The monster pig from cruelty free is a kunekune pig.
Tumblr media
WHY?
Easy. Set in new zealand and kunekune pigs are friendly lil babies. If anyone owns a pig in New Zealand it's a kunekune.

I've made Ashlyn a fren :3
There are several different species that inhabit the world of Ashes to Ashlyn, and one of them is the peccasus (derived from "Peccary" and "pegasus"), i.e. flying pigs. Bella in particular is based on a kunekune pig, which is smol and floofy and has adorable lil wattles! She's a little older than Ashlyn, but not by much.
I imagine that in the game, she shows up in several different levels - sometimes pointing out something helpful in the environment, sometimes in need of a little firepower to protect an endangered critter from demons, sometimes with a lead on where the next macguffin is. Kinda like Hunter in Spyro 2 and 3, but with biology instead of sports.
If you like my work, consider joining the HQ Discord server, or supplying the agency with coffee. Or both, I'm not your spymaster.

Here was our dinner last night.

This meat is from the farm where Margaret was born and was probably one of her cousins. We promised not to eat anybody on Field Team but since last night we've been joking that we may have promised that too soon. It is important to note that breed can make a significant difference in the quality of domesticated meat.
Kunekune pigs are what is known as a lard breed, developed especially to make cooking fat in addition to meat. That means that they are very fatty, especially when compared to commercial breeds that are optimized to produce the leaner (and therefore dryer, less flavorful) meat that you find in the stores. Kunekunes and other "lard breeds" typically have deeply marbled meat that carries so much more flavor.
In order to get the best sense of how different the meat is I cooked this roast as simply as I could, so the flavor of the meat itself would be front and center. I simply seared it after salt and pepper, then braised it for 8 hours on low in a slow-cooker with 2 cups of chicken broth. The difference was instantly apparent.
Have you ever eaten pork carnitas? To oversimplify, it's traditonally made by sort of poaching seasoned pork in lard. That fat is what gives it such rich flavor, but it can also give it a very greasy mouthfeel.
This meat came out tasting virtually indistinguishable from any carnitas that I've eaten even without the addition of lard. The softer intramuscular fat in this Kunekune shoulder was enough to give it that richness without the greasy mouthfeel. This is just a hunch, but I'm pretty sure the softer fat is also not quite as bad for me as lard would be. It's certainly not so big a threat to our drain field if some gets down the sink.
After tasting this meat we're now planning to raise a few Kunekunes from time to time. We're still planning on having a few Tamworths on pasture every year but once those long snouts have rooted up enough of the canary grass to "reset" our fields we might just switch to Kunekunes for our regular hogs.
The sandwich pictured was pulled pork with sauteed mushrooms and spinach and a little honey mustard on a toasted hoagie roll.

The Kunekune pig comes from New Zealand, thought to be a descendant of an Asian domestic bread introduced in the 19th century. Their name, pronounced Cooney Cooney, means fat and round in Maori.
In the 1980s the bread was facing extinction with only about 50 purebred left in New Zealand but as of 2010 no longer face extinction due to the conservation efforts of Michael Willis and John Simister, two wildlife-park owners. Kunekune are incredibly docile and friendly, making them not only good pigs to raise for their meat but as companion animals as well.
