chapter 1 -starless back rooms-

saki: (This piece of paper flew over from somewhere… Oh, it was from the voice training room.)

saki: Uwah, I can’t catch it.

heath: What are you doing? 

saki: Oh, Heath-san. That piece of paper flew out of the voice training room.

heath: Oh sorry, that’s mine. I got dragged away by Kongou, so the room has been vacant for a bit. He finally let me go once he saw me eat my lunch… It was a massive serving too.

saki: Fufu, do you have practice now?

heath: I was planning to shut myself away in the voice training room for a while. If you’re interested would you like to join me?

heath: I should pick all this paper up, my bad.

saki: I’ll help you. Ah, this is…

heath: The the lyrics to ‘Dokuhebi’, the show B performed for the store’s second anniversary. I usually lock myself in here to write new songs, however today I’ve been thinking about that show.

saki: Your second anniversary show you mean?

heath: I’d rather not remember the period of time after the second anniversary up until the new year but it’s not like I could ever forget it either. I caused my team a lot of hardship. But the worst part was being stuck sitting in that hospital bed whilst my words were stolen from me. It was hell.

saki: Heath-san…

heath: My songs are my very soul. By shouting them out into the world, I can prove that I’m alive. That I exist. So that’s why ever since I got discharged from the hospital, I’ve been thinking about my songs… As well as B’s shows.

saki: It’s true that you’ve made every single song for B’s shows.

heath: …Say, what do you think of the current state of B’s performances? Let me know how you honestly feel about them, what is Team B in your eyes?

heath: The show will be starting soon, did you come to wish me well? I’ll make sure to meet your expectations. I’ll get both the stage and the audience fired up. I’ll put on a show thats power will impress you, kind of like a power play. Don’t go forgetting that, ok?

saki: Heath-san… You’re really motivated today, aren’t you?

heath: I guess so, you could call it that. It’s because seeing your face energises me. To be honest, I had just been thinking, what direction am I trying to take my performances in? But then when I saw your face, the answer came to me.

I can’t always envision tomorrow and yesterday won’t ever come back. All I have is the present. That’s what just clicked for me…

I had two reasons for coming to this store. The first was to give life to my lyrics. And the second was to have those lyrics be heard by those that I want to hear them. Those reasons haven’t changed and won’t ever change… They can’t be changed.

saki: …Heath-san?

heath: I’d like for you to keep watching the way I live my life. Just as you have been up and until now… Please continue doing so.

saki: Of course. I’ll always be here to watch your shows.

heath: Yeah. I’ll do my best. You should get to your seat already, I’m gonna go all out straight out the gate, so make sure you keep up.

I do think Cairngorm is a very interesting character. I really like them- I just wish Ichikawa was more clear on if the switch was really honest or if they just got manipulated by Aechmea. I always thought it was more of manipulation as I felt like the prince just put on gender roles so that Cairn (or Welegato at this point) would be more like a “wife”.

I think so especially since gems don’t have concept of gender…AT ALL. I don’t think Wele is really trans if it’s not even really a thing in their society and if I remember correctly they still used their old pronouns (I could be wrong tho). I think it’s a weird switch from how the hnk fandom knowing how manipulative Aechmea is doesn’t really question that much if what happened to Welegato was actually controlled by him or something.

But honestly- i really love seeing different takes on this character since I love them a lot- so I’m happy to see anyone talking about them, wether I agree with them or not. You don’t have to answer to this hjshshsj.

Well, I do think it being ambiguous is the intent, and there definitely is room for Aechmea being manipulative and the gender stuff being part of that

But!

So far in this story I've erred on the side of characters being less sinister than they could be, and tbh I think that's been accurate. Kongou was ultimately as good as he seemed, Aechmea was revealed to basically be a bodhisattva (forgoing his own chance at eternal rest to spend thousands of years trying to help those who would be left behind), etc.

It's like... It feels like there's a consistent theme of people hurting others not out of malice or even necessarily selfishness, but out of a want to do something good. Kongou wanted to build a paradise for the gems, Aechmea wanted all the damned souls to get rest, Phos wanted... a lot of things, but none of them particularly bad.

