i find it reeeaally interesting how akito is so highly empathetic and compassionate, especially considering that he’s a “mean” character.

like this guy is nice to you if he wants you to like him, then he’s just an asshole. he never pulls punches, he never shuts his mouth. by all merits, he should be one of the most emotionally unintelligent people in the cast lineup.

but he’s not. every single event story, he knows what his teammates are thinking at all times, and he knows exactly what they need to hear. like

lyrics joined back-to-back: realizes an is babying kohane before either of them do and calls her on her shit, knowing she can handle his bluntness and resolve the issue herself.

period of nocturne: knows that toya’s father is being rough to him, and that it’s affecting toya (again, before he knows it himself). backs him up in hating his dad, but also respecting him. doesn’t push him on either front.

unsatisfied pale color: ena makes it kind of obvious she’s struggling, but akito is the one to go to her and challenge her giving up art, knowing that she’ll regret the decision. he even confronts their abusive father for him, telling him that he’s being shitty.

stray bad dog: he gets mad at arata when he insults him personally, yes, but he was ready to fight arata after he just insulted his teammates, especially kohane, who he insulted for being an amateur.

awakening beat: is the first person an calls to help her with kohane’s confidence issues. reassures kohane and lets her take things at her own pace to build her confidence.

ringing sounds at the summer festival: he’s just waaay more willing to humour his sister than he lets on.

same dreams, same colours: is acutely aware of toya’s sensitivities and insecurities surrounding his lack of experience. is very gentle with him the whole camping trip, including worrying about his fear of heights before he does himself.

the power of unity: has known arata for like 3 days total and can already clock that something’s going on with him. almost immediately offers a shoulder to lean on.

walk on and on: knows something’s up with toya without having to ask, and actively worries about him.

etc etc. akito knows what the hell is up with the people around him, and often what looks like rudeness is him confronting other people with their own emotions, and he usually won’t do that unless he knows it’ll help them (he often tells an exactly when she’s being a shithead, but won’t do the same to ena). he’s also noted on several occasions to be incredibly protective of the people he loves (see stray bad dog, and even summer festival when he goes across town cause he thinks ena is hurt).

it means to much to me to see such an unconventionally empathetic character, and how being kind is not equivalent to being nice.

both ena and an have pretty famous fathers, and it was always somewhat expected of them to be worthy of their legacy, in some way. both of them were told, "of course you're good at art - you're shinei's daughter!" and "of course you're good at singing - you're ken's daughter!" respectively.

they were always perceived via their fathers, not allowed to step outside their shadow and be seen for themselves. they couldn't be ena or an.

and, you know, for a time, they went along with it. i mean, they were good at what they were doing.

but then... all comes crashing down.

for ena, there's the obvious bullshit that's going on with shinei. completely destroying her. because she admired her father, because he was the reason she wanted to do art to begin with, and he told her to her face that she would never be good enough.

her entire world fell apart, that day.

because no matter what she says, ena wants the approval of her father more than anything else. she wants him to tell her that she's worthy of being his daughter, that all her hard work amounts to something; anything.

but then, there's the eventual revelation that she wasn't anything, actually. she wasn't special.

everyone was better than her.

before, ena was a fish in a small pond, and of course, she was among the best. but now she's been dropped in a vast ocean, and she's small, and insignificant.

devoured by all the other fish.

one of them - and admittedly, the most important of them all - being futaba. she joined after ena, but she proved herself in much less time than her. and, even succeeded where ena failed - she never gave up, even when she was harshly criticised. never regressing artistically. never running away from art.

and there's something else, somewhere deep down - a fear. a fear that nightcord will abandon her when they realise she can't keep up with them. that she's not as good as they thought she was.

what will happen of her, then? she'll be all alone. unloved.

an goes through something similar.

she meets kohane, and she decides that this person is going to be her partner. that they're going to surpass THE rad weekend together, that no one could be better for this task but her.

but when she starts that relationship, it's with the assumption that she'll always be the teacher and that kohane will always be the student.

not in a mean, or pretentious way, no, not at all. simply, an was always told there was no way she couldn't surpass rad weekend, since she was ken's daughter. in her small pond, she was also among the very best.

but then, an realises something, too.

