Today’s compilation:

12" Of Pleasure 1994 House / Garage House / Dance-Pop

Firmly settling right into the middle of Pride Month with this look back at some vintage, early-to-mid-90s, certifiably gay dance jams. UK label Almighty Records has been a very popular outfit among the gay crowd since its 1989 founding, and with this album from '94, they put together a little collection of tunes that was made of both dance covers from their own catalogue as well as tracks licensed from other labels.

Now, you all know that classic early-to-mid-90s gay club sound. It's that carefree shit that makes you feel like you're dancing blissfully on a light and fluffy cloud. High-pitched string synths that surge and squeal; sharp, rich, and cheery piano chord stabs; soft combinations of kicks and snares; and a female vocal that exhibits some passion as she typically sings about love. It's deadly when done right, but by that same token, given that there's a basic formula for it, it can also feel, well, a bit formulaic and disposable at times too.

But there's two songs that manage to pull that sound off exceptionally well here: the "Woman's Prerogative mix" of Sybil's "When I'm Good and Ready," and the "Mad March Hare mix" of Kylie Minogue's "Better the Devil You Know." Both of these tunes apply that early-to-mid-90s gay dance formula, but Sybil's song comes with these added polka-dot electronic bleeps on it, and Kylie's song is just a prime example of the formula being executed perfectly. And both songs on the production tip involved the same people too. Sybil's was written and produced by Mike Stock and Pete Waterman, and Kylie's was by Stock, Waterman, and Matt Aitken. That Stock, Waterman, and Aitken trio were known as prolific UK pop producers for quite some time too, but Aitken ended up splitting from the other two in 1991.

But my favorite song of all on this album is UK dance group Undercover's 1992 poppy house cover of Gerry Rafferty's 70s smash hit, "Baker Street." The original version of this song features probably the second most iconic use of saxophone in the entire pop music canon—just behind George Michael's "Careless Whisper"—and Undercover cleverly decided to bring it back in the early 90s to use within a dance context. But while that sax part is from the 70s, the use of it here in Undercover's version is also somewhat paradoxically way ahead of its time too, because it's utilized as the song's drop, which seems to presage that whole early-to-mid-2010s craze when using sax as the drop in a dance tune appeared to be all the rage. And I'm sure that Undercover's version received some updated remix treatment in that era too.

I also don't think that most Americans are aware of this song either, because while it was an enormous top-fiver throughout most of Europe, it didn't actually end up charting Stateside at all. So, you could probably slay something like a wedding dancefloor with this in the US, because practically no one would be expecting to hear that famous Gerry Rafferty sax part, and once they did, it might cause them all to collectively lose their shit 🤯. It would probably work better with the radio edit instead of this extended version though, because the radio edit hides the sax until the chorus, and this extended version actually opens with some of it.

And another reason why I particularly adore this song is because it also incorporates my favorite synthesizer sound from this era: the Korg M1's Organ Preset 2, which has been used in a whole bunch of different songs, and perhaps most famously in Crystal Waters' "Gypsy Woman," which is another early 90s gay club classic.

Much of this album honestly feels a bit lacking almost three decades later, but the few tunes that I've mentioned in this post here still make for some exquisite examples of terrific early-to-mid-90s gay dance fare.

honestly the whole “you rode a hammer?” “no i didnt ride the hammer” “the hammer rode you on your back?” scene from thor ragnarok is actually one of the funniest things i have ever seen in a blockbuster movie and i thank every god i can think of for taika waititi and his dumb rock character

Thor: Love and Thunder spoilers. 

This is in no particular order, it’s just me rambling as per usual.

Korg is going to be a dad 😭 I need a series with him and Dwayne (omg… did he call him Dwayne because he’s made of rocks… I just got that… I’m so stupid!) raising their child. Also Taika was right, he really is a gay icon now! (And I thought that we’d never get to see Korg find someone because Taika did an interview around Ragnarok where he said something about his Korg being gay but that they weren’t going to really explore that. I love that we got this, even if it was just a brief scene.)

Love that Thor’s roommate was in the film even if it was brief.

Our Last Summer by Abba playing in the Thor/Jane montage was *chef’s kiss*. Also loved that we got to see glimpses of their love story, since the only thing we’ve gotten up until this point is them kind of getting together in Thor and then they’ve broken up by the time The Dark World takes place. Which was... you know, kind of weird. But the montage was great and it filled in the gaps nicely. Also Thor looking at the child in the store they were passing made me tear up. And Korg saying Thor would be a great dad 😭

Korg mentioning Val’s girlfriend that died! I love how insightful Korg is, but he’s also very stupid sometimes, love it. 

