i also love the way saito included good luck mode for ryan even though its useless (the wings engaging/fanning out are ryans good luck mode as per the katsura artbook where he talks about the design).

for kotetsu and barnaby good luck mode kinda makes sense like okay they can kick and punch real hard... have big fist or boot. but for ryan? you cant help gravity. his ego is huge though we should make sure everyone knows hes using his powers in case they somehow missed it. and its not like ryan has any window in which good luck mode makes sense, his power isnt limited use. he could just fuck around and dis/engage his wings on repeat while standing in an elevator and annoy everyone

one of my favorite things abt ryan’s hero suit is that it literally gives so few clues as to what his power is. like yeah, you could argue the same about a lot of the other heroes but personally if i was being chased by a guy in a huge metal suit with gigantic wings and all of a sudden he drops into a runner’s crouch and his wings fan out the LAST thing i would expect to happen is for gravity to fucking crush me into the ground. just me though

Having to re-teach myself how I formatted so much of this blog will be slow process my mess of a tagging system too. Dhjrg still happy to be back to it!! Zura and Manba would be very cute sorry I wrote otherwise.Katsura• I feel I really don’t have to talk about Saniwa Katsura, we know he takes things seriously despite being a buffoon most of the time and he regrets the past but has set his sights on changing the future. While he’d be an oddity and his stupidity leading might exhaust some he’d earn respect in his serious moments and probably fits in well with most boys for being a strict samurai himself, much like many of their former masters. That said, Elizabeth wears the pants in the Citadel when needs be. And if there is conflict it may very well be with the Shinsengumi swords in having to accept serving someone who looks down on the Shinsengumi and once tried to destroy them from the inside (...and mess with their toilet rolls.)• With a starter he’d probably end up with Kasen or Hachisuka. I don’t think he’d judge any sword on their history, wanting to work with them for the sake of the greater good. Naturally, Katsura is used to being a leader and having Elizabeth by his side. He will probably keep somewhat of a distance between himself and his swords.• He’d generally get along but it’s very easy to see him in shenanigans with the attendant type swords who would end up with headaches when pulled into his pace.Sakamoto• I think we’re all in agreement that Sakamoto is hardly a leader, he’s a charismatic, great man but Mutsu is the one usually calling the shots. She’d be a must to make his Citadel ship shape but still! He cares a lot about their mission and would think carefully about what to do when he’s serious every now and then.• He wouldn’t stray away from their mission, he would make sure to be talking to any sword who might want to change history as well. This man knows how to get through to someone. It would still leave him sometimes thinking about how things came about, maybe the bad guys really think they’re doing the right thing trying to change the history? He thinks about the big picture a lot but keeps it to himself.• Mutsunokami is obviously his starter! It’s like welcoming back an old friend. They work well together and its like Mutsu has a second air head to monitor now since Mutsu definitely gets carried away goofing off with Sakamoto.• While he is generally liked of course Sakamoto would still be seen as annoying by somex especially with how bad he is with names stressing out Hizamaru! Hakata the little businessman would he his protégé! They bond over business. (Others are definitely jealous Mutsu has his former master but they don’t so trouble is brewing...)

Omg I made a post about Italian-American Ryan proof entirely out of my ass, all source: dude trust me and how his old workplace looks like venice but that lion of venice thing is making me lose my mind. That's so funny. Katsura does mention apollon medias "griffon" as why Ryan should be let to have wings despite not being able to fly but I choose to believe in this lion of venice truth since it doesn't exactly detail how he ended up coming up with the idea in the 1st place

I know some of katsuras thoughts because I got to leaf through the rising katsura art book a while ago and it mentions inspirations for Ryan's suit (I machine translated the text so I can't get the exact wording but the general gist so this isn't 100% factual), including "he kind of has poofy pants with white stockings and gloves like a prince" and that it fit better for him to be gold and navy instead of gold and black due to the navy fitting better with white stockings and gloves, and that with facial design of the mask he added the blue border to make the white stand out and that its kind of like a "masquerade mask" when seen from the front and its true, it kinda covers the upper part of his face.

Which all was kind of funny to me yet unrelated to everything but now I'm like wow. He's just dressed for the venetian carneval obviously... you can take the man out of Italy but not the Italy out of the man<3

My solution for his anglophone name is that he's italian-american since he always struck me as a bit of a funny anime american stereotype in the first place (egotistical, loud, blonde, etc). To me he is Mr. Worlwide...