kohane is much better at everything than she is.

very similarly to ena's situation with futaba, kohane made much more progress in barely a year than an has in years. taiga - one of the old RADers, and somewhat of an uncle for an - recognised her potential, and asked to train her. not an, but kohane.

and of course, an is happy to know that! because that's her partner and friend, and an is happy to see her grow more confident and get better every day. because she cares. because she loves her.

but there's something in her chest - something that hurts and aches. she has to face the fact that she's not as good as she thought she was, that she isn't worthy of her father's legacy. that she isn't worthy of being kohane's partner, that she might be holding her back.

that she might be abandoned. left behind to rot.

what will happen of her, then? she'll be all alone. unloved.

to me - ena and an are two kids suffering under the weight of a legacy that's too heavy for them to carry, but that they can't let go of. they're also struggling with seeing their peers succeed where they repeatedly fail. they're all about being terrified of being abandoned because they're not good enough.

they're both confronted by this fact.

and it terrorises them.

VBS main story is so funny because when you think about it Akito has pretty much sealed his fate (Touya leaving him) the moment he decided to dislike Kohane (because he's literally star struck with Touya).

Objectively Akito asking Touya to team up with him literally bears no difference to how An and Kohane teamed up, both of them have literally picked their partners up by the scruff like feral kittens and said "Hey I like you. Want to be extremely gay and not normal about this One Thing?". It's just in Akito's (very self-deprecating) eyes Touya is different because he's so good obviously Kohane cannot compare to him, and Touya is a special case because he's actually better than Akito himself so obviously this doesn't count; meanwhile An's choice to team up with Kohane was illogical and stupid in his eyes even before has heard Kohane sing because he would say the same thing to anyone else in that situation but his own partner (and also, I think, Akito really wanted An for his own team. Let's not forget the fact that they literally meet Kohane the day Akito has decided to invite An to join Bad Dogs. I feel like this is important context). Touya has always been exceptional for Akito to a degree Akito never really considered how he might feel about the whole being a newcomer thing.

But regardless of what Akito thought, Touya was one, so of course he related to Kohane. He's doubtful and tries to reign Akito in multiple times, but most of what we see of him up to this point is him being hesitant and in thought. Because Akito never thought of Touya as someone half-hearted he didn't consider that by saying all of those things about Kohane, to Touya, he was hurting Touya.

Gosh those two are delightfully stupid.

WHAT IS VERTICAL SEKAI?

Vertical SEKAI is a fan made alternate universe of Project SEKAI made by @shiraoyagi .

It is a unitswap based on the number order of each character in the files. These numbers are organized vertically to create new units rather than how they are done horizontally in the original game. To demonstrate (because I couldn't find a more concise way to word this), I created a chart.

The above image shows how the numbers are organized by unit in canon. For reference, 1 is Ichika, 20 is Mizuki, and 21 is Miku.

The below image shows how the numbers are organized by unit in the Vertical SEKAI AU.

DISCLAIMER: I did not shuffle the VS numbers because they serve the same function in this AU as they do in the canon game. Ideally, I'd sort them vertically to determine their default unit placements, but unfortunately, by doing this I would create a massive plot hole in AURORA's lore, so I decided against it.

I don't expect anyone to know the character numbers off the top of their head, so I'll also list the units properly below (with altered unit placements to reflect the story).

WHAT IS THE PURPOSE OF THIS ACCOUNT?

This account is basically how information about the Vertical SEKAI AU will be distributed. It is basically an ask blog.

You can either ask questions to me on this blog directly, or you can ask questions to the characters in the AU, and in that case, I will try to respond as in character as possible.

In Vertical SEKAI AU canon, these questions are given to the characters (when addressed to them) in the form of fragments of feelings that float around their SEKAIs (similarly to how after lives work in canon). This means that in character questions can only be asked to characters who have access to a SEKAI, so... sorry, NPC enjoyers (although I'll still answer questions about them myself)!