Korg telling Thor that he should call Axl the name he wanted to be called, amazing. Also I liked that while Thor insisted that Axl should go by the name Heimdall gave him it didn’t feel malicious, more misguided, and I’m not saying that that wouldn’t hurt too. But I feel like it was a good way to introduce that topic and deal with it. Because he felt it honoured his dead friend by his son still going by the name he gave him, but then he accepted it and he used the name Axl choose.

I’m really curious now how Korg’s species family dynamics are like. Because in Ragnarok he mentions his mum and his stepdad. But in this one he says that he had two dads who were the ones who “created” him. 

I loved Jane’s storyline, I was sad that she died but I feel like they opened up a possibility of having her and Heimdall back in some way. They should make a series with them and their afterlife in Valhalla. 

Jane agreeing to stay behind when Thor asked her so that they could figure out how to save her and then her breaking that promise to save Thor was great, heart-breaking, but great. Thor being visibly upset about it, knowing she’s going to die because of her decision but also respecting it was amazing to see. She wasn’t a superhero for very long but she made sure that the limited time and power she had counted for something. And they honoured her with a statue and she was welcomed into Valhalla. I think it was great, I really enjoyed her character in this movie and I had to hold back tears several times.

I’m so happy that Taika “got rid of” the Guardians so fast, which is what I wanted. Don’t get me wrong, I like the Guardians, but I wanted Thor to be the focus in his own movie.

People clapped when Heimdall appeared.

I also want a series that just follows that theatre company! Them asking if they should make a play out of the disaster that was still happening was so funny.

I loved that we got a scene in black and white with just splashes of colour, especially since some people hated that Ragnarok was so colourful. It was really cool.

Taika really is a master of making you laugh out loud and in the next scene he rips your heart out. And it doesn’t feel cheap in any way, if you know what I mean. It feels kind of natural. 

Thor being a dad! Cooking for her, making her put on her proper shoes. I love that she drew on Mjölnir. I would love to see more of her, she was so cute. 

When they introduced Hercules in the end credit scene I was like “!! That’s fucking Roy Kent!” I look forward to seeing more of him. 

So those are the things I can remember at the top of my head. Overall I loved the movie. I could have watched it again straight after. And I know it said that Thor will be back but if he’s coming back in a solo movie no one else should be allowed to do it except Taika. Thor belongs to him now! Hell, even if it’s a team up movie, Taika should do it.

So, I saw Thor 4 yesterday

- We expected nothing less than what we got with Taika coming back

- I absolutely loved it

- Valkyrie kissing that girls hand??? I'm swooning and it was only 2 seconds of the film

- Me: I just wanna say, I am part of the LGBTQ community, and this is my best friend Valentina, she's an ally. Say hi, Valentina!

- Korg making little gay lava babies is everything I've ever wanted

- I haven't read the comics so I didn't realise this was going to be Love's orgin story can we get some commotion for UNCLE THOR (and his panflaps or whatever he called them 😭)

- Matt Damon Is Back Bitches (feat. Loki’s iconic all black suit)

- I've always loved Thor, but never had much of a crush on him, until he fucking stabbed Zeus with his own lightning bolt

- Axel was great and I can't wait to see more of him

- and of course, Doctor Jane Foster as The Mighty Thor was brilliant, and I deffo didn't cry when they were at Eternity 😭

- I'm so glad the guardians weren't in it for more than 5 mins tbh

While Tessa’s Valkyrie is def loved by the LGBTQ+ community - I wouldn’t say Waititi is a “gay icon”. My immediate & extended family has ALL the colors of the pride rainbow, multi-generations, & some who work in media/entertainment so we chat about this a lot. His gay character in JoJo was messy, Korg is canonically gay in the comics BUT TW recently said it won’t be shown/character doesn’t have a partner in Thor4...so other than Valkyrie, it’s not like he’s done much for the community. “What we do in the shadows” IS pretty queer, but he’s one of many writers on the TV show. He may want to be an icon, but that’s not how it works. TS discovered that too. ;/

So there is a different timeline where Peggy moved on, but in this timeline Steve and Peggy gets to be happy and grow old together. Steve is happy and he deserves to be :)

Also do u guys ever wonder if steve came back to the same date and place Peggy told him when he was about to crash the plane :((

The way the movie ended tho,, when right after we see Steve and Peggy dancing and kissing it cuts to black and the lyrics of the song start as the credits start rolling too. It’s such a beautiful way to conclude the phase :”( they ended it with Steve in the 40s, the very first avenger and the decade it all began.
