I present my take on Lord Solar Leontus, Queen Victoria's Golden Throne of Praetoria. Bravely leading the Praetorian Guard into battle.

I have had so much fun working on this fantastic miniature by Midwinter Minis, Elizabeth was replaced with Victoria by the good people at Kraken Gaming.

I converted it up to look more 40k and made a unique base for her.

I am very happy with the outcome.

There are also rules for her that cover 9th and 10th edition Warhammer 40k, but these are not official.

Sea Of Thieves is a PVP, Adventure, Sandbox Game by Rare LTD which immerses you into the Experience of being a Pirate from plundering Treasures, having Intense Battles to Sea Monsters.

These are some of the Art Pieces and Designs that i found from the Official Website of the Concept Art for the Game. Some of the things that I really like is the Detail that has been put into the Characters such as their Faces and the Anatomy. To me the Style looks like a Mix of Cartoony and Realism especially in the Environment in the Game itself which looks even more nicer with the Lighting. Some of the Tropes that appear in this Game that are usually expected in terms of Pirates are Ships, Boats, Sea Monsters and Krakens.

These are some of the Characters from the Game that i decided to use for my Research as i find the Characters Inspiring in terms of the way they were Designed as they look Realistic yet Stylised and the different Techniques they used to create Photo-Realistic and Stylised Environments that are within the Game and Scenes.

Tohokushinsha Film Corporation or TFC for short is the distributor of the Garo Series. While Garo creator Keita Amemiya has his own studio, Crowd Inc., to produce the show, it is a private company with no stock investments. So the best way to invest in Garo is to support TFC. While Garo is the thing they are most proud of, TFC’s core business is being a film dubbing house for Hollywood movies, taking the dialogue and translating it so the moviegoers in Japan can understand what the heck people like Harrison Ford are saying in their own language. Its other core business is film archiving and storage.

Owning TFC includes these sectors: TV/film production, special effects studios, Marketing firms, TV commercial ad companies, Cable TV (red flag!), Supermarkets, a furniture store chain, a beauty salon chain, a brewery, anime production, moichandising sales and home video sales. They also have a licensing firm in Los Angeles, CA called Cente Service (which presumably is how Kraken Releasing got the rights to those shiny Blu-Rays of Garo Season 1!). 

TFC is cheap compared to the others. But cheaper stocks below $10 always have higher risk in some capacity depending on company performance, so be careful!

Shochiku is the toughest of the film studios in Japan, as it has been around since 1895!  Don’t believe me? This one Kabuki theater company turned film studio has survived the following: the end of the Meiji Era, World War II, US occupation, several earthquakes, changing technology, and stared down a near bankruptcy without even flinching. You know you have something special when a 122 year old company is still profitable and still growing. While they now focus on movies and media, Shochiku did not abandon their heritage as the Kabuki theater company that built it is still in operation, now expanded to doing other stage plays. Their core film business is Samurai movies, dramas and action/crime dramas

Shochiku owns movie theaters, a music record company, a film studio, an anime production unit, several stage theater companies including a costume department, real estate, restaurants, home video distribution, TV broadcasting etc. They also hold the rights to film distribution of the Ultraman movies.

Stock is a bit pricier, but it has had decent growth the past 3 years.

Takara Tomy is a famed toy brand thanks to the popularity of its products like Transformers and Beyblade. Recently, the company threw their hats back into the TV tokusatsu ring by making the magical girl series Idol x Warriors Miracle Tunes to compete with Bandai/Toei’s Pretty Cure Series.

While beloved, the grim shadow of Japan’s declining birth rate is making investors wary of Takara Tomy as their target demographic is younger kids. This leaves them in a very vulnerable position if Japan’s birth rate screeches to a complete halt, as no new babies means no future toddlers or preschoolers to ask parents to buy their products like PlaRail. Another blow to them recently is the loss of their long running Pokemon toy license to a rival company which will start selling their own toys in 2018. 

Some meanspirited money men are even speculating Hasbro will just buy out Takara’s ownership of Transformers and ditch the remains if they sink. However, not all is gloom and doom as things seem to be doing better this year. Time will tell if this toy company, one half of which is one of the oldest toy manufacturers in Japan, will endure. In the meantime, give it some love so maybe we can get the Tomica Hero series back! (holding a large amount of stocks gives you voting power over who leads the company after all!)

