This manga starts off with a bang, seeing our heroine, the warm and soft Hanaoka Sanchi, mourning the tragic death of her parents at their funeral. Once condolences have been received, reality smacks poor Sanchi in the face rather hard - as a 16 year old high schooler, she has no real way of affording and keeping up the apartment her family was living in on her own.

Cue the entrance of one Saionji Koichi, a mysterious and handsome (is it really any other way?) senior from Sanchi’s school who arrives at the funeral to lay down some striking info - He is the landlord of Sanchi’s apartment, and he knows she won’t be able to make ends meet by herself. However, for reasons undisclosed, he is more than happy to let Sanchi live with him in the same building.... as his wife.

And thus, shenanigans ensue.

Sanchi resigns herself to this new reality and plays housewife for Koichi to the best of her abilities. But it’s quickly clear that Koichi has the emotional range of a robot, and despite being ‘engaged,’ the idea of coupling with Koichi for pure convenience instead of love weighs on her.

However, fortunately for our heroine, Koichi isn’t really as emotionless as he seems...

He just needs some love to melt his icy exterior.

I really enjoyed this manga for all of the fluffy goodness it had to offer. Although it starts off with a pretty cliche opener, the manga quickly veers into a softer route, and instead of melodrama and convoluted love triangles, it opts to showcase tenderness and the cute story of two teenagers who find love in their own clumsy, low-key way. There is some drama, make no mistake, but presented more as obstacles for the lovebirds to overcome rather than the focus in-and-of itself. In fact, the main conflict for Sanchi and Koichi to overcome is not trouble from the outside, but trouble that comes from within, as they learn to live and compromise together despite their vastly different personalities. Of course, it is Koichi that changes the most, and his efforts to bond with and woo Sanchi make for a few swoon-worthy moments.

As a final note, I was particularly pleasantly surprised with the treatment of two characters who, in any other shoujo, would’ve most likely been relegated to bitter rivals, but here become friends of the couple - particularly one who starts out as a jilted fiancee and later becomes a friend and is present for the final big event of the series.

The only nitpick I have about the series is the idea that Sanchi, a 16 year old girl, needs to be a proper housewife to and look after a guy she just met - typical values dissonance. But if you’re looking for a rather short read with minimal angst and plenty of cute high school romance with a teary-eyed, sweet ending, go for this one. All 19 chapters can be found for free on English online. 8/10

Okay to begin with, here’s a poster for a light novel (Cake Ouji no Specialité from Takafumi Nanatsuki). I thought the guy really looked like Kakeru from Orange. And I was right since Takano Ichigo illustrated the covers. xD

I went to a bookstore in Kyoto so here’s some series I recognized. There were a bit more than I took pictures of, but a Caucasian dude was staring at me weirdly as I took pictures. Maybe he was surprised to find a young guy with such interest in shoujo mangas?

In Ochanomizu (neighborhood to the southeast of Akihabara), I passed by the headquarters of Hakusensha, a magazine, manga and light novel publishing company that has, among other unsavory stuff, Melody, Lala and Hana to Yume (and their deriviatives) magazines under its belt.

Notice the Madara (from Natsume Yuujinchou) plushies and the posters for Fukumenkei Noise (AKA Anonymous Noise) and 3-gatsu no Lion (AKA March Comes in like a Lion).

In Harajuku, there were cute billboard ads with shoujo manga-like art. ^^

Next we went to Ikebukuro, a neighborhood like Akihabara (in the manga/anime sense), but catering more to the female crowd (shoujo/josei manga/anime, boy bands/male idols, BL/yaoi, butler cafes instead of maid cafes, etc). I personally found Akihabara a bit crude with the maid cafes (there was even a high school girl cafe) and the few adult material shops in the sidestreets, but whatever floats your goat.  ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

There’s also the biggest Animate of all of Japan (or so I’ve heard). Animate is a chain store selling manga/anime merchandise (magazines, manga, anime CDs, figurines, charms straps, posters, cups, clear folders, plushies, doujinshis, you name it).