Anyhow, the art book also mentions that the wings activating/glowing are his good luck mode (the translation was awfully unclear but this is how I understood it), and it shows a timeline of sketches of him making the shoulder pauldrons bigger and bigger until he just decided to go fuck it and straight up add wings for him instead

I think that because mattia is an Italian name he should just be Italian and speak Italian fluently. Ryan should be hanging out with barnaby and mattia and be like Italian pride<3 randomly and mattia gets excited and speaks to him in Italian while Ryan is like oi oi, now barnaby doesn't understand us... and Barnaby (a genius) is like oh mattia taught me plenty when we were children! It's alright:)

Now Ryan has to face his demons (can understand perfectly but can't reply fluently bc his parents didn't speak with him in Italian enough bc god damn their son is kinda insufferable sometimes). Ryan is getting an identity crisis because why can Barnaby speak Italian better than he does. He has to excuse himself expeditiously. He left his stove on yknow and his iguana misses him, and he's so damn busy

Kotetsu offhandedly mentions that he knows an Italian guy and Ryan is like omg...it's Me. And kotetsu goes like mattia:) he's bunny's friend. And Ryan is crying and throwing up mentally like he's literally right here.... fuck this gay anti-italian earth etc

Some Italians can't speak Italian fluently and they're valid (daily affirmations)

So me and the T&B discord have deduced that Ryan is Italian

I’ve seen some discussion on the fact that Subaru’s character calls back to Super Sentai, and it’s well-known that the character designer of Tiger & Bunny, Masakazu Katsura, is a big fan of Super Sentai.

Amongst the new designs, however, Thomas’ inspiration has been brought up less, and maybe this is entirely a coincidence, but it doesn't feel totally impossible to me that his design would be inspired by Super Sentai as well.

The multiple constellation references of Tiger&Bunny aside (all of them are for an another post), notably Kotetsu and Barnaby represent the constellation Orion. In the start slide of s2, you can see Orion with one green and one pink star. Orion is often depicted in combat with the constellation of Taurus, the very same Thomas has gotten his surname from Subaru’s first name, on the other hand, is the Japanese name for Pleiades, a star cluster within Taurus.

With that in mind, I looked at Uchu Sentai Kyuranger which features the Kyurangers, a team themed after constellations, originally aired from 2017 to 2018. Their Red Ranger named Lucky is the first ranger to have an enhanced form with a different colour from their default, because it turns out that he’s descended from the legendary warrior Orion, which gives him an alternative White Ranger form. It’s not the constellation he primarily references, however, because his own constellation is Leo.

It seems significant considering that Subaru and Thomas reference Kotetsu and Barnaby respectively, whereas the callback to Ryan seems more of a funny coincidence, even if Ryan’s character traits thematically exists between Kotetsu and Barnaby in many ways (also visually, but something for an another post).

It all could be a funny coincidence, but I digress: the T&B wiki references a Power Ranger for the colour change Subaru goes through, but I think it’s interesting for Lucky to be the first Super Sentai on record to have two different colour forms.

Either way, to find any possible inspiration for Thomas, I was looking for a ranger that fits the colour scheme of his hero suit, silver/white.

The Silver Ranger of Kyurangers is called Naga Ray, and he references the constellation Ophiuchus (the reason for the name Naga).

Visually, I think he has much in common with Thomas, not only having very similar hair and the same colour scheme in his civilian wear, you could argue that the snake on his helmet looks somewhat similar to the “T” on Thomas’ hero suit. (Or maybe I’ve just been looking at this for too long.)

Naga is an extra-terrestrial human from a planet from where they have all given up their emotions to become stoics (Thomas is rather stoic as well), and he left his home planet to learn about emotions. Interestingly, he has a partner called Balance, a techno-organic mechanical organism who references the constellation Libra, and the eventual Gold Ranger.

He felt Balance is the key for him to learn emotions, which is why they travel (and steal things from the evil organization of the show as thieves) together.

His special ability is that he can paralyze others while holding eye contact with them, during which his eyes are a vivid green (with slit pupils), much like Thomas’ eye colour.

