It'll never stop being funny to me how Indra's status and power level changes throughout the different texts because initially, you have this absolute badass God-King who defeats a giant monster and gets together with his wife and holds court in heaven. Next the Ramayana rolls up and he is set as a benchmark for battle-skill: Meghnad, as the warrior who defeated him, is an absolute powerhouse who nearly kills both Rama and Lakshmana (and one of those two is a god). In fact, depending on the version, Rama and Lakshmana only survive by semi-divine intervention (Garuda and Hanumana). It is a story about how Lakshmana, an exiled third prince, kills the man who defeated the King of Gods, thereby proving the victory of good over evil et cetera... et cetera... You know the drill.
And then, you have the Mahabharata. Where Krishna, then a young boy, protects an entire settlement from Indra's rage. Which... you know what, fine, he too is a god.
But then, Arjuna defeats Indra, who is his father. Arjuna, who presumably upset the audience a few moments ago after he just burned a whole forest with everyone (including children) in it to supposedly satisfy Agni.
Then, Indra shows up to Karna's doorstep begging for his armour, and Karna who had previously angered the audience by calling Draupadi a harlot gets to demand things from the king of the gods.
See the pattern?
Also they have that absolute disaster of a ceremony and their city is called Indraprashtha.
Like come on, at this point you're just using Indra as the bonus +500 point in games to get your favourites in the audience's good books after they messed up.

Very funny that the team behind Downfall apparently realized most of the Critical Role fanbase is cultural Christians projecting their religious trauma onto the Dawnfather and exploited it by appealing to the only weakness of the American Atheist: a slightly unsettling all-loving messianic archetype.

Ok I get where everyone is coming from when they see the design of Pavitr ‘Pav’ Prabhakar aka Indian SpiderMan as an expression of gender queerness, but let me be frank this is very typical Indian male costuming.
Even the toxic masculine patriarchal men have similar stylistic expressions or to be be more precise this is a traditional/historical/ye olde male aesthetic.
Having said that I love what design elements are being used here. So…
Let's take it from the top.
The FACE MASK
Tumblr media
The Three Colors surrounding the eyes are typical spider man colours but they are done to evoke the image the traditional makeup done for the ancient dance art Kathakali. In which the whole face is painted and bold lines are drawn to emphasise/exaggerate the eyes. These eye mask lines are usually thin - bold-thin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Same with the white lines on the cheek bones which are indicative of tusks or pincers of demons or Animorphs in folklore/myths.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The white dot in the centre of the forehead is the most common Hindu motif, expressed in myriad of ways all over the country .
Tumblr media
The ARM/LEG BANDS/CUFFS
Tumblr media
The bicep cuff is a part of Indian historic armour - made of malleable metal, its bejewelled ornate counterparts were then worn in day to day life. Here in the north Royals still wear it during big ceremonies. These metal bands are generally worn by warriors.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
bangles (metal circles worn at wrists) are an important male accessory and are more daily wear even in present modern times, some religions (Sikh,Jain etc.) require the males to always wear one at all times. The ones on the suit were more in the shape of wrist guards which again were an armour accessory. In Indian male clothing the cuffs are usually emphasised.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Due to traditional male footwear being sandals metal ankle cuffs were employed to guard the shins and were worn during wars while thinner bands - ornamental accessories - were worn in daily wear.
There are so many other things I want to elaborate on like: The PATTERNS/LOGO,The LEG GARMENT (??!)(what’s the collective term for clothes for legs?), The Cat’s Cradle swinging/body animation ; but my ADHD is already acting up so imma leave this here.
SIDE NOTE:
I love how the heel and toes are bare in this design. It makes sense from the spider powers perspective - no barrier in contact allows for better manoeuvring and jump control as is seen in gymnastics. But also because in Hindu culture important tasks including some traditional sports require the removal of footwear and getting feet dirty is not discouraged (of course with an adherence to washing of the feet multiple times in a day)
I also loved how incorporated his wrist guard is in his spider style using it as a toy and a tool. This aspect of making use of something in a completely different way was so desi ‘Jugaad’ I was stunned.

Ever heard of the superb fan-throated lizard (Sarada superba)? This ground-dwelling reptile can be found in regions of western India. Its body is covered in dusty brown scales that provide perfect camouflage, but males of this species also have a colorful secret: the fan-like structure under their jaws. Also known as a dewlap, this fleshy structure is used for display. It helps males attract mates and intimidate rivals!

