Partly for the prolific volume of projects artists release each year and partly for the fluid definition of an album (running anywhere from three to 13 tracks), an annual ranking of K-pop albums is never easy. As South Korea continues to extend its global musical influence, certain projects transcend hit-song compilations, presenting larger visions and conceptual narratives.

In 2023, stars like V, WOODZ and ONEW used their latest solo projects to share the music that inspires them at their core as artists and let listeners settle into sonic worlds they’ve developed.

First Place: Onew, Circle The First Album

While it’s somewhat criminal to think that 15 years after ONEW’s debut with SHINee in 2008 we only just received his first full Korean album, the singer-songwriter himself would say that now was the perfect time for Circle. A musical journey unlike anything released this year, ONEW shared that he had attempted to record the album’s title track before dropping his Dice EP in early 2022, but felt it wasn’t at the level of perfection it deserved and held onto the song. ONEW then involved himself in every aspect of Circle‘s production process, from meticulous mixing and mastering to tuning, beats, recording and mastering, attesting to the singer-songwriter’s dedication to artistic expression.

The single “O (Circle)” opens the album with an intriguing blend of electronica and strings, while its gospel-tinged chorus emphasizes lyrics about the circular nature of life and how memories, feelings and dreams are all fleeting. The 10 tracks on Circle develop unique transformations from start to finish: the breezy melodies in “Cough” are paired with loneliness-themed lyrics and a melancholy instrumental breakdown, while “Rain on Me” starts with aggressive acoustic guitar strumming before transitioning into an atmospheric, percussive ballad. Sweet surprises abound, too: ONEW scats on the jazz-rap hybrid “Caramel” and gives a glimpse into his indie-rock side on “Parachute.”

The album’s effortless flow is anchored by ONEW’s famously solid yet understated vocals. As Circle concludes with the tender piano ballad “Always” which addresses themes of loyalty and resilience, the listener wonders if it’s an allegory for ONEW’s public journey through health challenges, including vocal cord surgery. Even without any writing credits on Circle, ONEW’s presence is undeniably felt in this seamless collection that boasts an emotional depth brought on by 15 years in the game. That’s the kind of introspection you can’t rush or doctor through A&R but need to cycle through and arrive at when the moment is right. I had to let some time pass before I wrote this. The discourse is heated and polarized.

My first impression upon listening/watching the first time: I did not like it because of fugly white boy, Jack Harlow. I've never liked him, I've never liked his lyrics or his vibe. He is the type of overdone, asshole misogynistic male bullshit rap that had become unavoidable for a while.

I don't have ANY problem with JK singing about sex, having sex, shooting his jizz to the sky or any of that. BRING. THAT. ON. I don't care if the song is about phone sex or masturbating on camera or whatever.

What I do have a problem with is a white guy saying one girl (the black girl) is boring but two girls (add the white girl) is cool. I have a problem with the concept of having women lined up ready to fuck as some sort of thing to laud. And they are all dressed alike, so that means he doesn't care about them, they're all the same. Just another pussy to fuck. Diversity, yay. Not.

I will listen to the alternate version of the song but I will never listen to or stream the version with the rap.

I love Jungkook. I love that he's exploring his sound. He is creating music that speaks to him RIGHT NOW in his career. Do I like that he's put this song out? No. But that's my own personal opinion.

I can't speak for Jungkook, a 26 year old Korean man. He has his own systemic and structural oppressions to deal with.

I am not going to second guess him. He will see the feedback and take it into consideration, I don't have to guess on that, I know he will. They all see what goes on.

I wanted to give JK the benefit of the doubt with Seven. I don't have a problem with Seven the song, but its the hype surrounding it that is perpetuated by the fandom that he is being pushed in the western market. This song proves it.

All that being said, BTS and each individual member all exist within an industry that is heavily influenced by the western market.

As such, every song each member releases will add to the colors that the team will be able to use when they come back together as a group. No one will be surprised if BTS utilizes a hardcore western rapper in the future now. It is just one more color in the mix.

But as my friend says: "Shoot for another Coldplay....They don't need to be lifting people up. They need to find peers. Which is why I would support a Lady Gaga collab with Tae. Which is why Hobi asked for J Cole. That's a peer, man. I can handle Pharrell with them.

The benchmark for peers, to me, is another artist who has nothing to gain from collab'ing with them. An artist who holds their own, on their own, and collabs to let each participant have fun, shine, and grow a bit. Not some newbie who needs the boost. The only exception to that would be if they worked with one of their juniors at Hybe."

the title track TIE A CHERRY is a song that displays sora unapologetic individualism and self-love: not only praising herself visually but also as an artist as she boldly claims that there is no one beating her. the track is written by sora but produced by vivid subunit soda. it builds an atmosphere of freedom with a musical blend of hip-hop and bass to create a fun and engaging sound that leaves the listener feeling good and wanting to shake ass along to it. the instrumental is impressive, to say the least. with catchy filtered vocals and harmonies to exciting synths that compliment the songs bouncy and hard hitting 808’s and bass on the bottom end.

