and Blue Kings respectfully go figure) yet on the same level I think they sort of get each other.
Mikoto and Tatara are the trope “The grumpy one is baffled by and loves the Sunshine one but isn’t shouting said love from the roof top but the Sunshine one Knows”.
Yashiro and Kuroh are not only the white-haired boy with the dark-haired boy (a Classic I always fall for) but Yashiro is so… floaty and Kuroh is both serious and earnest, yet naïve in some ways. They’re very cute and probably my favourite dynamic in the series.
Awashima and Kusanagi are a bit more “canon” or at least outright say the word “date” because together they’re a female and male ship so of course :/ Still, what I like the best about them is how they genuinely care for one another, can have civil conversations outside of work, and honestly feel like they get along (though Kusanagi does like teasing Awashima a touch).
Who is my favourite character?
This is a hard choice but Yashiro Isana is my favourite. He’s an air headed moron but a kind and smart air headed moron. That makes him one of my favourite character tropes. He also walks around with a traditional Japanese parasol as a weapon and his wardrobe is On Point.
Which one of the Clans is my favourite?
I’m breaking this down into two parts. Aesthetic wise, the Red Clan absolutely dominates for me. Their animation is so beautiful and the way the flames are leaning more towards a red-violet is really gorgeous.
However, power wise I’m saying the Silver King’s because it’s a power I rarely see used in anime.
Final Verdict
K Project is a fast-paced anime that leads you on a mystery. Overall, the animation can be really pretty and the characters are the main driving point of the plot. If you can get past some annoying underwear/boob shots of the female characters as well as the lack of females in the anime, then I think you’ll enjoy this series.

Compare and Contrast: K Project vs. Bungou Stray Dogs - Part 1
I found Bungou Stray Dogs (BSD) through the K Project fandom, because fans of both shows like to draw similarities between the two. I put off watching it for awhile, though, still coming down from my K Project feels after finishing Seven Stories. Recently, I bit the bullet and binge watched the whole thing and now I need to parse some thoughts out. This is going to be a series of posts, pitting these two anime against one another in an over-analysis of their stories, worldbuilding techniques, character development, and their most popular, uncannily similar ships - Sarumi vs. Soukoku. Because I found the two through one another, I wanted to examine how they both stood up against one another. These reviews will focus on the anime versions. There are spoilers ahead.
Overview:
Both K (referred to as K Project in the fandom) and BSD are supernatural action anime focused on various organizations of ability users as they struggle against one another or work together to protect their own interests. They each take place in alternative universe versions of Japan, and feature ensemble casts. While both stories are meant to take place in present time periods, K resembles modern aesthetics with a splash of near-future, whereas, BSD takes on a 1920s-1930s vibe with a bit of a steampunk undertone.
The animation and artwork for both is gorgeous, with extreme similarities in character design and motifs. For example, the characters tentatively referred to as “main protagonist" in K is Yashiro ‘Shiro’ Asano and in BSD is Nakajira Atsushi (overall, these are both ensemble shows, where other characters are explored and given spotlight), both feature a design thematic to the color white. Light features, white hair, Shiro is the Silver King in K and Atsushi has the ability to transform into a white tiger. They're both paired with a character that embodies the color black, Kuroh Yatagami in K (Shiro is Japanese for White and Kuro is Japanese for Black) and Akutagawa in BSD. Similarities in characters doesn't stop there, with Kunikida of BSD heavily resembling Kusanagi of K right down the glasses (although their personalities are drastically different) and the popular pairs of each series: tall, brooding, Fushimi Saruhiko (Blue) and short, fiesty, Yata Misaki (Red) of K Project against tall, suicidal, Dazai Osamu (Blue) and short, fiesty, Nakahara Chuuya (Red) of BSD have so many similarities beyond their appearance, including a shared seiyuu (Fushimi and Dazai are both voiced by the same person), a person might suspect that one pair influenced the other, but from what I can find, the manga for BSD came out about the same time as the anime for K (whose manga came after anime). Since Black&White and Red&Blue are popular motifs in eastern culture, the only thing maybe truly inexplicable here is actually just Kunikida and Kusanagi.
The storylines, as expected of seinen material, explores more complex, adult topics while attempting to maintain accessibility to a younger audience. This can leave older viewers with a sense that the story is too simplistic or immature, while younger viewers might feel that it's too drawn out. Young Adult viewers (between the ages of 15 to 22) I expect would have the highest likelihood of liking either title.  Also worth noting, K can be considered a complete title. There have been no announcements for new additions to the story, and its been awhile since the last new material was put out for it. That’s not to say that it may never have more material added, we are living in a time where we’ve recently gotten reboot anime for Sailor Moon and Fruits Basket, not to mention, a new series expanding on the story of Card Captor Sakura nearly 15 years after the original ended, manga and all, so it’s not impossible for K to be extended. For all intents and purposes, though, at the moment we can consider it over and done. Whereas, BSD is still ongoing, with the newest season and an official movie having been put out earlier this year (2019), and new chapter updates monthly for the manga.
Overall, I loved both series and have added them to my “regularly rewatch" anime list. I was also inspired to purchase every manga and light novel from BSD that was available in my location and hunt down online translations for the newer chapters. That being said, this will be a harsh review, I will say some negative things about both shows. If you do not want to read any criticism of your favorite anime, please ignore the rest of my analysis posts.