Mahabharat characaters on Social Media: pt. 1
Yudhisthir
Mostly reblogs "Am I The Asshole?" polls and somehow each with a detailed and insightfully correct answer. Most people just look for his reblog and then vote whatever answer he's deemed right. That's how he earned the nickname "Dharmaraja"
Always explains stuff to the asks he gets and does it very politely so. You could ask him about anything and as long as he knows about it, he'll tell you about it.
Women respector since before 5000BC.
Never annoyed by hate comments on himself. Calls the fuck out of them if they disrespect his brothers.
Bheem
Posts photos of foods he likes.
Always posts about what he's cooking.
Gives gym tips to beginners.
Probably has "never stop bulking 💪" in his bio
Definitely makes it his own duty to teach his mutuals how to cook.
Arjun
Crazy good archery skills. Knows it. Shows them off.
(most people just look at his arm muscles flexing though)
Arjun: Madhav! Look at how famous this post about my archery is getting. I don't understand though. All I did was hit a bull's eye.
Krishna, looking at Arjun in that video being completely shirtless and slicked with sweat, brown skin glowing under the sun: *sweats*
Doesn't understand the thirst comments. ("Madhav what does railing mean and why does this person want me to do it to them?" "Uhm, it means they want you to "train" them haha. It's a slang. Haha." "*Replies to comment* sure I'd love to rail you")
Nakul
Sexy and he knows it.
Thirst traps.
Actually works very hard and always helps people, but he's such a troll that people just think he's a unemployed gymrat pretty boy until he attends some big event and people are like "YOU HAVE A JOB??????"
Loves his fans (I just know he'll heart each and every thirst comment go argue with a wall)
Always tagging his twin in the most random posts (most of them are jumpscares)
Sahdev
Does not want to be here
Always duets the videos nakul sends him and screams at the jumpscares ("I do not like this TRICKERY!" "The ball hit the camera Sahdev it wasn't gonna jump out the phone and hit you in the face" "I am BLOCKING YOU")
The fans love his reactions. He doesn't know, he never checks the comments.
Gives in after some time and creates a no-bullshit self help account to help people manage their life and work more efficiently
Krishn
The definition of Hot Mess™
On every platform he's on, which is every platform that exists, this man is Chaos. One post will be "My wife is so beautiful" and then "I miss Arjun" and then "here's three legal ways to loophole out of a lawsuit" and then a motivation post and then a video of a cute baby cow he saw on the sidewalk.
Pranks the fuck out of everyone and everything (his favourite victim is arjun)
Professional roaster. Has online beef with Shakuni. Insults in the most insufferable way possible you canNOT find a way to insult back it's so annoying cuz then he's like 😇🦚
Cute couple reels with Rukmini

I'm stoned and thinking about Bionicle through a religious studies lens. Heres some of my thoughts
- With matoran being the general denizens of the world, and Toa being 'divinely' chosen powered-up versions of matoran, we can interpret Toa as avatars of the great spirit
- Looking at MNOG, Takua interacts with various matoran who are destined to become Toa; Jaller, Hewkii, Matoro, and Kongu. He aids, learns from, or is saved by them, and then he becomes a Toa, followed then by them. Looking at it as if it were a mythological story, it would be like seeing Krishna meeting the other avatars of Vishnu in his origin story (Sorry if your not a fan of the example, I'm too stoned to come up with anything else)
- Kanohi, as like an aspect of a culture, would likely associate the masks ability (Strength for example) as like an astrology thing, that then manifests in a literal way with Toa (being avatars that can use their mask abilities)

If you are a fan of my work on All Miracles Are Strange, I would like to direct you to the website https://qspirit.net/, a fairly comprehensive and lovingly written site dedicated to queer religious studies and queer saints, run by the author Kittredge Cherry.
The website has an extremely good section on saints and includes many articles titled things like "What if Jesus and Krishna made love?" that I truly want to make a little fun of, but am genuinely charmed and moved by. It also has a very good recommended book section, covering theology, politics, and fiction.