And all of them caused so much suffering with those pure wishes

So basically tl;dr it feels more thematically consistent if he was genuinely trying to help, at least to me.

And for the gender stuff like, I think the moon chapters are very aware of the fact that the gems do not have gender, and Werregat (that's what my translation uses at least) being so feminine is very much an outlier.

(there's even the bit around the wedding where what's his face calls Phos a woman and then goes "well, that's not right" and Phos is just kind of confused)

And like, the easy analogy from their situation to a trans person's, the big shifts in presentation, them being the gem who wants to change their body most, them being the one gem that gets a new name, on top of the direct gender stuff

feels like it's supposed to be a kind of transition, or at least choosing to adopt a gender when they previously had none. Which is to say, the gems don't have gender... but the Lunarians do, and on being introduced to the concept Werregat seemingly embraced it.

(and as for pronouns, that's complicated b/c in Japanese you can easily just avoid using gendered pronouns at all, and I assume that the text just continued to do that even after Cairn became Princess and such. so like, less continuing to use whatever pronouns and more continuing to not use them.

with that said like. eh. even if it were originally english, pronouns don't have to change, things are complicated. even when I say Werregat is trans I don't strictly mean they're literally a human trans woman so much as there is Gender going on, and it's feminine when it usually isn't.

also like, the rare occasions the language demands you do use gendered pronouns the gems tend to lean male (like Bort calling Dia "nii-san" and not "nee-san"), and again, it's just hard not to take Werregat being so feminine as a reversal of that.)

anyway, I don't know how much this makes sense but. yeag. 👍

Team B songs... completely forgot how insane some of their beatmaps are. I got lucky when the bonus songs were Kyokuya and Idaten for the days I focused on Team B. To the players who managed to survive the other songs, otsu~

Overall, I’m salty because it felt like having two events at once (the main Starless team and whatever other team of the player’s choosing for the search points). As a f2p player, I personally felt stressed out going for the 5mil and 100k (for each team) rewards and barely made it before the ending date.

However, I do understand it’s a new style that Donuts is testing so it wasn’t bound to be perfect. They earn *some* respect in nerfing the total point requirements for the team stories, but by then I got the impression that most of the player base already lost morale lol. If they ever intend to bring it back in the future (they better not 💖🔪), I hope they get some player feedback because the system needs improvement or I’ll be more annoying next time.

For a season finale... it felt meh. tbh I sped through the first main storyline chapters mostly because it was already kind of boring and have only read Team K’s side so far.

Master-san... can you at least take your kid and properly raise (and feed) him. When he straight up tells Gui that he can’t take him along because of Gui’s uncertain response when asked if he learned anything about the “heart” at Starless... I felt SO BAD for Gui. C’mon dude the kid is TRYING but everyone here sucks!! ffs Kongou is his only functional parental figure at Starless.

I’m tired of seeing MC get knocked out, go on some bad memory trip, and we still learn nothing new in the end. But at least Kei gets all distressed over the MC and I love witnessing that man in turmoil and angst. 🙃

Iwami: If you care about Starless, don’t trust Kei too much. What that guy considers as important is different from you. (FUTURE SHOWDOWN LET’S GO my Kei penlights are ready.)

"Summary" Arpeggio Chapter 161

Here we go again. Also none of you know how hard I have to fight for the raws everytime (I literally had to involve TOR because sweet little mangagun is whiny).

We start with Ise at Hashirajima, who is very excited about some transmission coming in. Takao, Kaga (I think?) and Hiei (who is preparing a Kongou fest goin by a banner in the background? What are you doing young lady?) are also still vibing there. Update on Ise: going by dialog and following pannels I think she just lost an IT battle against Lexington. Choukai is also communicating with Lexington, who just appeared from underwater, asking for berth 2, so I assume she wants to dock at Hashirajima. Kirishima and Haruna re there as well, btw. Ise states that Lex took control of the second berth and that she herself lost (see above); this makes Kirishima and Haruna essentially sweatdrop. Inside Hashirajima, Iona is drinking tea with Choukai. Iona proposes giving "Him" (Or them? Iona isn't actually saying 彼 ("kare", he), so she's probs not actually saying "he" and Google is just scrambling) a souvenir to which Choukai replies that "during the time they had it" they "carried out some maintenance & repairs". Iona asks if that is okay and Choukai essentially just says that it's enough and that she (Iona) will be pleased.

