Nya kokböcker

Vi var på Coop häromdagen och hittade Vår kokbok Vegan. Tidigare köpte vi Vår kokbok Vego och insåg för sent att vi borde ha valt veganversionen. Så nu har vi båda. Det är okej. Det finns veganvarianter av många recept.

When Lucy had asked to learn how to bake kanelbullar, Agnes couldn't turn down the chance to teach her. Fortunately, the general recipe for the cinnamon rolls was quite simple. They really didn't require much skill. "I brought you something for our baking lesson today." The brunette stated as she made her way into the Hewitt's kitchen, knowing the way around the space as if it was her own. Slinging her backpack off her shoulder, she unzipped it and retrieved two books. The first was a book called 'Fika: The Art of the Swedish Coffee Break'. It was in English and featured the history of fika as well as an assortment of recipes for pastries that often accompanied coffee in Sweden. The second book was in Swedish; though the character on the cover was known in many languages: 'Pippi Långstrumps kokbok'. Placing both books on the counter, she then turned her attention back to Lucy. "The recipe I use is a little bit of a secret; så we have this fika book in the shoppe with recipes that I thought we could try instead. Also, this one—" She pointed to the Pippi cookbook. "—is in Swedish but is written for kids. If you want a little language lesson, we could try the recipe in here."

No waste, just taste av Karin Sundgren är en intressant och aktuell bok med tips om hur man kan minska på matsinnet i sitt hushåll. Det är en informativ bok utan pekpinnar som får en att tänka till en extra gång innan man slänger t ex de där skrumpna tomaterna i sophinken. My mum lived in sweden so she has many swedish cookbooks and I learned how to cook through them and when I went to sweden people were talking to me in swedish and the only thing I could say was: vispa ägg och socker pösigt

Swedish fact of the day;

The Swedish Selma Lagerlöf (1858-1940) was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in literature and she was the first woman to be a member of the Swedish Academy (The academy that chooses the winners for the Nobel Prize in literature). Her birthplace in Mårbacka is now a national shrine.

Princess cake (Swedish: prinsesstårta) is a traditional Swedish layer cake or torte consisting of alternating layers of airy sponge cake, pastry cream, and a thick-domed layer of whipped cream. The cake is covered by a layer of marzipan, giving it a smooth rounded top. The marzipan overlay is usually green, sprinkled with powdered sugar, and often decorated with a pink marzipan rose.

The original recipe first appeared in the 1948 Prinsessornas kokbok cookbook, which was published by Jenny Åkerström (1867-1957), teacher of the three daughters of Prince Carl, Duke of Västergötland. While the original recipe did not contain any fruit, modern versions may include layers of jam or fresh fruit, usually raspberries. Variants with other colours of marzipan are occasionally called prinstårta (prince cake) for yellow marzipan and operatårta (opera cake) for red or pink marzipan.

The cake was originally called grön tårta (green cake), but was given the name prinsesstårta or "princess cake" because the princesses were said to have been especially fond of the cake. The princesses were Princess Margaretha (1899–1977; later Princess of Denmark), Princess Märtha (1901–1954; later Crown Princess of Norway), and Princess Astrid (1905–1935; later Queen of the Belgians).

Some stuff I don’t think I’ve posted yet. I���ve had really good luck with fridge magnets lately, I think all of these are from the same store but different occasions. Numbers on the cutting mat are in centimeters for reference.

The big yellow and red things are miniature Tupperware containers, (c) Dart Ind. 1986. You can find whole sets on ebay. Huge for Barbie, but would be great for larger dolls. The hand mixer and the coffee makers seem to be from the same set (I found two of them together), but as usual the scale is all over the place. Barbie might need to enlist a big-handed action figure to operate that mixer. The yellowed coffee maker is stamped (c) 1991 ACME on the bottom, the other two just say China.

As you may or may not have guessed, Annas mat and Vår kokbok are well-known cookbooks. Or, more exactly: tiny foamcore copies of well-known cookbooks. They’re reasonably close to 1/6 scale and while not terribly realistic up-close would probably look nice in the background of a diorama. I actually have another one without the magnet somewhere, almost enough for a tiny home ec class. Normally you don’t want stains on your props, but I think it adds to the realism here.