Takara Tomy’s main business is of course toy manufacturing. It also deals in the making of baby products, children’s books, video games, gashapon toys, candies and various other youth marketed goods and apparel.

Owns: Funimation, therefore indirectly owns the distribution rights to the Garo anime.

Now, I know what you are thinking. Sony? Well, yeah. Given a very recent event, this counts. See just a week ago, Sony officially bought Funimation. And Funimation had a deal with MAPPA to buy the streaming rights to the Garo animes. Plus, Funimation was in the middle of simulcasting Infini-T Force when it happened! In addition, the company is a major partner with Bandai and Ishimori Pro in making Kamen Rider video games for its Playstation family of game consoles like the hotly anticipated Climax Fighters game.

The company is often overlooked for bigger tech stocks like Apple, but they are so much more than a video game company. In addition to consumer electronics, the Sony corporation has a movie studio (which is debated in merit due to the quality of some of their productions) a TV studio in LA that produces shows and beloved TV game show staples Wheel of Fortune and Jeopardy, an animation studio and that is just the visual media part. 

They have semiconductor manufacturing plants, record labels and music distribution, Networking, medical firms, insurance, banking, telecommunications, advertising....In short, Sony is one of the most diverse businesses in the entire world and a worthy addition to a portfolio.

As of this year...this stock is not worth your time. Fields is in trouble right now as the reports of its financials indicate a hard time. The company has lost a big chunk of its yearly income. It is in the negative in terms of debt in some areas and it is reporting major losses. Its primary business is Pachinko machines.

Figures, a company that invests on gambling would go down this year!

NZGDC17 Day 2: Luck By Design

Kind of wish I took notes. Either way, this is what I remember.

Opening Keynote - Aurelie Le Chevailer (Gameplay Programmer, Ubisoft Montreal)

Aurelie started the convention of by talking about "Luck By Design". She mentioned that success is actually dependent on (work + talent) * Luck. After being in uni for 3 years and having one industry related job, I can vouch for this. No matter how good your work is, timing and placement matters a lot more. Another point she brought up was that from success you learn what works. While, from failure you learn why it works. 

I caught up with Aurelie multiple times, during the conference and gathered a lot of useful insight and how she found her career path. 

How to be wrong... less - Jeremy Burgess (Technical Director, PikPok 

This talk was insanely useful, Jeremy spoke about mistakes he had made in his professional career and explained his mindset when making those mistakes. 

He said started with his biggest mistake, where his team had to use Unity and they were all new to the engine. They needed a UI system for the artists. He made the decision to build his own. So what went wrong:

Jeremy's mistakes were that he didn't understand the artist workflow in Unity. They didn't make changes when they did realise that. The cost and time to make that system, could have been used to understand and learn the tools Unity.

What he learnt from this was that you should fully understand your tools. Before, choosing to build something. The tool may do exactly what you want and learning to use said tools may have more benefits. However, if one were to make a tool; they should understand the artists pipeline and their needs. Personally, this is something I've come to learn about throughout my time in Colab. My time here has taught me about how different fields work and gave me a better understanding on how to manage Harry, Ryan and myself.

A couple other interesting points he mentioned were:

Try and not copy and paste code, you might copy over something that doesn't belong there. 

Make sure you're working on the right file. 

Don't feature creep. 

As a programmer that was an amazing talk and has made planning my code significantly easier. 

Taking the luck out of luck: Visual confirmation of game behavior - Christopher Cork (Programming Team Lead, Gameplay, Ubisoft Montreal)

A good talk that was my favourite of the conference. It was very entertaining and emphasised things that ALL Developers think they know. Chris talked about making visual changes, when debugging to speed up the process and it will stop one from getting overwhelmed by all the data being printed out.

The main take away was, CSSL

Colour: changing colours and outlining focused targets. 

Size: making obvious changes to scale. 

Space: putting gaps in crowded areas, between the focused target and other subjects. 

Layers: playing with hierarchy and testing objects or functions higher up the chain to find where the problem stems from. 

I really liked this talk, due to the speakers delivery and content. 

Managing Your Career Through - Jen MacLean (Managing Director, IGDA Foundation)

This one was a change of pace. Instead of focusing on project and development health, Jen spoke about maintaining our own mental health. 

