My thoughts on the mashle stage play becuz I'm sad I didn't record the whole thing

Only thing I didn't record but I did watch once was the Abel vs Mash part so I think I'm okay enough.

So, overall it was fun. Reminds me of how much fun I had while watching one of the mha stage plays (think the 3rd).

I love the details they added in this medium:

1. Mash NEVER sings showing just how unmagic he is (really looking forward to what the Divine Visionaries will sound like) it reminded me of Shrek and why the Shrek musical felt weird when I watched it. Like everybody sings and dances—except for Mash which really shows just how out of place he is. It makes you focus on the other characters too ngl.

2. Mash's muscles wearing creampuffs for headgear AND having nametags was just *chef's kiss*. I found it extra funny and they really help emphasise the absurdity of Mash's physical powers AND have their own personalities? They're like Mash's minions—the Duello moment where they score a bunch of goals—iconic.

3. Just the stagehands/prop ppl in general working with the projector to make the magic—magic itself in reality was extra cool. Like Abyss' Secondth Spell set up was kinda wild as if his own magic wasn't with the people waving around arrow flags. Using fabric for Wirth's Mud stuff. HECK THEY ONLY HAD 3 PARTISAN PROPS AND STILL MADE IT LOOK COOL.

Alright, so any highlights?

Let me go in order if I can.

The first door prop was wild. I think they used magnets in order to make it work. Pls use it againnnn in the next stage play.

The way Lemon and Love are the only two who use the rewind function is really funny, becuz Lemon's is for her introduction solo song and also semi-glosses over what happened during the entrance exam just like the rest of it was in song while also establishing her delulu love for Mash, honestly she's so real for it. Meanwhile, Love's isn't a musical number and is just the one where she explains how they got duped a coin. The use of practical magic tricks is really cool (I think they used one for the coin itself, those flipping blinds things to make the illusion of a diff object yk.)

The Magia Lupus choir-y ensemble songs were prolly one of my favourites, although I think it's just becuz I really liked Love Cute's presence as a whole since they only focused on Love, Wirth, Abyss and Abel as like the lead singers and Shuen is nowhere in sight? (I forgot if he was Magia Lupus in the first place) alongside the Finn-Lemon duet about like "ganbare Mash" (istg they made FinnMash so much more possible with this one song) and they're like definitely bestie coded 100%.

Anything with Mash's muscles is super funny too.

Lance's solos are emo, Dot had such a main character entrance but I dunno how to feel about the fact he doesn't tuck in his shirt (for context: the tea and the grades) but the fact I can't tell when his actor changes his fucking wig for the Ira Kreuz reveal is crazy.

RAYNE'S ENTRANCE GUYS. Bro has like my favourite musical solo entrance out of all of them. AND HE ALSO DANCES. HE FUCKING DANCES GUYS. KPOP IDOL RAYNE IS SO CLOSE TO BEING REALITY GUYS. They triple killed me in less than 10 minutes for that one.

Also the way they manage to put on the puppet masks without ruining the pacing makes me lose my mind becuz like... HOW???

I forgot to mention Wahlberg but honestly, him and Regro weren't my favourite favourite parts—I think it's becuz they have a lot of exposition dumps and more of a comedy out of the plot element since him and the cop interact with the audience quite a bit—oh but the acting that Regro does to make it look like he's squeezing from the neck makes you as the audience feel and believe his pain (when tehre isn't any). Like it was convincing. Plus they were funny during the entrance exam, they were dancing too.

Also Wahlberg pulled off the flash-paper thing. It was cool. I'm hoping for the thirds magic they make it look really cool in the next stage play.

The best part I looked forward too... was the Shu Cream Funk dance the main 5 did. They also made the others do it on the 2nd and 3rd time. Including Rayne. I recorded this in low-res. It was great.

Overall, highly entertaining. I think considering how they had to cut down 4 hours down to 2 hours with song, choreo (fight and dance numbers) they were pretty successful. I just think as someone who cannot understand japanese that the first 20 minutes was really REAAALLLY plot dump exposition a bit like the funny stuff from Ep 2 and Ep 3 with the entrance exam doesn't exist.

But they made up for it enough.

There's a lot that I skipped like the bullying thing and Bamboo guy. I don't remember his name but that's kinda covered with the rest. I'm really wondering how they're gonna pull off the next arc... I forgot who they cast...

hey! i was curious on how you started to write stories? were there any specific accounts that inspired you to?