I have a weird and maybe a little bit ooc fanfic idea where it's basically a collection of times that at the beginning of the new school year whenever Rui is too focused on his work to cause trouble and Tsukasa can catch a damn break for once An begins to get on Tsukasa's nerves by breaking the school rules in Very Minor and Insignificant ways. Like wearing her uniform slightly incorrectly. Leaving her piercings in. Speed walking in the hallways. Etc. And whenever Tsukasa tries to approach her about it she pulls this monologue on him (paraphrased)

She does this for like a week or so out of sheer pettiness & the fun of it but stops very soon because 1) She feels bad for making him upset by reminding him he was part of Rui's shenanigans during the first year. He's remorseful enough about it 2) Touya glares at her and it makes her die inside a little bit 3) She feels like she still owes Rui some for the tutoring and that extends to Tsukasa in some way 4) An can hold a mean grudge but she's not a vengeful person by nature so it kinda just stops being fun or satisfying and she goes "wait this is pathetic actually. Why am I doing this". & Then she stops doing this. And Tsukasa is still mildly haunted by the happenings

HELP MEEE THATS SO FUNNY…. Tsukasa is so confused & stressed by this and anytime a reminds him of his past transgressions he does his “augh i have failed as a senior by acting so irresponsibly in the past” thing. An looking at tsukasa doing something akin to his dollfes untrained card over this & shes like ohh he’s kinda pathetic. now i feel bad. Tsukasa very casually asks Toya if something’s going on with An & then the next time she’s in the sekai she walks into the cafe to see Toya sitting at a table with a coffee & he’s like “ah shiraishi… please have a seat 😐☕️” (an remembering all the times Toya has gotten peeved about Akito being a little rude to tsukasa & promptly entering soggy wet cat mode & apologizing) (Toya was literally just going to ask if she was ok).

My one fic idea with An boils down to her asking nene to eat lunch together & nene’s like “tsukasa isn’t here so I’m eating with rui today sorry…” and an (who still feels some semblance of responsibility despite her best efforts & is like oh god tsk isn’t here to corral him he’s gotta be up to something) is like “oh that’s fine I can join you guys :).” & she’s treated to a first hand seat of rui acting like tsukasa has gone off to war. He has no desire to do anything mischievous it’s not fun when tsukasa isn’t there to get mad. She’s watching nene coerce Rui into eating lunch & is internally like wow this is really sad (oblivious to the fact that she does this when kohane is sick and can’t come to practice)… tfw you wanna hang out with that pathetic green thing but she has to take care of her deeply over dramatic purple clown friend.

kohane proceeds to teach toya the entirety of six. theres a specific line that gets stuck in his head every time and kohane spits out her drink when toya mumbles "all you wanna do, all you wanna do baby - touch me, love me, dont say maybe" while running his hand through akitos hair (who is oblivious)

minori and kohane scamper away to a hidden corner of miya at lunch break and shiho walks in on them singing a combanation of cringy idol songs and overhyped theater songs.

also she rearearaeearreally likes beetlejuice. vbs have a warmup where they take turns singing the song thats stuck in their head at that moment. kohane glances around. an gives her the thumbs up. "MOM. DEAD MOOOOOMOMOMOM I NEED A LITTLE HELP HERE. are you really in the ground? cause i feeeeeeeel you all areound me are you hear dead moooom dead mom. in skipping the middle. CAUSE DADDY'S IN DENIAL, DADDY DOESN'T WANNA FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL HE WANTS ME TO SMILE AND CLAP LIKE A PERFORMING SEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAL IGNORED IT FOR A WHILE BUT DADDYS LOST HIS MIND FOR REAL FOR REAL FOR REEEEAAAAAAAL YOU WONT BELEIVE THE MESS THAT WEVE BECOME DUN DUN DUN DUN" toya sitting there sweating and hoping that neither an nor akito can understand english that well because it would most definately bring up some unwanted memories.

and because its canon. she also LOVES wanadashow. going to school with OOTORI FUCKING EMU makes her a mess every time. her current vocal stims are "haha! you are king~" and "RULERRULERRULER ITS SHOW TIME HIGHERHIGHERHIGHER ITS SHOW TIME CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY" and that just repeats until someone ducktapes her mouth

oh and! if someone asks her what time it is she'll always say "it's showtime." arata does this too and everyone thinks she picked it up from him. nope. its both a wanadashow and hamilton reference. (he'll never admit it but arata is also a hamilton fan. he saw it while he was in the states and something about it entranced him. probably how well the rap is written. it heavily inspires a lot of his music and kohane makes the homophobic dog face every time. thats why she was so surprised in walk on and on with soumas unfinished track!!!)

