The fact that their are no gays in KOTLC isnt even just a lack of diversity at this point. It's a plot hole.

i was talking to a friend of mine (straight) that also likes kotlc about queer rep (or more accurately, lack thereof) and headcanons and im gonna list the ones she saw and didnt really see.
happy pride
characters she saw as queer:
marella
sophie
fintan
bronte
elwin
della
livvy
quinlin
marella: this was the one she definitely saw/wanted the most and agreed that even if she doesn’t personally ship marelinh, its an awesome and cute ship (i ship it) and loved the opposites attract vibes (water and fire) (hc as pan)
sophie: she didnt fully see it at first, but i brought up the number of times that sophie describes biana’s lips and just her in general, and she agreed that sophie is queer (hc as bi)
fintan and bronte: (keeping as one section bc they give both us us the vibe that theyre exes) she definitely agreed straight away that both are giving bitter exes and that they were both mega fruity. also talked to her about characters shannon, if she made any queer, that fintan could (bc hes evil and all that, so it wouldn’t be any of the ‘good’ main characters) (no specific hc for bronte but we both agree that fintan wouldnt date women)
elwin: i brought up elwin bc i project heavily on him for my hc, she agreed (after explaining what i meant) that he def was it and also neurodivergent (hc as aroace)
della: ‘she is too girlboss to be straight’ -my friend. there wasnt too much discussion other than saying that she gave the vibes and there was something between her and livvy (hc as pan)
livvy: similar to della, my friend and i actually disagreed on what she was, i thought lesbian but my friend says bi or pan,
quinlin: another case of ‘not at first, but sorta saw it with my reasons’ for him, i brought up the ship of qualden. she laughed and said alden was wayyy too straight. we compromised on quinlin having a crush/gay longing when i meantioned a tumblr post (i think) i saw where they compared desc. of alden by quinlin and desc. of fitz by sophie (very similar)
vespera: lesbian vibes
edaline: i was kinda shocked, wasn’t expecting it but i actually like it. (hc bi but pref to men)
tiergan and prentice: she said that she kinda saw it for teirgan the whole time she read it, could see it for prentice but also reasoned with that he had a wife so he has to be atleast bi. we talked about tiertice, once prentice was healed, co-parenting wylie and anyone who decides they wanna live at solreef. (hc tiergan as gay and prentice as bi)
characters she thought were straight:
alden
gethen
alvar (i disagree)
ruy (by extension of alvar)
gisella
cassius
(the parents that havent been mentioned in the queer section)
keefe (another i disagree with (i hc as bi))

one thing i REALLY like about kotlc is how adoption is handled
in a lot of stories they call the child’s bio parents their real parents and their adopted parents aren’t their real parents and don’t understand them because they’re not their real parents. 90% of the time they where adopted as a toddler at the OLDEST and the parents who raised them where treated like perfectly normal parents until it’s time to find the real parents because they are obviously more important
while that’s not something a lot of people would notice, it’s something i notice. because while i’m not adopted my mom and four out of five of my siblings are. i’ve always been surrounded by other kids who where adopted. even the kids didn’t have a good relationship with their parents it didn’t work like that ever.
but in kotlc Sophie has her adopted parents and her human parents and they are equally considered her family. it wasn’t like missing her human parents just stopped effecting her after the first few books, or that she called her human family her real parents. no both her human family and the Ruewens are her family equally, because there’s absolutely nothing wrong with having more than one family that loves you.
and how Teirgan didn’t just adopt Wyile in the way of becoming his guardian, he called Wyile his son, while i’m sure that relationship was much more complicated it’s just…
shannon did what a LOT of authors didn’t, she wrote healthy adoption stories with the realistic struggles and that’s something i rarely see and really appreciate when it’s done right.
#i can only remember one other book that did this well#Betti on the highwire#and the entire book was about adoption so that’s different#kotlc

Tiergan: i'm not mad- i just want to know why you need a fake ID
Linh: *mumbles*
Tiergan: what was that?
Linh: you need to be over 18 to hold the puppies at PetCo. . .

what's something about kotlc that the book/readers gloss over?
what's something that should have happened in the books that didn't?
if you could bring back a character BUT you had to kill another character to replace the one you saved, which ones would you choose? (geez hope that one makes sense)
if you could make one of the main cast go evil, which one would it be?
which backround character would be most likely to be the main character of a tragedy?
yay more questions!!
what’s something about Kotlc that the books/readers gloss over?
(oh this is gonna be long) to preface, i understand why most people gloss over this, and the only reason i notice is because of the adoption in my family, but its just something in kotlc thats so deeply important to me, and its the reason i love the series as much as i do.
kotlc is the only series ive ever read that has realistic, non stereotypical, adoption, where the main focus isn’t on adoption. most stories with a premise that focuses on something other than adoption, would pretend like the main characters biological parents/who raised them, where non existent after the first book. the main character would call their new parents mom and dad quickly and there would be no issues. because obviously adoption is all sunshine and rainbows.
in keeper it takes time for Sophie to even feel comfortable calling Havenfeild home, Eda and Grady struggle with adopting a new child who looks so much like their dead daughter. Sophie struggles with missing her family and feeling like she’s replacing them. it takes multiple books for Sophie to call them mom and dad consistently and for them to properly act like a family. thats how i should be, it takes time to feel like someone is a part of your family
adopting someone into your family is like falling in love, it happens slowly, then all at once, before they become apart of your heart for the rest of your life.
and thats what keeper did, she captured the feeling of adoption perfectly, without making it the main plot, it just happens in the background and i will forever love that
what's something that should have happened in the books that didn't?
few things actually
Tam being the one to release Gislea
Teirgan officially adopting the twins
Kesler actually having a more negative reaction to the Squall reveal
it doesn’t focus on Talantless and badmatches enough and i wish that was touched on more
Kesler and Grady being best friends
Dex’s parents being a bit more relevant (totally not baias
if you could bring back a character BUT you had to kill another character to replace the one you saved, which ones would you choose? (geez hope that one makes sense)
it did make sense, but honestly i think more characters should die and every character that has died heavily impacted the plot, and undoing their death would change a lot about the story but i will give a list of characters that i think should/will die
Forkle
Oralie
Prentice
Jensi
if you could make one of the main cast go evil, which one would it be?
people have said Dex in the past because of the neglect from the team and his mom being in the black swan without telling him. but because of his kidnapping i don’t think he would
but…Tam, not even go evil, but what if he had been so badly manipulated by the neverseen that he switched sides, what if he actually was a traitor, how would Linh feel, how would Teirgan feel, just imagine the effects that would have on everyone. how hard it would be to fight their friend, their brother in battle.
which backround character would be most likely to be the main character of a tragedy?
i mean we already have, Oralie, the Twins, Wylie, the Ruewens,
and Brant and Jolie’s story is literally a tragedy (@crymeariveronceagain i am right about that right?)
Kotlc is a series sprinkled with tragedies throughout you just have to look, they’re there, most of them are just hidden in the background.

Ok ok ok, we all love dadwin
However we have to appreciate Teirgan for a second.
His best friend’s mind was broken, his best friend’s wife was killed, so he just straight up adopted their kid. Plus, he takes care of Tam and Linh. He’s raising 3 teenagers (actually I think Wylie is like 20 but he WAS a teenager) and basically he’s great.