Hello~ do you mean abberation specifically or writing in general?

In general: I always was kind of into writing. I was that emo kid in school who would write depressing and dark "poetry". Back in 5th grade, we had to do a writing assignment based around this mansion. At the time, I loved Agetha Christie's 'And then there were None', so I wrote a murder mystery story called "Panic! At the Disco vs Green Day". That was my first time I ever wrote anything. Eventually I figured out what fanfiction was and a terribly written Fairy Tail fic was where THAT all started 😅

For Abberation: Back in jr year of high school, I was admitted into psychiatric care for suicide attempt, self harm, all that 'good' stuff. And I've also always loved psychological horror/thrillers. So I have a weird like for hospital and psych ward aus. Back when I still wrote for kpop, I wrote a BTS hospital au and it did fairly okay. I wanted to do another one but tweak it a bit, make it more on the thrilling side and less... "romanticising". I also got a lot more into Yandere after finding out what the term actually was that I was so enamored with. So, here is where Abberation came in.

Yay! I’m not an especially informed BTS fan when it comes to their history or vast array of media output or the inner workings of their fandom, but as a fandom meta type and relative n00b, I can probably give you the big picture:

Why did they get popular in the US, now?

They have heavy influence from US hip hop instead of it being pastede on yay like with a lot of groups. They have a relatively high amount of artistic freedom, which they use to talk about serious social issues and their own mental illness. They have a group leader who speaks pretty good colloquial English. All of this positions them ideally to play into US music snobbery and display the correct kind of front man you’d see in rock or hip hop. Buuuut they also have a way glossier presentation than all but the best US pop acts with their amazing costumes, complex dance routines, and flawless social media presence. It’s the music video prowess of Taylor Swift turned up to 11.

They’re also arriving at the end of other groups trying to break into the US market for years, so that helps too. There have been kpop waves before, but they mostly didn’t make it beyond Asian Americans or fans who like Asian media. The more important stunning music videos on youtube are and the less important US radio is, the better foreign acts, and especially non-English acts will do. BTS just showed up at the right time to cash in. They made a shameless Grammy grab with their first song entirely in English. It was clearly designed specifically to be accessible to Americans, including the music video. So this isn’t an accident: they’re gunning for US recognition hard.

What’s the emotional appeal?

They have a serious underdog narrative that they milk for all it’s worth. The individual members have relatively humble beginnings compared to some. Their agency was a tiny one until BTS got big. Some of them struggle with mental illness. They’ve struggled with poverty and inadequate medical care. (We can argue about how much of that was due to prioritizing being an idol over health vs. genuine lack of access, but regardless, that’s the narrative fans are left with, and it’s a relatable one.)

They also have an epic amount of non-album content, even for an idol group. All of them do this stuff, but BTS does it better and more. They produce a really staggering array of reality tv, confessional vlogs, cute behind the scenes content, etc. And all of this plays into a narrative of seven best friends who are found family, struggling through the hard times together. (Many groups attempt this. BTS sells it better.) Their old music videos even form a collective film AU that’s the sad teenage delinquent versions of themselves having tragic lives together for maximum emo drama.

They continued producing epic quantities of this Best Friends feelgood content, including shooting a reality show in some lovely cabins in the mountains or something... during the pandemic right when a lot of other media ground to a halt and everyone was hiding at home, lonely and depressed.

Results are predictable.

I think the industrial vs goth stuff is part of a larger issue of like. People thinking of genres as exact categories with no overlap instead of a way of describing a grouping of bands/songs/etc. With certain attributes. And because people build their identities around genres it gets to a point where when they disagree with someone going "this is/isn't part of this genre" they treat it like a personal attack against them.