PSEUDO FEMINISM?
Well this is something I wish to talk about in regards to Mahabharat and out of Mahabharat, the general perception towards 'feminism'.
This is so weird that it has almost been fitted in our mind that a true feminist woman is someone who is 'strong physically' or can handle weapons both in historical era and present. People always want to see women with guns/pistols or during that time with bow/arrows or swords, and then they will be worthy of 'applaud'. Else, they're just aren't worth any eyeballs. Be it any story centered around feminism, they will make the lead or OC a sassy character, too much sassy with a foul tongue, adamant and arrogant and who loves to mess with others for the sake of it, and it of course is either learned in martial arts or swords/bow-arrows. They're then regarded as embodiment of feminism. The soft spoken ones, introvert ones and good-natured women are 'weak' or 'dreamers' or the 'damsels in distresses' always.
You can't deny that. This is what you all think don't you?
A woman who has undergone through a lot of trauma only is a true feminist. A woman who is having cigarette, drinking alcohol, drug is a feminist. A woman who is learning martial arts or is in an army etc. is a true feminist. A woman who can't apparently do her own chores also fits into that category.
IN SHORT, A TRUE FEMINIST WOMAN IS SOMEONE WHO BEHAVES EXACTLY LIKE A MAN 🙃. AND I CAN'T JUST UNSEE THE COMPARISON NOW.
You want a woman to beat 20 enemies out and out with a little scratch and boom! You have a strong female lead then only, a feminist woman then only. You want her to be physically strong even, then she'll be worth eyeballs. Or when she's in a revenge mode. She's wild, aggressive and sassy. She's no explanation to why she misbehaves, but she will and the audience will go nuts.
This is what 'female' centric films/book are like mostly. MOSTLY I REPEAT.
I admit there are a few films where a woman is normal and just a simple aspect of her life is considered. But no one would want to see it, that's what. No matter how good it is. Even if you see the film, the back of your mind will run around with the thought--'eh' what's so new about this girl? She's the same; gone is the time we love shy, innocent woman too, who upholds values and is goodie-good. Nah, she's weak lol.
And this is where modern authors fail to sketch DRAUPADI. The authors, and the serial makers.
This is why the retelling Draupadi is never like the OG Draupadi of Mahabharat. Never.
People/authors deliberately make her 'arrogant' or unnecessarily sassy, and times when she doesn't know how to speak and where to speak. Breaking rules has been the new normal. Her shouting at the top of the lungs is applauded. Her literally going berserk with smallest of issues is feminism. She's egoistic, proud and doesn't know where to speak correctly. 'Deliberate' attempts to make her seem like forcefully fierce has been incorporated. She's smug and can't take things the way it comes. Always complaining. Ungrateful to her husbands for this life, and to God also.
Yes, and that is the Draupadi most people love and will love. ( This is the reason I am not a fan of the characterization of Draupadi in Star Plus Mahabharat, and BR Chopra.)
The BORI Draupadi will eventually be labelled as a 'damsel in distress' or a 'scaredy cat'. Her being so much lovey dovey with Pandavas even after Dyut will make her seem powerless. Her running towards Bheem during assaults will make her seem 'weak'. Her being so grounded to the rules or Dharma will make her look weak.
Apparently, her surrender to Krishna/Dharma during Dyut is also labelled as a sign of weakness by some.
Internalized misogyny is just all over. A woman has to be like a man to be labelled as a 'true woman'.
The authors who 'write' about 'feminism' or rather it becomes a piece of 'pseudo' feminism. Please. They diss men in their books and yet make the women behave like men-
I mean. . . *smh*, like WOW. If you hate men, why make your women like men?

Okay I can't contain myself and have to rant this out.
Ever since Kalki 2898 A.D. came out, YouTube is full of content where Arjuna is being made fun of by supposed 'Krishna Bhakts'. There is also many claims that say that Krishna appreciated and LOVED Karna more than Arjuna. I have seen and also have been told quite a lot of times that Arjuna is a narcissist who couldn't back up his talk with suitable feats.
And all I have to say is HAVE YOU EVER READ THE MAHABHARATA?!! Because if you had read the Mahabharata, you would KNOW that Arjuna was anything but a narcissist. And when they say that Krishna loved Karna MORE than Arjuna, I just want to close my eyes and pray to Madhav for them. I guess their brains have been filled by baseless propaganda from serials like Suryaputra Karna. That is the only way someone can make such claims because if they had read the Mahabharata, I'm sure they would find more than enough instances where Krishna quite bluntly proclaims that no one is dearer to Him than Arjuna. He quite literally says, "My wives, my kinsmen, my relatives, none amongst these is dearer to me than Arjuna. O Daruka, I shall not be able to cast my eyes, even for a single moment, on the earth bereft of Arjuna." Need you anymore proof because there is alot more. Krishna also says to Arjuna, "You are mine and I am yours. All that is mine is yours too. He who hates you also hates me. He who follows you also follows me. O invincible one! You are Nara and I am Hari Narayana. We are the rishis Nara and Narayana, born from that world in this world. O Partha! O descendant of the Bharata lineage! You are no other than I. I am no other than you. O bull among the Bharata lineage! No one can know any difference that exists between us".
So really what proof do these people have to back up what they say? I really want to know because it certainly is not from the Mahabharata. Arjuna as said by many many gods and others alike is the reincarnation of Nara and thus he and Krishna, who is Narayana, are inseparable, Soul mates. So why demean Arjuna? If you want to like Karna, fine like him there is nothing wrong with it but you should not sprout nonsense just to uplift him to a higher pedestal.
In the end I can only say to go read the Mahabharata if you want to do discourse on its characters. Don't yap at others blindly with 'knowledge' from T.V. serials. They are filled with propaganda.
P.S.: This entire rant is here just because I'm VERY disappointed in Kalki 2898 A.D. I was quite excited to watch the movie at first but I didn't like how they glorify Karna. And the reincarnation of Karna was quite out of place in my opinion. It doesn't really make sense. Like why Karna? It's not like he had any true purpose in the movie other than fan service. And oh boy do Karna fans like him. I have nothing against Prabhas but it just doesn't sit well with me but eh. You have your opinions and I have mine. All I liked in the movie was the theme of Kalki (not the hindi version though, it sounds weird in comparison to the Telugu and Tamil versions) and how they incorporated several races and people from different religious backgrounds in the movie. Makes the world feel bigger.
Anyways, that's all I have to say folks.
Hare Krishna!