We are always in one of these states: 1. Preparing for Turmoil 2. In Turmoil 3. Recovering from Turmoil At times, when we are waiting for the turmoil; we start subconsciously sabotaging our personal relationships and health. This is due to the worry taking over. Rather, it is better to let things unfold and deal with the problems when they arise. Furthermore, in the recovery stage we should do something different from our regular activities; this tells our body that we have left turmoil. Sooner or later, we will enter turmoil again

Rapid Prototyping in Unreal and the Importance of a good pipeline - Saxon Dixon (Real Time Technical Artist and UX Designer, Virtual Immersive) & John Doolan (Lead Software Engineer, Virtual Immersive) 

This talk was kind of useful, but it was more entertaining than educational for me. Majority of the content discussed, were things I had already learnt. However, their projects were really cool and told me about using SVN as a source control alternative. 

However, what really stood out were their projects.

1. INFINITI VR

I was not expecting to see this or even talk to anyone working on this. They said they inherited this project from another team. Turns out one of the leads on the other team is Matt Hermans, a random artist that I follow on Instagram. I had seen some of his work with photogrammetry and was surprised to see it in a random presentation.

2. Sky Kraken VR

This reminded me of Float’s Kraken VR. But, this time it is an interactive film and you play as a sailor. Honestly, I am just impressed by the technical detail and effort put into this.

Too Clever isn’t Fun – Creating Believable and Satisfying AI Adversaries - Andrew Rowse (Senior Programmer, PikPok)

Then we had this talk, wow just wow. First of all Andrew Rowse was the man that did the Mr. Freeze boss battle AI in Arkham City. Sadly, we was not allowed to go into depth with it. (Insert angry react) 

The problem with making AI is that, if they feel too smart, players feel like they are being cheated. Yet, if they are dumb; players get bored. To solve these issues Andrew would give his AI multiple strategies and they would have a semi-random selection process. Sometimes, when the AI would pull out something unexpected; players would think the AI would be trying to fake them out and this would create a similar feeling as going up against a person who was trying to play you. 

Finding the Fun in Physics - Steve Salmond (Co-Founder, Ninja Thumbs Ltd.)

Last but not least, this talk. The most relevant one to my project. Steve is looking at the same market as me. However, he spoke more about the technical side of things; which what I needed. 

I caught up with him afterwards and we spoke about users combining mechanics and different styles of movement create new play mechanics. In conclusion, I did not find a silver bullet that would help me finish off this project. But, I became more aware of the time needed to execute what I imagined and know that I have to scrapped a couple mechanics to get produce something balanced.

Considering that I’m up to date with my schedule and I still have time to produce, I’ve decided to bring more pirate elements to the project and explain why it was important to do this even not been in my asset lists or Gantt chart. A shipwreck would be excellent for the scene as the story is also about pirates, also is a big asset in the landscape showing the player the presence of pirates in that world. Pirate ships are powerful and works as a symbol for the theme and it’s one of the main element or assets that a pirate game or movie would use. The second important element to reinforce the theme of pirates is the great powerful and feared beast of the seas, the Kraken.

In my project’s case this creature would be in a far distance showing the silhouette of it to demonstrate an imponent titan and possible deadly threat for the players. First try of making this creature was using the same technique as I used for the jellyfish, with a sub UV feature that allows you to animate particles using sprites. The problem was that due to the fog and volumetric light, the result was not as expected, making the object white and bright in a situation that I needed the opposite. Thus, I’ve started to model a Kraken to use in the same place with a cycle animation moving the tentacles. As an 3D or volumetric object, it will have the result I want, using the fog to hide and blur part of its body.

The 3rd element I’ve decided to add in my work, related to pirates’ theme, was a shark. Sharks are not only a sea creature, that makes sense to have it in an under the sea ambient, but also a strong symbol of pirate stories and tales. The reinforce this idea, one of the punishments of the captain was to force a foe or traitor to jump in the board and die eaten by terrifying sharks with razor sharp teeth.

In terms of my progress in the Gantt Chart, at this stage I’m looking for errors, bugs and issues in the models, textures, light and animation as I’ve started to make some takes and learn how to make animation using the sequencer and matinee. I’m making a list of points where I have to fix, change some texture, add some modelling detail or lights to give more volume to the scene.