Yeah…. it is very frustrating cuz I do earnestly think that “gatekeeping” subcultures is important in the sense that I view music subcultures as communities, including (if not predominantly!) IRL spaces, and of course I want to only have cool people who actually understand the history of the genre and actually LIKE the genre and give a shit about being willing to learn more there, I think it’s important to stand ur ground if someone is trying to invade a subculture with bullshit redefinitions that water down what this stuff actually means to people who know and care, plus on a more severe level being willing to vocally cast out freaks is truly how you keep ur music scene from being run down by shit like Nazis and rapists and other bigots or violent people, but I also think that sometimes people get too obsessed with perfectly defining every genre or band into clean categories and create artificial walls between things and don’t leave room for fluidity, so you get that shit that is sometimes interesting or helpful for categorization in some contexts but can be pushed to way too extreme of a worldview if it goes too far, so you get people who are like “you called Skuppy GOTH? Lol okay poser, you’re a RIVETHEAD, not GOTH, get it RIGHT 🙄” and it’s like…. man…. Look at them. Listen to them. Learn about their influences. Understand that music is fluid and the history of the way music and subculture evolves means that these things aren’t going to be perfectly easily definable, ykwim?

Side note but it also reminds me of people who get weirdly obsessive about being like “real goths DON’T LISTEN TO [other, usually very popular genre],” like goths who insist that goths don’t listen to pop, or don’t listen to emo music, or whatever. Like obviously neither of the aforementioned genres are goth at all but goths are ultimately MUSIC FANS and ime most music fans will be able to appreciate good music from any genre. That doesn’t mean they LIKE every genre, and it’s perfectly valid if ur just the most trad goth of all time and literally only listen to like, the most classic post punk OG goth bands and that’s it. That’s fine. But I know soooooo many goths who are very happy to admit that they also love some goofy blatantly non-goth mainstream shit cuz they acknowledge that sometimes that stuff is fun and good. No shame in that at all. NOT LIKING certain music does not make you more goth than someone who likes it. If you listen to Bauhaus and Sisters of Mercy you are not more goth than someone who listens to Bauhaus, Sisters of Mercy, and Britney Spears LOL. Honestly one of my biggest non-serious complaints about the goth community is I DO think some of them are utterly boring and focused way too much on what they don’t like, and I get that taking shots at annoying popular bands is fun and I do it too, but in some ways I feel like I have more in common with like, a hardcore music fan who doesn’t care for goth music but ADORES like… dad rock or 80s hip hop or 90s girl bands or even kpop or emo music and wants to just discuss how much they love their music of choice and what it means to them than some pissy goth who spends more time talking about how much they hate popular music than actually talking about what they like about the music they actually fucking listen to. I’m goth cuz I love goth music and I want a community of people who also love goth music, end of.

ahdjaiak ur so right about 2nd gen vs. 4th gen. In 2nd gen, liking kpop meant u supported everyone in the game but had one group you would die for. Now it's illegal and basically adultery if you stan more than one group at a time.

What do I think of 3rd gen? I feel like it was a happy middle because in 3rd gen every group was somehow popular AND an underdog at the same time so u supported kpop as a whole because it meant ur group would benefit but it really birthed the group wars because everyone was vying for their favs to be the next Exo or Big Bang

second gen means u know everyone's business ppl were rly at each other's throats but also having a great time and also everyone was doing something exciting at the same time it was amazing. it was kind of impossible to only know about a couple groups. like if u look at gayo daejeon 2008-2012 every performance was absolutely fantastic and different and often weird in the best way.

i rly wasn't around for third gen tbh! i was like super into kpop from 2008-2012 and when in 2013 i realized big bang sucks actually it turned me off kpop got a while and also i was deep in my alt/emo/classic punk/glam rock phase then. i was kinda pretentious and looked down on pop music in high school lol. i'm not a fan of the third gen boy group model of rebellious youth concept and i don't like school concepts or "hip hop" concepts (i say as a former big bang fan 🥴) so i was missing the zaniness of second gen.

but looking back third gen groups were killing it esp the girl groups. and the dance quality and just the technology and budget was getting better and there was this big anticipatory feeling of watching kpop grow beyond anyone's expectations and like u said everyone trying to make it big. now the mutation of kpop as it hits the US market feels like. some monstrous mutation that is making everything less fun.

i need to vent here cause im not doing it on twt and get shot lmao. but 2 ppl i follow are genuienly throwing a day long tantrum about 1!!!! ONE!! person who tweeted about how butter teaser pics (the suit elevator ones) were so dry compared to the new season greetings and of course its twt so not a grain of critical thinking that no they didnt mean dark emo rock visuals (even tho then they throw the photobook pics in that persons face like look...quite ironic) but they meant too simple to a level of boring vs something more busy and exciting to look at.
