ִֶָ ᯽ .゚ https.inthefieldofanemones.com is the debut mini album of south korean boy band BLUE ROSE.﹙02.13.16﹚
released in the bruising winter of FEBRUARY 2016, the debut album ‘IN THE FIELD OF ANEMONES’ seems to function as more of a return than the debut of a group consisting of well unknown people. the countless creative decisions and specifically designed structure made most question if this album was originally recorded for someone else, how does a group just debut with this? extensive electric guitars and all. true to the spirit which would become synonymous of the group, the album is a look on the feeling of melancholy in all of it's truest forms, a piece of work detailing the cruelties of toxic love, and how, life doesn't always work out the way we may want it to.
though not a smash hit in it's original days, often blasted for ‘trying so hard to be different’, it was clear from the get go that the album was something truly special, a combined collection of five tracks that completely encapsulated how it felt to get kicked down. the album had quite the resurgence in 2018 after each individual track abruptly went viral in their own right, skyrocketing the sales from their previous five hundred fifty thousand to one million. it's safe to say, even if the album didn't exactly fly when it was released, it's remembered as an arguably great piece of music.

 ִֶָ ᯽ .゚ 𖦹 insight from an anonymous user 021716
‘IN THE FIELD OF ANEMONES’ is a sure fire debut album, an unprecedented identity usually not seen in newly debuted groups.. or bands i suppose you could call them. the album is a weird mixture, because in the never ending winter depression, that's exactly what this album delivers? it's a strange way of expressing “i fucking hate everything” through catchy electric guitar tunes and insanely well shot notes. i'm not sure that the groups exact goal was to attempt relatability through their constant complaints regarding life and everything about it, but if it was, sign me up, it's not something i even knew i needed, but now that it's around, i simply can't stop listening to it.
the opening track, which also happens to be the title ‘FLOWER ROCK’ is so fucking insane i had to check a few times if this was actually a kpop album or not. this song, along with two others on the album, was written and produced by the strangest duo to come out of the second generation of beloved boy groups KENZO & CZR, but even with their questionable friendship that includes the strange ways they refer to each other (it's clear their ‘friendship’ can best be described as ‘a dangerous feat of codependency’), it's clear that the two know music, and the two know how to conceptualize music in a certain way. ‘FLOWER ROCK’ isn't the most telling song, it doesn't have an overarching message, it's simply a catchy rock song with crazy vocals (i greatly commend cupid & ceres), it was the perfect take for title in my opinion, as the general public would probably have a heart attack with any of the other tracks being chosen.
the second track ‘WITHERED’, written by member juniper, is horrifically gloom-ridden. the song delves into the topic of suicide, seemingly more of a diary entry that was turned into a song to spread some message. i have to admit, after the title track got me pumped up, looking up the lyrics of this song really made me sink back down into my seat. it's a harrowing look into the minds of idols that are typically deemed to be “perfection personified”, it's somewhat of a breath of fresh air, something that you don't exactly expect from a debut album. the song also isn't your usual ballad, no, it's fucking aggressive, it screams in your face, it screams the whole way out until it's done. in a way, it's agonizing, but in a strange way, the agony is worth it. i was genuinely surprised, but i suppose that's the point. the song usually bounces between top 3 and 2 for me, but it never goes below that.
track three ‘BLUEMING’ is a cute tune that i would listen to on a friday when classes get too bad and i need to hammer back a few ones (for all intensive purposes that was a joke!). i could dance to it, really, i might just make up one right now. it's definitely a crazy jump, considering we went from a singing about dying to singing about love. the attention to gender neutral lyrics is something i didn't click until my second listen (okay ceres i see how you play..), but it's also kind of cute? thank you ceres we appreciate all you've done for society!! it's not my favorite song on the album, the lovely (pun intended) lyrics give a different look to the album that i assumed would be all sadness. of course not all of the lyrics are.. happy, i assume this song is dedicated to an ex lover of sorts, but if you go into it blind, it seems pretty fun! i'll dance to it in between drinks!! i'll make sure to!
our second to last track ‘A MONSTER’ is a song written by all of the members, and good lord it has no right to slap as hard as it does. the rap?? the instrumental?? maybe we should all just die because who does dione think he is? anyway, my death aside, the song is an amazing contender for title, and should've been at least a promoted bside, i would literally pay for that, i still will pay for that!! (luxe design contact me). it admittedly takes a good getting used to, especially if you aren't exactly in tune with the style they were going for. the instrumental is so strange that i question how they made it work as well as it did, i hope it becomes their thing, i need to hear ceres sing over tweaked soundcloud beats more, but alas.. it's a good song, i'm almost sort of ashamed to enjoy it.
and finally, the final track, ‘REI’, one of my favorite kpop songs of the year by far. coming from one of the many meanings of the name, “soul” or “spirit”. the song is actually so surprising in the sense that you hope it would be cute, but it isn't. again written and produced by our favorite pair of homosexuals (do not sue me for that i totally believe that kenzo and czr have a completely normal friendship), “rei” seems to be a placeholder name for the person who hurt these men, and honestly what the actual fuck did rei do because they are DEVASTATED, who even sings like that!? this track quickly takes it's place as my favorite on the album, stealing the top spot away from ‘WITHERED’, who is really just having a losing battle with ‘A MONSTER’. with all that said, ‘REI’ is the spitting image of heartbreak itself. it's crazy, someone must've really hurt ceres, did you HEAR those notes? give him some therapy!!
all in all, the album was spectacular for a debut album, it feels like these guys have already been around for years, they all seem to have so much experience. i have never seen a debut album like this in kpop, a song about suicide in winter is INSANE, i guess the winter depression is hitting them hard. not to mention, the music videos were like watching some feature length film, i have a lot of hope for blue rose, their name is super cute, and their concept seems promising. though some of the songs had points i couldn't exactly wrap my head around, it's all pretty good music. my formal ranking of the tracks on this album is rei, a monster, withered, flower rock, and blueming. a good start to a hopefully promising career.

