ratchets on standby for training accidents (part of his agreement to be allowed to stay with omega) so he's met orbimus once or twice but has no idea what he's looking at. ratchet would rather explode than let anyone else alone with that thang

even before the war it wasn't really very common knowledge what protoforms actually looked like since they were so heavily guarded. and they still are. so no kup wouldn't babysit

I just remembered that TFA Optimus was trained by Kup when he was a student at the Elite Guard academy and it's given me a cool idea. What if TFA Optimus and TFA Rodimus are brothers?

Kup had taken the young primes to be under his wing long ago when he got a call from Perceptor that the scientist found 2 young sparklings alone outside his lab one day. Optimus was little older roughly 3-4 in human years while Rodimus was just a new spark barely a couple vorns old. Kup's spark just melted and the older mech took the sparklings right there and then.

Years later Kup watches with pride as he sees Optimus take on the Mantel of Magnus and leader of Cybertron while he also congrats Rodimus on his promotion as well as his bonding ceremony with a small green and white Minibot named Minimus who showed up on Cybertron one day. He is very proud of his grand sons and he couldn't be anymore happier.

Can we talk about that bit of world building dropped in autoboot camp that drill sergeants name the cadets? Like that raises a super interesting question to me about how old exactly these bots are when they show up or if this is a case of these bots having other names but this name becomes their primary name after boot camp?

Also makes me super curious about Optimus, Sentinel, and Elita’s naming. Like was Optimus particularly cheerful that day? Was elita named for her ability’s potential? Sentinel’s name means a guard who keeps look out so was it due to him being defensive both with his shield and personality? Like its super interesting to me as a concept

i'm pretty sure they can, at least in the comics. kup's shown smoking cy-gars pretty frequently, to the point that they gave him one for his character model in the tfa continuity.

there's some other characters who smoke them, but he's the example i thought of first.

because it's cold and my circulation is shitty because I am old and disabled lmao, I've been thinking...

Concept: Old Bots in Cold Earth Weather

there are different kinds and degrees of cold, of course

but surely, snow/ice/damp winter weather would be not great for mechanical lifeforms

sure, we know rust is a perpetual concern to begin with

and in TFP, we know there is a hard limit to maximum safe cold exposure for bots in general

but what about old bots with more sensitive joints and cabling?

maybe their minor fuel lines suffer stiffness during cold weather similar to how vascular construction from cold can cause circulation problems in human beings (Reynauds Syndrome, anyone?)

it would also be comparable to winter damage to rubber lines and materials in cars, where the cold causes the rubber components to become more brittle and less flexible over time -- might also affect tires

in TFA, they're all by Lake Erie/Detroit. cold as hell in winter. there's no way Ratchet is having a good time. his ass is out there unable to feel his servos for a good five months out of the year.

I know this, because I used to live just outside of Erie, in Allegheny. And holy fuck, my joints hurt just thinking about it. Now I live in England, where it's a different type of cold, but it fucks up my circulation and my lungs. lol

maybe it's not just damp cold weather that can impact older bots more severely, but dry cold weather.

perhaps "breathing in" cold air through their cooling systems and fans might cause difficulty with internal temperature regulation, possibly even causing spark dysregulation in the way humans can suffer tachycardia/arrhythmia from extreme cold exposure.

TFA Ratchet is having a rough time, I'm telling you. He's a medic, he's watching his own systems carefully, but he's not having a good time. lmao

But even TFP Ratchet, who has been acclimated mostly to the desert climate of Nevada, surely would not have an easy time trying to bridge himself over to a colder climate in order to pull an injured bot out of the field or try to carry out field repairs in a blizzard etc.

Or G1 Kup, who would absolutely be feeling the cold in miserable ways what with being in charge of field drills for the younger recruits (and therefore having to be outside all day), but he would absolutely strategically call Hot Rod over so that he could warm himself up with the excess heat rolling off of the exceptionally hot-running speedster.

The longer his stories are, the longer Hot Rod has to stand there next to him. LOL

all of the old bots would refuse to acknowledge their own difficulty in cold weather, lmao -- If Ratchet drops a tool because he can't feel his digits at all, you did not see it, it is fine, yes Bumblebee does pick it up and it's totally not embarrassing to be taken out by EARTH WEATHER of all things

if he trips because his pedes have started to ice over and his fuel circulation is going to hell, you did not see it. (Everyone sees it. Bumblebee and Optimus are first to offer help, and if the snow piles up too high, Bulkhead might even jokingly offer to carry Ratchet back... Ratchet starts yelling back, which gives Optimus the opportunity to sweep in and pick him up instead. "It's not a problem, old friend. We all stumble at times.")

lots of grumbling about how the vacuum of space is far colder and they've handled that before etc. (until someone points out that space doesn't have snowfall etc.)

Magnus sends a team of ‘backup’ to Optimus on Earth finally to battle the ‘Cons. But it’s another team of ill-fit ‘wash outs’ because Magnus is horrible at taking Optimus seriously enough to care about his struggles (and THAT is the most brain dead, base line, black and white take of mine that’s not overly serious on some context for how this happens DHHFJJ Look at me making plot devices)

And old timer Kup, with his plentiful experience but high level of disregard like what they did to Ratchet, is one of the ones to get sent.

Optimus…. IS ELATED. He is JUMPING off the walls to accommodate his old drill instructor and designation giver. And Kup is chill and content as he always is and really really good at drowning Optimus in validation and returned affection to see his own student in little more than 3 words, like: There’s mah boy!

And pats his back in a big hug

And the earth gang bear witness to an actually happy Optimus for the first time in their lives- the one that earned his cheery designation.

But that ain’t all. Kup snaps Sentinel in to shape anytime he sets a foot out of line. He makes Sentinel behave and at first Sentinel is a rude ass about it, but does as he knows is respectful of him anyway. Same as with Magnus.

But the longer Kup is there issuing stern reminders on basic decency with his incredible loving grandpa vibes who adores all his little miscreant students, the more genuinely tamed Sentinel becomes.

Then he runs across Blackarachnia finally as life on earth goes on, and he knows her INSTANTLY. Is already offering a hand to help her get back on her pedes and stop this nonsense with a single: Elita, come on back, now. It’s time to take a break.

Which he doesn’t mean from her ‘evil’, errant ways, because he is disapproving of her Decepticon lifestyle, but entirely understanding of it and not degrading and punishing her for it.

No, he means, ‘take a break’ from all her fear and anxiety and hopelessness and struggle with self worth. Just come back to Kup and be the careless kid Elita-One once was and join her teammates (Optimus and Sentinel) again

And that is my thoughts on how these three finally reconcile and move past most of their hate/ baggage. It isn’t suddenly perfect, but they all our working towards falling in love with how different their personalities and strengths and weaknesses are and learning to love them again, letting go of their horrid history to finally do some healing.
