Kongōrikishi (金剛力士) or Niō (仁王) are two wrath-filled and muscular guardians of the Buddha, standing today at the entrance of many Buddhist temples in China, Japan and Korea in the form of frightening wrestler-like statues. They are manifestations of the Bodhisattva Vajrapāṇi protector deity and are part of the Mahayana pantheon. According to Japanese tradition, they travelled with the historical Buddha to protect him. Within the generally pacifist traditions of Buddhism, stories of Niō guardians like Kongōrikishi justified the use of physical force to protect cherished values and beliefs against evil.

Kongōrikishi are an interesting case of the possible transmission of the image of the Greek hero Heracles to East Asia along the Silk Road. Heracles was used in Greco-Buddhist art to represent Vajrapani, the protector of the Buddha, and his representation was then used in China and Japan to depict the protector gods of Buddhist temples. This transmission is part of the wider Greco-Buddhist syncretic phenomenon, where Buddhism interacted with the Hellenistic culture of Central Asia from the 4th century BCE to the 4th century CE

Diante das estátuas gigantes guardiãs Kongo Rikishi no Portão Nandaimon do Templo Tōdai-ji

Nandaimon é vigiado à direita e à esquerda pelas estátuas Kongo Rikishi, também chamadas de Reis Guardiões Nio, representados como dois guardiões coléricos e musculosos de Buda. De acordo com a história do budismo japonês, eles viajaram com Buda para protegê-lo dos inimigos, por isso desde então são colocados na entrada de muitos templos budistas na forma de estátuas assustadoras, semelhantes a lutadores de aparência demoníaca, assustadora e feroz.

Normalmente, os dois deuses guardiões Nio de um templo ficam de frente para o portão principal e consistem em Agyo, voltado para a direita e abrindo a boca, e Ungyo, voltado para a esquerda com a boca fechada. Mas as estátuas do Grande Portão Sul de Tōdai-ji, criadas pelos escultores Unkei e Kaikei, estão posicionadas em um estilo raro: em vez de frente a frente, estão invertidas do padrão típico. Kaikei (1183-1236) ajudou a estabelecer o padrão tradicional da escultura budista no Japão. Junto com seu pai e seu irmão Unkei, ele fez estátuas para os templos de Kōfuku e Tōdai-ji em Nara.