This Pharmacy only gives out Vitamin Kohane! If you are in need of any other vitamins, I would suggest checking out @daily-vitamin-ena, and maybe others as well!

I am called Kanon, and I type every name or reference to an entity in their theme colour. I am the public face of this pharmacy, and unless specified, all vitamins and messages will be from me.

Hey-I'm Seren, and I'm the most senior employee here (after Kanon of course!). Generally, I know what I'm doing, and since Kanon got herself stranded on a volcano last time he tried to do a rescue mission, I'm doing them now out of fear of her being in danger! I use they/them and type in all blue text!

HII! I'm Ada! >u< While I am a newer employee, I act with all the joy of those my senior :D. Or at least, try to! I like talking to other pharms as well, so don't be surprised if an employee from Pharmahane comes up to your inbox and it's not Kannie! ^u^ I use she/it pronouns and type in all orange!

Whip the Wimp Girl! Event Story Summary

TL;DR: An's assignment from Ken was to get the rest of the town serious about their next event. Though he was nervous about her now strained relationship with them due to the truth about Nagi, An has already managed to resolve those feelings.

However, a different feeling has been holding her back now- Kohane. Whenever An thinks of Kohane's singing, she feels anxious. She thought she'd gotten over that, though, so she goes to SEKAI to ask Akito and Miku for help. Luka and Toya end up overhearing the conversation and join in, too. Luka suggests actually telling Kohane about her feelings, but An is scared of letting her down.

Time goes on, and An still hasn't done anything to confront her feelings. Toya asks to meet her one evening and explains his former situation with Akito. He had been too scared to tell Akito about his lack of resolve towards surpassing RAD WEEKEND before because he didn't want Akito to think less of him. He feels An might feel the same about Kohane. An realizes the reason she's been hesitating is because she doesn't want Kohane to see this ugly side of her. Later, An thinks about what Nagi would have done in this situation. She decides that Nagi would have battled even harder- which gives her an idea.

An asks Kohane to battle her, and explains how Kohane's rapid growth scares her. She's scared of one day not being someone she looks up to, but knows she has to face these feelings. Kohane's happy she's finally someone An sees as a worthy opponent and agrees to the battle.

Meanwhile, Toya, Akito, and Kotaro enjoy the day off when they hear commotion on the street. The group go and investigate, also inviting EVER to watch. They find a massive crowd watching An and Kohane, who continually trade ever-increasing blows. The two have massive respect for one another, but refuse to lose. On their last song, Kohane surprises everyone with her skill, but An, believing in both herself and the town that grew up with her, gave it everything she had and ultimately won the battle. Moved by An's determination to face her fears, EVER rejoins the group.

Chapter 1: Kohane arrives at a street corner An had asked her to come to, though she isn't sure why. In order to complete her assignment, An ask's for Kohane's help- in the form of a battle.

Through a flashback, An's assignment was revealed to be getting the rest of the town serious about the event. RAD WEEKEND wouldn't have been possible without the feelings of everyone in the town; in order to surpass it, they need to rile everyone's belief back up. Ken warns that the town is still caught up on chasing Nagi's shadow and their guilt over lying to An of her death.

The rest of Vivid BAD SQUAD are nervous about this talk going to An since she had taken the news of Nagi's fate hardest, but understand this is something only she can do. An reveals that the crawl green owner, along with the rest of the town, had already apologized to her for the lies. An accepts her assignment with a smile.

Chapter 2: That night, back in her room, An begins planning her approach. She's confident her best song is the one that will convince everyone they will go beyond Nagi's dream. She goes over to Ken to ask for some singing advice. Though Ken was worried about the strained relationship between her and the rest of the town would prove difficult to overcome, watching her practice, he knows it will be alright. While An sings, though, when trying to channel the heat she felt from Nagi, she's reminded of Kohane. Ken stops the performance and asks what's wrong.

Chapter 3: An confides in Ken of her troubled feelings about Kohane. She'd thought she had resolved those feelings before, but the anxiety still lingers within her. Though it had motivated her to grow before, it has now turned into an obstacle.