In the picture above, Naga Ray is depicted alongside his Silver Ranger form Hebitsukai Silver, the third form being Hebitsukai Metal: it’s what he changes into after being brainwashed by a villain. In this form, he’s not only able to paralyze people, but he can control them bodies, which reminds me of the way Thomas was shown to control other people’s bodies in the finale.

I also think it’s interesting that once Naga’s emotions awaken, his home system sends a woman named Echidna to kill him. She’s portrayed by the same actor (all the people from the system have the same face due to not having emotions). She’s named after Echidna, a half-woman half-snake from Greek mythology.

Thomas, of course, has his little sister Ruby, who I think will come up in cour 2...

Initially Echidna helps the Kyurangers escape from the brainwashed Naga and a bigger villain, but then renounces them as awful for leading Naga to develop emotions, while Naga’s partner Balance vows to protect him.

Brainwashed Naga almost causes Echidna to shoot herself with her own gun by using his abilities, but the Kyurangers save her. It seems that Balance and Lucky die in the battle, and Echidna points that the Kyurangers hesitating to take action is what caused this. However, Balance and Lucky are actually only unconscious and fighting the corruption in Naga’s mind and eventually free him.

Echidna decides to not to go through with eliminating Naga and even if she considers emotions useless, she agrees that the Kyurangers are strong due to their emotions. This sort of reminds me of the whole “buddy heroes are stronger for their bonds, not weaker” as Yuri already learned (and yes, it’s nothing significant because it’s a very common trope). She then urges Naga to save the universe and leaves.

Of course, all of that could be a coincidence, even some visual similarities Naga and Thomas have, but I think it’s somewhat likely to have Ruby return as a villain of some sort, especially given the fact that Ouroboros consciously recruits orphans like Nikolai Brahe and the unsolved plot thread of the Nemo Children.

It’s also entirely possible that Ruby could’ve developed a NEXT power like Thomas, even if she didn’t have any at the time. Of course, like Balance (and Lucky and the rest of the Kyurangers), it would make sense for Subaru and the heroes to have Thomas’ back if anything similar happened.

They already supported Thomas when he lost control of himself and started beating the shit out of that criminal with a gun after he shot the civilian. Reading about Echidna made me visualize a scene in which Thomas interferes in some villain activity and a helmet is knocked off, revealing it to be Ruby. I think he would be too shocked to be able to catch her- Would he try to skip sides and seemingly “betray” the heroes to try save his sister?

This would also require Subaru to fully trust him, which would again prove the magic of friendship power of the bonds they make while having a buddy hero partner. Thomas is also a fan of L.L. Audun, who’ll definitely come up, so this could be maybe used to tie him into vigilantism things even further beyond the way he beat up that criminal?..

It would also make sense that since he’s similar to Barnaby, they may have to try to win people back over by divulging his sad backstory to the media (which would put him a similar position as Barnaby, whose sad backstory is also public). I’m not sure what Jungle is planning, since they’re definitely trying to make Thomas into something...

After all, they seemingly sabotage Subaru (his wrist band didn’t go off and alert him heroes are needed) and have very much relegated him into a support role, but if anything happened I think by now Subaru would know better than to act rashly and be frustrated with Thomas. Maybe something similar as to when Kotetsu found Barnaby’s pin in Maverick’s office?..

I imagine there’ll also be a timeskip of some sort (at least enough so that everyone will heal from their injuries), so Ruby too would be older by cour 2 as well, I think an Ouroboros-raised Ruby with NEXT powers would definitely be interesting!

It’s fun to speculate about all of it anyhow. It’s not too long till we’ll see what’ll happen in cour 2 and if Ruby will come up! I definitely think she’ll be important in some way, but I wonder if they'll make her an adversarial force or more of a maiden in distress.

Also, just a disclaimer, I know absolutely nothing about Super Sentai, I just ended up looking at Naga’s wiki page and finding it funny to think about in relation to Thomas.

Someone on Twitter finally located this hard to find oneshot (second Katsura oneshot) and I cannot calm down about this scene in particular.

Firstly, Yuri looks straight up deceased in this whole oneshot, a corpse with lipstick.

Secondly, why did he immediately know what Kotetsu was talking about and already have the TV paused right at the part when Barnaby does his little "fanservice" strut and pose?👀 (The little rarepair goblin in my brain is ACTIVATED)

Lastly, the fact that he just stirs shit up then sits back and acts like he wants nothing to do with it. Yuri living for the chaos as usual...
