Kristoff was woken up by the sound of cheeping. At first he thought nothing of it, because there were a tonne of birds in Swynlake and it was spring, which was peak baby bird season and he had lived out in the wilderness long enough to know what a baby bird calling for its mother sounded like without it being anything concerning, except. Except that, when he rolled over in bed, ready to go back to sleep and pointedly ignore the noise on his one day off from work, he realised that the sound was coming from inside the house.

He got out of bed slowly, wondering if he was hearing things. He pushed himself up onto his elbows. Cheep. He sat on the edge of the bed. Cheep cheep. He padded to his bedroom door, standing with his hand on the door knob. Cheep cheep cheep.

Kristoff opened the door to reveal seven baby ducks, sitting in a little huddle. When the door opened their heads whipped around, and the flat echoed with the slap of fourteen tiny flippers against the wood flooring as they toddled towards him.

And thus began Kristoff's morning.

There was no mother duck. Wherever she was, she was long gone, which probably meant she had gone back to some kind of body of water - the lake, presumably. Why she'd left the ducklings he had no idea. All he knew was that he had to get them back, because what did he know about raising ducklings?

He tried to put them all in some kind of makeshift blanket carrier sling thing but they just kept attempting to tumble to their doom, so in the finish he let them do what ducklings did best: they waddled behind him in a neat little line, occasionally cheeping, more often falling over their own feet. Without really knowing what else he could possibly do, Kristoff set off in the direction of the lake, hoping he might find the mother on the walk over.

One thing about Kristoff: he didn’t mind getting his hands dirty. Or any part of him dirty, for that matter. He’d grown up in the quarry, venturing out into the forest, grass stains on his knees and dirt across his palms. He had worked at the dog groomers, where he was constantly covered in dog fur and drool and muddy paw prints, and as a firefighter, well. He had tracked thick soot into his apartment more times than he could count - he definitely wasn’t getting the security deposit back.

Even on his days off, he didn’t mind it. Right now, for instance: grease and oil and grey dust smudged up his elbows, and a little across his forehead, as well, where he had forgotten his hands were dirty and had almost put his hand against his forehead to think. Nick’s van was making some kind of a noise, and Kristoff, whilst not a mechanic, could generally take a look and know if he was able to help or not. But Nick’s van was... well. It was really something.

“You’ve really had some work done on this, huh?” He asked, looking over at Nick.