We then see Gunzou doing some gardening work and smiling out at Lexington in the distance.

Under the surface, we are now back with our favourite Walter sub: U 2501, where everyone is pretty excited about being fully maintained.

So, that answers the question of who was in their care and maybe it was "he" after all.

Lex' mental model is vibing in the sub and the captain asks where they're gonna meet up with her ship body. They agree to go to Pearl Harbor and meet up with the carrier on the way asap. (in case any of you need this info for fanfic or smth: they're travelling with 80 knots, will meet with Lexington in 10 hours and then arrive at Pearl Harbor ca. 40 hours later).

After this is sorted out, Lexington asks the captain what they're gonna do afterwards, to which he answers with the plan to meet up with Musashi.

Lexington reacts to this with "......yes" and a potentially sus smile, before telling him that she has a present for him. As Fleet Flagship of the North American Pacific Fleet, Lexington grants U 2501 access to the Joint Tactical Network of the corresponding fleet. Information access coordinates are A949736765Y1775.

Why am I giving you this info? Because it's mostly for me in case I need it and I'm not gonna save the screenshot.

Lex ends the exchange with "the quantum sampling command pattern... that's right, it's silver."

The crew states how that is a colour that fits her, U2501 asks if they want to accept that and the captain asks Lex whether that's really alright, then accepts when she says yes.

U 2501, Union Core number 2003, accepts and starts connecting to the Network.

According to Lexington, Musashi is aware of everyone's actions and denying access to the Tactical Network to keep a secret(s). She then goes on with saying that the need for that is already gone, he asks what she means and she answers that he now has all the information and has to figure this out himself.

Lex then goes on saying that she doesn't want to know it or see it, that she doesn't want to hear the answer if it exists, that there is always a reality he has to attain and that the only thing she can give them is "to beckon them". I'm not sure what the translator wants from me here. Like I get the gist, I just can't explain it.

Mr. captain (who we are gonna call Käpt'n until someone says his name again because I have legit no idea) replies that, no matter what the truth might be, they are deeply grateful to Lexington.

Scene change to San Diego, Underground Naval Port, where Hibiki enters the... office? of Hakugei 3's captain (Komaki), who welcomes her and tells her that she got permission to go to Washington with the departure being tomorrow night.

She thanks him and he says that "Leutnant Oscar" did the most work on the American side of things. "Lt. Avery Oscar" is, of course, the Admiralty Code/Gretel herself.

Gretel introduces herself and promises to take Hibiki to Washington.

We then get a scene switch to Sevastopol where one of those "angel" dudes is chilling in a library of some sort. He's talking to himself about being a knight and having reincarnated after having answered the angel's call, how they offer only "his" feelings from when "he" sacrificed himself. He also says "I won't betray you, never. For that reason, even knights will cross swords. I am also one of them, First One. My philosophy is that that person... is inside Lady Gretel. Augusta, I'm the one who reincarnated you, it was he who chose me and when your and that person's feelings intersect, how should I react?", twirling a feather between his fingers.

We are then shown the mentioned Augusta Gabriel as a dude putting on a jacket.

And that's the chapter. I'm still having bets running on "magic exists in this universe" but I'm also absolutely ready for some insane tech answer to all this

saki: Hello everyone.

mizuki: Yo, we've been waitin' for you, Saki. Now everyone is here.

lico: And so? What did you call us here for?

mizuki: Because the next show is gonna be us, obviously!

lico: Really? But next is the Valentine's Day show, isn't it?

hinata: A team B solo show? Woohoo!

kongou: We performed for White Day last year, so this year we're doing Valentine's?

ran: Oo! I'm lookin' forward to what kinda song Heath comes up with.

saki: I'm sure your Valentine's show will be a blast.

mizuki: Of course. We're gonna go all out an—

lico: Stop right there.

mizuki: Huh?

