Cuckoo (2024)

As a horror film, this is better served in how it executes its concepts than in what it’s going for, all told. This concept, parasitic humanoids insinuating their ways into families, paired with its strong science fiction through line, makes this essentially Hanna Bergholm’s Hatching meets Vivarium, and the influence that these cuckoos have in creating the effect of time loops with their voices folds in an element of The Endless or perhaps Koko-di Koko-da. It is nice to note that this isn’t simply yet another indie horror that’s a Metaphor For Trauma. Gretchen’s unresolved grief over her mother’s passing serves to motivate her issues with her folks, and makes for a touching moment when she hears a message left on her mother’s answering machine by her half-sister. To that end, this at least gestures to the ‘nature vs nurture’ argument, but again this is not a primary focus. These elements are well-executed and have an effectively creepy mother-creature at the heart of it. But they’re not exactly pushing the medium forward from a narrative perspective. At this point, I don’t think anyone should even need to be reminded of what a cuckoo does with other birds’ nests. But in its execution there are some remarkable ideas. Doubling in the form of shadows or the reflection in a two-way mirror gestures to the ideas of copying or replacing someone with an imitation of them, and the mother-monster is introduced by hers, and often is proceeded by her shadow in a scene. Looping a scene in the edit, dropping that into the film from a remarkably early time and fucking with the narrative, makes for an interesting visual gimmick. And the cries of these creatures are worked into a sound design dense with atmosphere, blending these frightful vocalizations into the greater environment before letting them become overpowering and jarring.

I’m glad that the film decided to just become an off-kilter action comedy by the close. A twinkle exists in the film’s eye throughout, but in setting up an impotent standoff between the cop hell-bent on wiping out all cuckoo-people and the madman insistent on furthering the species in his preserve, writer-director Tilman Singer indicates that he’s just here for a good time. Hunter Schafer plays the disaffected later teen well, but also does her best Sarah Connor once she’s got a sister to protect. Dan Stevens rips up the scenery with his kooky accent and wryly creepy manner as he is wont to do. Remember, it’s best to say home until all of your cells have finished replacing themselves, because that’s a very normal way to describe the healing process. This film may play it weird in the safest way possible, but at least it’s going for weird.

This pun will continue on the next page. The best corollary I could think of in English to keep up that pun is a stolen piece won in a chess game that is the color black.)

Quando Robin Williams riuscì a far ridere di nuovo un gorilla che stava piangendo la morte del suo amico da sei mesi.

Alcuni etologi statunitensi avevano insegnato ad un gorilla di nome Koko a parlare con gli esseri umani, tramite il linguaggio dei segni.

Koko era estremamente intelligente, ma stava passando un periodo molto difficile, tanto che i biologi temevano avesse cominciato a soffrire di una grave forma di malinconia.

I ricercatori volevano aiutare Koko, trovandogli un nuovo amico, e allo stesso tempo volevano studiare come interagisse con gli esseri umani.

Avendo infatti studiato il linguaggio dei segni ed essendo in grado di comunicare con la nostra specie, rispetto agli altri gorilla, Koko era l'esemplare perfetto per stabilire se esistessero dei veri e propri confini cognitivi tra le nostre specie o meno.

Chiesero quindi a Robin Williams, noto principalmente per essere un grande attore comico, se volesse passare qualche ora in compagnia di Koko, cercando di interagire con lui naturalmente, come se si trattasse di una persona normale bisognosa d'aiuto.

Williams accettò immediatamente, anche se aveva dei dubbi sulle modalità dell'incontro. Non era infatti esperto di primati e temeva di essere troppo impacciato per relazionarsi serenamente con l'animale.

Giunto di fronte al gorilla, Williams ebbe però una vera e propria illuminazione.

Lasciando la possibilità all'animale di conoscerlo autonomamente, Williams si accorse che interagire con Koko era come se stesse interagendo con un bambino molto curioso. A poco a poco, il gorilla infatti si interessò sempre di più al visitatore, tanto che rimase affascinato dal suo paio di occhiali e volle vederlo con "i suoi strani occhi fatti di vetro".

Koko presto cominciò a parlare con Williams, usando il linguaggio dei segni, proponendogli di giocare o facendogli domande sorprendentemente intelligenti, che sconvolsero l'attore. I due, in pochi minuti, iniziarono persino a scherzare, a farsi il solletico, a giocare e a raccontare qualche loro esperienza di vita.

La cosa stupì profondamente i ricercatori, che chiesero a Koko di definire l'attore tramite una parola scelta. Il termine che il gorilla utilizzò fu "amico".

Lo stesso Williams rimase positivamente turbato da quell'incontro, soprattutto quando venne a conoscenza che era riuscito a far ridere un gorilla che rischiava di cadere in depressione per la solitudine.

A seguito di ciò, decise quindi di visitare Koko quando gli era possibile e di girare insieme a lui degli spot, a favore delle conservazione delle specie protette e contro la sperimentazione animale.

Il legame che si andò a creare fra Koko e l'attore statunitense fu così profondo che sopravvisse alla morte di Williams, avvenuta nel 2014. Quando infatti il vecchio gorilla seppe della morte dell'amico, fece segno ai suoi istruttori se poteva piangere e per alcuni giorni rimase pensieroso, con le labbra tremanti per il lutto.

Koko non si dava pace nel sapere che non lo avrebbe rivisto più.

Koko morì 4 anni dopo, nel 2018, all'età di 46 anni. Oggi è ricordato come uno dei primati più importanti della storia della ricerca scientifica.