I was watching this Chinese variety show just to see Ricky and Zhang Hao but then I saw one of the hosts was Zhang Zhenyuan and now I want to cry… 😭💔
#He... Teens In Times deserve better you know?#I keep trying to accept that this is how China is and C-Pop doesn't need to do anything that K-Pop and J-Pop do but#The more I think about it the more unfair it seems... 😢#These Chinese idols train so much and when they debut they just don't get promoted#They don't releaze anything on YT and they just go to variety shows alone and this is it?#That's unfair! This is not why they trained for!#No wonder there are so many Chinese idols in K-Pop it's like “if you want to debut you have to learn Korean and live in SK”#Which is fine if they like SK but what if they don't want to leave China/Taiwan/Hong Kong?? 😭#Guys there's Chinese idols even in J-Pop nowadays!! They really said “I'd rather debut anywhere but China”!!#Again... not saying these idols don't like Japan. Just that they CAN'T CHOOSE whether they want to debut abroad or in their own country!#Even if C-Pop tries to do a little bit like K or J-Pop (ex.: BOY STORY BOYHOOD WayV and the now dead EXO-M)#Their companies DON'T PROMOTE THEM!!! They literally don't invest any money to promote their groups!!!#I'm still not over Asia Super Young and Loong9 in case you didn't notice... 🥺#But... Yeah... I just wish Teens In Times got more rep and that I could just turn my TV on and watch them TOGETHER#And that they had MVs and on YT and etc. (Basically everything I've seen J/K-Pop idols do)#But maybe that's just the K/J-Popper in me and I have to accept that China is China and they owe us nothing#Just because we're interested in East Asian culture doesn't mean they have to all do one thing like the others just to please us!#I will still (try to) stan TNT as much as I can (and as much as they allow me since I speak no Chinese)#Specially ChengXin 🥺 my darling#not kpop or jpop