lico: I'm not letting this show end up like how White Day did last year. Women hold Valentine's Day in high regard, it's a special event for them, so there'll be no violence.

mizuki: What's your problem?

lico: How come you actually just said a normal idea right now? But, we can't be making the guests cook, right?

kongou: Having them make chocolate with us would be difficult, but decorating would be possible. For example, we can prepare chocolate cupcakes and decorate them with the customers. How does that sound?

ran: Ooh, that sounds fun!

hinata: What kind of toppings will there be? Can I make some suggestions too?

kongou: Sure. We can brainstorm what would be good toppings to provide. If there's a larger variety I'm sure it'll be more fun.

hinata: Yay! Ok then umm, I'd like fruits, cream, cookies and marshmallows...

lico: We can't fit that many more extra tables in the restaurant. Well, whatever, how about we let the guests choose their toppings when they order? Then we can bring the stuff to their table and decorate the cupcakes there with them.

mizuki: What the fuck do we need to do all that for?

ran: What!? Ya don't think it sounds fun, Mizuki? What do ya think of my idea, Nee-chan?

saki: I think its great.

heath: We also went shopping for New Year's and Halloween.

kongou: Yeah. It's like it's become tradition for us to go out as a group for our seasonal performances.

mizuki: Oi, where's the meat section at?

ran: They're doin' taste tests of fried stuff over there!

lico: Hold up, what does meat have to do with anything? We're here to get toppings to put on top of cupcakes with our fans... Jeez, oh, these are cute.

kongou: How about we get them? Though, if they were a little smaller they would be easier to put on a cupcake.

lico: Hmm.

heath: I found something we can use so I'm putting it in the trolley.

kongou: Sure, thanks.

mizuki: Oi Kongou, you're just buying sweet shit, candy ain't gonna fill anyones stomach.

kongou: Well of course it's all sweet. There's going to be special Valentine's menu items.

mizuki: Tch, pain in the ass. Then you shoulda just come shopping on your own.

kongou: Well that may be true...

lico: You're the one who wanted to tag along in the first place, Mizuki. Instead of complaining how about you pick out some toppings too?

mizuki: Oh, they're doing taste tests over there!

ran: Alrighty, all the additional shoppin' should be done now.

ran: Hm?

ran (on phone): Heya, it's me. Yeah, I'm on my way back now.

ran (on phone): Ooh, so somethin' finally came up. Yeah, be there in a moment.

-alleyway, day-

underling: Good work out there.

ran: Man~ And here I was lookin' forward to participatin’ in the cupcake trial after finishin’ my errands.

underling: My bad, bro.

ran: I’m jokin' don't worry bout it. And so? What happened?

underling: Well...

-thug explains situation to ran-

ran: I see...

underling: Yeah. There's evidence of them being drowned, however any info about who they were working for has been scrubbed clean. 

ran: Hmm. That's not a good sign.

underling: Um, bro... Looking into this any further is dangerous. Please hear me out, I suggest you come back already.

ran: What? What happened for ya to say somethin' like that?

underling: Well, I received a message from the boss... He said that if you're going to keep doing whatever you want, then he'll have to remind you of your place. So let's give up on this already! We can't have you losing face before you become the head.

ran: Dummy. I can't back down now.

underling: But...!

ran: I started this. If I don't see it through to the end then I can't take responsibility for it. Even as things are now, I'm still able to properly assess the situation. Tell my old man that I know what I'm doin'.

ran: I was actually just out doin' some extra shoppin'. I got some chocolate pens and chocolate sprinkles, stuff like that. See?

Yamakaze is trying to sleep next door.” Depending on what went on during the day, Shigure is either trying to rein in her more rambunctious sisters, or trying to relax and get some rest herself. In terms of leisure, she’ll either be getting snacks with her sisters or her friends in the Nishimura fleet or reading something in her room.

It isn’t too out of the ordinary for Shoukaku to spend a good hour or so listening to her younger sister talk about her day. Whether it be one of her sister’s accomplisments that day or Zuikaku’s latest kerfuffle with Kaga. At the very least, Zuikaku is a gifted storyteller so Shoukaku doesn’t mind.