An meets Akito and Miku in the SEKAI to ask for their help. It's hard, since she knows Kohane won't leave her, but she still feels this way. Luka and Toya ended up overhearing the conversation and stepped in to cut off her self-loathing. Luka points out how cool it is that An cares this much about Kohane. Toya apologized for eavesdropping on accident. An reassures them both and asks for their help, too.

Chapter 4: An recounts her story to the others. Toya is sympathetic, but doesn't understand her anxieties. He believes An is an incredible singer in her own right, standing toe-to-toe with Kohane. Akito agrees. Miku has Toya and Akito explain how they see Kohane as reliable and motivational. An agrees, and explains how she'd always dreamed of having a partner, and how Kohane made that a reality. However, that weight is the source of her anxiety. Luka suggests actually telling Kohane that. An doesn't want to, though, for fear of upsetting her (and a deep feeling of unease over the thought).

Chapter 5: Some time later, Vivid BAD SQUAD reflect on a recent event. Kohane and Toya both notice hesitation in An's demeanor. Even later after that, An and Kohane walk home together after another event. After some light chat, Kohane begins talking about surpassing RAD WEEKEND before she has to split paths. An still can't rid herself of that feeling. She knows she should, but she still can't talk to Kohane about it.

After receiving a message fro him, An meets Toya at a street crossing to talk. Toya shares how An's hesitance to speak to Kohane reminded him of the past, when he tried hiding his true feelings from Akito about his perceived lack of resolve in surpassing RAD WEEKEND. He was scared of letting Akito down, and assumes An feels the same. An knows Kohane looks up to her, but she feels that deep down, she's not someone worthy of that pride. An knows Kohane will accept all the parts of herself, but still is scared to let Kohane see her worst. Toya reassures her that things will be alright in the end- it's how he managed to move forward with Akito. An thanks Toya for the help.

Chapter 6: Later, An wonders how Nagi would have dealt with something like this. She thinks she would have strengthened her resolved and fought back. An gets an idea.

Back in the present, An explains how she was scared by Kohane's rapid growth, that she would one day no longer make her heart race, and that telling her all this would make her disappointment. She had tried to run around the issue, but ultimately decided that if Nagi wouldn't have hid her feelings from her teammates, neither should she. She wants to fight to surpass Kohane. Kohane apologizes, surprising An. However, it's just because she's happy that An finally sees her as a worthy opponent. Kohane agrees to the battle.

A little later, Akito, Toya and Kotaro hang out at Weekend Garage, enjoying the day off. Meanwhile, chatter picks up on Vivid Street about an intense battle. Akito sees EVER among the crowd and chases after them. They had been helping out around the street, but are trapped by the crowd watching An and Kohane's battle. Though Akito and Kotaro are surprised, Toya's proud of An. They all run to watch. Akito asks EVER to come, too.

Chapter 7: The group arrives to find almost the whole town watching the intense battle. It's Kohane's turn first, and An can't help but be reminded of Nagi when she sings. An sings back, and Kohane admires the determination in her song. She wants to sing like An can. Still, she doesn't want to lose, even to her partner, and picks up the pace. An thinks this is the best Kohane has ever sounded, and thanks her for bringing the seriousness she needed. However, if she loses now, she'll keep singing by Kohane's side forever, with that anxiety forever. An ramps it up even more.

Toya asks Tatsuya if he's ever felt fear because of someone's song before, reminding him of the battle with Taiga. Akito explains that this is how An has always felt about Kohane.

An had only noticed that the whole town had come to watch once the song ended. She's reminded of the little her that has always been loved by the street. The partners decide to end the battle after one more song. Kohane starts off with even more than she had before, startling everyone. An knows Kohane is the best partner she could have ever asked for. She dragged everything out of her: the good, the bad, and the ugly. An wants to return the favor now with her own song. An begins singing. The whole town begins cheering her on. She drives herself to put in even more, because she's Shiraishi An- the person who grew up on this street, who was trained by Nagi, who has the whole town behind her, and who has the resolve to surpass it all.

The crowd congratulates the two on the battle, declaring An the winner. Though Kohane's frustrated she lost, that battle made her heart pound more than it ever has before. She asks to battle again sometime in the future. An's happy to have such an incredible partner.