CHERRY is a hip-hop-centered album that showcases sora’s multiple skills along with her expert lyricism. lee manages to mix her powerful raps with sharp digs which we see in BITCHY and NOT FRIENDLY with her signature effortlessly cool yet hard-hitting style , along side her soulful introspective track BETTER which explores how sora hopes that a lover feels better having given up on their relationship suddenly . another slower and sensitive vocal driven track is MY PROBLEM which speaks on a codependent relationship that was almost doomed from the start. tracks such as NEED TO KNOW and XAI mix both her vocals and rap perfectly with a subtle sex appeal and swag. sora herself explained she wanted the album to embody herself ; fun - seen in RED MIND- and sexy- seen in VELVET- with a hint of seriousness as she explores herself.

we see this serious side in the outro FUN GIRL. it is a stripped one take track where sora is playing the guitar and singing about how she struggles to view herself as someone worth love but also acknowledges that she shouldn’t internalize rejection and understanding that it’s could also come from the other persons flaws and not purely her own. her confidence may come across as cocky and undesirable due to societies expectations of woman. she has faced backlash in korean media for being openly feminist and speaking out of gender equality. lee ends the album repeating “life’s unfair’’. this sentiment reflects the overall message of the album, life is hard yet it’s fun. as her melody and lyrics highlight what a painful reality it is.it as a deeply raw and honest track that exposes sora’s inner most worries and thoughts.

there are multiple tracks that are definite anthems and fun listens as well as sexier tracks , every single one deserves just as much attention as the next. soras authentic style and fun energy that she brings on her debut album cannot go unnoticed. with her being album to create this on her debut it definitely definitely provides a framework for her upcoming releases leaving us all excited for what’s to come.

SISI and LEO picked her up during the bridge as she rapped along and wiped her tears. it was a fun and emotional moment that went viral

SORA’S visuals and aesthetic for the era was a hit not only among brites but among the general public as well. her skunk hair sparked a trend amongst idols that hair with many sporting the look later on. although she was not the first to wear it, she definitely popularized it.

Namjoon & Grace - First Meeting

It’s often said that when BTS came together, it was fate. That the merging of eight talented people had been a once in a lifetime opportunity that would never happen again due to their individual personalities, talents, skills and backgrounds. And while some believed the origins of BTS started with Namjoon, Yoongi and Hoseok - it was actually the meeting between Namjoon and Grace. 

He had signed with Big Hit Entertainment and Hitman Bang two weeks ago to start life as a trainee. Hitman Bang was putting together a hip-hop group (later an idol group) and Namjoon was the first piece of the puzzle, his rapping skills were superior to what had been picked before and he was nearly fluent in English. He just needed to be molded and formed into what he would later become - RM. 

But first, there was someone who he would have to meet who would become his mentor.

It had been clear from the start that the hip-hop group would be men but his mentor would be a woman, five years older than himself. Grace Chu had entered Big Hit over a year ago as a bit of an enigma - she had training in ballet and ballroom dancing, she could sing, she was fluent in English having been born in the UK, she was somewhat fluent in German and she had the upbringing of a mixed Korean-British household. 

Yet, there were no plans to make her an idol.

She was back up - learning the ropes of singing to do background vocals, rapping, contemporary dancing, how to look like an idol, how to work a crowd but there were no concrete plans. A spare part yet used for everything including paid work as an assistant to various people in the building. Her training had been done by Lee Hyun, who was currently in the military.

Namjoon stopped outside the small room that had been set aside for Grace. It was smack in the middle of the managers and producers, so she could go between the two departments easily. He could hear typing behind the door and every now and then he could hear classical music playing. 

Another piece of the large puzzle that was Grace. 

“Come in,” came a soft voice when Namjoon knocked on the door and he paused, taking a deep breath before opening it. 

He didn’t know what he expected but he’d later admitted he expected her to look more European than Korean. She was only 5’4, later 5’8 in heels, and dark brown, almost black curly hair that had been pulled into a ponytail. Her Korean eyes were dark brown yet small flecks of hazel in them. She was tan but not overly. 

“Kim Namjoon?” she asked, grinning slightly at the tall boy in front of her who was all arms and legs, his face a bit too big for this body.

He bowed politely then remembered she was British so he held out his hand, “Pleasure to meet you, Miss. Chu.”

