❝ talent alone does nothing if not harnessed appropriately. i think our yusuke is a prime example of that, ❞ kurama reminds her. when she mentions the yokai king, he is surprised. ❝ yomi? ❞ he seems uncertain. maybe he is. ❝ dealing with yomi can sometimes yield ... unpredictable results. ❞ though things have settled now, amends were made, and (for the most part) loose ends were tied clean and neat. ❝ did you get what you asked for, then? did he grant your wish? ❞

his tea remains untouched for now. it holds no interest for him, not like this conversation.

❝ forgive me, but i'm not well versed on your people. i only know rumors and speculations, as well as what you've told me. hiei has always been rather reserved on the matter. getting any information from him has proven fruitless. the very nature of your birth is even a mystery to me. ❞

he considers his next words carefully. she is a creature of ice, reflected not only in her abilities but in her spirit.

in his younger and more vulnerable years, he would have readily agreed with her decision. all he lacks currently is context, which he seeks through clarification.

❝ but i must know what drove you to such drastic measures? ❞

❅ "I am sure that you could flourish even more under her but you're already so talented aren't you?" Yukina picked up the ice flower again, handing it offering it to him. "It won't melt, it's a new technique I learned..." Ice that would never freeze. Usually just used for trinkets she wanted to make on a whim.

"Oh yes, I had known for some time.." The first time she had an inkling was when they rescued her from capture and she'd first met them. Something inside her told her that her brother was close and with time it was confirmed. "He used to come around and hide in the trees until Genkai yelled at him to visit me properly, even dragged him by the ear.." The ice maidens laugh was as gentle as a wind chime.

"Since then he has just visited me normally, although he still doesn't use the front gate..still trying to remain elusive I suppose- I hope he visits you soon..."

It was always a joy to see him as well. Maybe she should tell him to visit Kurama.

❅ "The last time we met I told him that I invited King Yomi here and asked a favor of him. To kill the rest of my clan. I am.. kind but there are things even unforgivable to me. That place and those people had stopped being home when I learned what they did..." And it was a choice she would never regret. in over his head: plants are far removed from his area of expertise ( a language which demands subtlety in a way he rejects ) but he finds interest in small talk regardless. “ fame and honor, huh ? it does seem pretty fitting. ” petals shooting upwards, curling in on themselves despite it. do they know they are being watched, that all eyes are on them ? they swelter under the sun, grasping for attention as much as they hide from it. something like him. “ oh, yeah. i'm not much of a botanist myself, but i can't believe i've never seen these guys before ! ” fingers swipe along delicate reds, drawing back before long. “ how long does it usually take for them to get this big ? ”

he begins the process, going behind the counter to fetch the necessary supplies. a yellow ribbon will do, he thinks. he takes the flowers from her, getting them dressed and ready to leave their home. there we go. neatly tied together by the stems, the ribbon keeps them secure while adding a touch of additional warmth as a shield of plastic wrap keeps them safe from the elements.

          People tend to be their own worst critiques. Like flowers, she thinks. Everyone sees the strength in the stem and radiance in the petals. But they don't always see the bugs crawling underneath the entangled roots in the soil.

          She can feel them, every imprefection and issue. Every mistake she's ever made no matter how innocent they were.

          But there is a small sense of wonder as he confirms all the flowers were grown by him. While she herself doesn't grow flowers, she knows how people view them much the same as a parent does a child. So it's with an even stronger sense of gentleness that she returns the flower to him. After all, he was only showing them to her! Nicole wants his creations to continute to thrive as they have been.

         "I was jus' kinda lookin', ta be frank. I think...my botany knowledge begins an' ends wi' wha' I help my neighbor with. She's a lot older, so she cain' move as much. I've been helpin' her in her garden fer tha last few years. But man...plants are on a differen' level. I barely know wha' ta do wi' tha five senses I have now. Wouldn' begin ta know how ta handle more."

(based on that last post) — kurama definitely purrs when his favorite person or people are near, regardless of it’s romantic or not. when hanging out with his friends, if everyone is having a good time (watching a movie, doing karaoke, etc — things that aren’t training or too active), he’ll often purr quietly to himself as he watches or reads while they entertain themselves. if his preferred person (singular) sits with him or is near, he’ll purr. he also will sometimes purr to soothe someone else or self-soothe. it’s a good calming technique he’s acquired that works well on humans.

he knows she's joking, but his curiosity peaked when she mentions a mother. next to little is known about botan. everything that kurama knows has been through her personality and actions — nothing too revealing about her life or past beyond the gang.

he takes a sip of tea, observing her as he tries to imagine botan's mother for himself, coming up with a clear vision that best fits his vision of her.

❝ and i have. i enjoy what i do, and i like my life the way it is. considering how it all could have gone, i'd say we're very lucky. ❞

until something else comes up. for now, he relishes peace. assisting yusuke on the side is more than enough. it helps that most of those cases end up being busts, anyway.

honestly, kurama had thought the rumors and news reports of the alien would have subsided, but there's been a small following growing at a somewhat alarming rate.

❝ i assume koenma is keeping you busier than ever these days? ❞

Botan listens with a curious interest. She likes the symbolism of things, that no matter which world she visits, there will always be meaning. And when it comes to flowers, she's used to graveyard bouquets, flowers left for the dead, petals that float along the River Styx. Offerings left to the deceased are proof that you were loved in life.

Listening to Kurama list the meaning behind the peonies she's named for brings a light smile to her face. She laughs delightedly at the compliment of it.

"My, I never imagined there could be so many meanings behind a flower. I was going to say that picking my name is too easy but I suppose I should stop by my mother's house to thank her for the name instead," she jests. "You've been making a lot of wedding bouquets, lately? So I take it you're enjoying your job, then. I can't imagine anyone more suited for the task."