Chapter 8: Even after the battle ended, the whole crowd was fired up. Tatsuya talks about how it felt impossible to move past the battle with Taiga, but always questioned if it was right to just give up. They had all started because they wanted to overcome a dream others said was foolish. EVER was convinced that they would never win. However, after watching An conquer her own fear, they decide to stop running away and rejoin the group.

An announces to the crowd that they will surpass Nagi's dream, and asks them all to follow her there. No matter what the feeling is, they will overcome it, and they will surpass RAD WEEKEND. The owner of crawl green promises they all will see it through to the end, no matter what path An follows.

An thanks Kohane for the battle, to which Kohane returns. They both feel stronger for it. Kohane's sure she'll be able to complete her assignment now. Toya runs up to congratulate An on the win, and Akito reveals EVER is back on board.

I find it very interesting that Tsukasa has all the potential to be the "main character" of wansho but he's just... never framed as such. I'd argue that title goes to Emu with how she's the one to start wansho and ends the arc with her dreams being reached.

Tsukasa is the leader of wansho and—compared to the other leaders, aside from Kanade—takes on that role more literally than the others. This is not to say that Minori, Ichika, and Kohane doesn't deserve that title because I won't deny that they're the catalyst of each group's creation, but compared to the three Tsukasa is in charge of the group itself and has been acknowledged to be the leader of wansho multiple times by other characters.

Tsukasa's biggest title or dream is being a star; the centre of attention and basically what would be associated to being a 'main character'. He's the sole creator of wansho's SEKAI and song to access it before deciding to share it with wansho at the end of the main story. He's loud and all encompassing, Kaito has specifically mentioned that people simply gravitate towards him. This all leads to the potential of wansho's storyline to surround him and his dreams.

And yet, and yet, and yet.

Tsukasa has always been framed as having a supporting role. The only reason he stayed at Wonder Stage is because of Emu's dream of saving Pheniland, and to reach that dream he needs to bring wansho together and lead them, advancing his skills was just another way to support that dream.

His first focus event wasn't even about himself but about how he helped wansho and the staff of Phoeniland orcestrate Project Wonder, how important his leadership is to rally people for a cause. In the the Scramble Fan Fes event Tsukasa's card isn't about him performing or anything of the sorts, but he's encouraging Minori and guiding her through her stage fright before her performance. His entire dream of becoming a star is spurred on by his desire to bring smiles to Saki and supoort her through her hardships, later Toya too, and then that desire spreads even more to everyone.

Tenma Tsukasa is defined by the people around him, by how much he's able to bring joy to his family and his friends and in turn their happiness becomes his happiness.

And he's so natural at in the way that Emu recognises it the first time she sees him and asks him to join Wonder Stage, in the way that Rui is allowed to change because of the chance Tsukasa gave him, in the way that Nene feels inspired by his exponential growth that she pushes herself forward too. Tsukasa is so important to Toya and Saki for the same reason, Rui asked him to record lines to cheer up Mizuki for the same reason, Shizuku recognises how kind of a person he is for the same reason.

TLDR; Tsukasa loves and cares for his friends and family and his character is defined by his ability to make them happy and support them despite how main character worthy he is

The reason I became a superhero was cause I admired my dad and his friends, I even got shapeshifting cause I tried to be like him.

Me and my group, Vivid Bad Squad are heroes and we also sing. We're trying to surpass an event where my dad and his group, Radder defeated such a powerful villain.

he never read the old testament bc its a slog

hes convinced half the sermons are directed directly at him ("dont work to hard jesus wants you to be happy" "who do you think you are")

he Does Not Care that swearing is a sin (barely) and has on multiple occasions fought people over gay rights (he is a jesdas shipper. sorry.)

he was forced to go as a little kid but when ena started getting bad (right before the main story) he started praying again and gradually began to believe

an is convinced he is shitting her when he mentioned it in passing

kohane very sheepishly asks him about it once and he infodumps to her about jesdas

he eventually starts wearing a crucifix as one earring and ena raises a singular eyebrow but doesnt question it (she did get better after all)

he refuses to join the chapel choir despite being good at singing and all the bullshit. however he uses hymns as warmups much to an's amusement