Perfect English, near enough. If not sounding a bit too American for her liking. 

“Please, call me Grace…unless you prefer to call me noona? I’ll leave that up to you.”

Her accent was a typical British accent, maybe slightly upper class if Namjoon paid close attention to it. There was something else underneath it as well but he couldn’t tell what it was.

“Grace is fine with me,” he paused and stood there awkwardly. She was five years his senior, she had been in the company for over a year and while he expected her to take control of the conversation immediately, she could tell he was nervous and unsure.

“Don’t worry Namjoon, I don’t bite. Hitman Bang told me everything, though Bang PD would be the right thing to call him I suppose. He’s sent you to me for mentoring though I’m going to be honest, I don’t know much about rap or hip-hop. I’m only doing the lessons because I’m going to be doing background vocals for the next big hip-hop group,” she sighed and nodded at the chairs in front of the desk. “Take your weight off your feet Namjoon.”

He slowly sank into one of the chairs. “Did he say what you’re mentoring me in?”

“English is one, though you speak perfect English to me. Maybe a bit of work needs to be done on pronunciation but only a bit. And I’m meant to teach you the way of the idol life,” Grace suddenly grinned. It had occurred to her, as it had Namjoon, that she would be his idol mentor while not being slated to be an idol herself. 

“You’re not going to be put forward as a solo artist?” he found himself asking, seeing the pictures of the artists and bands that had gone before on the wall behind Grace’s desk.

“My contract is purely work - I’m going to be a trainee but one who is going to help other artists, like yourself. Bang PD wants to focus on the new hip-hop group, BPB, which won’t be co-ed. I’ll help with background vocals, meetings, some lyrics but not many.”

Namjoon sighed and looked down at his hands, fiddling with a ring that was on his index finger. “Well, thank you Grace then. For all the future help you’ll give me.”

God he was cute. 

Sixteen years old and already sounding like a leader. 

“You are more than welcome Namjoon. So, let’s work out a schedule. It’s going to be one to one with you and me for a while until others are signed - I believe there’s more auditions coming. Why don’t you work out a list of things you want to learn and I’ll schedule lessons around your training and school,” Grace said as she got out her diary. 

He was silent for a moment and she wondered if she had said the wrong thing when he spoke, shyly for the first time since entering the room. 

“Can I call you Gigi?”

Of all the nicknames she had been given in her life, Gigi was not one of them. It was certainly unique and not what she was expecting - it was a bit hard to create a nickname out of Grace or even her Korean name, Hea. 

“Only if I can call Joon.”

From that moment on, a solid relationship between mentor and student was formed. Within a month to a year, it would change to leader and artist, not before it was brother and sister. Grace would become Namjoon’s back, his silent supporter, his go-to for when being a leader got too much or when he couldn’t translate. Namjoon in return would become Grace’s solo supporter, championing the use of her lyrics and notes, spearheading her career as Grace Chu, not as BTS. 

Their family would form when six others would join that small little office and make their introductions to their leader and their noona.

O.M.G, is an originally animated six-member girl group created in late 2013 by Lucia Martinez, or better known as "Keisha" from her character in O.M.G, under her youtube channel "Envious Martini" accompanied by her 5 other girlfriends for fun. They would post a lot of vlogs, grwm (get ready with me's), mukbangs, reaction/commentary, and livestreams, of course, none of these posts were ever serious. And a lot of their videos would be clipped to be used as memes that would instantly catch fire, and their faces would soon be very recognisable. In fact It wouldnt even take long for O.M.G to earn a lot of attention from Korean and Western K-POP fans when "Molly (claimed song!! playboi carti)", which is a scrap unreleased track by the way, would randomly go viral at 2.3 million views on youtube and Envious martini would begin to grow a humble following of 430K followers for their music, art and shitposts.

All music production, concepts, and choreography were created by Keisha with the help of the 5 girls behind the scenes. For example, in order for Keisha to be able to animate the choreography, the girls would make dance routines together, figuring out positions and record it for Keisha to take as reference. This also went for vocals and rapping. All girls played their parts accordingly to how they felt comfortable and were suitable to each member. And then it would be in mid-June of 2014 that the girls would decide to bring Keisha's art to life and replace the characters of O.M.G with themselves.

And in 2015, after being invited to many interviews and talk shows and entering many survival shows and competitions, it would be one competition show in particular, held by JYP which O.M.G would win, where they would officially be adopted under JYP entertainment and debut as a JYP girl group in the same year. But it wasn't until 2016 after much debate surrounding the group that O.M.G. was finally recognised and accepted as a KPOP group.

AESPA 5TH MEMBER INTRODUCTION...