NOW PLAYING ──
Tumblr media
[▶] Clip 1: Scaredy cat line playing a horror game on a livestream, but Eunjeong and Sujin can't stop swearing.
They hadn't even played 5 minutes of the game, yet Aina was already cowering in the back of the webcam, passing the mouse over to Sujin instead. Once their character reached an ominous looking black door, Su-Jin abruptly paused.
“There is no way I'm going inside.”
“Come on guys, it isn't even that scary-” Eunjeong snatched the mouse from Su-Jin and opened the door. Suddenly, a loud scream emerged from the computer's speakers- “FU**”
The room instead filled with their silent laughter and wheezing as they tried to recover from the jumpscare. Meanwhile, the live chat struggled to keep up with the amount of ‘ㅋㅋㅋ’ and ‘jajaja’ being spammed.
Two more jumpscares and a lot more swearing later, a staff member came into the room and hurriedly told them to end the live.
A few days later, Aina went live again, this time alone in her studio.
“Did you get scolded?” She giggles while hiding her face in her hands, “yeah the unnies got scolded a lot by our manager… I think they might be banned from going live.”
[▶] Clip 8: Nari is worryingly competitive during the pepero game.
“Hey. don't pull away from me no matter what.” Nari gave Aina an 'ok' gesture with her hands as she placed the chocolate stick between her lips.
“Okay, whenever you're ready.” The MC spoke from behind Nari and Aina, watching closely to make sure there was no foul play.
Nari and Aina moved towards each other with sudden haste, causing the members to let out a chorus of shocked gasps. For just a moment, Aina hesitated and began to laugh, but Nari kept going, causing them to kiss abruptly before falling apart.
The entire studio erupted into chaos.
“What?! Did you just kiss??” Someone yelled.
Aina looked defeated, lying on the floor and clutching her stomach as she let out a painful laugh.
“Hey! So what!" Nari jumped up with the crumb in her hands and kissed Sujin on the cheek.
Amongst all of the pandemonium, the MC just stood there, confused, and in silence.
[▶] Clip 12 + 13: Dambi being a homosexual on ‘Bi-Live’.*
*Bi-Live is what she calls her live streams.
"Have you ever given white day chocolates? No, I went to an all girls school.” She kept reading through the live comments absentmindedly, “I got a lot of Valentines Day chocolates, though.”
“Which idol is most your type? Oh-” she doesn't even take 2 seconds to think before answering-“fromis_9 Jiheon, she's so pretty.” Dambi chose to politely ignore the ‘I meant a male idol’ comment that shortly followed.
[▶] Clip 15: Aecha being interrogated by Jonathan on theKstarnextdoor for her compulsive butt spanking habits.
“This next one is for Aecha Noona. K-Butt sniper-” Nari, Haeun, and Dambi instantly burst out laughing.
“Wow. I had a feeling this was gonna to be talked about.” Nari jested while smiling.
“Yeah, it really needs to be brought up more. It's becoming troublesome.” Dam-Bi added with a straight face.
“We have multiple pictures of you touching the members butts, is there a magnet or…? What do you have to say for yourself?” Jonathan held up a collage of at least 20 pictures.
Aecha giggled nervously, pupils shaking as she scanned the paper. “Um, how do I respond to this?-" The studio audibly laughs around her- “their butt's are very satisfying to squeeze, like a fidget toy you know?” Her hands were squeezing the air in a very, *questionable* way.
“Ok, that's nice, but can you please put your hands down? I don't want our show to be rated 19+.”
───
A/N: whoops, guess who made this in a rush instead of studying for their mock exams (*^3^)/~☆ i wasn't gonna post this but i spent so long trying to edit the graphic in my tablet so i thought i'd share ♡ creds to @/desi6ner for the template!

Okay but in honour of Artistic Partisan being released on engstars, I'm going to be very self-indulgent and talk about how Hell Screen (source) coded it is. And yes I'm talking about Akutagawa Ryunosuke's short story about the (spoilers to come) painter obsessed with art and his beloved daughter who got sacrificed in all sorts of ways (then died) in order to inspire him to paint a scene of the Buddhist hell at the commission of his shady patron.
I mean, maybe it's just me but I think Artistic Partisan perfectly captures that line between obsessive creation and passionate artistry, flip flopping back and forth as the line "si vis artem, para bellum" (play on the latin "si vis parcem, para bellum" if you want art/peace, prepare for war) is chanted in the midst of it all. Like how could that not capture the artist's desire for eternity, longevity, beauty while also having the both threatening but invoking intense melody that gives it that edge of action and danger? It's so Hellscreen in the way that Hellscreen is a very bleak depiction of the battle that is art (with questionable beauty being produced but a definite masterpiece of expression regardless). Yes, the artist wants to live forever but, be warned, because the world of art is not one of peace. It is filled with blood and sacrifice and battles. Artistic Partisan is the warning song (but also a praise, almost, of art), Hellscreen is the story of the song ignored (but still proof of how war really does create art).
Just....man. They went hard on this one. If you want art, prepare for war indeed.

in all honesty,,, why is jype trying lore now.... they just,,,ugh. SM has lore that is both hit AND miss but they just have more to work with in the end. though now that im thinking about it, whats lore vs a strong concept. i feel like taemin would qualify as lore because he ((did)) have a storyline for his earlier works i believe but as for most of their soloists i think its just,,, concept?? theres a bit of a gray area between soloists and groups, groups all have lore, solists??? its iffy...
..................i'm gonna stop you right there because i think we need to define what 'lore' means in a kpop context. when i talk about a group having 'lore', i am refering to groups that have a specific and intentional storyline/narrative arc/characters that appear consistently across all their content, regardless of what the 'concept' is. aespa has lore, ateez has lore, cix has lore. taemin does not have lore. taemin explores a thematic idea through an album and moves on to something different. taemin's only consistent character is himself, and even then it's not even consistent! he's literally labelled all of his different personas as different people with different personality types!!
also i feel like i need to stress this: 'lore' does NOT matter to the structural integrity of a work. these storylines are tacked on to the general framework of a kpop cb and have no active impact on the audience's reading of the work. you can watch any ateez mv and get an entirely complete reading of it without knowing wtf the halateez are. aespa are always just fighting some kind of techno construct. i'm willing to bet that most people don't even know cix had lore in the first place. a concept is something that is intrinsic to the construction and meaning of the work. when taemin makes a work, he takes an idea that he wants to explore and breaks it down through that work. you cannot separate those ideas from the work itself. someone using a repeated motif or thematic idea is not lore. it's just putting intentional meaning into your work.