Y/N) (L/N) - A young full-born Korean 19-year-old girl who pursued her dream as a kpop idol at the age of 17 with the song 'Black Mamaba'. She was born on November 17th, 2003 being the youngest member of her group. Being the youngest has many advantages such as being the one with the bigger opinion, getting looked after and being spoilt. Some of the disadvantages are being the target of fans and being labeled selfish, being called a pick me when being happy, and last but not least, being overly sexualized by men twice her age.

(Y/N) was born into a rich and prestigious family. Her father was the CEO of a large business whilst her mother was a song producer who helped produce many hit songs with artists such as Little Mix, Ariana grande, Kai, Taylor swift, NCT, and more. Fans found this as another reason to hate on (Y/N), they believed her status was the only reason she was able to be in the company.

(Y/N)'s music taste isn't to take lightly, she listens to a different variety of music which consists of RnB, 90s rap, rock, and more. (Y/N) had appeared on sm trainee's a few times but went unnoticed as she kept her distance. Red velvet raised her and took care of her and Yeri the majority of the time. When learning the choreography of monster by Exo, (Y/N) was interrupted by the door opening. Turns out a few of the Exo members were passing down the hall and happened to hear their song, ever since then (Y/N) was officially exo's new baby.

When she was 15, (Y/N) got cast in 2-3 K-dramas acting as the younger sister or the younger version of many female actresses. These rolls were minor and were part of many underrated K-dramas but from then she's had a tiny fanbase. She soon disappeared from the acting industry when she and Jisung's relationship began not wanting to cause any trouble in her relationship with the idol.

(Y/N) (L/N) is now one of the most successful 4th generation idols, with all of her M/V's hitting over 100 million views. Now the story begins, we start to learn the hardships of being a 'rookie' idol and being in an exposed relationship. Let's wish (Y/N) good luck in her time being an idol.

J - The 1st Album impressions/opinions

this is a 2nd/3rd impressions post bc i just had to listen to the whole thing a few times before actually putting anything to paper. disclaimer that i've been waiting for this album since before it was even officially announced and jaehyun was just being coy about potentially dropping something in august so this has been very VERY highly anticipated & will go platinum in my airpods <3

Smoke - watched the MV several times over for the plot <3 i LOVEE love the verses & prechorus & how they build up to the chorus, and the chorus!! absolutely fed w those delicious deep register subrapper vocals

Roses - also very familiar w/this track as it's been on repeat since it dropped! the CHOIR ECHOOO and the valentine's gag is crazy, YES I DO WANNA BE YOURSSS <3 especially loved the contrast in the pre-release mv that combined roses & dandelions, absolutely serving desperate rnb guy sobbing on his hands and knees in the rain begging for his bitch back

Flamin' Hot Lemon - my notes for this are very exclamation pointed and incoherent so i will report accordingly: THE PRECHORUS!!!!!!!! UGHHHH BUT I HOPE THAT U DONT PICK NOBODY ELSEE!! the rapping !!!!! his lower register <333

Dandelion - the mv for this caused me genuine psychic damage. he's just soooo quirky professor manic pixie dream man husband that dies at the beginning of the move coded i need to eat him. a tune to which i would frolic in a sunny field. again love the layering in the prechorus, reminds me of blueberry eyes which i also love, FALSETTO ADLIBS <33

Completely - lyrically.. just incredible. it's so "to be known is to be loved." it feels so soothing on the wound of unknowability & unlovability. have already recommended it to a friend on the basis of it sounding like a little mix ballad, like i could very much imagine perrie and leigh-anne's voices esp in the chorus <3 another gorgeous display of his range. a bitch might have teared up

Easy - more Korean-heavy so it was harder for me to immediately follow the meaning of the song, but vocally and production-wise still very up to the standards of the rest of the tracks!! honestly feels very nct 127 b-side coded, he should link up w those guys and collab or smth :)

Can't Get You - love lovee that thrumming instrumental, also reminds me of Orange Seoul which was one of my fav Walk tracks <3 love his little whiny sYstem, & the backing vocals again are just lovely. the lyrics!!!! i know you know!! I KNOW YUNOH!!!! and the way he shouts OH DARLIN' and the bridge slides into that sexy brass solo!! and as usual the falsetto adlibs <33

overall: i knew mr jung jaehyun was gonna DELIVER some rnb excellence on this album, genuinely one of my most anticipated albums of this year <3 it's so well-put together & cohesive, i'm so glad to see that he worked on this for so long w a specific creative vision in mind and it came to fruition. i loved hearing his range from falsetto-heavy songs to that deeper talk-singing register. valentines were ABSOLUTELYYY fed w this one <3
